Device for protecting a bevelled edge of a pipe
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the protection device which is the subject of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view of the assembly of this embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line A-A 'delafig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view after insertion of a wedge.
Fig. 4 is the interior view.

Fig. 6 is a partial sectional view taken along line B-B 'of FIG. 5.
The present invention relates to a device for protecting a beveled edge of a pipe, so as to prevent damage from impact to the beveled edges of the pipe and to obtain a simple and easy handling of the protection member.
The bevelled edges of a steel pipe, especially medium and large size pipes, are subject to damage during loading and unloading operations and it is therefore necessary to protect them from such damage. Prior art protection means included wrapping a piece of heavy cloth around the edges of the pipe or covering them with plastic bevel caps; however, a simple canvas, even of a certain thickness, offers a coarse finish and although requiring a considerable amount of handling, the plastic caps require an expensive molding die, especially by the choice of the dimensions of the caps required, in addition the protection is unsatisfactory against strong shocks.
In addition, one and the other of the two means have the annoying tendency to fall easily.
The object of this invention is to improve the means of the prior art by obtaining effective protection of the bevelled edges by the use of an annular member, for example made of metal, the simple removal by the use of a wedge. and to obtain an interchangeable protection device and a presentable finish.
Various embodiments of the invention are described and shown in the accompanying drawing. An annular member 1 comprising a bent portion 2 at right angles to the member 1, radially outwardly, a notch 9 cut in the annular member 1, fingers 3, 3 formed on both sides of the notch 9 on the inner surface of the annular member, and a wedge 4 which can be mounted and removed freely between the fingers 3, 3. In one embodiment shown in the drawing, the fingers 3,3 are formed by bending inwardly the part between the grooves 6,6 which are cut on the fingers 3,3. These fingers 3, 3 can be formed separately and then welded to the member 1.
The bent part 2 being at right angles, can be replaced by a part having an inclination so as to adjust the bevelled edge 8 of the pipe 7.
The use of the device described above is shown in FIGS. 3, 5 and 6. The protective member is inserted from inside the bevelled edge-8 of the pipe 7, and the wedge 4 is hammered between the fingers 3,3 so as to effectively enlarge the diameter and adjust the diameter. protective member to the inner surface of the pipe 7. This achieves an effective fit with the entire inner surface of the pipe 7 when it is under the spring pressure, thus ensuring the attachment of the protective member where it has been inserted. The wedge 4 and the fingers 3.3 are both provided on the inner side of the pipe thus giving a presentable appearance. Removal is easily carried out by extracting the wedge 4.
In one embodiment the use of steel or other metal coupled to the bent part 2 provides advantageous protection to the bevelled edge 8 of the pipe 7, by the insertion of a wedge 4 which can easily be removed simplifying thus manipulation. In addition, the insertion is effectively maintained by the wedge 4 which exerts a generally elastic pressure on the inner side of the pipe, thus guaranteeing the maintenance of the protective member during loading and unloading operations.
