Abstract

1,269,627. Dyeing with polymer dyes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968 (2)], Nos. 18116/68 and 18117/68. Heading D1B. [Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C4] Polymeric materials are dyed by treating with a solution or suspension of an azo dyestuff of formula: in which A is the residue of a diazotisable aromatic amine A-NH 2 , E is a coupling component of the phenol, naphthol, reactive α-methylene or other or para coupling arylamine type, Z is a linking group of the class obtained by reacting an alcoholic hydroxyl, primary or secondary amino or carbonyl group attached to the residue of the azo dyestuff with a group reactive with a hydroxyl, primary or secondary amino or carbonyl group attached to Y or X, Y is an alkylene group n is 0 or 1 X is a group of formula: in which R 1 R 2 and R 3 independantly represent hydrogen or a methyl group and simultaneously or subsequently with a polymerisation initiator. Preferably Z is -COO-, -OCO-, or -NRCO in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, heterocyclic or aralkyl group and Y is an ethylene group. Substrates dyed include cotton, cellulose acetate, wool, silk, polyurethane, nylon 6 and 66 modified polyacrylonitrile aromatic polyesters and leather. The polymerisation initiator is used preferably as 1-500% by weight of the dyestuff and conventional carriers may be added when dyeing hydrophobic textiles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,046,751.
