Beispiel I

EMI7.1
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of diglycidyl dicarboxylates by transesterification of dialkyl dicarboxylates with glycidol.
Several processes for the preparation of diglycidyl dicarboxylates are already known. Of the four methods described in summary in the introduction in Die Angewandte Makromolekulare Chemie 31 (1973) 83-113, such as a) reaction with glycidol with acid chlorides, b) reaction of epichlorohydrin with salts of acids, c) reaction of epichlorohydrin with acids and the following
Dehydrohalogenation, d) epoxidation of allyl esters, only the reaction of epichlorohydrin with carboxylic acids with elimination of hydrogen chloride in the presence of sodium hydroxide solution has been successful in technology, so that dicarboxylic acid diglycidyl esters on an industrial scale are almost exclusively obtained by this process to this day.
The products obtained by this process have the disadvantage that they are not free from aliphatically bound chlorine, i. hydrolyzable chlorine, and are therefore not well suited for some applications, in particular for encapsulating or encasing electrical or electronic components, because of the poorer electrical properties of the resin and the corrosive effect of chlorine. The method mentioned under d), the epoxidation of allyl esters, is rarely used for the production of glycidyl esters because this reaction is technologically difficult.
GB Patent 1,118,206 already describes the preparation of epoxy esters by transesterification of mono- or dicarboxylic acid esters, e.g. Dimethyl terephthalate (Example 6), described with epoxy alcohols in the presence of alkaline catalysts. Glycidol is also generally mentioned as a suitable epoxy alcohol for this purpose, but no corresponding exemplary embodiment is available. However, our own experiments have shown that the transesterification of e.g. Dimethyl terephthalate with glycidol in the presence of alkaline catalysts cannot be carried out since, in addition to large amounts of polymeric solid product, only a reaction mixture consisting of approximately equal parts of diglycidyl terephthalate and glycidyl methyl terephthalate with a low epoxide content is obtained.
Example 8 of French patent 2 088 971 also describes the production of glycidyl methacrylate by transesterification of methacrylate with glycidol in deficit and in the presence of thallium oxide as a catalyst, the methanol formed in the transesterification being distilled off azeotropically with the excess methyl acrylate. The yield of glycidyl methacrylate, based on the glycidol used, is only 65% of the theoretically obtainable amount, which is understandable if one takes into account the polymerization tendency of the glycidol.
In the transesterification of dicarboxylic acid dialkyl esters with glycidyl to give dicarboxylic acid diglycidyl esters, increased difficulties and therefore significantly lower yields than 65% were to be expected from the outset due to the difunctionality of the ester component.
It has now been found that the transesterification of dicar bonsäredialkylesters with glycidol to dicarboxylic acid diglycidyl esters surprisingly succeeds in high yields and with high epoxide contents if the transesterification is carried out with at least stoichiometric amounts of glycidol, preferably with a stoichiometric excess of glycidyl, and in the presence of thallium compounds as a transesterification catalyst, preferably in an organic solvent, and the alcohol formed in the transesterification is continuously removed from the reaction mixture and the transesterification temperature is set so that the glycidol is not removed from the reaction mixture during the transesterification reaction.
The present invention thus relates to a process for the preparation of diglycidyl dicarboxylates of the formula I.
EMI1.1
wherein A is a divalent aromatic, aromatic, araliphatic, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, heterocyclic or heterocyclic-aliphatic radical interrupted by oxygen atoms, characterized in that dialkyl dicarboxylates of the formula II
ROOC-A-COOR '(II) where R and R' each denote an alkyl radical containing 1 to 7 carbon atoms, transesterified with at least stoichiometric amounts of glycidol in the presence of a thallium compound as a catalyst in the temperature range from 50 to 120 ° C. and during the transesterification resulting alcohol is continuously removed from the reaction mixture.
The process according to the invention preferably relates to the preparation of diglycidyl dicarboxylates of the formula I in which A is an aromatic or aliphatic radical, and is characterized in that dialkyl dicarboxylates of the formula II in which R and R 'each represent an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms , with 1.05 to 1.5 moles of glycidol per 1 equivalent of alkyl ester group in the presence of thallium oxide or a thallium salt in an organic solvent in the temperature range from 60 to 90 ° C.
In a particular embodiment of the process according to the invention, the starting point is the dimethyl esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and thallium oxide or thallium acetate is used as the transesterification catalyst.
Since the transesterification is always accompanied by a more or less pronounced polymerization of the epoxy compounds, the transesterification should take place as quickly as possible and under mild reaction conditions. In addition to choosing the most favorable catalyst and maintaining the optimal reaction temperature, it is advantageous to use glycidol in a stoichiometric excess and only to constantly remove the alcohol formed during the transesterification from the reaction mixture.
The stoichiometric excess of glycidol in the process according to the invention can also be more than 1.5 mol of glycidol per 1 equivalent of alkyl ester group, but no noteworthy advantages are achieved.
The transesterification reaction is preferably carried out in an organic solvent in which the reaction components are at least partially soluble. When using liquid dialkyl dicarboxylates or solid dialkyl dicarboxylates which are soluble or partially soluble in glycidol, the transesterification reaction can also be carried out without the addition of a solvent. Suitable organic solvents are those which have a boiling point between that of the alcohol formed in the transesterification and that of glycidol. This is to ensure that the glycidol remains in solution and only the alcohol formed during the transesterification is distilled off from the reaction mixture.
Solvents with the same boiling point as glycidol (below 760 mm Hg = 162-163 C [decomposition]; below 13 mm Hg = 54 C) are still suitable as the upper limit. Particularly suitable solvents are aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene and trimethylbenzene. Aliphatic hydrocarbons such as heptane, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, higher aliphatic ethers such as dipropyl and dibutyl ethers, cyclic ethers such as dioxane and trioxane, ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone, and acetonitrile or dimethylformamide can also be used as solvents. The solvent is expediently used in an amount from 0.5 to 10 times the weight, based on the total weight of dialkyl dicarboxylate and glycidol.
The transesterification is carried out in the temperature range from 50 to 1200C. The reaction temperature in the transesterification process according to the invention is preferably 60 to 90 C.
The thallium compounds used as transesterification catalysts are preferably used in a concentration of 10-2 to 10-3 mol per 1 mol of dialkyl dicarboxylate. Inorganic and organic thallium compounds, such as thallium oxide, thallium salts and thallium complex compounds, are suitable as thallium compounds. In particular, thallium oxide or thallium acetate is used as the transesterification catalyst in the process according to the invention.
Suitable dialkyl dicarboxylates are the dialkyl esters of aromatic, araliphatic, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, heterocyclic and heterocyclic-aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, it being possible for the alkyl groups to contain up to 7 carbon atoms. The dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl or dibutyl esters of aromatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids are preferably used in the process according to the invention.
The suitable dialkyl esters are derived e.g. of the following dicarboxylic acids. Aromatic dicarboxylic acids that may be mentioned are: phthalic acid, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, 2,5-dimethylterephthalic acid, naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid, naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, diphenyl ether-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid , Diphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid and diphenyl-2,2'-dicarboxylic acid, tetrachlorophthalic acid and 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid.
Araliphatic dicarboxylic acids that may be mentioned are: o-, m- and p-phenylenediacetic acid, catechol-O, O-diacetic acid, hydroquinone-O, O-diacetic acid and resorcinol-O, odiacetic acid.
The dialkyl esters of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acids can be derived from unsubstituted or alkyl- and / or phenyl-substituted saturated or unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. Such dicarboxylic acids are e.g. called:
Oxalic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, 2,3-diphenylsuccinic acid, adipic acid, 2,2,4-trimethyladipic acid and 2,4,4-trimethyladipic acid and mixtures thereof containing both isomers, sebacic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid and those produced by the addition of acrylonitrile or acrylic acid esters Compounds with activatable hydrogen atoms, such as ketones, nitrogen compounds, diols or dithiols, obtainable dicarboxylic acids.
Representatives of the cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids are: tetrahydrophthalic acid, methyl-tetrahydrophthalic acid, isomerized 4-methyl-tetrahydrophthalic acid, endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic acid.
Hexahydrophthalic acid, methylhexahydrophthalic acid, endomethylene hexahydrophthalic acid, hexahydroterephthalic acid and hexahydroisophthalic acid.
Also included are the dialkyl esters of the dicarboxylic acids containing a heterocyclic ring. such as.
Thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, furan-3, 4-dicarboxylic acid, pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid and unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted 1,3-bis (carboxyethyl) hydantoin, usable.
The diglycidyl esters are liquid or solid and can be purified using the usual methods, such as distillation, extraction, sublimation and recrystallization. In many cases, however, it is possible to dispense with purification of the products obtained by the process according to the invention, since these are obtained in relatively pure form and meet the technical requirements.
They are suitable for encasing or embedding electrical or electronic components.
Example I.
194 g of dimethyl terephthalate (1.0 mol) are transesterified with 177.6 g of glycidol (2.4 mol) in 1200 ml of m-xylene in the presence of 2.9 g of thallium oxide in the following apparatus: There is a reaction vessel with a stirrer and thermometer a packed column on which a reflux condenser A heated to 400C is placed. Its upper end is connected by a glass arch to a descending cooler B, which is cooled with water at 150C; the template is cooled in ice.
The reaction mixture is then heated to an internal temperature of 80 ° C. in an oil bath while stirring and the methanol formed is drawn in vapor form through the heated condenser A at a pressure of 100-120 mm Hg into the condenser B and condensed there. m-xylene runs back from cooler A to the column.
Both at the beginning and at the end of the reaction, the reaction mixture consists of a clear solution in which the Tl203 catalyst is suspended. From time to time samples are taken from the mixture, which are examined by thin-layer chromatography. You can follow the course of the reaction in this way.
After 14 hours no dimethyl terephthalate and only a trace of the intermediate methyl terephthalic acid glycidyl diester can be detected. The warm solution is filtered off from the catalyst. The diglycidyl terephthalate crystallizes out of the filtrate in the refrigerator overnight.
It is suctioned off, the filter cake is washed out with a little m-xylene and dried in a vacuum oven at 55 ° C.
216.7 g (77.9% of theory) of product with a melting point of 1031060C and an epoxide content of 6.75 equivalents per kg (theory: 7.19) are obtained.
Further diglycidyl terephthalate can be isolated from the mother liquor as follows: To remove excess glycidol, the solution is extracted three times with 100 ml of water each time and the solution is then concentrated to dryness on a rotary evaporator. Recrystallization of the residue (61.5 g) from 300 ml of isopropanol results in a further 46.0 g of substance with a melting point of 103-1060C and an epoxide content of
6.90 equivalents per kg. The total yield of diglycidyl terephthalate is thus 262.7 g (94.4% of theory).
Example 2
194 g of dimethyl terephthalate (1.00 mol) are reacted in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 162.8 g of glycidol (2.20 mol) in 1200 ml of m-xylene at 80 ° C. in the presence of 2.90 g of Tl203 No starting product is detectable for 24 hours and only a trace of glycidyl methyl terephthalate can be detected in the thin-layer chromatogram. The warm solution is filtered off from the catalyst; the diglycidyl terephthalate crystallizes out on cooling. After cooling in the refrigerator, suction and drying in a vacuum drying cabinet at 65 ° C., 222 is obtained , 7 g of substance (80.0% of theory) with a melting point of 101-105 ° C., which has 6.84 epoxide equivalents per kg. The mother liquor is extracted three times with 100 ml of H 2 O and concentrated to dryness on a rotary evaporator.
Recrystallization of the residue twice from isopropanol gives a further 22.4 g of product (8.0% of theory) with a melting point of 100-1030 ° C. and an epoxide content of 6.72 equivalents per kg.
Example 3
97.0 g of dimethyl terephthalate (0.50 mol) are transesterified in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 148 g of glycidol (2.00 mol) in 500 ml of toluene at 80 ° C. in the presence of 1.47 g of Tl203, with the methanol formed escapes at a pressure of 150-200 mm Hg through the cooler heated to 48 C. After a reaction time of 81/2 hours, no dimethyl terephthalate and only a small amount of glycidyl methyl terephthalate can be detected in the thin-layer chromatogram. The solution is filtered off warm from the catalyst and, after cooling, it is extracted in a separating funnel three times with 80 ml of water. There are three phases. The aqueous phase is separated off and extracted twice more with 100 ml of toluene each time.
After the extracts have been combined with the two organic phases that were first separated off, they are concentrated on a rotary evaporator at a bath temperature of 60 ° C. and a pressure of 10 mm Hg. 125.9 g of crude product with an epoxide content of 6.61 equivalents per kg are obtained.
Recrystallization from 650 ml of isopropanol gives 100.0 g of diglycidyl terephthalate (72.2% of theory) with a melting point of 103-1060 ° C. and an epoxide content of 6.81 equivalents per kg.
Example 4
58.2 g of dimethyl terephthalate (0.30 mol) are in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 53.3 g of glycidol (0.72 mol) in 360 ml of m-xylene at 80 C in the presence of 0.45 g of thallium ( I) acetate transesterified. After a reaction time of 15 hours, no starting product and only very little glycidyl methyl terephthalate can be detected. A slight cloudiness is filtered off and the filtrate is extracted three times with 50 ml of H 2 O each time. After the solution has been concentrated on a rotary evaporator, the crude product is recrystallized from isopropanol.
65.5 g (78.5% of theory) of a first fraction with a melting point of 103-105 ° C. and an epoxide content of 6.86 equivalents per kg and 13.6 g of a second fraction (16.3% of theory) are obtained Melting point 100-102 C and an epoxy content of 6.74 equivalents per kg.
Comparative example
According to British patent 1118 206, 48.5 g of dimethyl terephthalate (0.25 mol) were added in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 44.4 g of glycidol (0.60 mol) in 300 ml of m xylene at 80 ° C. in the presence of sodium methylate (prepared from 0.086 g of sodium and 8.6 ml of methanol) transesterified. After just 2 to 3 hours of reaction time, polymeric solid product separated out on the flask wall, the amount of which increased sharply after a total of 6 hours of reaction time. The dissolved fractions of the reaction mixture were examined for their epoxide content after 6 hours; it was 0.90 equivalents per kg and had decreased sharply from the value of 1.62 equivalents per kg determined at the beginning of the reaction. After 6 hours, only a small amount of dimethyl terephthalate was still detectable in the thin-layer chromatogram.
In addition to the desired diglycidyl terephthalate, however, due to the intensity of the chromatogram spots, the presence of approximately the same amounts of the one-sidedly transesterified terephthalic acid-glycidylmethyl diester could be determined.
In comparison to this, in the process carried out according to the invention according to Example 1, the total epoxide content of the solution increased over the entire test duration of 14 hours from 1.60 to 1.74 equivalents per kg, since methanol distilled off and the epoxide concentration increased as a result.
If one converts taking into account the distillate, the total epoxide content in Example 1 remained constant.
Example 5
58.2 g of dimethyl phthalate (0.30 mol) are transesterified in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 53.3 g of glycidol (0.72 mol) in 360 ml of m-xylene at 80 ° C. in the presence of 0.78 g of Tl2O3. In the thin-layer chromatogram, only traces of methyl glycidyl phthalate can be detected after 24 hours; Dimethyl phthalate is then no longer present. To remove the excess glycidol, the reaction solution is extracted with three 50 ml portions of water and the aqueous phase is washed twice with 50 ml of chloroform. Removal of the m-xylene on a rotary evaporator gives 80.5 g of residue, and removal of the chloroform gives a residue of 2.7 g.
Both products are combined and post-treated for one hour at a bath temperature of 75oC in a high vacuum using a boiling capillary to remove residual solvent. 80.8 g (97.2% of theory) of product with an epoxide content of 6.59 equivalents per kg (theory: 7.19) are obtained.
For further purification, 4.11 g of the crude product are distilled in a bulb tube furnace at a pressure of 0.001 mm Hg and an oven temperature of a maximum of 2200C. 3.00 g of distillate are obtained, which is over 98% pure by gas chromatography. Converted, this corresponds to a yield of 70% of theory.

Comparative example
According to British patent 1118 206, 48.5 g of dimethyl terephthalate (0.25 mol) were added to the apparatus described in Example 1 with 44.4 g of glycidol (0.60
Mol) in 300 ml of m xylene at 805C in the presence of sodium methylate (prepared from 0.086 g of sodium and 8.6 ml of methanol).
Example 22
Diglycidyl phthalate
58.2 g of dimethyl phthalate (0.30 mol) are in the apparatus described in Example 1 with 53.3 g of freshly distilled glycidol (0.72 mol) in 300 ml of m-xylene at 80 ° C. in the presence of 0.82 g of Tl ( OCOCH3) 3 11/2 H20 interesterified. After 6 1/2 hours, only traces of intermediate methyl glycidyl phthalate can be detected in the thin layer chromatogram; Dimethyl phthalate is no longer present.
The solution is filtered to remove a slight cloudiness, it is extracted 5 times with 40 ml of water and the solution is concentrated on a rotary evaporator at 70 ° C. under a water jet vacuum, with 78.6 g of crude product (94.2% of theory) remaining.
A further 4.4 g of product can be isolated by extraction of the water phases with chloroform, which are combined with the main amount. To remove residual solvent, the product is aftertreated in a distillation apparatus with a boiling capillary for one hour at 75 ° C. and a pressure of 0.01 mm Hg; residue 80.8 g (theory: 98.6 g) of crude diglycidyl phthalate that is liquid at room temperature with a Epoxy content of 7.14 equivalents per kg (theory: 7.19 epoxy equivalents / kg).
For cleaning, 6.35 g of the product are distilled in a bulb tube furnace at a pressure of 0.016 mm Hg. 5.33 g of distillate are obtained (most of the amount distilled at an oven temperature of 167 ° C.); converted, this corresponds to a yield of 83.9% of theory.
Example 23
Succinic acid diglycidyl ester
36.5 g of dimethyl succinate (0.25 mol) are transesterified as in Example 1 with 44.4 g of glycidol (0.60 mol) in 300 ml of m xylene at 80 ° C. in the presence of 0.73 g of TkO3.
After 9 hours, no dimethyl succinate and only a trace of the mixed ester can be detected in the thin-layer chromatogram. The warm solution is filtered off from the catalyst and concentrated on a rotary evaporator at a bath temperature of 60 ° C., 58.6 g of crude product remaining.
The distillation of 6.20 g of crude product in a Kugelrohr oven at a pressure of 0.004 mm Hg and an oven temperature of a maximum of 210 ° C. gives 4.62 g of distillate, which is over 97% pure by gas chromatography. Converted, the yield is 76.0% of theory. The product solidifies in crystalline form at room temperature and has an epoxide content of 8.68 equivalents per kg (theory: 8.69).
2.0 g of distilled product are recrystallized twice from 6 times the amount of isopropanol. Crystals with a melting point of 56-60 "C are obtained.
