Binding agents The invention relates to binding agents or adhesives and in particular, but not exclusively, to agents which are suitable for fastening boards or panels to walls, ceilings or floors.
Decorative boards or panels made of plastic laminates, hardboard, chipboard or plywood, which are particularly suitable for the cladding of construction elements in buildings, are usually supplied in relatively large formats, for example 2.75 X 1.25 m.
Known Ver drive to attach such panels, based on the use of chaneled sections, but these are relatively expensive and require specialist male plant and processing. Adhesives can also be used, but the adhesives available, which are cheap enough to be used for the said purpose, do not give satisfactory bond strength.
It is an object of the invention to develop an inexpensive adhesive or binding agent, hereinafter referred to as binding agent for the sake of simplicity, which in its uncured state has the property referred to as adhesive strength and which has high structural strength when the hardening process is completed .
The binders are particularly useful to bind panels or panels to structural elements, especially brick walls and ceilings, because the adhesive force of the binder is often sufficient to hold the panel or panel in place during the curing process expires, and thus makes cumbersome fastening means or holding devices superfluous.
According to the invention, a mass that can be used as a binding agent comprises a mixture of a synthetic resin and a filler and is characterized in that
that the resin belongs to the urea-formaldehyde type and is only partially soluble in water and that the mixture, when mixed with water, results in an aqueous alkaline binder which is sticky until it solidifies or hardens.
As can be seen, the invention can be distinguished from the prior art in that the curing takes place under alkaline conditions, while urea-formaldehyde adhesives containing fillers are usually cured under acidic conditions and are not tacky in the uncured state .
The alkalinity of the mixture can result from the filler or from a component of the filler, for example if cement or lime is used, or if fillers such as china clay, sand, quartz dust, lime, gypsum or wood flour are used that do not contain al give calic reaction, an alkaline substance must be such. B. sodium hydroxide to be added to the mixture.
It goes without saying that fillers which give an alkaline reaction in water and fillers which show a practically neutral reaction can be used mixed with one another; in this case it may be necessary to reduce the thinning effect of the neutral filler by adding alkali, e.g. B. caustic soda to counteract the mixture.
The preferred fillers are mixtures of sand and cement or quartz flour and cement in which the ratio of sand or quartz flour to cement is in the range from 1: 1 to -6: -1. The term cement is intended to include Portland cement, Ciment Fondu and 417 (Super Fast Setting).
Another class of neutral fillers that can advantageously be included in the mixture are fibrous fillers, e.g. B. asbestos fibers or cellulose fibers. These serve to retard the flow of the uncured mass and are particularly useful when thick layers are to be applied to non-horizontal surfaces. Water-soluble cellulose derivatives can be added to intensify this effect.
An essential requirement of the urea-formaldehyde resin, which is to be used as a component of the adhesive according to the invention, is that it must not be completely soluble in water.
Masses which have been produced from urea-formaldehyde condensates of relatively low molecular weight, which are completely water-soluble in a mixture with fillers of the types specified above, do not have the property described above as bond strength and are not within the scope of the invention.
The urea-formaldehyde resins which are suitable for use in the adhesive according to the invention can be converted into a kind of syrup by adding separate amounts of water. However, the insolubility of the resin is shown by precipitating out when small amounts of the syrup can be added to large amounts of water.
Mixtures of dry resin and fillers can be stored, and the binder can be prepared by adding enough water to the dry mixture immediately before use to produce a mass of the required consistency, or by making the filler into one aqueous resin syrup is added.
The ratio of dry resin to filler should be in the range from 1:20 to 1: 1 and preferably in the range from 1: 8 to 1: 1, expressed as a weight ratio. If a resin syrup is used, the water present must be taken into account, when the weight of the filling material is determined to be added to the weight unit of syrup.
Resins treated with conventional amounts of acid or acid-releasing hardeners, e.g. B. ammonium chloride or phosphate, can be used, but the acid of the hardening agent is neutralized by the alkaline filler and does not fulfill any useful purpose.
Adhesives according to the invention are particularly suitable for binding boards, panels or similar materia lien to building elements, and the method for using an adhesive according to the invention include the application of the adhesive to a building element, whereupon a board is firmly attached to the treated surface is kept in contact,
until the compound is "sufficiently solidified or hardened to enable the" carrier to be removed, or the adhesive compound is applied to the board and the board coated with the binder is held in contact with the component until the compound has hardened .
In the case of smaller or lighter boards, the adhesive strength of the binder is sufficient to keep the board in contact with the treated surface while the mass cures without a carrier.
The binder can be spread all over a surface to which a plate or board is to be attached, or it can be applied to individual locations with suitable spaces. Each laminate board or fiber board can be attached to suitable structural elements with the aid of the binders according to the invention.
Binding agents according to the invention can be used in construction instead of the usual sand-cement mixtures.
Example 1 To produce a specific binder according to the invention, 15 parts by weight of an acid-forming hardener, which is available under the trade name L38 from Ciba, (A: R.L.) Ltd. is sold with 100 parts by weight of the urea-formaldehyde synthetic resin adhesive, which is sold as an aqueous syrup-like solution with a solids content of 69 and as Aerolite. KL (Aerolite is a registered trademark).
The ingredients were mixed thoroughly, the mixture was then diluted to twice its volume by adding water and then used to make a mixture of sand and cement in the ratio of 3:
1 to bring it to the normal consistency of a sand-cement mortar. This adhesive was then applied to a brick wall in such an amount as to level out any unevenness in its surface, and then became a panel made from a sheet of plywood covered on both sides with plastic laminate panels and had a size of 2.75 X 1.25 in,
put on and supported in a vertical position until the mixture was sufficiently hardened that the carrier could be removed.
An equally satisfactory composition was prepared by modifying the above example by omitting the hardener. Example 11 A second mass according to the invention was prepared by thoroughly mixing the following ingredients with one another:

A measure of the adhesive strength and adhesive strength of this mass after curing was obtained by measuring the tensile shear strength of wood-wood joints which had been produced using the mass as an adhesive. Connections were made by coating the last 21/2 cm of beech veneer test pieces with the dimensions 100 X 25 X 3 mm with adhesive and putting the pieces together so that an adhesive area of about 6 cm2 was created.
After joining, the pieces were pressed together at 7 kg / cm2 for 12 hours and then left without pressure for a further 14 days before they were examined. The mean value of the tensile shear strength of 6 connections was 35 kg / cm2. Example III A third mass according to the invention was prepared by thoroughly mixing the following ingredients:
EMI0003.0014
