Basic dyes having formula (I):- (where A is or B is opt. substd. alkyl, R7 is opt. substd. alkyl; R9 is CN; R10 is H; R11 is NO2; R12 is H, R13 is H; R14 is H or alkyl; R15 is H, R17 is H, R18 is H and Y is opt. substd. alkylene, esp. -C2H4- or -CH2-CHMe-, are prepd. by coupling 1 mole of a diazo cpd. of 2-amino-5-nitro-benzonitrile-(1) with 1 mole of coupling component (III): They are useful for dyeing and printing (i) shaped articles esp. fibres and filaments of polymers contg. >80% acrylonitrile e.g. polyacrylontrile and modified acrylics, or their blends; (ii) acid gp. modified polyester or polyolefine fibres also bulk dyeing acrylonitrile polymers, oils, varnishes, esp. tannin- mordanted cotton, wool, silk, opt. regenerated cellulose, synthetic polyamides, leather and paper in any stage of mfr.
