P.F. =191-192 C.

The subject of the present invention is a process for the preparation of novel monoazo dyes which are insoluble in water, which are particularly useful for the dyeing of synthetic fibers.
These new compounds can be represented by the general formula:
EMI1.1
in which R represents a methyl or ethyl group, R1 represents an optionally substituted alkyl group, Rz represents a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl group and the benzene ring A can be substituted, the dyes being free of a group causing solubility in water by formation of ions, such as free sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid groups.
As optional substituents for the alkyl groups represented by R1 and R2, mention may be made of halogen atoms, nitrile, hydroxy, alkoxy, acyl, acyloxy and carbalkoxy groups. As examples of radicals R1 and R2 may be mentioned methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, P-cyanoethyl, ss-hydroxyethyl, t3, dihydroxypropyl, carbomethoxyethyl, ss-acetoxyethyl, ss, -diacetoxypropyl, methoxyethyl, ss-chloroethyl, acetyl groups -2 ethyl, ss-cinnamoyloxyethyl, ss-benzoyloxyethyl. As examples of radicals R1, mention may also be made of dimethoxycarbonyl-1,2-ethyl, diethoxycarbonyl-1,2-ethyl, hydroxy-2-3-chloro-propyl groups,
2-acetoxy-3-chloropropyl.
As possible substituents of ring A, mention may be made of halogen atoms and alkyl, alkoxy and acylamino groups.
The dyes are prepared according to the invention by coupling the diazo derivative of an amine of formula:
EMI1.2
with a compound of formula:
EMI1.3
A, R, Rl and R2 being as defined above.
The amines of formula (II) are new products. They can be prepared from the amines of the formula:
EMI1.4
described in French Patent No. 1600818, for example by reaction with thiocyanogen and subsequent cyclization of the ss-acyloxyethyl esters of 4-amino-5-thiocyanato-benzoic acid thus obtained.
As examples of couplers of formula (III) may be mentioned N-ethylaniline, N-propylaniline, N-butylaniline, N-ethyl N- (ss-cyanoethyl) aniline, N, N-bis- (ss- cyano-ethyl) aniline, N-ethyl N- (ss-hydroxyethyl) aniline, N, N-bis (ss-hydroxyethyl) aniline, N-ethyl N- (ss-acetoxyethyl) aniline, N, N- bis- (ss-acetoxyethyl) aniline, N- (p-cyanoethyl) N- (ss-acetoxy- ethyl) aniline, N- (ss-cyanoethyl) N- (P-hydroxyethyl) aniline, N-ethyl N - (ss-carbethoxyethyl) aniline, N, N-bis- (P-carbethoxy-ethyl) aniline,
N- (ss-cyanoethyl) N- (ss-carbethoxyethyl) aniline, N- (ss-acetoxyethyl) N- (ss-carbethoxyethyl) aniline, N- (ss-cyano-ethyl) N- (P-methoxyethyl) ) aniline, N- (ss-ethoxyethyl) N- (ss- carbethoxyethyl) aniline, N-ethyl N- (ss-chloroethyl) aniline, N-propyl N- (2-acetyl ethyl) aniline, N- butyl N- (P, y-dihydroxy-propyl) aniline, N-ethyl N- (P, y-diacetoxypropyl) aniline,
N-ethyl N- (ss-cyanoethyl) metatoluidine, N, N-bis- (P-cyanoethyl) metatoluidine,
N-ethyl N- (ss-acetoxyethyl) metatoluidine, N- (p-cyanoethyl) N- (ss-acetoxyethyl) metatoluidine,
N-ethyl N- (ss-carbethoxyethyl) metatoluidine, N, N-bis (ss-acetoxyethyl) metatoluidine, N, N-bis- (ss-carbethoxyethyl) - metatoluidine, N-ethyl N- (ss-carbethoxyethyl ) metachloraniline, N-ethyl N- (ss-acetoxyethyl) metachloraniline, N-ethyl N-cyanoethylmetachloraniline, N, N-bis- (ss-acetoxyethyl) - acetylamino-3 aniline, N, N-bis- ( ss-carbethoxyethyl) acetyl-3-amino aniline, N, N-bis- (ss-acetoxyethyl) 2-methoxy-5-acetylamino-aniline,
N-ethyl N-phenyl-2-amino-succinic acid dimethyl ester, N-ethyl N- (2-acetoxy-3-chloro-propyl) aniline.
In the finely divided state, the new dyes are very suitable for coloring textiles, such as fibers, yarns, floss, fabrics and knits, based on linear polyesters and cellulose triacetate. Some of them are also very suitable for coloring textiles based on acetylcellulose (2 1/2 acetate) and polyamides.
Certain dyes of formula (I) are suitable for the bulk dyeing of varnishes, oils, synthetic resins and synthetic fibers spun from their solutions in organic solvents.
In addition, many of the compounds of formula (I) are particularly advantageous on account of their solubility in chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene, which makes it possible to apply them in a solvent medium to the polyester fibers.
These new dyes have a good affinity for the aforementioned fibers which they color in solid shades in the light, in combustion gases and in wet tests. They exhibit, in particular, a remarkable fastness to sublimation and are, in this respect, markedly superior to the related dyes described in French Patent No. 1464491 of January 19, 1966. It was surprising to find that this improvement in the fastness to sublimation does not come at the expense of affinity.
The following examples, in which the parts indicated are by weight, illustrate the invention without limiting it.
Example 1:
Into a mixture of 51 parts of acetic acid and 9 parts of propionic acid are poured with stirring and maintaining the temperature at 5 ° C, 48 parts of nitrosylsulfuric acid containing 2 parts of nitrogenous anhydride. the mixture maintained at 5 ° C, 14 parts of placid ss-acetoxyethyl ester of 2-amino benzothiazolecarboxylic-6, then a mixture of 42.5 parts of acetic acid and 7.5 parts of propionic acid and finally, after 3 h at 0-5 "C, 2 parts urea.
The clear solution of the diazo derivative thus obtained is then introduced little by little into a mixture of 10.3 parts of N-ethyl N-cyanoethylmetatoluidine and 100 parts of acetic acid, while maintaining the temperature at 0-5 "C by addition 300 parts of a 25% sodium acetate solution are then added, stirred for 2 h, filtered, washed until neutral with water and the dye mixed with a dispersant. It dyes polyester fibers a very strong red shade, especially at sublimation.
The 2-amino benzothiazolecarboxylic acid ss-acetoxyethyl ester used in this example can be prepared as follows:
220 parts of ss-acetoxyethyl ester of p-amino benzoic acid and 333 parts of ammonium thiocyanate are suspended in 1000 parts of acetic acid. Cooled to 15 ° C., then gradually added over 2 h, without exceeding 15 ° C., a solution of 176 parts of bromine in 300 parts of acetic acid.
The mixture is left stirring for 1 h at 15 ° C., then left to stand overnight and the mixture is poured into 2500 parts of water containing 15 parts of hydrochloric acid at 19 B. The mixture is then heated to 95 ° C., filtered at 95. C, neutralizes the cooled filtrate by adding 700 parts of sodium carbonate, filter again, wash the precipitate with 2000 parts of water, drain and dry at 60 C. In this way 215 parts of ss-acetoxyethyl ester of 1 are obtained. 2-amino-6-benzothiazolecarboxylic acid. M.p. = 191-192 C.
