The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3-hydroxyquinophthalone compounds which are substituted in the 4-position and which are extremely suitable for dyeing and printing textile material which consists of acrylonitrile polymers or acrylonitrile copolymers or contains such.
The new basic quinophthalone compounds free of sulfonic acid groups correspond to the formula
EMI1.1
wherein X is -S-, -S02-, -0- or
EMI1.2
Y is the direct bond or an optionally substituted divalent hydrocarbon radical which can be interrupted by Hefter4 atoms, alk is an optionally substituted alkylene radical and Rl and R2 are each a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, the aromatic rings B and / or D are further substituted and the radicals R 1 and R 2 together with the adjacent N atom can form a saturated or partially saturated heterocycle and R stands for a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical.
The compounds of the formula (I) can be obtained by using a compound of the formula
EMI1.3
wherein A is the acid residue of an ester with an amine of the formula

oxidized.
The new compounds are also used for dyeing or printing synthetic polyamides or synthetic polyesters which have been modified by acidic groups.
Such polyamides are known, for example, from Belgian patent specification 706 104. The corresponding polyesters are known from US patents 3,018,272 or 3,379,723.
It is generally particularly advantageous to dye in an aqueous, neutral or acidic medium at temperatures of 60-100 ° C. or at temperatures above 100 ° C. under pressure.
In this way, level colorations are obtained even without the use of retarders.
Mixed fabrics which contain a proportion of polyacrylonitrile fibers can also be dyed very well. Those compounds which have good solubility in organic solvents are also suitable for coloring natural plastic compositions or dissolved or undissolved plastic or natural resin compositions. It has been shown that mixtures of two or more of the new compounds or mixtures with other cationic dyes can also advantageously be used; d. H. the connections can be easily combined. They are also used to color plastic masses or leather or to color paper.
In particular, on acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers, but also on other substrates, level dyeings with good lightfastness and good wetfastnesses are obtained.
The new compounds can be converted into coloring preparations. The processing z. B. in stable liquid or solid dye preparations can be done in well known manner, for. B. by grinding or granulating or then dissolving in suitable solvents, optionally with the addition of an auxiliary, e.g. B. a stabilizer.
In each case, halogen is preferably to be understood as meaning chlorine, bromine or fluorine. Hydrocarbon radicals are, for example, optionally substituted alkyl, such as cycloalkyl radicals or optionally substituted aryl radicals, e.g. B. cyclohexyl, alkylcyclohexyl or phenyl radicals.
Alkyl radicals, e.g. B. straight-chain or branched alkyl radicals usually contain 1 to 12, or 1 to 6 and preferably 1, 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms. If these radicals are substituted, they contain in particular halogen atoms, hydroxyl or cyano groups or aryl radicals, such as, for example, phenyl radicals; In such cases, alkyl represents an aralkyl radical, e.g. B. a benzyl radical. Alkoxy radicals contain, for example, 1 to 6 and preferably 1, 2 or 3 carbon atoms.
Alkylene radicals can be straight-chain or branched and substituted, for example, by halogen atoms, hydroxyl or cyano groups; they can be 1 to 6 and preferably
Contain 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
Divalent radicals can e.g. B. optionally substituted hydrocarbon radicals, such as substituted or unsubstituted alkylene or alkenylene radicals, phenylene or cyclohexylene radicals, it being possible in general for the alkylene radicals to be interrupted by heteroatoms such as oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atoms. Divalent radicals can also have the - S02-, -S-, -0- or
EMI2.1
Be a group. R1 and R2 together with the adjacent N atom can form heterocycles, e.g. B. a pyrrolidone, piperidine, morpholine, aziridine or piperazine ring.
Preferred radicals A are those of the hydrohalic acids; A preferably represents chlorine or bromine. Further acid residues A are, for example, those of sulfuric acid, a sulfonic acid or hydrogen sulfide.
The rings B and / or D can be further substituted, in particular by non-water-solubilizing substituents, e.g. B. by halogen atoms, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyl, cyano, amino, trifluoroalkyl, trichloroalkyl or urethane groups, etc.
The reaction of a compound of the formula (II) with a compound of the formula (III) can be carried out by methods known per se; e.g. in an inert solvent, optionally with the addition of an alkaline compound and at elevated temperatures, optionally under pressure.
From the German Auslegeschrift 1 286 666 is u. a. the dye of the formula

known for coloring polyacrylonitrile. It is surprising that the compounds of the formula (I), likewise colored on polyacrylonitrile, have improved lightfastness.
In the following example, parts are parts by weight, percentages are percentages by weight; the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example 1
14.2 parts of 4- {2-hydroxyethylmercapto-3-3-hydroxyquinophthalone, prepared by reacting 4-bromo-3-hydroxyquinophthalone, with 2-mercaptoethanol in the presence of potassium carbonate and 2-ethoxyethanol, are dissolved in 280 parts of dry chlorobenzene solved at 800. With exclusion of atmospheric moisture, 5.2 parts of thionyl chloride are added dropwise to the yellow-orange mixture over a period of 2-3 hours. The mixture is then kept at 100-1200 for a further 4 hours until a thin-layer chromatogram shows that only traces of starting material are present in addition to 4- [2-chloroethylmercapto] -3-hydroxyquinophthalone. The mixture is then concentrated to dryness under vacuum, 16.2 parts of an orange-yellow, crystallized compound being obtained.
The present compound has the following formula
EMI2.3
These orange-yellow crystals are placed in a stirred autoclave together with 80 parts of ethanol and 6.0 parts of diethylamine. The mixture is heated to 140 ° C. and left to stir at 140 ° C. for 18 hours. After cooling to 30-40 °, the paste is filtered, washed first with alcohol, then with water and finally again with alcohol. After drying, an orange-yellow, crystalline powder is obtained.
The dye has the formula
