The invention relates to a process for the preparation of new 1H-imidazo [4,5-b] - or - [4,5-c] pyridine derivatives of the formula I (see formula sheet), in which X is nitrogen and Y is a methylidyne group or vice versa X is a methylidyn group and Y is nitrogen, R1 is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine or a lower alkyl group and R2 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, but when X is nitrogen, R2 is always hydrogen, and when Y is nitrogen R1 and R2 do not simultaneously represent hydrogen, and their acid addition salts.
According to the invention, the compounds of the formula 1 are obtained by reducing compounds of the formula II in which X, Y, R1 and R2 are as defined above.
For example, the process according to the invention can be carried out by treating a compound of the formula II in a solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions, e.g. slurried in a lower alcohol such as isopropanol and then a reducing agent, e.g. Sodium borohydride is added. After the reaction has ended, the reaction product can be isolated from the reaction mixture by methods known per se and, if necessary, purified.
The compounds of the formula I can be converted into their acid addition salts and vice versa.
The lower alliyl groups symbolized by R 1 and R 2 have 1 to 4 carbon atoms and are in particular the methyl group. The lower alkyl groups represented by R3 have 1 to 4 carbon atoms and are in particular the ethyl group.
The compounds of the formula II required as starting materials can be obtained by oxidizing compounds of the formula III in which X, Y, R1 and R2 are as defined above. For example, the method can be carried out. by treating a benzyl compound of formula III in a solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions, e.g. dissolved in a cyclic ether such as dioxane, the solution with an oxidizing agent, e.g. mixed with manganese dioxide or selenium dioxide and can be reacted at various temperatures, the range of which extends from room temperature to the boiling point of the reaction mixture. The reaction product can be isolated and, if necessary, purified by methods known per se.
The compounds of the formula III required as starting materials can be obtained by adding a compound of the formula IV in which R ,. R2, X and Y have the above meaning. with an acid addition salt of a compound of the formula V in which R3 is a lower alkyl group.
For example, the process can be carried out by treating a compound of formula IV in a solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions, e.g. dissolved in a lower alcohol such as ethanol and treated with an acid addition salt of a compound of formula V, e.g. mixed with a hydrochloride. The reaction can be carried out at an elevated temperature, advantageously at the boiling point of the reaction mixture. After completion of the reaction, e.g. after about 8 hours, the reaction product can be isolated and, if necessary, purified by methods known per se.
If the production of the starting products is not described, these are known or can be produced by processes known per se or analogously to those described here or analogously to processes known per se.
The compounds of the formula I and their pharmacologically acceptable acid addition salts have valuable pharmacodynamic properties with low toxicity and can therefore be used as medicaments. They exert an antiviral activity, as demonstrated by studies in plaque reduction tests using various
Virus shows. This antiviral effectiveness is shown by an inhibition of growth, which was found at a concentration of about 20 to 100 y / ml. Therefore, the inventive substances can be used as an agent against
Viral infections are used.
The compounds of the formula I and, if appropriate, their water-soluble, physiologically tolerable salts, alone or in suitable medicinal forms together with inorganic or organic, pharmacologically inert adjuvants, can be administered as medicaments. For example, they are used as a component of capsules which contain a suspension with an active ingredient content of approx. 5 to 30%.
In the following examples, which explain the invention in greater detail but are not intended to limit its scope in any way, all temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.

Sodium chloride-saturated water was added to the reaction mixture, the mixture was shaken out repeatedly with ethyl acetate, the combined extracts were dried with sodium sulfate and the ethyl acetate solution was evaporated in vacuo. After recrystallization from acetone / hexane, the title compound is obtained with a melting point.
