On a first metal surface of a substrate formed from a first material, a first abrasion operation is carried out to obtain a first pattern. A layer of tinted material is deposited on the first metal surface to cover it as well as the first pattern. A second abrasion operation is then carried out on the layer of tinted material so as to remove the layer of tinted material in certain zones according to a second pattern, in order to reveal therein at least part of the first metallic surface and of the first pattern.
Description
The present invention relates to a dial for a timepiece and a method of manufacturing such a dial.
The effects on the dials of timepieces are frequently sought in the watch industry.
So far, we have obtained dials with an appearance of "aged effect wood" for timepieces, by adding thin wooden plates (marquetry) treated so as to obtain the desired effect. However, such dials had at least one of the following disadvantages: having a limited service life over time, being sensitive to variations in temperature, as well as to humidity, difficulties in design and durability due to the behavior of the metal-wood combination and the disadvantage of adding an additional layer to the dial and thus increasing the thickness of the case of the timepiece.
The purpose of the present invention is to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art by proposing to produce a timepiece dial having an appearance of "aged wood effect" on a new piece, in particular a cracked aged wood effect, simpler to be produced, durable over time and potentially compatible with the current trend of minimizing the thickness of timepiece cases, “extra-flat” type. The appended figure schematically illustrates the appearance obtained of a portion of a dial according to the invention.
The present invention relates to the production of a dial intended to equip a timepiece, in particular a wristwatch, a pocket watch or a pendulum.
The dial according to the invention is made in a substrate formed of a first material and having a first metal surface. The first material is preferably chosen from brass, gold and a copper alloy. The first metallic surface can be formed directly in the first material of the substrate (i.e. the substrate itself is metallic) or can be obtained by applying a layer of a second metallic material on the substrate, by any appropriate means (galvanic layer, silver plating, etc.). When the first metallic surface is formed directly in the first material of the substrate, the first material is generally gold. The second metallic material can be chosen from nickel, gold, silver and a galvanic layer of the gold-nickel type. These can be the different grades of gold 1N, 2N, 3N, 4N, 5N and 6N, preferably 2N. It can also be different types of silver, preferably a matt silver. In the example illustrated, the dial is formed from a brass substrate on which silvering is carried out in order to deposit there a layer of silver forming the first metallic surface. Such a layer of silver is relatively soft and makes it possible to facilitate the subsequent abrasion work, in particular via an abrasive tool for manual use. This silver layer has a thickness ranging from 1 μm to 15 μm, preferably from 1 to 3 μm. It can be affixed to the substrate before the silver layer, a nickel layer, as well as a very thin layer of 2N gold (flash gold) in order to improve the adhesion to the substrate.
To obtain the dial according to the invention, a first abrasion operation is carried out on the first metal surface. This first abrasion operation can be carried out by any suitable means (laser, abrasive tools for manual use, etc.). Preferably, this first abrasion operation is carried out so as to obtain a first essentially uniform pattern on the first metal surface, said first pattern being formed of essentially parallel striations or stripes and arranged randomly horizontally or vertically on the first metal surface of the substrate. .
[0008] Preferably, the first abrasion operation is carried out on the silver layer of the first metal surface. This first abrasion operation is preferably carried out manually using an appropriate tool. In this case, it is preferably carried out in a single pass of the abrasive tool. This advantageously makes it possible to obtain an essentially uniform pattern over the entire first metallic surface, this without damaging the dial or causing the first material to resurface when a layer of a second metallic material is applied to the first material. In the example illustrated, the first pattern is formed of vertical streaks relative to the direction of reading of the dial and obtained manually using an appropriate tool.
As abrasive tools for manual use, one can use a brush or a sponge of the scouring type generally known to clockworkers.
A layer of tinted material is then applied to the first metal surface of the dial to cover it. This layer can be applied by any suitable means (physical or chemical deposition). This layer of tinted material may for example be a metallic coating, a paint, a lacquer or a primer. It is preferably a deposit of a galvanic layer. Preferably, the color of the galvanic layer is chosen from nickel-black, gray-black, blue or brown. This layer has a thickness ranging from 1 to 5 μm, preferably from 1 to 3 μm.
Preferably, the shade chosen for the tinted material layer offers a high contrast with the shade of the first metal surface. For example, the color of the first layer can be chosen from light colors such as white, light gray and light colors such as yellow, beige, when the color of the layer of tinted material is chosen from colors dark such as blacks, dark grays, browns, browns and blues. And conversely, the shade of the first layer can be chosen from dark shades such as blacks, dark grays, browns, browns and blues, when the shade of the tinted material layer is chosen from light shades such than whites, light grays and light colors such as yellow, beige.
Preferably, the shade of the first metallic surface is chosen from light shades and the shade of the layer of tinted material is chosen from dark shades.
In the example illustrated, the color of the first metal surface is silver and the tinted material applied to the first metal surface is black in color.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metal surface is a matt silver layer and the layer of tinted material is a gray-black galvanic color (coloring in gold-nickel).
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metallic surface is a matt silver layer and the layer of tinted material is a nickel-black galvanic color.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metallic surface is a layer of 2N gold and the layer of tinted material is a gray-black galvanic color (coloring of gold-nickel).
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metallic surface is a layer of 2N gold and the layer of tinted material is a nickel-black galvanic color.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the first metal surface is a layer of 2N gold and the layer of tinted material is a blue galvanic color.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metal surface is a layer of nickel and the layer of tinted material is a brown galvanic color.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the first metal surface is a layer of 2N gold and the layer of tinted material is a silver layer yellowed by sulfurization.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the first metal surface is a gold-nickel galvanic layer and the layer of tinted material is a PVD layer of appropriate color.
Then applying a new abrasion operation on the layer of tinted material so as to remove in place the layer of tinted material in a second pattern and bring out at least a portion of the first metal surface and the first pattern. This second abrasion operation can be carried out by any suitable means (laser, abrasive tools for manual use, etc.). It also makes it possible to obtain a second essentially uniform pattern on the layer of tinted material. Preferably, the technique used for this second abrasion operation is the same as that used for the first abrasion operation so that the second pattern is similar to the first pattern. Preferably also, this second uniform pattern is formed of essentially parallel streaks or stripes and arranged randomly horizontally or vertically with respect to the dial. Preferably, the technique used for this second abrasion operation is the same as that used for the first abrasion operation, carried out in a substantially offset manner with respect to the first abrasion step. By substantially offset, it will be understood that the second abrasion step is carried out with an offset of the second pattern of the order of a few tenths of a millimeter relative to the first pattern. The production of the second pattern on the first pattern advantageously makes it possible to obtain a structured and non-homogeneous effect on the dial, which a wood essence could have in nature.
The high contrast between the tint of the first metallic surface and the tint of the tinted material layer, combined with the second abrasion operation advantageously makes it possible to obtain a visual effect which will give an aged effect to the dial, imitating the appearance of a painted wood component after many hours of use.
When this second abrasion operation is carried out manually using an appropriate tool, it is preferably carried out in a single pass of the abrasive tool.
In the example illustrated, the streaks of the first and second patterns are vertical relative to the direction of reading of the dial.
It is obviously possible to repeat steps 2 and 3 above (addition of a layer of tinted material and second abrasion operation), by changing the tint for the layer of tinted material, to vary or accentuate the 'final effect.
The combination of the above steps makes it possible to obtain a metal dial produced from a new component but having an appearance close to aged painted wood, while this material is not optimal for use as a dial in a timepiece for the aforementioned reasons of the prior art.
It is possible to apply prior to the method described above all the usual preparation steps to the substrate and to its first metal surface (cutting out windows, smoothing the surface, sandblasting to mattify it, etc.). Likewise, it is obviously possible to then apply to the dial obtained by the above process all the shaping and protection steps usually implemented in the production of a dial (protective varnishing, zapping, laying of index...).
