Description
Exhaust silencer for an internal combustion engine The present invention relates to an exhaust silencer for an internal combustion engine, characterized by an inlet pipe connecting to the exhaust and entering concentrically, in a cylindrical sleeve,
the portion of the pipe located inside the sleeve being pierced with at least one orifice through which the engine exhaust gases arriving through the pipe can pass into the space formed between the respective walls of the pipe and the sleeve, the end of the latter being closed by a closure cap provided with an opening, said cap having an appendage extending inside the sleeve and blocking the end of the pipe,
this appendage being pierced with at least one orifice communicating with the opening of the stopper and through which the gases contained in the sleeve can pass to reach the opening of the stopper and spread into the atmosphere.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section thereof; fig. 2 is a section on I-I of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a section on II-II of FIG. 1; fig. 4 is a detail of FIG. 1.
The silencer shown comprises a cylindrical sleeve into which enters a concentrically a gas inlet pipe 2 pierced with orifices 3 arranged on the portion of the pipe 2 located inside the sleeve 1. The end 4 of the pipe 2 is located inside the sleeve 1, and its other end 5 opens out of the latter and is intended to be connected to the exhaust of an internal combustion engine not shown. The end 5 of the pipe 2 is centered at its exit from the sleeve 1 by a ring 6.
The latter is fixed, for example welded against the wall of the sleeve 1 and closes the opening of said sleeve, while allowing the pipe 2 which is fixed by a screw 7. The end 4 of the pipe 2 is centered in the sleeve 1 to pass. by means of a plug 8 of cylindrical shape closing off the sleeve 1 on which it is fixed by means of a screw 9.
The stopper 8 has, inside the sleeve 1, a cylindrical appendage 10, the free end 11 of which is provided with a plate 12 serving to stop the end 4 of the pipe 2 engaged in the appendix 10. The wall of the latter is provided with orifi these 13 of elongated shape. The stopper 8 is also provided with an outlet opening 15 provided in its side wall 14.
The exhaust silencer shown operates as follows The exhaust gases from the engine enter, in the direction of arrow 16, into pipe 2 and exit through orifices 3 to spread into the space 17 between the walls of the sleeve 1 and of the pipe 2. Since the sleeve 1 is closed at both ends, the gases pass through the orifices 13 made on the appendage 10, and through the outlet opening 15 to spread into the atmosphere.
It is also planned to give different shapes to the orifices 3 and 13. The various members of the silencer are made of metal, in particular non-ferrous metal, in order to reduce the corrosive action of the exhaust gases.
Given that the silencer described comprises a small number of parts which are all integral with one another, it is not possible to remove one in order to modify the action of said pot.
In order to filter the gases spreading in the atmosphere, provision is made to insert into the sleeve 1, near the stopper 8, a removable wire spool 18 made of stainless steel straw, surrounding the pipe. 2.
