Abstract
The hardness tester comprises an outer cylindrical housing (87) with diametrically-opposed handles for operating the device (90). The housing has an inner ring (97) through which passes a central cylinder (88). This cylinder carries a projecting ring (95) with bevelled rim (96) which supports the corresponding face of the other ring (97) through a ball-bearing race (99). The upper part carries an indicating dial (93) and pointer operated by a hydraulic mechanism energised during operation. The tester is first correctly centred over the work-piece surface and downward pressure on the handles causes a pointed probe to be forced vertically down through a double coil spring coupling mechanism within the central cylinder (88). This actuates the metering device and the hardness value can be read off directly from the top of the instrument.
