Description
Apoth. Zeitg. 128, 174-180 (1988) und F. Heinzer, M. Chavanne, J.-P. Meusy, H.-P. Maître, E. Giger und T.W. Baumann, Pharm. Acta Helv. in press (1988) No. 4).

The present invention relates to a process for the production of a plant-based pharmaceutical composition which comprises a combination of mother tinctures from Echinacea angustifolia (narrow-leaved coneflower), Echinacea pallida (pale coneflower) and Echinacea purpurea (red coneflower) and vegetable, ethereal oils, for example from peppermint and thyme.
The agent is a combination of an immunostimulant (Echinacea extracts) and an aromatherapeutic agent with antibiotic properties (ethereal \ le) based on fresh plants.
It is particularly useful for the phytotherapeutic treatment of general infections, colds, flu infections, bronchitis, inflammation and infections of the oral cavity and nasal / pharynx, urogenital tract infections and naturally occurring immune deficiency associated with repeated infectious diseases.
The composition produced according to the invention can also be part of mouthwash and gargle agents.
Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea pallida and Echinacea purpurea are common plants in North America. Already the indigenous people used parts of Echinacea plants for medicinal purposes, e.g. for the treatment of wounds and against snake bites.
These plants then became established as medicinal plants in North America and were also brought to Europe at the end of the last century.
To date, there are numerous drugs that contain Echinacea preparations, and a number of publications are also concerned with these drugs (for pharmacology, see: R. Bauer, H. Wagner et al., "Immunological in-vivo and in-vitro examinations of Echinacea extracts ", Arzneimittel-Forsch./Drug-Res. Vol. 38, 276-281 (1988) and references cited therein). It was found that in addition to the water-soluble polysaccharide fraction, lipophilic ingredients in particular have an immunostimulating effect. In recent times, the knowledge about the chemical constituents of the various Echinacea species has also been strongly promoted (cf. R. Bauer, P. Remiger and H. Wagner, Dtsch. Apoth. Zeitg. 128, 174-180 (1988) and F. Heinzer, M. Chavanne, J.-P. Meusy, H.-P. Maître, E. Giger and TW Baumann, Pharm. Acta Helv. In press (1988) No. 4).
For a long time, essential oils from plants have also been used to treat various diseases. Since the ethereal oils are heterogeneously composed of different chemical components (especially terpenes and phenylpropane derivatives), they have a variety of different effects, including: there are \ le with bacteriostatic / bactericidal and / or fungostatic / fungicidal properties (e.g. from thymus, rosmarinus, lavandula, satureja etc.).
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing a plant-based pharmaceutical combination, which agent causes a rapid healing of infections and reduces the occurrence of relapses after the therapy.
It has now been found that when the composition according to the invention is used to treat infections after the acute condition has been quickly overcome, the occurrence of relapses is significantly reduced. The advantageous effects can be attributed in particular to the combination of antibiotically active oils with immunostimulating plant extracts.
The present invention accordingly relates to the method for producing a plant-based pharmaceutical composition as defined in claims 1 to 6.
The abbreviation HAB used in the claim section means "homeopathic pharmacopoeia". The regulations for the manufacture, examination and quality of homeopathic preparations are laid down here. In homeopathy, tinctures are preferably obtained from fresh plants (possibly also from dried vegetables) by percolation or maceration with 2 to 10 times the amount by weight of ethanol. The precise regulations for each drug can be found in the HAB (see also "Ullman's Encyclopedia of Technical Chemistry", 3rd edition, vol. 8, pp. 599-606).
In the pharmaceutical composition obtained according to the invention, a proven combination of ethereal oils with specially effective antibiotic properties is combined with fresh Echinacea plant extracts. While the Echinacea immunostimulants take a certain amount of time to develop their para-immunity-enhancing effects optimally, the ethereal aromatic antibiotics are quick-acting. As confirmed in vivo tests, the ethereal \ le have bacteriostatic and fungostatic properties (Bardeau F./Fesneau M. "La médicine aromatique", Paris 1976; Furlenmeier M. "Mysteries of Medicine" Chapter "Aromatherapy", Stäfa 1981; Valnet J. "Aromatherapy" 8th ed. Lausanne 1976; and Schilcher H. "Etherische \ le - Effects und Side Effects", Deutsche Apotheker-Zeitung, 124, 1433, 1984).
The pharmaceutical composition obtained according to the invention on the basis of tinctures and ethereal oils from medicinal plants increases the body's defenses against bacteria and viruses (paraimmunity) and at the same time shows anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects. Accordingly, the compositions are useful for the therapy of the following conditions; General infections, colds, flu infections, bronchitis, inflammation and infections of the oral cavity and the nose / throat. They can also be used in cases of general immune deficiency with recurrent infections and susceptibility to colds, flu and minor infections in the ENT area.
As a rule, the compositions according to the invention are administered orally by taking 20-25 drops in half to a glass of lukewarm water 3 to 5 times a day; the patient should salivate, gargle and swallow well. Children from 6 to 12 years of age take half the dose, while administration to younger children is at the doctor's discretion.
In case of inflammation of the oral cavity, inflammation of the gums, bad breath, etc., the composition can also be used as a pure mouthwash and gargle solution with the same or weaker dosage.
Patients who find the active herbal ingredients unpleasant in terms of taste can either take the medication more diluted or in more frequent, smaller doses.
It is also possible that the ethereal oils can intensify existing heartburn or can lead to itching, burning and skin infections in the case of hypersensitivity reactions on the skin, these symptoms disappearing after stopping the medication.
