Watch case made of plastic and covered by a glass Certain watch cases have already been made from plastic and provided with a circular groove cut into the case above an annular shoulder intended to accommodate a glass. The annular groove is produced using a suitable tool which enables the groove to be cut into the inner wall after the watch case has been cast. For this purpose, the cast watch case first had to be lifted out of the mold and cooled, after which it had to be placed on a machine tool with a rotating cutting tool to produce the circular groove.
The unavoidable powdery plastic particles that occur when the groove is cut must then be removed from the watch case before it is suitable for inserting the movement. In previous practice, it is therefore essential to first work the circular groove in the watch case and then to press the glass into this groove.
However, this practice has considerable disadvantages. One of these disadvantages arises when repairing the watch by removing the glass in order to access the movement. The inserting of the glass into the housing is also only possible by exerting pressure, whereby the use of a tool specially created for this purpose is required, by means of which the glass can be pressed inwards with a bulge in order to snap its edge into the groove and to be able to flatten yourself a bit again. It has also been found in practice that it is difficult to remove the glass from the housing in order to make the movement accessible for repairs without damaging it.
The object of the invention is to create a clock case made of plastic, covered by a glass, in which the disadvantages mentioned are avoided, the clockwork being inserted into the case from above and the glass can be easily inserted and removed again and that on the The glass attached to the housing also secures the movement and protects it against the ingress of moisture and contamination.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the glass has a cylindrical part below a flange-like edge with a plurality of rib-like elevations projecting over the cylindrical surface, spaced apart and distributed over the circumference,
while the part of the housing intended to accommodate this cylindrical part of the glass has a lower and an upper circular surface and the housing part lying between these surfaces with a number of grooves inclined towards the lower surface, which corresponds to the number of elevations on the glass an outlet opening is provided in the upper surface, into which the rib-like elevations can be inserted, the glass executes a downward movement on the housing into an end position by rotating above the housing and in this rests with the stop on the stop of the housing and the movement seals against the outside.
As a result, various advantages can be achieved compared to the known embodiment with a single thread groove in the inner circumferential surface of the housing and a corresponding rib-like elevation protruding over the cylindrical surface of the glass. Due to the speed of rib-like elevations or cams on the glass and a corresponding number of grooves in the housing, each with an outlet opening, the angle of rotation between glass and housing can be kept small, which makes it easier and faster to attach or remove the glass from or from the housing

enables.
By far, the result is a more uniform and better distributed contact pressure between the glass and the housing, which is of great importance with regard to a good seal and an effective protection of the work against moisture and dust. Furthermore, an inequality or inaccuracy of a single or two elevations or cams and / or recesses or grooves due to the larger number of these parts can be easily compensated without the tightness of the connection between the glass and the housing suffering any appreciable loss. The elevations or cams can also be made wider and thus more massive than in the case of a single elevation extending over the entire circumference, whereby the solidity and durability of the glass can be significantly increased.
Furthermore, the glass and housing according to the innovation can be manufactured in a simpler manner, which has a favorable effect in terms of economy and thus in price.
The invention will then be explained using figures, for example. The figures show: FIG. 1 a diagram of a clock case covered by a glass according to a known embodiment, FIG. 2 a section along line 2-2 in FIG. 1 on a larger scale, FIG. 3 a further example of a known embodiment in a diagrammatic representation 4 a first embodiment of the clock case according to the invention, which can be covered by means of a glass, in a diagrammatic representation, and FIG. 5 a second embodiment of the clock housing according to the invention with a cover glass in a diagrammatic representation.
In FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the glass is lifted off the housing, the view falling onto the underside of the glass or from above into the housing.
During the manufacture of the housing body 1, which is preferably carried out using the injection molding process, the core of the mold is removed while it is rotating. In an analogous manner, the glass is removed from the base of the mold during the rotation after the injection process has ended. During the manufacture of the housing 1, its end opposite the glass is closed by means of a base piece which forms an integral part of the body or can also consist of a metal plate 8 which has been inserted into the shape intended for forming the body before the injection process is initiated so that a firm connection is created between the body 1 and the base plate 8.
A clear, transparent plastic is used to manufacture the glass, which results in an unbreakable synthetic glass that has the required properties in terms of hardness and strength. For example, the acrylic resin commercially available under the name Lucite has been found to be suitable. A plastic is to be provided for the housing which has very good properties in terms of durability, is hard and unbreakable, has a high melting point and is insensitive to impacts and changes in shape during use.
The product marketed under the name Delrin 500 by the Du Pont de Nemours Company has produced satisfactory products.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 3, the glass 6 is provided below its flange 6 # on its cylindrical part with a single helical, rib-like elevation 9 protruding over the surface, while the surface 4 of the housing body 1 has a corresponding groove 10. The surface 4 is provided with a recess 11 communicating with the groove 10 and allowing the ridge 9 of the glass to be inserted. The fixation of the glass on the housing is thus carried out by rotating the former on the latter.
In the embodiment according to the invention according to FIG. 4, the glass 6 is to be placed on the housing 1 and to be rotated clockwise to fix it on the latter. The cylindrical part of the glass 6 below its flange 6 # is provided with four helical elevations 12. Accordingly, four grooves 14 of thread form are provided in the housing between the flanges 4 and 3, which grooves 14 are intended to receive the four elevations 12 of the glass 6.
The embodiment according to FIG. 5 differs from the embodiments previously described in that organs, as in the case of a bayonet lock, are provided as fastening means. The glass 6 has a number of protruding cams 15 on its cylindrical part located below the flange 6 #.
The surface 4 of the housing 1 has a number of perforations corresponding to the number of cams 15, which, depending on the number of cams, lead downwards in a helical manner, so that after the cams 15 have been inserted into the grooves and the glass is rotated, the latter downwards into Is moved towards the housing until the flange 6 # comes to rest on the sealing ring located on the surface 4.
In all exemplary embodiments, a tight connection between the glass and the housing is achieved by gently pressing down and turning the glass, overcoming a certain amount of friction, the friction being sufficient to prevent the glass from being inadvertently loosened from its sealing position. To lift the glass off the housing, the former only needs to be turned in the opposite direction of rotation. The clockwork inserted into the case, which is fixed in its position by the attached glass and protected against impact, can be removed from the case after removing the glass.
It has also been shown that the protruding, rib-shaped parts located on the cylindrical part of the glass provide additional protection for the work and increase the strength of the housing provided with the glass.
In the exemplary embodiments according to the invention according to FIGS. 4 and 5, too, the terminating element 8, as in the case of the known embodiment according to FIG. 2 and already mentioned in connection with this, can be a metal plate. Instead of the metal plate, however, a closing element made of synthetic glass can also be provided, which is designed in a manner analogous to the glass 6 and can be connected to the housing 1 in the same way. Such an embodiment offers the possibility of inserting the movement into the housing from below and making both sides of the movement visible.
In the manufacture of the glass and the housing, the ribs and grooves can also be interchanged, i. H. it can be provided below the flange 6% located cylindrical part of the glass 6 with one or more helical grooves, while on the cylindrical surface of the housing, which is located between the lower and upper circular stop surface 3 and 4, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Helical elevations fitting into the grooves are to be provided.
