Description

Exhaust The present invention relates to a muffler for an internal combustion engine comprising an elongated housing having at one of its ends an inlet port provided with means for its connection to the engine exhaust duct and, at its other end, an outlet for the burnt gases, characterized in that this housing comprises two elements assembled together, each of these being provided with an internal wall shaped so as to form a cavity limited in the direction of the length of the casing by two bosses having longitudinal channels for evacuating the burnt gases, a lining of insulating material being interposed between the walls of each element.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the exhaust pipe which is the subject of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a view in longitudinal axial section along I-I of FIG. 2; fig. 2 is a sectional view along II-II of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a sectional view along III-III of FIG. 1; fig. 4 is a sectional view along IV-IV of FIG. 1.

The muffler shown comprises an elongated housing 1 having at one of its ends an inlet orifice 2 provided with means for its connection to the exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine and, at its other end, a burnt gas outlet 3. The housing 1 is formed by two elements 4 and 5 having sheet metal walls 6 and 7 provided laterally with outer edges 8 and 9, the latter being placed opposite and assembled by welding.

Each element 4 and 5 has an interior wall 10 of the same shape as the corresponding exterior wall thereof, to which it is welded by its edges; each wall 10 is made of shaped sheet metal pierced with holes 11 and having a central or median opening 12 limited in the direction of the length of the muffler by two bosses 13 having coaxial longitudinal channels 14, the channels 14 of an element being next to those of the other element; along these channels 14 are intended to move, in the direction of arrow 15, the burnt gases entering through orifice 2 and exiting through orifice 3.

At the front end of each interior wall 10, between the inlet orifice 2 and the corresponding boss 13, a cavity 16 is provided; likewise, at the downstream end of each inner wall 10, between the outlet orifice 3 and the corresponding boss 13, there is a cavity 17 similar to 16.

Between the wall 6 or 7 of an element and the corresponding inner wall 10 is placed a lining of insulating material, fiberglass, for example; the latter is intended to slow down the oscillations of said interior walls.

The operation of the muffler shown is as follows The exhaust gases from the engine enter said muffler through the orifice 2, relaxing in the cavity 16 then entering through the longitudinal channels 14 into the cavity 12 where they continue to relax ; then these gases end in cavity 17, after having moved into longitudinal longitudinal channels 14, where they further relax before escaping out through the orifice 3.

As a variant, provision is made for the walls 10 to be made from non-perforated sheet metal.
