3-Dimethylaminopropanol,
4-Dimethylaminobutanol,
Beispiel I

Use of coumarin derivatives as optical brightening agents
The present invention relates to the use of the quaternization products of compounds of the coumarin series of the formula
EMI1.1
in which A stands for an optionally substituted phenylene or naphthylene radical, R stands for hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical, e.g. B. methyl, ethyl or propyl, and Y stand for O or NH, while Ri is an alkylene radical with preferably 2-4 carbon atoms and R2 and R3 are identical or different alkyl or aralkyl radicals, as optical brighteners for treating textile fibers, in particular made of polyacrylonitrile or cellulose esters.
The phenylene radical A is preferably substituted by the radicals -OH, -O-alkyl, -O-aralkyl, -NH2, -NH-alkyl, -N (alkyl) 2, -NHCO-alkyl, -NHCO-aryl, -NHCONH-alkyl or -NHCONH-aryl; but there can also be other substituents present, such as. B. alkyl groups or halogen; the naphthylene radical A can also be substituted.
The compounds of the coumarin series proposed as lightening agents are accessible by using coumarin-3-carboxylic acid derivatives of the general formula
EMI1.2
in which A and R have the meaning given above and in which X is a reactive radical, e.g. B. a free or esterified hydroxyl group or halogen, with amines of the general formula
EMI1.3
in which Y, Ri, R2 and R3 have the meaning given above, expediently reacted with heating and the reaction products obtained quaternized.
Representatives of the coumarin-3-carboxylic acid derivatives required as starting materials here are the methyl, ethyl, oxyethyl, propyl, butyl and phenyl esters of 7-oxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, 7-methoxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, 7 -Dimethylaminocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, 7-acetylaminocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, 5, 6-benzocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid and 7, 8-benzocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid, for example. As amines are z.
B. the following compounds listed: 2-dimethylaminoethanol,
2-diethylaminoethanol,
3-dimethylaminopropanol,
4-dimethylaminobutanol,
1-amino-2-dimethylaminoethane,
1-amino-2-diethylaminoethane, l-amino-3-dimethylaminopropane and 1-amino-3-diethylaminopropane.
Examples of quaternizing agents which may be mentioned are dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, methyl SToluenesulfonate, ethyl 4-toluenesulfonate or benzyl chloride.
The optical brightening agents can be used in the customary manner, for example in the form of solutions in water or in organic solvents or in the form of aqueous dispersions; the lightening agents can also be used together with detergents.
Coumarin compounds have already been proposed for lightening textile fibers, including those made from polyacrylonitrile or cellulose esters, which contain a carbonamide radical or a carboxylic acid ester group optionally substituted by alkyl radicals in the 3-position of the coumarin ring (French patent number 1 159 273) ; These coumarin compounds, however, are always practically water-insoluble benzocoumarin compounds which lack a solubilizing tertiary amino or quaternary ammonium group. The advantages which the above whitening agents offer over these known agents due to their ease of use are of considerable value in practice.
In addition, aminocoumarin compounds have already been proposed for lightening synthetic fiber materials which contain a carboamide group in the 3-position of the coumarin ring which is substituted by a phenyl radical. However, such aminocoumarin compounds are not absorbed by the textile fibers themselves; for this reason they always have to be combined with synthetic resins (French patent specification number 1 168 226). Compared to these coumarin compounds, the coumarin compounds to be used according to the invention, which are substituted in the carbonamide residue in the 3-position by an alkyl residue bearing a quaternary ammonium group, are distinguished by their ease of use and their surprisingly high degree of effectiveness.
Their superiority is also illustrated by the comparative test included in Example 5.
The parts given in the following examples are parts by weight.
Example I.
Polyacrylonitrile fibers are introduced into an aqueous bath in a liquor ratio of 1:40, which contains 0.05 g of the lightening agent listed below and 1 g of oxalic acid and 1 g of sodium chlorite per liter. The bath is then heated to the boil over the course of 20 minutes and held at this temperature for 45-60 minutes. The polyacrylonitrile fibers are then rinsed and dried. The fibers are lightened in an excellent way.
The brightening agent used was prepared in the following way: 268 parts of 5, 6-benzo-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester were mixed with 125 parts of 3-dimethylamino-propylamine and heated on a boiling water bath for 6 hours. Then the melt was triturated with 1500 parts of water; the resulting crystal slurry was added to 10,000 parts of water and, after stirring for two hours, filtered off with suction. The 5,6-benzo-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid-3'-dimethylaminopropylamide obtained in this way melted at 122-124 after recrystallization from cyclohexane. 110 parts of the 5,6-benzo-coumarin-3-carboxylic acid-3'-dimethylaminopropylamide obtained were then heated with 600 parts of acetone, and 50 parts of dimethyl sulfate were added dropwise.
After the reaction mixture had been refluxed for a further 30 minutes, the crystal slurry formed was filtered off with suction and recrystallized from alcohol. The resulting quaternary salt melted at 215-218.
Instead of the lightening agent listed above, one of the lightening agents can also be used with the same success and were prepared in the following manner: 536 parts of ethyl 5,6-benzocoumarin-3-carboxylate were gradually admixed with 208 parts of 3-dimethylamino-propylamine, while stirring When the temperature was increased to 60, a homogeneous brown-yellow mass was formed. As soon as the temperature began to drop again, the reaction mixture was heated on a boiling water bath for two hours.
After the mixture had been diluted with 2000 parts of acetone, 284 parts of methyl iodide, 312 parts of ethyl iodide, 308 parts of diethyl sulfate, 372 parts of methyl 4-toluenesulfonate or 400 parts of ethyl 4-toluenesulfonate were added dropwise with stirring so that the solution always boiled under reflux . The reaction mixture was then refluxed for a further three hours, then cooled, and the precipitated crystal slurry was filtered off with suction.
The melting points of the quaternary salts obtained in this way are shown in the following table: Quaternizing agent recrystallized from the melting point of the quaternary salt methyl iodide, methanol and water 252-254, ethyl iodide, methanol and water 254-255 diethyl sulfate, methanol 215-218 ST, methyl toluenesulfonate, methanol 190-193, ethyl 4-toluenesulfonate l2ithanol 180-181
Example 2
Cellulose acetate fibers are treated in a liquor ratio of 1:30 at 30-70 for 20-30 minutes in an aqueous bath which contains 0.03 g per liter of the lightening agent listed below.
The fibers are then rinsed and dried; they then show a very good lightening effect.
The lightening agent used was prepared in the following manner: 268 parts of ethyl 5,6-benzo-coumarin-3-carboxylate and 206 parts of 3-dimethylamino-propanol were stirred for 6 hours on a boiling water bath. The excess 3-dimethylaminopropanol and the ethanol formed were then distilled off in vacuo on a boiling water bath. The residue was dissolved in 800 parts of acetone and 126 parts of dimethyl sulfate were added dropwise to the solution, causing the temperature to rise to about 40%. After the solution had been refluxed for a further 2 hours, it was cooled; the resulting crystalline reaction product was filtered off with suction and recrystallized from methanol.
The melting point of the quar tary salt formed was 204-210.
Instead of the lightening agent listed above, one of the lightening agents can be used with the same success which were prepared by using 2-dimethylaminoethanol or 2-diethylaminoethanol instead of 3-dimethylaminopropanol in the specified procedure, in which case the corresponding compounds with them melting points 282 and 235, respectively.
Example 3
Polyacrylonitrile fibers are treated in the manner indicated in Example 1 with one of the two lightening agents listed below. The lightening effect achieved is excellent.
One of the lightening agents was made in the following way:
268 parts of 5,6-benzocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester were mixed with 104 parts of 3-dimethylaminopropylamine, the temperature rising to 50%. The mixture was then warmed to 100 and stirred on a boiling water bath for 2 hours.
The dark-colored melt was then diluted with 1000 parts of toluene and then 127 parts of benzyl chloride were added. The mixture was again heated to 100 and stirred on a boiling water bath for 20 hours. After the mixture had cooled, the precipitated crystalline reaction product was filtered off with suction and recrystallized from alcohol. The resulting quaternary salt melted at 229-230.
The other lightening agent was made in the following way:
268 parts of 5,6-benzocoumarin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester were heated to 100 with 137 parts of 3-diethylaminopropylamine and kept at this temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was then diluted with 1000 parts of acetone and 126 parts of dimethyl sulfate were added dropwise; the temperature rose to about 60. After the reaction mixture had refluxed for a further 3 hours, it was cooled and left to stand at about 0 for 12 hours. Then the deposited crystals were filtered off with suction, washed with acetone and recrystallized from 700 parts of alcohol.
The resulting quaternary salt melted at 134-140.
Example 4
CeRulose acetate fibers are treated in the manner indicated in Example 2 with one of the two lightening agents listed below. The fibers are then very well lightened.
One of the lightening agents was made in the following way:
67 parts of 7-oxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester were mixed with 30 parts of 3-dimethylaminopropylamine and the mixture was heated on a boiling water bath for 2 hours. After 200 parts of acetone was added, 36 parts of dimethyl sulfate were dropped into the solution. The temperature increased to about 60 and a crystalline precipitate formed. The reaction mixture was refluxed for a further 3 hours, then the precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed with acetone and recrystallized from a mixture of 150 parts of methanol and 50 parts of water. The resulting quaternary salt melted at 238 to 247.
The other lightening agent was made in the following way:
32 parts of ethyl 7-dimethylaminocoumarin-3-carboxylate were mixed with 13 parts by weight of 3-dimethyl aminopropylamine, and the mixture was stirred on a boiling water bath for 2 hours. The melt was then diluted with 150 parts of acetone and 16 parts of dimethyl sulfate were added dropwise. After the reaction mixture had been refluxed for a further 3 hours, the precipitate formed was filtered off with suction, washed with acetone and recrystallized from methanol. The quaternary salt formed had a melting point of 265-267.
Example 5
Comparative experiment:
There were a) samples of polyacrylonitrile fabric with the brightening agent of Example 11 of the French
Patent specification No. 1,159,273 and b) samples of the same tissue treated with the Aufhel agent of Example 1 of the present documents.
The fabrics were each placed in a liquor ratio of 1:40 in an aqueous bath which contained 1 g of oxalic acid per liter. In the case of series a), the bath contained 0.075 g of the corresponding lightening agent and 0.68 g of a commercially available dispersant per liter, while the bath of series b) contained 0.15 g of the corresponding lightening agent. When the fabrics were treated in a further series of tests, the baths per liter also contained 1 g of sodium chlorite each. In all cases, the briders were heated to the boil within 20 minutes and kept at this temperature for 45 to 60 minutes, then the fabrics were rinsed and then dried.
The amounts of whitening agent used are the amounts with which the maximum degree of whitening was achieved.
The brightener defined according to the invention brings about a higher degree of brightening than that according to French patent specification number 1,159,273.
