Bundle Tying Machine
The present invention relates to a machine for tying bundles, characterized in that it comprises retaining means making it possible to immobilize a bundle on a support member, a device arranged to place reinforcement plates on four parallel edges of the package and comprising two distribution groups placed face to face, the lower distributors of which distribute plates approximately at the level of the support member and the upper distributors distribute plates at a higher level, and actuating means allowing movement, on the one hand, a distribution group laterally with respect to the other and, on the other hand, the two upper distributors together and in the direction of the height,
with a view to modifying the width and height of a passage for the packet included between the distributors, the latter further comprising means for folding the plates distributed square on the edges of the packet, and a tying device comprising a member without end guided by adjustable members to describe a path a part of which closely drives said passage for the package, this endless member comprising a clamp arranged to drive a link so as to encircle the package by means of this link passing over the reinforcement plates folded on the edges of the package.

Fig. 22 is a schematic view, in cross section, and on a smaller scale, of the machine shown in FIGS. 15 and 16, to the right of an endless chain compensation device.
The machine shown in fig. 2 comprises a plate 1, on which are mounted support rollers 2 freely rotating to facilitate the advancement of a package P to be packaged.
A fixed dispenser 3 disposed at the edge of the plate 1 forms a store for reinforcing plates 4 made of corrugated cardboard, for example (FIG. 3).
The distributor 3 supports a movable upper distributor 5 guided vertically by means of a plate 6. Studs integral with the distributor 5 and passing through slots 6t of the plate 6 making it possible to block the distributor 5 at the desired height.
The dispenser 5 has a magazine for reinforcing plates 41 intended for the upper edges of the pack P.
At the height of the group formed by the superimposed distributors 3 and 5, the plate 1 comprises a slide 7 formed by two opposing U-shaped irons, the upper wings of which define a slot 7t (FIGS. 2 and 3).
The slide 7 constitutes a guide for rollers 8 arranged at the base of a movable lower distributor 9 carrying an upper distributor 10 movable vertically.
The group formed by the distributors 9 and 10 can slide transversely on the slide 7, to be moved closer or further from the group of distributors 3 and 5, depending on the width of the package P.
The two upper distributors 5 and 10 can be moved in height, simultaneously, to be placed higher or lower, depending on the height of the package.
The transverse movement of the distributor group 9, 10 is ensured by a lead screw 11 housed in the slide 7. This screw, provided with a handwheel 12, cooperates with a nut 13 fixed to the base of the distributor 9 (fig. 3 and 4).
The vertical movement of the upper distributors 5 and 10 is controlled by a transverse shaft 14 carrying a flywheel 16 and rotating in supports 15 integral with the upper distributors 5 and 10. The shaft 14 carries worm screws 17 and 18 meshing with wheels. tangents 19 and 20 integral with vertical screws 21 and 22 rotating in supports 31 and 91 integral with the lower distributors 3 and 9. The screws 21 and 22 driven in rotation by the wheels 19 and 20 cooperate with nuts 23 integral with the upper distributors 5 and 10.
The rotation of the shaft 14 thus causes the height displacement of the distributors 5 and 10. After adjustment, the locking in position is effected by means of the nuts mounted on the guide pins of the distributors.
In front of the distributors 3, 5 - 9, 10, a roller 24, adjustable in height, is arranged along the entire width of the plate 1, to press on the upper face of the packet P.
This roller 24 is carried at its right end by an extension of the support 15 of the upper distributor 5. At its left end, it is carried by a vertical support 25 fixed on the plate 1.
The height displacement of the roller 24 is provided at its right end by the upper distributor 5, and its left end by a vertical screw 28 bearing on the support 25 and meshing with the shaft 14 via a endless screw 26 and a tangent wheel 27. A nut 29 screwed on the screw 28 supports the axis of the roller 24 and thus allows its vertical displacement, in combination with the displacement of the upper distributors 5 and 10.
The roller 24 is a motor, to ensure the drive of the package. Its rotation is ensured by a motor placed under the plate 1, and driving a vertical shaft 30 connected to the roller by angle pinions 31.
The assembly formed by the distributors is completed by brackets 32 fixed to the lower distributors 3 and 9 and forming a guide passage for the package P.
To this end, each distributor has a transverse slot F allowing the evacuation by sliding of the lower plate of the stack under the action of thrust vanes 33 and 331 mounted on two vertical shafts 34 each relating to a group of superimposed distributors.
The shafts 34 are driven individually by motors M placed at their upper ends.
They are carried by the lower distributors 3 and 9; the upper vanes 331, cooperating with the slots Ft, are slidably mounted on the shafts 34.
The plates 4 and 41 extracted from the distributors are bent squarely to rest on the edges of the pack P.
During this operation, the plates are brought to the shape indicated in broken lines in fig. 8, by means of folding cams 35 end-keyed on transverse shafts 36 and 361 supported by the rear faces of the distributors. These shafts 36 and 361 are driven in rotation by the vertical shafts 34, via bevel gears 37 and 38.
After the plates have been placed and folded at right angles, the machine makes it possible to surround the package with a tie resting on the plates. This link being, after tightening, fixed by ligature, welding or by any other means.
To this end, the upper distributors 5 and 10, as well as the lower distributors 3 and 9 comprise pinions 40 guiding an endless chain C, following a rectangular path corresponding to the periphery of the pack P. Return pulleys 41 cooperate with a load 42 to form a useful length and tension compensator for the chain C, allowing it to travel independently of the vertical and transverse adjustments of the distributors.
The drive of the chain C is obtained either independently or in synchronism with the motors M for controlling the bending of the reinforcement plates, by any clutch device.
The chain C comprises a support 43 having a traction clamp 44 intended to grip the end of a wire L, to drive it along the path of the chain C around the package P.
The metal wire L, or any other link, is brought to a gripping point of the gripper 44, by means of drive rollers G with independent control.
The chain C, while traveling, grasps by its clamp 44 the wire L which surrounds the package P, resting on the angles 4 and 41.
At the end of the stroke, when the end of the wire L arrives opposite the other strand, the drive rollers
G are stopped by means not shown, while the chain C continues its course, so as to ensure the tension of the thread L and as a result of its tightening on the package.
After tightening, the overlapping ends of the wire
L are fixed by welding, twisting, knotting or by any other means, while the outer strand is cut by means of a manually or automatically controlled shear.
The package P is then pushed back by the drive roller 24 to be received by the carrier rollers 21.
In a first variant, the distributors can be arranged as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
In this variant, the distributors 45-46 arranged on the same side of the machine are offset transversely; the transverse movement controls of a lateral group and the height movement of the upper distributors remain unchanged.
At the front of the distributors 45 and 46, on each side of the machine, is arranged a vertical shaft 47 carrying a bevel wheel 48 cooperating with a pinion 49 keyed on a shaft 50 carrying a pinion 51 ensuring the drive of a chain endless C1 placed below the distributor 45. The chain C1 guided by two rollers 52 and 53 has a triangular path comprising a rectilinear and horizontal part. The chain C1 carries a projecting finger C2 engaging in an axial slot 451 cut in the bottom of the distributors 45 so as to push the lower reinforcement plate. This plate is driven transversely, along the strand between the rollers 52 and 53, while being guided by a profiled passage 54.
At the end of the stroke, the plate is engaged by half-part below the package P and is retained in this position by a leaf spring 55.
The rear part of the plate is biased by a folding finger 56 mounted on a transverse shaft 57 carrying a bevel gear 58 meshing with a pinion 59 fixed on the shaft 47.
The transmission ratios allow, on the one hand, the advance and the positioning of the plate while the finger 56 performs its rotation below the plate and, on the other hand, the folding operation by the folding finger. 56, during the return of the finger C2 of the chain Ct.
The same arrangements are found for the upper distributor 46, the lower plate of which is urged to push by the finger C3 of a chain C4 driven by a bevel wheel 60. A spring 61 holds the plate while a folding finger 62 secured to it. a tree 63 plaice. The shaft 63 carries a bevel gear 64 cooperating with a pinion 65 fixed on the shaft 47.
In a variant of the tying means shown in FIG. 14, the device for compensating the length of the transverse endless chain C5 comprises a return pulley 67 and a return pulley 68 mounted on a movable nut 69 cooperating with a transverse screw 70 arranged under the lead screw 71 intended for the transverse displacement of the distributors.
The screw 70 carries a pinion 72 meshing with a pinion 73 fixed on the screw 71. During the approach of the distributors controlled by the screw 71, the nut 69 moves by driving the pulley 68 so as to compensate for the useful length of the chain C5.
A counterweight 74, suspended from the chain C5 by means of a pulley, allows variations in length due to the vertical movements of the upper distributors 46.
In a second variant of the dispensing means shown in FIG. 13, the dispensers include rolls of corrugated cardboard or other material. The axes of these rollers are capable of vertical and transverse movements to adapt their position to the dimensions of the package.
The strip unwound from a roll passes between two rollers 75, one of which is driven by a chain 76, driven by a train of bevel gears 78, from a shaft 77.
A knife 79 moving opposite fixed counterblades 80 and 81 arranged on each side of the strip is driven in rotation by means of a transverse shaft 82 meshing by bevel gears 83, 84 with the shaft 77.
The knife 79 has a roller shaped to bend the wafer square after cutting the web.
In a variant shown in FIGS. 11 and 12, the cerclage wire traction clamp may include a flat body 85 having a clearance in which is articulated a clamping lever 86 biased by a spring 87. The lever 86 has an eccentric end portion forming a clamping wedge. the wire L against a bearing face 851 of the body. A spout 852 ensures the guiding of the wire while avoiding its release, whatever the position of the clamp.
The support rollers 2 of the package P are provided with motors, with any adjustment device allowing controlled and precise advances of the package P. The various mechanisms of the machine can be controlled by any compressed air or hydraulic device.
The machine, semi-automatic, makes it possible to place and bend reinforcement plates on the edges of a bundle, and then to surround the bundle with a tie which is ligated after its tensioning.
This machine allows, by its adjustable members, the packaging of packages of variable dimensions.
In a second embodiment shown
in fig. 15 and 16, the upper distributors 88 and 89
are supported by vertical columns 90 arranged in pairs on the sides of the machine. These columns 90 are movable and slide in guides 91 integral with the upright 92 included in the frame.
At their upper ends, the columns 90 are connected by transverse spacers 93 forming a guide track for rollers 94 located at the base of the upper distributors.
By their lower ends, the columns 90 are fixed to a frame 95 movable vertically.
The frame 95 comprises plates 96 carrying nuts 97 cooperating with vertical screws 98 carrying bevel gears 99 cooperating with wheels 100 keyed on a transverse shaft 101, driven manually or mechanically.
The rotation of the shaft 101 causes the simultaneous rotation of the screws 98 and, consequently, the height displacement of the frame 95 and of the columns 90. The height position of the upper distributors 88 and 89 can thus be adapted to the height of the package. .
The columns 90 also guide lateral flanges 102 having tabs 103 and which are connected by transverse spacers 104 intended to be applied on the package P, in order to immobilize it.
This mobile assembly, sliding on the columns 90, is coupled to connecting rods 105 articulated on the levers 106 fixed to a control shaft 107 rotating in bearings 108 carried by plates 96.
The shaft 107 also carries a lever 109 actuated by a hydraulic, pneumatic or other actuator V.
The lifting of the plates 96, during the movement control of the upper distributors 88 and 89 also drives the side plates 102 and, consequently, the spacers 104, to allow the passage of the package P.
After the package has been put in place, the jack V is actuated and the spacers 104 press on the package P.
The chain intended to drive the strapping wire is arranged as shown in FIGS. 17 and 18. The chain C6 is guided in its lower part by a train of pulleys to allow, among other things, by successive returns, a vertical travel between two pulleys 110 and 111.
The chain C6 carrying a traction clamp 112 for driving the wire L carries, downstream of this clamp, a finger 113 cooperating with a cleat 1141 integral with a vertical slide 114 disposed opposite the pulleys 110 and 111. This slide 114 returned to the high position by a spring 115 carries at its upper part a directing clamp 116 placed on the circuit of the wire L driven by the chain. A twist block 117 is also arranged above the slide 114.
The chain C6, by its protruding finger 113 cooperating with the cleat 1141, causes the slide 114 to be lowered, as illustrated in FIG. 18.
This movement of the slide 114 causes the removal of the directing clamp 116, so as to allow the passage of the traction clamp 112 and the wire L.
The wire L is then hooked by the guide clamp 116 which rises sharply after disengaging the finger 113 from the cleat 1141, the slide 114 rising sharply under the action of the spring 115, to bring the wire L opposite a clamp 1171 of the twist block 117.
The wire L, which is immobilized by the directing clamp 116, is then twisted. During this operation, the chain C6 continues its path and, at the end of the operation, the traction clamp 112 is presented opposite the wire L, to grip it and ensure a new circuit around the package P.
In a third variant, the plate dispensing means can be arranged as shown in FIGS. 19 to 21.
Distributors 118 and 119 include a vertical shaft 120 driven, for example, by an independent motor.
The shaft 120 drives, by means of pinions, two endless chains C7 and C8 intended to convey the plates T and T1 towards the contiguous angles of the package P.
The shaft 120 carries cams 121 and 122 on which the rollers of two levers 123 and 124 bear.
The upper lever 123 pivots on an axis 125 and has at its free end a transverse finger 126 located first of all just above the upper face of the plate T, before it is folded.
The bending of the plate T is effected by the finger 126 during the pivoting of the lever 123. The bend is applied exactly to the edge of the package P, forming a sharp angle.
The lower lever 124 pivots on a pin 127 and carries at its free end a roller 128.
A fixed guide 129, arranged below the package
P and integral with a support plate 130, maintains the plate T2 after its admission under the package P.
The guide 129 carries a movable flap 131 carrying a cam 132 bearing on the roller 128.
The pivoting of the lever 124 causes the folding in vertical position of the shutter 131 and, consequently, the net folding of the plate T2.
The upper plate T is held on the package P by means of a guide 133 integral with the spacers 104.
In a variant, the device for compensating the wire drive chain can be arranged as shown in FIG. 22. The automatic adjustment of the useful length of a chain e, depending on the width of the package P, is ensured automatically on the one hand by means of a transverse lead screw 134 driven in synchronism with the group control screw. distributors, and on the other hand, in the vertical direction, by a return pinion 135 fixed to the profiled irons 95 connecting movable columns 136 supporting the distributors 118 and 119.
The height adjustment of the opening of the chain, to adapt it to the height of the package P, is obtained directly as a result of the vertical displacement of the mobile frame, so as to make the upper part C10 of the chain overlap, having with regard to the upper side of the P.
In this attachment device, a tensioning device acts on the wire L after it is held by the clamp 117t of a twist block 117. This device comprises an electromagnet 137 acting by means of links 138 on a roller of support 139 cooperating with a second roller 140.
The distributors shown schematically at 118 and 119 are preferably arranged so as to be interchangeable, to facilitate their replacement.
An automatic counting device can be added to ensure the control of the number of packages. The counting device can in particular be coupled to a command triggering the stopping or starting of a mechanism of the machine.
Note that the rear of the machine has a movable side facilitating access to the central part of the mechanisms.
