A method of manufacturing a fabric by placing a weft in a warp web,
apparatus for carrying out this method and fabric resulting therefrom
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a fabric by placing in a ply of warp elements of a mono- or multi-ply weft, the picks of which are introduced in a spaced manner in order to be able to give the web a some cohesion.
This can be useful when this web is to be subjected to a subsequent treatment, for example a heat treatment.
The method which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that at least one toothed element is used to periodically raise and lower predetermined chain elements according to a sequence allowing the passage of the picks over at least part of the chain. the width of the tablecloth.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out this method. This apparatus is characterized by the fact that it comprises a drive device capable of longitudinally moving a web of chain elements, at least one toothed element capable of periodically raising and lowering predetermined chain elements of the web. , and means for actuating said toothed member so that the predetermined chain members are raised and lowered in a sequence which allows the passage of picks spaced over at least part of the width of the web.
The invention also relates to a fabric resulting from said process.
The picks forming the weft of this fabric can be set up so as to be either alone or several within the same crowd and the crowds which are formed for the setting up of this weft are formed in a generally random manner. from place to place along the web formed by the chain elements.
By warp element is meant not only a filiform element, such as a yarn, but also any elongated element, filamentous or fibrous, or any assembly of such elements, in particular a sliver. In one case, these chain elements consist of a wick, spread out in width, made of continuous artificial or synthetic filaments, in particular made of polyacrylonitrile filaments. For some applications, which will be described in more detail below, the weft must be reduced to the minimum necessary to hold the warp elements together: in this case, the picks are located at intervals of approximately 5 cm in a sliver. about last 10,000 in total.
A process used for the manufacture of such a fabric can comprise the following phases: - successive displacement of sections of a staple wick
these sections being spaced from each other
in the direction of the width of this wick, so
to gradually form in the latter a
transverse crowd; - insertion through this crowd, as you go
that it is formed and with the help of an insertion organ
able to keep it open, one pick; - withdrawal of this organ, so as to close the crowd
on this pick. We can optionally cut the weft
after the pick has been inserted or not: if you do not
not cut the weft, the insert member deposits, in
the same crowd, when he withdraws, a second pick.
An apparatus implementing this method may comprise a wheel having teeth delimited by a series of slots formed on its periphery, parallel to its axis, this wheel serving, when it is made to roll transversely on the wick, to form a shed. in a manner which is generally random, and a needle (or a similar member) arranged so as to accompany said wheel in its transverse movement while remaining adjacent thereto, and so as to be fed with weft, so that at the same time as the wheel forms the shed, the needle (or the like) enters it, keeping it open, deposits a pick therein and, when it withdraws, lets the shed close on the pick.
The description which follows relates to two particular embodiments, given by way of example, of the apparatus for implementing the method forming the subject of the invention, one of these embodiments being illustrated by the attached drawing in which:
fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view; and
fig. 2 shows in more detail, also in perspective, part of FIG. 1.
The embodiment shown in the drawing comprises a creel 1 carrying several coils 2, each of which is loaded with a cross mass 3 consisting of a strand of continuous filaments made of polyacrylonitrile or of another carbonaceous material. This wick can be, for example, in Courtelle (registered trademark) of 15,000 denier, of high resistance. Each of the wicks 4 coming from the crossed masses 3 passes over a common horizontal roller 5, under a common horizontal roller 6, then around an individual vertical roller 7. Leaving the rollers 7, the wicks 4 form a kind of web 10. The individual wicks are not as far apart, in reality, as it appears in the drawing: the intervals which are shown between the wicks are there only to make the operation of the apparatus easier to understand.
In fact, the individual strands are aligned side by side in contact with each other and constitute chain elements in this web.
These strands pass through a horizontal roll 11, pass under a horizontal roll 12, pass again through a horizontal roll 13, then pass towards a weaving mechanism 14 which they pass through in the direction of their length under the effect of drive means. not shown. The role of the weaving device 14 is to introduce into the web 10 the picks of a weft 15 (mono- or multifilament) so as to give the web 10 a cohesion allowing it to undergo more easily a subsequent treatment, by example a heat treatment.
The weaving mechanism 14 comprises a crenellated comb 16 (FIG. 2) carried by a support 17 which is arranged so as to describe, under the effect of means not shown, a vertical back-and-forth movement; this vertical back-and-forth movement causes periodic raising and lowering of some of the bits 4, those which are required to describe this periodic movement being predetermined; thus in the example shown, every second wick is moved in this way.
The weaving mechanism 14 further comprises a hollow needle 20 carried by a carriage 21 mounted on horizontal rails 22 on which the latter is called upon to describe a reciprocating movement. The carriage 21 carries a spool 23 loaded with a mass 24 of continuous wire of polyacrylonitrile or of another carbonaceous material; this thread is intended to constitute the picks of the weft 15. As can be seen from the drawing, this weft thread is threaded longitudinally through the needle 20.
In addition, the weaving mechanism 14 comprises an electromagnet device 25 which is placed near one of the selvages, the selvage 26, of the web 10 and which is provided with an armature 27 arranged so as to be able to pinch the part of the weft thread which is placed at the pro.
ximity of this one and which exits by the end of the needle.
The operation of the device is as follows. The front end of the weft thread begins by being threaded through the needle 20 until it protrudes out of the end opposite the carriage 21. Then the crenellated comb 16 is raised so as to lift, at a rate of one. on two, the wicks 4, which, during this time, move longitudinally; the needle 20 is then moved horizontally towards the electromagnet device 25, which has the effect of placing a pick 28 of the weft 15 above and below, respectively, some of the warp members, and that in a predetermined order, while they progress longitudinally. When said front end of the weft thread has reached the device 25, the pick 28 extends from the selvedge 30 of the web 10 to the selvage 26.
The frame 27 then descends, so as to clamp this anterior end, and the crenellated comb 16 is lowered. Then the needle 20 is withdrawn, that is to say moved in the direction of the selvage 30 of the web 10. After the needle 20 has traveled a certain distance in the direction of the selvage 30, the tension of the wicks 4 cause those which are close to the selvage 26 to rest on the weft thread and retain it preventing it from moving while the needle completes its withdrawal stroke.
The frame 27 is then raised.
When the needle 20 has been completely withdrawn from the wicks 4, the crenellated comb 16 rises and the needle 20 is moved again towards the device 25; the reinforcement 27 of the latter then descends to clamp the part of the weft thread which appears in front of it when the needle 20 reaches the device 25.
As will be appreciated, the needle 20 carries successive picks 28 of the weft 15 and its transverse back-and-forth movement has the effect of inserting these picks 28, which extend from selvedge to selvage. the other of the web 10, above or below predetermined chain elements while the latter move longitudinally. The initial elevation of the crenellated comb 16 allows the needle 20 to move towards the device 26; but the needle 20 is able to return to the selvage 30 when the crenellated comb 16 is lowered.
Periodic actuation of device 25 prevents any pick 28 which is placed in the forward direction of needle 20 from being displaced by any appreciable amount during the formation of the next pick. As will be appreciated, each of the picks 28 is inclined relative to the pick which is adjacent to it.
The loose weave which is thus obtained is sufficient to maintain, during the subsequent treatment, thermal or otherwise, the strands 4 assembled into a web.
Another particular embodiment will now be described, still by way of example. This does not apply to the manufacture of fancy fabrics, but to the manufacture of a laminate made of carbon fibers. As is known, it is possible to produce carbon fibers having a high tensile strength and to use these fibers for reinforcing metal or plastic materials. Carbon fibers can be obtained from polyacrylonitrile fibers by a series of batch treatments; but once produced, these fibers are extremely difficult to process subsequently, in particular when it comes to making a fibrous laminate endowed with cohesion, a form in which it is desirable to have them for certain applications where they are used as reinforcement.
Attention has therefore been focused on the means for producing, from polyacrylonitrile filaments, fibrous masses in the form of laminates. According to this other embodiment, a wick having
about 10,000 denier in total and 1.5 denier per filament until it reaches a width of about
10 cm; of this spread wick, an adequate length for the subsequent batch treatments alluded to above is fixed to a frame capable of sliding in guides such that the spread wick can be moved longitudinally under a bridge structure which , by its ends, rests itself on these guides and which stretches this frame transversely.
The bridge structure consists essentially of a frame intended to receive a reserve of weft, a tubular guide, two flat guides and a mechanism for placing the weft. This weft positioning mechanism consists mainly of a main body, a wheel and a needle. The main body is supported by the tubular guide, and most of the wheel is above the two flat guides and the rest between them. The latter are arranged so as to delimit a narrow slot which extends transversely with respect to the bridge part. The needle is hollow and one of its ends is adjacent to the lower part of the periphery of the wheel while its other end is arranged so as to be fed with weft thread. Needle length is a little over 10cm.
The wheel is specially formed to enable it to fulfill, in a generally random manner, a shed forming role by making it roll transversely on the spread wick. It has a diameter of the order of 7.5 cm and has, on its periphery, forty slits parallel to its axis. The periphery of this wheel is therefore crenellated and, compared to merlons, the crenellations are relatively narrow. Each merlon has a profile such that it protrudes slightly from the circumference, drawing a slight convexity. It was found that if the merlons are profiled according to this principle, the shed is formed between approximately equal numbers of chain elements.
The mechanism for setting up the weft can include several refinements, such as guide means arranged to travel the upper face of the flat guides, spring mountings for the wheel and retraction means for the latter. The weft yarn feed is usually provided from a spool supported at one end of the bridge structure and the yarn passes through a flexible tube of the length necessary to reach the entry end of the needle. . When using the apparatus, the weft thread is introduced into the needle and leaves it through the end which is adjacent to the wheel.
The weft positioning mechanism is then moved transversely to the spread wick, the wheel rolling on it. In doing so, the wheel produces a progressive shed in which the weft-carrying needle penetrates.
When the wheel leaves the edge away from the spread wick, the needle will have completely passed through the shed and will be used to keep it open. When the weft positioning mechanism returns, the needle withdraws from the shed, which closes by exerting a sufficient friction effect to hold a double pick of the weft in place. The wheel can be pulled back both during needle retraction and independently. If the callback is independent, it will spawn another crowd, but this has no effect. Then the spread wick advances by approximately 5 cm and the operation of placing the weft thread begins again. And so on. What has just been described constitutes the basic elements of an embodiment of the apparatus used for implementing the method which is the subject of the invention.
These basic elements can be incorporated
res both within a somewhat primitive manually operated device as within a more advanced installation capable of operating automatically
either in part or in whole. This installation can in particular comprise means automatically causing the intermittent advance of the wick and means ensuring the mechanism for placing the weft in its reciprocating movement transversely with respect to the wick.
It should be noted that the maximum value which can be admitted for the width of the bit depends on the length of the needle; for a wick which substantially exceeds the width of that which has just been described, it
is necessary to provide special means to support the needle. One can, for example, support it elastically by its rear end, so that it aligns itself with the crowd; it is also desirable that the lowered portions of the bit be supported by a suitable backing plate.
If it is desired to obtain a more compact or tight fabric, this can be shrunk after manufacture.
As already indicated, entire lengths of fabric made in the manner described can be subjected to the known batch treatments for converting acrylic filaments into carbon filaments and the end product obtained in this way lends itself well to applications relating to fabrics. objects of various shapes in which it is called upon to constitute a reinforcing material.
As noted above, the invention can be used simply for the manufacture of novel novelty fabrics for various purposes.
