Description

Plastic lid for closing canning jars
The invention relates to a plastic lid, with an essentially hollow cylindrical edge part, which has an inwardly projecting annular bead, for closing canning jars, using a sealing compound provided between the lid and the jar.

It is known to seal jars airtight with a plastic lid. For this purpose, a sealing compound is placed between the lid and the vessel, which is hard-elastic at normal temperature and changes to a soft, doughy state at sterilization temperature. In particular, this mass is introduced into an annular recess in the lid and dried, after which the lid is placed on a filled jar. If the canning jar is now subjected to the sterilization process, the mass changes to a doughy soft state and, after cooling, causes the lid to stick to the jar.

Known lids with a hollow cylindrical edge part and an inwardly protruding annular bead, however, have the disadvantage that during the sterilization process when the lid is tight, the excess air or excess steam can only very poorly escape from the glass, which means that the overpressure created in the glass causes the lid takes off. To avoid this, the lids must be weighted down during the sterilization process or held in place with a clamp.

The subject matter of the invention avoids this disadvantage. This is achieved according to the invention in that the edge part is provided with an opening at at least one point. These openings are preferably formed by interruptions in the annular bead or provided above the annular bead.

This special design of the lid thus ensures that the excess air or excess steam during the sterilization process can easily escape and thus the lid is not lifted off the jar.

An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing.

The figures show: FIG. 1 the edge of a vessel and the associated plastic lid before it is put on, in cross section, and FIG. 2 shows a section through the uppermost part of a closed vessel.

The canning jar 1 shown in FIG. 1 has a thickened edge 2 and a groove 3 underneath.

The associated cover has a central flat part 4, on the edge a channel-like recess 5 and an approximately hollow-cylindrical, downwardly protruding edge part 6 with an inwardly protruding bead-like thickening 7. The cover is made of slightly elastic plastic, so that it is widened Bead 7 can be pushed onto the glass, whereupon the annular bead 7 snaps into the groove 3.

The annular bead 7 is interrupted in some places. At these points, the cylindrical part 6 of the cover ends in a point when viewed in cross section.

These interruptions form openings 8 which allow air or steam to escape during the sterilization process without the cover being lifted off.

The process for closing the canning jars is explained in more detail below: A thin strand 10 of a material that can be plasticized by heating is injected into the annular groove 5 of the lid and stiffened by cooling.

After the vessels have been filled, the lid is placed on them. The annular bead 7 pushes itself over the thickened edge 2 with elastic expansion and engages in the groove 5, as a result of which the lid adheres to the glass. In addition, the compound 10 also causes the lid to stick slightly to the edge of the glass.

During the subsequent sterilization process, as usual, the items to be preserved are heated to 80-1000. The excess air or steam that occurs in the process can escape through the openings 8, as a result of which the lid cannot be lifted from the glass.

The sealing compound 10, softened by the heating, is distributed, as can be seen from FIG. 2, over the surface on which the cover parts 5 and 6 rest on the thickened edge of the glass vessel.

During the subsequent cooling, the thermoplastic sealing compound solidifies and glues the lid to the edge of the glass along an annular surface, whereby both a sufficiently strong mechanical and a gas-tight connection of these two parts is achieved. Nevertheless, the lid can be removed from the vessel by hand and without tools.

In order to allow the air or steam to escape during the sterilization process, a few holes distributed over the circumference can also be made in the cylindrical part 6 of the cover above the annular bead 7.

It is clear that the invention is not limited to the shape of the glass rim and cover shown and described in the exemplary embodiment, but that this shape can be changed without deviating from the scope of the invention.
