EMI1.1

Process for the preparation of polycyclic quinoid compounds
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of polycyclic quinoid compounds by adding a 1,3-diene to the 2,3-position of a dienophilic compound of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein the core A is optionally substituted, hydrolyzing with alkali and dehydrating with an oxidizing agent.
The Diels-Alder addition of a 1,3-diene with a compound of the formula (I) is carried out according to the information in Swiss Patent No. 470 334 and gives products of the formula
EMI1.2
in which Z denotes the atoms necessary for the formation of an optionally substituted, unsaturated mononuclear or polynuclear, carbocyclic, preferably cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic ring, and the nucleus A is optionally substituted.
The core A can be used as a substituent, for. B. carry halogen atoms (chlorine, bromine, fluorine), low molecular weight, optionally substituted alkyl groups (methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, isoamyl, n-amyl, ss-hydroxyethyl), hydroxy, alkoxy or carboxy groups.
The hydrolysis is expediently carried out in aqueous, aqueous-organic, e.g. B. aqueous-alcoholic, or in alcoholic medium at elevated temperature, z. B. between 65 and 1500 C, preferably between 80 and 1000 C, optionally under pressure, performed. The progress of the hydrolysis can easily be followed by determining the amount of chlorine split off. The alcohols are preferably the low molecular weight with 1 to about 8 carbon atoms, such as methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, sec-butyl, n-amyl , iso-amyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl alcohol, and also the ether alcohols, e.g.
B. 2-methoxy-, 2-ethoxy- or 2-n-butoxyethanol, l-methoxy- or l-ethoxy-propanol-2- 2- (2'-methoxy) - ethoxy-ethanol, 2- (2'- Ethoxy) ethoxyethanol, 2- (2'-n-butoxy) ethoxyethanol, 3-methoxypropanol- 1, 3-methoxybutanol-1, and the polyols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,2- or 2,3-butylene glycol , Di- or triethylene glycol, di- or tripropylene glycol or glycerine can be considered. Ethers such as diisopropyl or di-n-propyl ether or dioxane are also suitable. Substances whose aqueous 1 S solution has a pH of at least 9 are advantageously used as alkali, e.g. B.
Alkali metal carbonates, hydroxides or silicates, also tertiary phosphates of the alkali metals, borax, etc., lithium and preferably potassium or sodium being suitable as alkali metals. Preferred alkalis are potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, which are soluble not only in water but also in several alcohols. The alkaline earth metal hydroxides (calcium, strontium and barium hydroxide) can also be used, but their use is associated with the difficulty that they form insoluble carbonates with the carbonic acid in the air, which may be obtained from the end product by treatment with salt, saltpeter or Acetic acid must be removed.
The dehydrogenation is advantageously carried out in the same medium and at the same temperature as the hydrolysis.
As oxidizing agents are primarily those which are effective in alkaline solution, z. B. air, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, persalts (percarbonate or perborate), hypochlorites (sodium hypochlorite, potassium hypochlorite, chlorinated lime), hypobromites, chlorites (NaClO2), also permanganates (KMn 04), ferric salts and also nitro compounds (3-nitro-benzenesulfonic acid sodium, 3- or 4-nitrobenzenecarboxylic acid sodium). While the dehydrogenation can be carried out at the same time as the hydrolysis with most oxidizing agents, the dehydrogenation with a nitro compound must only be carried out after the chlorine atom has been split off, otherwise the amino compound formed by reducing the nitro compound causes an amination by replacing the chlorine atom with an amine residue.
After the end of the dehydrogenation, the polycyclic quinoid compounds obtained can be isolated by filtration, acidification and filtration, evaporation of the organic reaction medium, optionally under reduced pressure, steam distillation of the organic solvent, precipitation with a suitable agent.
The polycyclic quinoid compounds obtained can be used as intermediates for the preparation of amino dyes by chlorination and reaction with ammonia or an amine which reacts with the Cl atom; such amino compounds are suitable as disperse dyes. If the polycyclic quinoid compound has been reacted with arylamines after the chlorination, these can be sulfonated and water-soluble dyes for natural and synthetic polyamide fibers can be obtained (cf. Ja. Posstowski and L. N. Goldyrew, Central-Blatt 1942, page 1875).
