Description
The invention is in the field of liquid crystal displays and relates to a display panel of this type in a matrix arrangement.
Brody et al «A 6 « x 6» 20 lines per inch Liquid Crystal Display Panel» in IEEE Trans, on Electron Devices ED-20 P995,1973. As a development of Westinghouse Electric Co., liquid crystal display panels in a matrix arrangement have become known, in which a thin film from the vapor phase is deposited in the course of the manufacturing process, via which field-effect transistors and parasitic capacitors are built into the surface of the display panel; see. especially the technical paper by T.P. Brody et al "A 6" x 6 "20 lines per inch Liquid Crystal Display Panel" in IEEE Trans, on Electron Devices ED-20 P995, 1973. In this publication it is mentioned that the liquid crystal display panel carrying the thin film transistors in matrix arrangement had the twisted nematic field effect mode (TN-FEM). It has now been shown, however, that this known TN-FEM-type liquid crystal display panel was relatively complicated to manufacture and difficult to bring to a higher contrast ratio.
The invention is therefore based on the object of proposing an improved liquid crystal display panel of the type mentioned which does not have the disadvantages which the known display panel has.
The inventive solution to this problem is specified in claim 1, advantageous developments can be found in the dependent claims.
An essential feature of the invention is that the layer which is sandwiched between the transistor on the one hand and the transparent and electrically conductive film on the other hand has a guest / host effect and contains a multicolored color material.
Darin zeigen: Some exemplary embodiments containing the features of the invention are explained in more detail below in conjunction with a drawing. In it show:

As already briefly indicated in the introduction to the description, the invention makes use of the so-called guest / host effect in the case of the liquid crystal display, namely that a multicolored 20-color material is added to the liquid crystal material serving as a guest and dissolved therein.
Such guest / host effects are excited in liquid crystal materials in such a way that an electric field is applied to such a system with a multicolored color material as a guest and a liquid crystal material as a host, 2sand then so-called electrical field modification effects occur, the liquid crystal molecules become a rotation around the Longitudinal axes of the multicolored color material induce and modulate the light absorption for display purposes. See, for example, the Fachdruck-3oschschrift Appi. Phys. Lett. 13 91 (1968). The corresponding cell structure and the optical system are shown in FIGS. 1 (a) and 1 (b).
1 (a) schematically shows the basic structure of a guest / host effect liquid crystal cell of the reflecting type, which includes a liquid crystal material layer 20 with added multicolored color material, a pair of electrodes 19 and 19 ', a pair of transparent substrates 18 and 18 ', a polarizer 17 and a light scattering plate 21 arranged on the rear of the cell. In a modification of this embodiment, according to FIG is formed by an Al electrode 23 applied to a polished glass plate 24 and ensures a higher contrast ratio. 45 The embodiment of FIG. 1 (b) forms a preferred embodiment of the invention for a liquid crystal display cell with guest / host effect. An alternative way of forming a light-scattering electrode is, for example, to first coat a glass plate with a 5-photoresist film, which is then partially irradiated with light through a suitable mask and partially dissolved with hydrofluoric acid (HF) or the like, so that a jagged surface is formed on it is formed. Then a layer of Al is deposited on the jagged surface of the glass plate. This alternative route is recommended if only one display zone with the exception of a thin-film transistor arrangement and X and Y electrodes has to be polished.
Fig. 2 shows a preferred embodiment of a liquid crystal display panel in a matrix arrangement with guest / host effect, 6, wherein each matrix crossing point is driven by a thin film transistor 6 and a parasitic capacitor 8. This panel also contains a drain electrode 5, a liquid crystal cell 7, a gate electrode 3, a source electrode 1 and X lines n, n +1 and Y lines m, 65m + 1.
In Fig. 3 the course of the drive voltages for the liquid crystal display panel in a matrix arrangement of Fig. 2 is shown schematically, the upper line of the
Source voltage, the middle line of the gate voltage and the lower line of the drain voltage is assigned. Although the representation in FIGS. 2 and 3 is limited to only one cell or one element of a display matrix, it should be pointed out that many such cells lie one behind the other in the X and Y directions and thus form the display matrix.
Some mask shapes (application or photo masks) and manufacturing steps in the production of the thin-film transistor array substrate according to the invention are described below.
Step 1: Using a mask shown in Fig. 4 (a), an electrode 25 of the capacitor 8 and the gate electrode 3 are simultaneously applied to the substrate, the electrode material is Al or the like. This step is shown in perspective in FIG. 5 (a) and in section in FIG. 6 (a).
Dieser Isolierfilm 26 hat folgende Funktionen: Step 2: An insulating film 26 consisting of SiO 2, for example, is applied entirely, see the perspective representation of the film in FIG. 5 (b) and the cross section in FIG. 6 (b). This insulating film 26 has the following functions:
1) die Gateelektrode 3 wird im Kreuzungsbereich gegenüber einer in Schritt 4 aufgebrachten Sourceelektrode 40 elektrisch getrennt; 1) the gate electrode 3 is electrically separated in the crossing region from a source electrode 40 applied in step 4;
2) der Isolierfilm 26 dient als Isolierschicht für die Gateelektrode des Thin-Film-Transistor-Elements (TFT-Ele-ment); und 2) the insulating film 26 serves as an insulating layer for the gate electrode of the thin film transistor element (TFT element); and
3) der Isolierfilm 26 bildet eine dielektrische Schicht für den Kondensator 8. 3) the insulating film 26 forms a dielectric layer for the capacitor 8.
Per- Step 3: A tellurium semiconductor film 27 is applied to the insulating film 26 so that it lies over the gate electrode 3; the mask of Fig. 5 (b) is used here. By-

spektivisch ist dieser Film in Fig. 5 (c) und im Querschnitt in Fig. 6 (c) dargestellt. this film is shown in perspective in FIG. 5 (c) and in cross section in FIG. 6 (c).
Step 4: Using a mask shown in Fig. 4 (c), a source electrode 40, a drain and a picture element 41 of the liquid crystal cell are formed on the side of the TFT substrate. These elements consist of AI, Au or the like. These electrodes are shown in perspective in FIG. 5 (d) and in section in FIG. 6 (d).
With the steps described so far, one substrate or one base 18 of the matrix liquid crystal display panel according to the invention is produced, and, as the sectional illustration of the finished matrix display according to FIG. 7 shows, it also has a second one Base 18 ', which carries a transparent and electrically conductive film 23, which i5 is assigned to all the picture elements together. Subsequently, a transparent insulating film a30 made of SiO, Si02 or the like is applied over both electrodes and treated by means of oblique vapor deposition or a rubbing technique for twisted nematic alignment. Both supports 20, 18, 18 'are firmly connected to one another by a sealing element 32. Thereafter, the liquid crystal material 20 is injected together with the color material. To complete the display panel in a matrix arrangement, a single polarizer 17 is installed outside of this liquid crystal display cell.
It is possible to apply the capacitor electrode 25, the gate electrode 3 and the X-line electrodes simultaneously and from the same material (AI). Furthermore, it is possible to apply the picture element electrodes 41 of the liquid crystal cell and the source and drain electrodes of the thin film transistor (TFT) at the same time with the same material (Al or Au). This significantly simplifies the manufacture of the liquid crystal display panel.
