技术领域

背景技术
这种类型的显示设备需要用于控制其每个发光元件的发光度的驱动电路。在无源驱动(passive matrix)技术中,一个驱动电路与多个发光元件相关联,并提供根据时分(time division)方案(即在给定的瞬间)为该多个发光元件提供操作电流脉冲,与给定驱动电路关联的多个发光元件中只有一个发光元件接收操作电流并发出光,而其它的发光元件不接收电流并保持黑暗。无源驱动技术包含简单、便宜的电路,但是为了达到显示设备合理的总发光度,提供给单独的发光元件的脉冲的强度(intensity)必须较高,造成诸如发光元件的过早老化(premature aging)和显示设备的低可靠性的问题。
在有源驱动(active matrix)技术中,每个发光元件都具有与其关联的电流调制器,该电流调制器是可编程的,用于为其发光元件提供持续的操作电流,当要显示新的图像时更新该操作电流的强度。

发明内容

为了解释图1的电路的操作,我们假定显示设备刚刚开始操作,最初所有的电流调制器2-1、2-2、...、2-n 10和电流发生器11处于阻断状态,使得所有的OLED为黑。此外,方便起见,将假定在输入15接收的第一数字发光度值为对应于OLED1-1的值D1。参照图2和图3,其图示电流发生器11的输出电流IDATA和电流调制器10的输出电流I10的波形。
控制块对通过闭合开关4-1输入的并使晶体管13导通的发光度值D1起反应,使得在时间t1c(比较图2)正电流IDATA开始从电流发生器11流到电路节点3。因此电路节点3的电势变为正。这导致运算放大器6输出正电压,其对存储电容器5-1充电,并导致电流调制器2-1变为导通,使恒向电流经过电阻器14和电路节点3。控制块12持续地适应施加到晶体管13的控制电极的电压,直到在输入16检测的压降与输入发光度值D1有预定的关系,指示具有用于生成期望的发光度D1的必需的强度的电流IDATA=ID1=c*D1从电流发生器11流过电流调制器2-1和OLED1-1。
当该情况发生,可能电路节点3首先具有正电势。该正电势导致运算放大器6输出继续对存储电容器2-1充电的电流,因此逐步增大在电流调制器2-1的控制电极处的电势,并增加其传导性。控制块12持续地调节施加到晶体管13的控制电压,使得经过电路节点3的电流恒定保持在ID1。很快,达到其中电路节点3具有地电势的稳定状态。在该状态中,控制块12使开关4-1重新开路。
在下一步骤中,在时间t1d,控制块12阻断晶体管13,使得电流发生器11变为非导通(IDATA=0),并使开关8闭合。由于电流调制器2-1保持导通,电路节点3的电势下降,其导致运算放大器7向存储电容器9和电流调制器10的控制电极输出正电流。再次,电路节点3一返回地电势就达到稳定状态。当该情况发生,经过OLED1-1的电流正好等于ID1,但该电流不再由电流发生器11提供,而是由电流调制器10提供。
在后面的步骤中,从时间t2a到t2c,控制块12执行重置过程,为了更好地理解将在后面解释该过程。
到时间t2c为止,控制块12收到了指定OLED1-2的期望的发光度D2的第二数字数据。在t2c,控制块12闭合开关4-2,并开始控制晶体管12,使得具有对应于所述期望的发光度D2的流过电流发生器11的电流IDATA=ID2。再次,电路节点3的电势稍微地变正,该时间导致放大器6对电容器5-2充电,并使电流调制器2-2导通。到达其中电路节点3处于地电势的稳定状态,来自电流发生器11的电流IDATA=ID2被OLED2-2吸收,然而来自电流调制器10的电流I10流过OLED1-1。接着控制块12使开关4-2开路,在时间t2d,控制块12阻断晶体管13并再次使开关8闭合。在电路节点3上的电势降低导致放大器7继续对电容器9充电,直到经过电流调制器10的电流I10变为等于ID1+ID2
对该列的所有剩余OLED重复该过程,在每次重复结束时,对于每个OLED来自电流调制器10的电流增加期望的强度IDi(i=3,...,n),最终达到I=ID1+ID2+...+IDn。在这个阶段,整个图像在显示设备上可见。
由控制块12接收的下一数字数据为指定在随后画面中的OLED1-1的期望的发光度D1’的数据。为了使OLED1-1的发光度适应该新值,在时间t1a’(见图3),控制块12通过使开关4-1闭合开始重置过程,由此使存储电容器5-1放电,电流调制器2-1变为非导通。接着,使开关4-1重新开路。在电路节点3上的电势稍微地变正,通过在时间t1b’使开关8闭合,导致电流调制器10适应该新情况:电流调制器10的电流减小到I-ID1。该重置OLED1-1的过程使得控制块12以与参照图2的前面所述的完全相同的方式设置该OLED的新的发光度D1’:在时间t1c’,控制块12导致电流发生器11输出IDATA=ID1’,并使开关4-1闭合,使得当电路节点3处于地电势时,电流调制器2-2将从电路节点3正好吸收电流ID1’。使得开关4-2重新开路,在时间t1d’,控制块12阻断晶体管13,并使开关8闭合,使得由电流调制器10提供的电流I10增大到I-ID1+ID1。对于所有其它的OLED 1-2,...,1-n以相似的方式继续该过程。
由于控制块12被用于对OLED的发光度一个接一个地编程,因此电流发生器11的分辨率不需要高于由控制块12接收的单个发光度数据的分辨率,而与一列中的OLED的数目无关。
参照EP 1 621 20 A1的教学,对于技术人员,容易地显而易见的是:图1的电路的操作过程可被如下地修改:首先,控制块连续地对少量OLED(例如OLED 1-1、1-2)的发光度进行编程,如引用的文献所述。如果假定ID1、ID2为对应于OLED 1-1、1-2的期望的发光度D1、D2的电流强度,在该编程结束时由电流发生器11输出的电流IDATA等于ID1+ID2。接着,控制块12使电流发生器11非导通,如参照图2或图3上面所述,并使开关8闭合,使得之前由电流发生器11提供的电流ID1+ID2被“复制”到电流调制器10。容易地显而易见的是:建立完整的图像所需的复制步骤的数目越小,则在两个复制步骤之间连续编程的OLED的数目越大。另一方面,电流发生器11所需的分辨率与连续编程的OLED的数目成比例地增加。
根据另一实施例,可通过不先于对电流调制器2编程而对其重置,提高图像建立速度。容易理解的是:当刚刚激活显示并且形成第一图像时,不需要重置的步骤。当形成第二图像时,通过使电流发生器11输出电流IDATA=ID1’-ID1,对例如OLED 1-1的发光度进行编程,其中ID1’为对应于在第二图像中的OLED 1-1的期望的发光度D1’的电流强度。由于在该实施例中IDATA可为负,电流发生器11必须适应以生成负电流,例如通过在晶体管13和V-之间串联的并被控制块12控制的未示出的第二晶体管的方式。
在该实施例中,IDATA的任何不精确都可导致OLED的发光度漂移。为了限制这样的漂移,可想到当对每个OLED进行重新编程而不重置预定的次数时,对每个OLED施加重置。

Claims (7)

1.一种视频显示设备,包含:
以包括行和列的矩阵排列的多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n);
多个第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n),每个第一电流调制器与所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的一个发光元件相关联,用于从与每个所述列关联的电路节点(3),为关联的发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)吸收可编程的强度的馈电电流(ID1、ID2、...、IDn);
电流发生器(11),其由代表用于为所述电路节点(3)提供第一电流(IDATA)的所述多个发光元件的期望的发光度(D1、D2、...、Dn)的视频数据控制,所述第一电流的强度代表所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的至少一个发光元件的期望的发光度(D1、D2、...、Dn);
电路节点(3),当由所述电流发生器(11)提供的强度被与所述至少一个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)关联的第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n)从电路节点(3)吸收时,电路节点(3)具有特定的电压电平;
其特征在于:
第二电流调制器(10),用于将第二电流(I10)提供给所述电路节点(3);
比较器(7),其具有与所述电路节点(3)和恒定保持在所述特定的电压电平上的参考端子连接的输入、与所述第二电流调制器(10)的控制输入连接的输出,由此控制来自所述第二电流调制器(10)的第二电流(I10),以在电路节点(3)处产生所述特定的电压电平。
2.如权利要求1所述的显示设备,其中所述比较器(7)具有通过开关(8)与第二电流调制器(10)的控制输入连接的输出,存储电容器(9)与所述控制输入连接,用于当所述开关(8)开路时将所述控制输入保持在恒定电压。
3.如权利要求1或2所述的显示设备,其中比较器(7)是具有与所述电路节点(3)连接的反相输入和与所述参考端子连接的正相输入的运算放大器。
4.如上面权利要求中的一项所述的显示设备,还包含具有与所述电路节点(3)和所述参考端子连接的输入的第二比较器(6)、以及用于将所述第二比较器(6)的输出和所述多个第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n)中的一个第一电流调制器的控制输入选择性连接的多个开关(4-1、4-2、...、4-n)。
5.一种用于操作显示设备的方法,所述显示设备包括:以包括行和列的矩阵排列的多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n);多个第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n),每个第一电流调制器与所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的一个发光元件相关联,用于从与每个所述列关联的电路节点(3),为关联的发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)吸收可编程的强度的馈电电流(ID1、ID2、...、IDn);电流发生器(11),其由代表所述发光元件的期望的发光度(D1、D2、...、Dn)的视频数据控制;第二电流调制器(10),用于将第二电流(I10)提供给所述电路节点(3);
所述方法包含以下步骤:
a)将代表所述多个发光元件的至少第一个发光元件的期望的发光度(D1、D2、...、Dn)的第一电流(IDATA;ID1、ID2、...、IDn)从所述电流发生器(11)提供给所述电路节点(3);
b)对与所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的所述至少一个发光元件关联的第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n)进行编程,以从所述电路节点(3)吸收所述第一电流(ID1、ID2、...、IDn),由此所述电路节点获得特定的电压电平;
c)停止从所述电压源提供所述第一电流(IDATA;ID1、ID2、...、IDn);
d)控制所述第二电流(I10)的强度,以在所述电路节点处重建所述特定的电压电平。
6.如权利要求5所述的方法,其中,为所述发光元件的至少第二个发光元件重复步骤a)到步骤d),并且在重复步骤a)和步骤b)的同时,第二电流(I10)的强度被保持为在先前步骤d)中设置的值。
7.如权利要求5或6所述的方法,其中,为所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的所述至少第一个发光元件重复步骤a)到步骤d),并且在这之前,与所述多个发光元件(1-1、1-2、...、1-n)中的所述至少一个发光元件关联的第一电流调制器(2-1、2-2、...、2-n)被编程为不从所述电路节点(3)吸收电流。
