It is known that it is possible to print and dye synthetic polyamides by the so-called dry thermal printing technique using sublimable dyes. This technique is described in French patents N "<B> 1223330 </B> and <B> 1585119 </B> for example.
One of the major drawbacks of this way of proceeding is the low penetration of the coloring materials into the material to be dyed (or printed); the coloring matters remain on the surface, so that if this technique is applied to materials of a certain thickness, such as carpets for example, (materials which it is difficult to print and for which this technique presents real advantages) one comes up against the difficulty of making the dyes penetrate into the material deeply enough so that, under the surface printing, the inside of the material does not remain white and that, in the case of carpets for example, the hair is colored over its entire length and not only at its upper part.
This drawback has been remedied by using complicated equipment, which enables the transfer of the coloring materials under vacuum. This equipment, besides being more complex than that which is usually used in thermo-printing, does not allow continuous operation and, for this reason also, has not found a very wide use, of so that the dry thermal printing of the carpet remains a problem presenting many difficulties. However, it has been found, in the services of the holder, that synthetic polyamides can be dyed and / or printed in depth,
more particularly high wool rugs, felts and looped carpets or those of the so-called tufted type, by using transfer papers or other flexible supports which carry at least one 1,4-bis- (alcoylamino) -anthraquinone of which the 'at least one of the alkyl residues is an isopropyl and which bears in positions 2 and 3 a hydrogen atom, preferably 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone.
Transfer papers of this type are prepared according to the usual methods, described for example in French patents Nos. 9,1223330, 1585119 and 2076149, using as coloring materials the known amino-anthraquinones which are 1,4-bis- (alkylamino ) -anthraquinone in which at least one of the alkyl residues is an isopropyl and which bear in positions 2 and 3 a hydrogen atom, for example 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) - anthraquinone.
These dyes can be used alone or in mixtures with dyes having a similar behavior in the temperature zone where the transfer takes place, that is to say at 120-220 ° C. As dyes which have a behavior similar to 1,4- bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone in this temperature range, there may be mentioned, for example, the I-amino-anthraquinones which carry an ethoxy group in position 2, methoxy or methyl, a hydrogen atom or, preferably,
a halogen atom, especially a chlorine atom and, in position 4, a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl.
The designs or patterns can be covered with a colorless thermoplastic film which makes the transfer papers hot adherent to the materials to be decorated; the film can be made for example with polyvinyl alcohol or a cellulose binder soluble in organic solvents, or with an acrylic resin, a polyamide, an acetate or a polyvinyl chloride, a polybutyral or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethylene or vinyl chloride.
With the transfer papers obtained with these dyes by offset printing, by gravure or flexogravure or by flat or rotary frame printing, it is possible to print or dye polyamide carpets like ordinary fabrics in discontinuous, on presses, or continuously, on calenders, the only difference with the prior art being that we put more dye on the paper to have the same shade, otherwise we get paler shades. The transfer time can also be slightly longer (30 to 100 seconds instead of 10 to 50) to allow the coloring material to penetrate to the core of the material to be printed.
Polyamides in fill, polyamide carpets, felts, rugs and other polyamide materials of a certain thickness dyed or printed according to the present process have, unlike those which are printed according to the known technique, prints (and dyes ) well penetrated. Despite the simplicity of the present process, the penetration of the coloring matters is at least as good as that which can be obtained by the process which operates in an apparatus for transferring under vacuum.
On the other hand, the deep penetration is done in the tone when we use mixtures and we observe little or no difference in shade (nor dichroism) between the top and the bottom of the hair, for example, which is complexion regularly, only the intensity varying with depth.
French patent No. 2075405 cited as prior art does not mention anywhere that the dyes used in the present invention have these good penetrating properties. In addition, it puts on the same footing the anthraquinones substituted in position 2 by a bromine atom, chlorine or a methoxy group, and those which are not substituted, whereas the inventors of the present application have only retained unsubstituted derivatives. Likewise, the French patent does not limit the alkyl groups to the branched monoalkyl radicals used in the present invention.
In addition, the patent in question cites only derivatives substituted in position 2 by a bromine or chlorine atom as soon as they bear an isopropylamine group.
In the following nonlimiting examples, the parts and percentages indicated are understood, unless otherwise indicated, by weight, and the temperatures in degrees Celsius. <I> Example 1: </I> An ink is prepared by dispersing 10 parts of carefully ground 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone with 7 parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in 83 parts of ethyl alcohol. By gravure printing a strip of baking paper 1.60 m wide is printed using this ink and an inking roller so as to obtain a blue design on a white background and it is dried.
A loop pile polyamide carpet is placed on the sheet of paper thus printed and the whole is passed over a metal plate heated to 200 C. A second unheated plate ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is 80 seconds. This gives a faithful transfer to the carpet.
Instead of a loop pile carpet, a low-pile polyamide (hexamethylene polyadipamide or s-caprolactam polymer) carpet can be used and excellent penetration of the dye which dyes the pile along its length is also obtained.
It is also possible to operate continuously on a calender by adjusting the speeds of the printed paper and the belt to be printed so that they remain in contact, for example, 50 seconds at 210 ° C. <I> Example 1: </I> The procedure is as in Example 1 but using an ink containing 4 parts of 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone, 4 parts of 1-amino-2-chloro- 4-hydroxy-anthraquinone and 8 parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in 84 parts of ethyl alcohol. This gives a purple pattern of excellent penetration.
To have an olive-colored design, just replace 1-amino-2-chloro-4-hydroxyanthraquinone with I-amino-2-methylanthraquinone.
<I> Example 3: </I> Orange and blue inks are prepared by dispersing, for the orange ink, 8 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone and, for the blue ink, 8 parts of 1,4 -bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone with, each time, 6 parts of ethylcellulose (N22) in 86 parts of ethyl alcohol. By gravure printing, using these inks and several ink rollers, a design is printed on a strip of paper and then dried.
The print thus obtained is then coated with a thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol using one or more rollers and a solution of 6 parts of polyvinyl alcohol in 100 parts of a mixture of 35 parts. water and 65 parts of ethyl or methyl alcohol, and dried.
To transfer the design from the strip of paper onto a polyamide mat or felt, the paper is placed in contact with the textile material and the whole is passed over a metal plate electrically heated to 200 C. A second unheated plate ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is 1 minute. This gives a faithful transfer of the design, the penetration of which is excellent.
Instead of a drawing, it is also possible to use only one ink and coat the entire surface of the strip of paper so as to have, after transfer to the carpet, no longer a drawing, but a solid dye in one. color well penetrated.
<I> Example 4: </I> On a rotary frame machine, a pattern is printed on a paper strip 1.60 m wide using aqueous inks containing, as binder (thickener), polyvinyl alcohol or locust bean gum and as colorants: a) 8 parts 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone (blue ink).
b) 7 parts of 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone and 2 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone (olive green ink). c) 6 parts of 1-amino-2-methoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone and 4 parts of 1,4-bis- (isopropylamino) -anthraquinone (purple ink).
d) 8 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone and 3 parts of 1-amino-2-chloro-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (brown-red ink). To effect the transfer of the design from the strip of paper onto a polyamide mat or felt, the paper is placed in contact with the material heated to 250 "C, the contact time being 50 seconds. A faithful transfer is thus obtained. drawing whose penetration is excellent.
