Tool for handling a log
The present invention relates to a tool for handling a wooden log, characterized in that it comprises a lever provided at one end with a handle and at the other end with a cradle serving as a fulcrum. at the lever, a hook articulated to the lever in its middle part, opposite the cradle with respect to the axis of the lever, being intended to grip the ball by means of a wedge-shaped blade, by cooperating with lugs protruding from the end of the lever.
The cradle can consist of two metal hoops, inclined relative to the median plane passing through the hook, each hoop having a half-heart profile, with the bulging part towards the end of the lever opposite the handle.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the tool which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation.
Fig. 2, a plan view.
Fig. 3, a profile view, while
fig. 4 is a perspective of the tool.
The handling tool shown comprises a metal lever arm (1), one of the ends (2) of which forms a handle; the other end serves as a support for the cradle (6) and, on the side opposite the cradle, for a curved J-shaped flat iron (7).
The curved part of the latter supports an attached blade (8) in the form of a wedge, intended to be planted in the ball. A hole (9) at the end of the rectilinear part of the hook allows the passage of the bolt (10) serving as its axis of rotation. This bolt is held by two supports (11) welded to the lever.
The end of the lever arm opposite the handle is flattened; the round bars of the cradle are welded to it.
These irons end in the form of lugs (12) which fix the trunk. The spacing of the half-heart-shaped hoops (14) is maintained by a transverse flat iron (13), welded in the most flared part of the cradle. The round bars of the hoops meet again at the other end of the cradle and are welded to the lever arm near the axis of the hook.
The handling tool described is used as follows:
The lever is brought vertically to the trunk, the hook being raised; the hook is vigorously lowered onto the trunk, then the lever is rotated in the axis of the log until the handle touches the ground. The tool then maintains itself in this position, the trunk thus being lifted off the ground.
The tool described is intended mainly to lift the logs so as to be able to saw them mechanically and this carried out by a single man; it also allows logs to be turned for pruning and shelling.
It has the following advantages:
When the handling handle is on the ground, the center of gravity of the log falls into the support polygon of the tool which, as a result, maintains itself in balance in this position. By the hoops spaced from the cradle, it is stable laterally.
When not in use, it is balanced vertically and, its handle being, for example, painted red, it is very easily spotted in the forest, especially in the snow.
