Rest enthalten, kommen in Frage Triphenylphosphit, Tri-p toluyl-phosphit, Trisnonylphenylphosphit, Didecylphenylphos phit.
Frage: Triphenylphosphin, Tri-p-toluylphosphin, Diphenyl methyl- phosphin, Diphenyl-äthyl- phosphin, Diphenyl-propyl phosphin, Dimethyl-phenyl- phosphin, Diäthyl-phenyl phosphin, Dipropyl- phenyl-phosphin, Divinyl-phenyl phosphin, Divinyl-p- methoxyphenyl-phosphin, Divinyl-p bromphenyl- phosphin, Divinyl-p- toluyl- phosphin, Diallyl phenyl-phosphin, Diallyl-p-methoxyphenyl-phosphin,
Diallyl-p- bromphenyl-phosphin, Diallyl-p-toluyl- phosphin.
tert.-Butylperbenzoat, Dicumylperoxid, Benzoylperoxid,
Lauroylperoxid, Methyläthylketonperoxid, Methylisobutyl ketonperoxid, Cyclohexanonperoxid, Azobisisobutyronitril.
Eine Mitverwendung von geringen Mengen üblicher
Beschleuniger, beispielsweise Kobaltoctoat, Kobaltnaphthenat,

The German Awiegeschriften 1,297,269 and 1,694,149 describe molding and coating compositions made from conventionally stabilized mixtures of unsaturated polyesters and polymerizable, monomeric compounds, the benzoin ethers and metal accelerators or benzoin ethers of secondary alcohols and, optionally, a peroxide catalyst or / and acidic esters the phosphoric acid and / or a metal accelerator.
The resulting systems can be modified by exposure to high-energy radiation from e.g. High-pressure mercury lamps harden as well as by the action of less energetic rays, e.g. under the superactinic radiation of fluorescent lamps that have a fluorescent coating that emits blue-violet light and rays in the longer-wave UV, e.g. in the range 3000 to 5800 A.
When using these Binzoidither as sensitizers, the photopolymerization of mixtures of unsaturated polyesters with unsaturated vinyl compounds, such as styrene, is possible in a relatively short time at room temperature.
A benzoin ether content of around 2% by weight, based on the mixture, is necessary in order to achieve sufficient reactivity. However, after exposure to high-pressure mercury lamps, these mixtures show an intense yellow color which does not completely disappear even after several days.
In the Italian patent 839 021 unsaturated polyester preparations curable by radiation are already given, which an unsaturated polyester with a hydroxyl number of 55 to 75, a polymerizable monomer, a stabilizer combination of 200 to 800 parts per million of an alkyl phosphite or aryl phosphite and 10 to 50 parts per Containing a million of a copper salt of organic acids; 0.1 to 5% benzoin or its alkyl ethers are used as photoinitiators for this purpose. The curing takes place by irradiation with light with a wavelength of 2500 to 4000 A.
These polyester preparations show improved dark storage stability, but they do not have a shortened curing time compared to comparable polyester preparations with different stabilization.
The object of the present invention is to jointly improve unsaturated polyester preparations curable by UV irradiation in at least three directions compared to the prior art, namely:
1) To improve the dark storage stability at room temperature and at elevated temperatures up to about 60 ° C. quite significantly.
2) To increase the rate of polymerization very significantly so that the irradiation time can be shortened accordingly.
3) To reduce the discoloration of the cured polyester preparation by lowering the concentration of sensitizers used with a relatively short exposure time.
4) When using air-drying polyester resins that contain a proportion of ss, y-unsaturated ether alcohols, a tack-free surface can be achieved during light curing.
These objects are achieved in a surprising manner in that benzoin ethers are contained in the unsaturated polyester preparation in certain combinations with compounds of trivalent phosphorus.
The invention relates to preparations curable by UV irradiation based on stabilized mixtures of unsaturated polyester resins which have been obtained by polycondensation from unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and / or their anhydrides with polyhydric alcohols used in a molar excess, and polymerizable, monomeric compounds and photoinitiators, characterized in that an overall combination is contained as the photoinitiator, consisting of: (a) 0.14% by weight of benzoin ethers of primary and / or secondary alcohols and (b) at least two different compounds of trivalent phosphorus, consisting of:
: (b) 0.520% by weight of organic esters of phosphorous acid with the general formula
EMI1.1
where R1, R2 and R3 can be the same or different and represent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic radicals - at least one of the radicals R1, R2 or R3 must be an aromatic radical - and (b '? 0.05-2 % By weight of organic derivatives of phosphine with the general formula
EMI1.2
where Rt, R2 and R3 can be the same or different and aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic,
represent araliphatic or heterocyclic radicals - where at least one of the radicals R1, R2 or R3 must be an aromatic radical - and the percentages by weight refer to the total weight of unsaturated polyester resin and polymerizable monomers.
When using the overall combination, consisting of (a) and (b) ((B ') and (b')), a synergistic effect surprisingly occurs which causes extremely short polymerization times in the case of UV irradiation.
The extraordinarily high reactivity of the preparations according to the invention makes it possible, compared to the known preparations with comparable hardening times, to reduce the content of benzoin ethers considerably or, optionally, to considerably shorten the hardening times with comparable contents of benzoin ethers.
The high reactivity of the preparations according to the invention permits rapid hardening of thin layers, in particular also when exposed to ultraviolet and visible radiation, comparatively low-energy fluorescent lamps with an emission of about 3000 to 5800 A; this is particularly advantageous in the light-curing of coatings based on unsaturated polyester resins.
Unsaturated polyester resins are understood as meaning condensation products which are obtained by polycondensation from α, unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and / or their anhydrides with polyhydric alcohols used in a molar excess. The α, β-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids which can be used are, for example: maleic acid, maleic anhydride, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic and aconitic acids and halogenated acids such as, for example, chloromaleic acid.
Some of the α, β-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids can be converted in a manner known per se by saturated dicarboxylic acids, for example o-, iso- and terephthalic acid, tetra- and hexahydrophthalic acid, tetrachlorophthalic acid, hexachlorendomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic acid, endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic acid and sebacic acid and sebacic acid and sebacic acid Linseed oil and soybean oil fatty acids or their anhydrides are exchanged.
Polyhydric alcohols are preferably dihydric alcohols, for example ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, 1,4-butanediol, diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and their higher homologues, neopentyl glycol, 2,2,4-trimethylpentanediol-1 , 3, pentyl glycol, alkoxylated bisphenols, hydrogenated bisphenol, dimethylolcyclohexane. However, trihydric and polyhydric alcohols, such as glycerol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane and pentaerythritol, can also be used proportionally.
The unsaturated polyester resins built up on these raw materials are known to have the disadvantage that they form a sticky surface on curing in the presence of atmospheric oxygen. If the air-drying properties of the polyester resin are important, ss, y-unsaturated ether alcohols must be used in exchange for the polyhydric alcohols. Examples include: the monoallyl and monomethallyl ethers of ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3 and 1,4-butanediol, glycerol, trimethylolpropane and -ethane and pentaerythritol as well as diallyl ether and the corresponding methallyl ethers of glycerol and trimethylolethane, propane and pentaerythritol.
Particularly useful here are γ-unsaturated ether alcohols which contain at least two γ-unsaturated ether groups, such as trimethylolpropane diallyl ether, trimethylol ethereallyl ether and pentaervthritol triallyl ether.
Examples of suitable copolymerizable vinyl compounds are: styrene, vinyl toluene, divinylbenzene, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and its higher homologues, diethylene glycol dimethylene glycol. Examples of allyl compounds that can be used are: diallyl phthalate, diallyl maleate, diallyl fumarate, triallyl cyanurate and also vinyl acetate and vinyl propionate.
The molding, impregnating and coating compositions are stabilized in the known amounts by adding conventional inhibitors, for example p-benzoquinone, 2,5-di-tert-butylbenzoquinone, hydroquinone, tert-butylpyrocatechol, toluylhydroquinone.
Examples of the sensitizers to be used (a) in the overall combination (a) and (b) ((b) and (b ")) are the benzoin ethers of the following alcohols: methanol, ethanol, propanol-1, propanol-2, butanol-2 , 2-pentanol, cyclohexanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, 2-methyl-1-pentanol, 2-methylpentanol-3, primary and secondary octanol, 2-ethylhexanol, n nonanol, n-dodecanol, 6 -Dodecanol, lauryl, myristyl, stearyl alcohol, 2-chloro-1-propanol, 3-bromo-1-propanol, 2,2 dichloro-1-propanol, 1-chloro-2-propanol, abietyl alcohol and tetrahydroabietyl alcohol Ethereally bound monoalcohols are those compounds which have primary alcoholic hydroxyl groups, but the monoalcohols with secondary and tertiary alcoholic hydroxyl groups are also useful.
In addition to the saturated alcohols, the unsaturated alcohols are also suitable.
The following may be mentioned by way of example:, γ-unsaturated alcohols, such as allyl alcohol, methallyl alcohol, ethallyl alcohol, chlorallyl alcohol, crotyl alcohol, phenylallyl alcohol, methyl vinyl carbinol, and also unsaturated fatty alcohols obtained by selective hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids.
The preparations according to the invention contain the benzoin ethers mentioned (a) individually or mixed with one another in amounts of 0.1 to about 4% by weight, preferably 0.1 to about 1.5% by weight, in combination with compounds of trivalent phosphorus ( b) ((b ') and (b ")). As an ester of phosphorous acid (b9, the at least one aromatic
Containing the remainder, triphenyl phosphite, tri-p toluyl phosphite, trisnonylphenyl phosphite, didecylphenyl phosphite are suitable.
Organic derivatives of phosphine (b ") which contain at least one aromatic radical include, for example
Question: triphenylphosphine, tri-p-toluylphosphine, diphenylmethylphosphine, diphenylethylphosphine, diphenylpropylphosphine, dimethylphenylphosphine, diethylphenylphosphine, dipropylphenylphosphine, divinylphenylphosphine, divinylphosphine p-methoxyphenyl-phosphine, divinyl-p-bromophenyl-phosphine, divinyl-p-toluyl-phosphine, diallyl phenyl-phosphine, diallyl-p-methoxyphenyl-phosphine,
Diallyl-p-bromophenyl-phosphine, diallyl-p-toluyl-phosphine.
The phosphorous acid esters (b ') are in amounts of
0.6 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of unsaturated polyester resin and polymerizable
Monomers, preferably 0.6 to 2% by weight, mixed with the benzoin ethers (a) and phosphines (b ") mentioned.
The phosphines mentioned (b ") are in amounts from 0.05 to
2 wt% based on the total weight of unsaturated
Polyester resin and polymerizable monomers, im
Mixture with the benzoin ethers mentioned (a) and esters of phosphorous acid (b ').
The most preferred overall combinations consist of:
Benzoin ethers of primary and / or secondary alcohols (a),
Esters of phosphorous acid (b ') which contain only aromatic radicals, such as triphenyl and / or tri-p-toluyl phosphite, and organic derivatives of phosphine (b ") which contain only aromatic radicals, such as triphenyl and / or tri-p-toluylphosphine.
If necessary, the use of customary
Polymerization initiators in amounts of 0.1 to about 2% by weight, based on the total weight of unsaturated
Polyester resin and polymerizable monomers, be advantageous. Suitable polymerization initiators are e.g.
tert-butyl perbenzoate, dicumyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide,
Lauroyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile.
It is common to use small amounts as well
Accelerators, for example cobalt octoate, cobalt naphthenate,
Zirconium naphthenate, dimethylaniline, acetoacetic acid ester are also possible.
The addition of UV absorbers as light stabilizers to the cured preparations, such as derivatives of oxybenzo phenone, salicylic acid esters, o-oxyphenylbenzotriazole, in the usual amounts between 0.01 and 0.4% by weight does not result in any appreciable or acceptable amounts Delay of the photo, polymerization, although the absorption of the UV absorber in the
Range of the long wave required for photopolymerization
UV radiation lies.
These molding, impregnating and coating compositions according to the invention have, in comparison to the known compositions, excellent darkness in certain combinations

The molding, impregnating and coating compositions according to the invention are outstandingly suitable for producing high-quality coatings on a wide variety of substrates, such as wood, wood-like materials, metals, and for producing fiber-reinforced plastic parts. When used in the paint sector, the preparations can be used unpigmented or filled or pigmented.
In the unpigmented procedure for producing closed-pore or open-pore wood polishing lacquers, a combined curing process is advantageous. According to this process, the coating is allowed to pregelatinize under the action of comparatively low-energy fluorescent lamps, a uniform paraffin or wax skin being formed when using paraffin-containing polyester resins. The final curing can either be done by exposure to high-pressure mercury lamps or
Heat supply or take place by a conventional curing process, in the latter case the preparations according to the invention additionally contain a customary accelerator, such as cobalt octoate, and are applied to a substrate that has already been coated with an active primer (Hauck, KH, Zeitschrift Hok, 10.2831; (Feb. 1956)) is provided.
In the filled or pigmented state, the preparations according to the invention are outstandingly suitable for the production of fillers, in particular so-called roller fillers, which are used to smooth rough, porous substrates such as chipboard. Only those products are naturally suitable as fillers for the production of such leveling compounds, which have sufficient UV permeability.
Suitable fillers are, for example, asbestos, talc, calcium sulphate, mica, light spar (calcium sulphate), barium sulphate and highly dispersed silicic acid.
Find soluble dyes use.
For the production of fiber-reinforced, in particular glass fiber-reinforced, plastic parts using the preparations according to the invention, only those processes are naturally suitable which allow irradiation after the shaping or the lamination process. Examples include: the hand lay-up process, the lining of containers and pipes as well as the double-sided coating of chipboard and blockboard or plywood with glass fiber-reinforced laminates for the production of so-called container panels. All customary glass fiber products such as mats, rowings and fabric qualities are suitable as reinforcement materials.
After the lamination process has been carried out, which is not tied to a limited processing time or pot life as is usually the case, the laminate can be cured for a long period of time using low-energy UV radiation or with the aid of high-pressure mercury lamps.
Due to their very short curing time, the products are suitable for an efficient processing method tailored to the assembly line method.

Further evidence of the technical progress achieved, test series A (working method according to the invention)
A laminate was produced from the coating compound C with a proportion of 40% by weight glass silk fabric and was light-polymerized. The flexural strength, tensile strength and impact strength of the light-polymerized laminate obtained were determined. The following values were obtained:
Flexural strength DIN 53 452 3150 Kp / cm2
Tensile strength DIN 53 455 2920 Kp / cm2
Impact strength DIN 53 453 95 Kpcm / cm2 test series B (method not belonging to the state of the art)
Another light-polymerized comparative laminate was produced in an analogous manner, but in which triphenyl phosphite and triphenyl phosphine were omitted from coating compound C.
The following measured values were obtained:
Flexural strength DIN 53 452 3200 Kp / cm2
Tensile strength DIN 53 455 1850 Kp / cm2
Impact strength DIN 53 453 87 Kpcm / cm2 test series C (working method according to the state of the art)
In a third comparison, coating compound C was used in an analogous manner to produce a laminate, but without the addition of benzoin ethyl ether, triphenyl phosphite and triphenyl phosphine.
Coating compound C was cured by adding 2 parts by weight of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (50%) and 0.8 parts by weight of cobalt accelerator (1%). After cold curing, the laminate obtained was tested in the same way and the following measured values were obtained:
Flexural strength DIN 53 452 2525 Kp / cm2
Tensile strength DIN 53 455 1290 Kp / cm2
Impact strength DIN 53 453 110 Kpcm / cm2
In addition, in order to obtain comparable values, all test plates made of the laminate were tempered for 2 hours at 60 ° C., whereby they were homogenized. All measured values are mean values from measurements on 10 test pieces each.
These measured values show that the usual classic cold curing with peroxide and accelerators provides low flexural strength and low tensile strength and relatively high impact strength. The high value for the impact strength is probably due to the fact that the residual monomer content in this laminate is usually higher than in the case of unsaturated polyester cured by UV radiation.
It can be clearly seen that the light curing, whereby a benzoin ether alone (according to test series B) was used as photoinitiator, compared to the laminate obtained by cold curing (according to test series C) delivers considerably improved values in terms of flexural strength and impact strength, while tensile strength is somewhat degraded.
In addition, these investigations show that the light-polymerized laminates, in which the total combination of benzoin ethyl ether, triphenyl phosphite and triphenyl phosphine (according to test series A) was used as photoinitiator, achieved very good flexural strengths and the highest tensile strength. The impact strength is also markedly improved compared with the light-polymerized polyester, which contains only benzoin ethyl ether alone as the photoinitiator.
The comparative tests additionally show that unexpected improvements in various directions are achieved by the present invention in the light-polymerized laminate.
The coating compound C used in the above test series was produced as follows.
Coating Compound C
100 parts by weight of a polymerizable mixture consisting of 67 parts by weight of polyester resin (prepared from 2 moles of maleic anhydride, 1 mole of phthalic anhydride and 3.08 moles of 1,2,2-propanediol) and 33 parts by weight of styrene, stabilized with 0.014% by weight .-% hydroquinone, a viscosity of 1100 cP at 20 "C and an acid number of 30, are diluted with a further 5 parts by weight of styrene to produce an impregnating compound. 100 parts by weight of the mixture listed above are used to produce a photopolymerizable mixture 1.5 parts by weight of benzoin ethyl ether, 0.6 part by weight of triphenyl phosphite and 0.2 part by weight of triphenylphosphine are mixed in.
In another test series D and E, test bars were made from a polyester resin (without glass fiber reinforcement).
To produce test plates, 100 parts by weight of a polymerizable mixture consisting of 67 parts by weight of polyester resin (prepared from 2 moles of maleic anhydride, 1 mole of phthalic anhydride and 3.08 moles of 1,2-propanediol) and 33 parts by weight of styrene, stabilized with 0.014% by weight hydroquinone, a viscosity of approx. 1100 cP at 20 "C. and an acid number of 30.
Test series D Test plate 1
To produce the 1 cm thick test plate 1, the aforementioned polymerizable mixture was provided with 2 parts by weight of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (50%) and 0.3 part by weight of cobalt octoate (1% by weight Co content). The mixture was placed between two aluminum plates with a release agent on the surface, cured and placed in a drying cabinet for 120 minutes
Heated at 100 "C. Test rods measuring 120 × 15 × 10 mm were cut out of this plate.
Test series E
Test plate 2
To produce the 1 cm thick test plate 2, the above-mentioned polymerizable mixture was 1.5 wt.
Parts of benzoin ethyl ether, 0.6 parts by weight of triphenyl phosphite and 0.2 parts by weight of triphenylphosphine are added and exposed for one hour to the midday sun under a cloudless sky between two window panes (3 mm thick), then additionally
15 minutes on each side in the UV light curing channel
Post-hardened high-pressure mercury vapor lamps.
Test bars of the aforementioned dimensions were cut from this plate.
The measured mechanical values are shown in the following table.
Flexural strength according to DIN Modulus of elasticity DIN Impact strength DIN 53452 Kp / cm2 53 457 Kp / cm2 53 453 Kp / cm2 Test rods from test panel 1 717 27921 3.2 Test series D Test rods from test panel 2 839 30253 5.1 Test series E
These investigations show that the light-polymerized polyester plastic obtained according to the present invention (according to test series E) has significantly improved values in terms of flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and impact strength compared to a polymerized polyester plastic obtained by cold curing (according to test series D). These results also represent unforeseeable surprising effects.
The above comparative investigations also suggest that the preparations curable by UV irradiation produce similarly advantageous effects when used for the production of lacquers, fillers and other coatings.
