5. Use of the connection device according to claim 1 in the context of the repair or extension of a preexisting gas distribution network.
The present invention relates to a connection device for fluid, and in particular gas pipes, intended to connect a section of steel pipe to at least one section of pipe made of a material different from a fluid distribution network. , for example in gray or ductile iron.
The repair of fluid pipes, such as gas or drinking water, sometimes makes it necessary to replace a pipe section of an existing network. With regard to gas distribution networks, we know that almost all of these networks date from an era when the tubes used were made of ductile iron, if not gray iron.
Today, the pipes used to replace faulty pipes are almost always made of steel, as are the distribution networks installed recently. The use of steel tubes has the particular advantage that it can be connected to one another by means of a weld (eg autogenous weld or voltaic arc weld) ensuring long term a seal much superior to the use of a seal which risks drying out, so that the connection between two tubes becomes leaky.
However, it is known that only pieces of steel can be welded together properly. In particular, soldering is never done on cast iron parts. So we have always given up resorting to welding when connecting between a steel tube and a tube of different material, in particular when replacing cast iron tubes with steel tubes in case of repair of a gas distribution network.
For the sake of clarity, it may be good to specify that welding was not absolutely banned from the repair of fluid distribution pipes. Sometimes the section of a pipe, e.g. cast iron, to replace, or the length of several steel tubes, in which case these steel tubes can be welded together. On the other hand, the use of a connection between a cast iron section and a steel section is not specific to cases of replacement of a defective cast iron section.
A connection may be necessary when extending an existing network (we will come back to the particularity of multiple connections below). - Rather than saying that the invention relates to a connection device for replacing the tubes of a section, for example of cast iron, by steel tubes, it will be said that it relates to a device for connection between steel pipe section and pipe section of a different material, in a fluid distribution network.
In the known technique, such a connection was always carried out by means of a device overlapping the end of both of the tubes of the sections to be connected to each other, a device whose internal diameter corresponds to diameter respectively of one and the other of the tubes and which comprises at least two seals each applying to the external wall of one of the tubes. Known in particular are ductile iron fittings consisting of a short sleeve, the two ends of which are each provided with a seal held between a pair of flanges tightened against each other by means of screws.
The device according to the invention differs from the known devices by the characteristics of which in claim 1.
The advantages of the device according to the invention will be explained with the aid of the appended drawing which represents in section a particular embodiment of the device according to the invention.
We see the end of the tube of a section of cast iron pipe (1) and the end of the tube of a steel pipe (2) connected together by means of the connection device comprising at one end a sleeve (3). At the other end, the device has a pair of fixing flanges (4, 5) having an internal diameter corresponding to the external diameter of the cast iron pipe (1) and whose tightening by means of screws (6) plates a joint. sealing (7) in elastomer against the external wall of the end of the cast iron tube (1); considered in isolation, the fact of tightening a seal such as (7) by means of a pair of flanges (4 and 5) tightened one against the other, is obviously known in the state of the art.
As for the sleeve (3), it is made of steel - it will be seen below that the connector according to the invention need not be entirely made of steel - and has the same internal and external diameters as the steel tube (2 ) of the connected section.
Its characteristics allow easy welding (8) with the steel tube (2) of the connected pipe, welding carried out by known methods, for example autogenous welding or voltaic arc welding.
The embodiment shown in the drawing makes it possible to understand the technical advantage of the solution according to the invention compared to the known technique: In known devices there is a seal and therefore a risk of leakage as well. end of the cast iron tube (1) than that of the steel tube (2), while in the connection device according to the invention, only the seal remains on the end of the cast iron tube (1) . In other words, the use of the device according to the invention makes it possible to reduce very exactly by half the number of weak points - namely the seals - of the connections between sections of pipe of steel and sections of pipe of different material, by example in cast iron.
It is understood that the connector according to the invention can be made entirely of steel. But in the particular embodiment shown in the drawing, the fixing flanges (4 and 5) are made of ductile iron. The assembly of the two steel (3) and cast iron (4, 5) parts of the device is done by embedding the sleeve (3) in the fixing flange (4), the internal diameter of which has been previously machined. The seal (7) tightened between the front face of the flange (4) and the
rear face of the flange (5) is of trapezoidal section so that it adapts to the front face of the flange (4). - The advantage of such an embodiment lies in the economy of means achieved during the manufacture of the connection device: There are on the market connection devices in ductile iron in the form of a sleeve carrying each from its ends a pair of flanges each provided with a seal. Rather than manufacturing an all-steel fitting, we can therefore cut the ends of such a fitting of known type - we will get two each time - and insert a steel sleeve (3) as described here and shown in the drawing.
The difference in wall thickness (therefore the difference between internal and external diameters) of a steel pipe (2) and that, for example, of a cast iron pipe (1), between which the connection is made, is compensated by a bulge of the sleeve (3) visible in the drawing.
As mentioned above, the connection device according to the invention can be used not only when replacing a pipe section (defective, e.g. in cast iron) with a steel pipe section, but also when the extension of an existing network, whether it is the extension in steel tube of a section of pipe previously closed at its end or one or more new branches by means of a multiple connection, by ex. T-shaped steel, on a pre-existing pipe.
Finally, it should be noted that the use of the device according to the invention is not limited to the connection between a section of steel pipe and a section of cast iron. Connection is possible with a section of any material, such as PVC or Eternit. The use of these materials is possible for fluids such as water.
