The present invention relates to a waterproof watch case of non-circular shape, comprising a capsule containing the movement and an outer casing having means for fixing the case to a bracelet, in which case the capsule consists of a piece in dome-shaped in a transparent material, the upper part of which constitutes the glass, and of a bottom fixed to said dome-shaped piece.
The devices which have been proposed until now for ensuring the sealing of watch cases of non-circular shape are generally of relatively complicated construction and require numerous machining operations which are difficult to perform in series. However, watch cases of the type mentioned above are already known in which the sealed capsule is made of plastic and is closed by welding. In other cases, in particular in the part described by the disclosure of patent CH N 174134, the sealing of the capsule is obtained by gluing. This solution ensures good sealing whatever the shape of the case, but has the drawback that it is necessary to destroy the sealed capsule during an overhaul or repair of the watch.
The capsule must then be replaced, which complicates after-sales service. Circular boxes are also known which have a capsule and an outer case. The capsule is sealed and can be opened and closed at will. However, the sealing means do not include a sealing ring. but a frictional engagement of the glass wall on the peripheral edge of the bottom of the capsule. A ring presses the wall of the cap against the edge of the bottom. This ring is made of metal and engages notch in a groove in the side wall of the cap. Achieving a good seal by such means is only possible with circular boxes.
The problem of ensuring the tightness of an inner capsule while allowing its opening without destruction and by means of a sufficiently small size so that the capsule can be housed easily inside the envelope therefore has no effect. received no satisfactory solution so far in the case of boxes of non-circular shape, and the aim of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective solution to this problem.
For this purpose, the watch case according to the invention, of the kind mentioned at the beginning, is characterized in that the bottom of the cap has a peripheral part engaged in the wall of said dome-shaped part, and in that 'an annular-shaped seal is kept compressed against surface portions belonging to the dome-shaped piece and to the bottom by a metal L-shaped ring engaged around said wall and under the bottom so as to press on the lining in the centripetal direction and in the axial direction and to press it against said surfaces.
The single figure of the appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the watch case according to the invention, viewed in partial axial section.
The movement 1, housed in the box which will be described, is for example a rectangular-shaped movement carrying a dial 2, flat, of generally square shape, with slightly rounded sides, the shape of this dial being that of the box. The movement I is fixed to a casing circle 3, the wall of which has the shape of the box, while the internal rim 3a has a greater or lesser width along its periphery in order to adapt to the rectangular contour of the movement. 1. The method of fixing the movement to the encaging circle 3 is not shown. Usual fixing keys can be used for this, for example.
The circle 3 is fixed inside a sealed capsule which consists of a glass 4 and a bottom 5. These two parts can be made of plastic, the glass 4 being for example made of plexiglass and the bottom 5 made of a hard thermoplastic material. The two parts 4 and 5 will be manufactured by injection, which makes it easy to obtain the desired contour and dimensions. The glass 4 thus comprises a central part 6 slightly convex surrounded by a tubular rim 7 which extends downwards and which connects to a peripheral wall 8. The top of the wall 8 has a shoulder 9 which extends along a plane perpendicular to the axis of the watch. In its outer face, the wall 8 has two shoulders 10 and II while, in its inner wall, it has three successive shoulders 12, 13 and 14.
As for the bottom 5, it is molded with a peripheral rim 16 and a recess 17 located along the edge of its outer face. Because of their shape res pectins the glass 4 and the bottom 5 can be assembled to each other by fitting the bottom into the wall 8 of the glass. The rim 16 engages inside the wall 8 until it presses against the shoulder 12. It then maintains the casing ring 3 in place and, consequently, the movement I, the upper part of the ring pressing. against the shoulder 13 of the wall 8. The dimensions of the glass and more particularly of the wall 8 are chosen so that, when fitting, the periphery of the dial 2 comes to rest under the shoulder 14, so that ie dial appears under the slightly domed central part 6 of the glass.
As the adjustment of the internal face of the wall 8 relative to the external face of the flange 16 is such that the fitting of these two parts one inside the other can be easily achieved, the fixing of the two parts l ' one to the other so as to achieve a sealed capsule is obtained by means of a metal ring 18 having an L-shaped profile and an outline which corresponds to that of the sealed capsule, and by a flexible O-ring seal 19, made of rubber synthetic for example. The tubular part of the ring 18 engages around the lower end of the wall 8 by compressing the latter against the rim 16 in the centripetal direction.
As for the flat part of the ring 18, its internal edge engages the recess 17 of the bottom 5 and it closes an annular space of square profile between the edge of the wall 8, the periphery of the bottom 5 and the internal face of the ring 18. In this way, a sealed capsule is produced which can be easily opened after release of the ring 18. This sealed capsule encloses the movement in a closed space. The wall 8 will be provided, over three o'clock, with a tubular radial projection intended to provide passage for the movement's winding stem. This projection will play the role of the tube of the usual cases and will engage inside the winding crown. To open the capsule 4, 5 after removal of the ring 18, it is possible for example to grasp the bottom by the recess 17 by means of pliers.
The fixing of the sealed capsule described inside an envelope intended to protect it against impacts and to give the box its rigidity and its external appearance is also obtained in a very simple manner.
The outer casing consists of a metal case-bezel 20 and a back cover 22. The case-frame-bezel 20 is provided with lugs 21 and has an internal rim 27. The back 22 is stamped with a peripheral rim 23 in which is welded a tubular sleeve 24. The latter may for example be made of steel and has, in its sides located at six o'clock and twelve o'clock, bosses 25 intended to engage in grooves 26 formed in the internal face of the caseband. bezel 20. The sealed capsule is engaged inside the middle-bezel so that the shoulder 9 presses against the internal rim 27, the part 6 of the lens passing through the opening limited by the rim 27. It suffices then engage the sleeve 24 so as to hook the bosses 25 in the grooves 26.
The upper edge of the sleeve 24 comes to rest on the shoulder 10 of the wall 8 and presses the latter against the internal rim 27 of the carrurblunette. A tab made between the back wall and the caseband will open the box and release the waterproof capsule.
We have thus produced a watch case with a tight capsule of reduced bulk, easy to manufacture and to assemble, and the capsule of which can be opened without destruction to give access to the movement.
