It is known that it is possible to print and dye synthetic polyamides by the technique known as dry thermal printing (technique described in French patents Nos. 1223330 and 1585119, for example using sublimable dyes, in particular of i -amino-2-methoxy-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (German patent N "1635382 and French N" 2180814, article by
Holland and Litherland, JSDC, 87 (1971), No. 12, pages 488-495) or 1-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinone (article mentioned above and article by Fox and Parsons, JSDC, 89 (1973) No. 12 . pages 474-485).
But one of the major drawbacks of this way of proceeding is the low penetration of the coloring matter into the material to be dyed (or printed); the coloring matters remain on the surface, so that if this technique is applied to materials of a certain thickness.
like carpets for example (materials which it is difficult to print and for which this technique has real advantages) one comes up against the difficulty of making the dyes penetrate into the material deep enough so that, under the superficial impression, the inside of the material does not remain whitened and that, in the case of carpets for example, the pile is colored over its entire length and not only at its upper part.
This drawback has been overcome by using complicated equipment, which allows the transfer of the coloring matters under vacuum. This equipment, apart from being more complex than that which is usually used in thermo-printing, does not allow continuous operation and, for this reason also, has not found a very wide use. so that the dry thermal printing of the carpet remains a problem with many difficulties.
Now it has been found. and it is one of the objects of the present invention, that synthetic polyamides, more particularly high wool rugs, felts and looped carpets or those of the so-called tufted type, can be dyed and, ior printed in depth, by using transfer papers or other flexible supports which carry at least one 1-aminoanthraquinone having in position 2 a methyl group or, preferably. a halogen atom, especially a chlorine atom, and in position 4 a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl.
In transfer tests carried out at 204 C for 40 seconds, on a satin-filament of polyamide 6,6, fixed and bleached, weighing 58 g, m2 and having approximately 77 threads in one direction and 56 in the other, in cm, while 1-amino-2-methoxy-4-hydroxy- and I-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinones only cross 4 layers of this tissue, I-amino-2-chloro-4hydroxyanthraquinone crosses 6. This difference in penetration in the polyamide between dye vapors with such similar structures is really surprising.
The transfer papers of this type, which are also the subject of the present invention, are prepared according to the usual methods, that is to say by offset printing, by gravure or flexogravure or by frame printing, described, for example. . in French patents N 1223330, N "1585119 and N" 2076149 using known aminoanthraquinones as coloring materials, preferably 1 -amino-2-methylanthraquinone or 1-amino-2-chloro-4-hydroxyanthraquinone.
With the transfer papers thus obtained it is possible to print or dye polyamide carpets as well as ordinary discontinuous fabrics. on presses, or continuously, on calenders, the only difference with the prior art being that we put more dye on the paper to have the same shade, otherwise we obtain paler shades. The transfer time can also be slightly longer (30 to 100 seconds, for example, instead of 10 to 50) to allow the coloring material to penetrate to the core of the material to be printed.
Polyamides in fluff. polyamide rugs, felts, rugs and other polyamide textile materials of a certain thickness dyed or printed according to the present process have, unlike those which are printed according to the known technique, well-penetrated prints (and dyes).
Despite the simplicity of the present process, the penetration of the coloring matters is at least as good as that which can be obtained by the process which operates in an apparatus for transferring under vacuum.
In the following nonlimiting examples. the parts and percentages indicated are understood, unless otherwise specified, by weight, and the temperatures in degrees Celsius.
Example 1.
An ink is prepared by dispersing 10 parts of carefully ground 1-amino-2-chloro-4-hydroxyanthraquinone with 7 parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in 83 parts of ethyl alcohol.
By gravure printing a strip of parchment paper 1.60 m wide is printed using this ink and an inking roller so as to obtain a red design on a white background and it is dried.
A loop pile of polyamide is placed on the sheet of paper thus printed and the whole is passed over a metal plate heated to 200 C. A second unheated plate ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is 80 seconds.
This gives a faithful transfer to the carpet.
Instead of loop pile carpet. low-pile polyamide (hexamethylene polyadipamide or acaprolactam polymer) mat can be used and excellent penetration of the dye which dyes the pile along its entire length is also obtained.
It is also possible to operate continuously on a calender by adjusting the speeds of the printed paper and the belt to be printed so that they remain in contact, for example, 50 seconds at 210 C.
Excellent penetration is also obtained by heating at 195 ° C. for 3 minutes or at 170 ° C. for 4 minutes. Instead of a support printed in one color, it is also possible to use a multicolored support, printed with l-amino-2chloro-4-hydroxyanthraquinone and one or more other dyes having the same behavior between 150 and 250 C, that is, that is, the quantity of which vaporized or sublimated in a given time and at a given temperature is similar.
This identity of behavior makes it possible to use inks containing a mixture of dyes, without observing any difference in shade between the top and the bottom of the pile; only the intensity varies with depth.
Example 2.
The procedure is as in Example I but using an ink containing 8 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone and 8 parts of ethylcellulose (N7) in 84 parts of ethyl alcohol.
An orange pattern of excellent penetration is then obtained.
Example 3.
Orange and red inks are prepared by dispersing, for the orange ink, 8 parts of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone and, for the red ink, 8 parts of a mixture of equal parts of 1 amino-4-hydroxy- 2-chloroanthraquinone and 1-amino-2-methyl-anthraquinone with 6 parts of ethylcellulose (N22) in 86 parts of ethyl alcohol. By rotogravure printing, using its inks and two ink rollers, a design is printed on a strip of paper and then dried.
The paper is then coated over its entire width with a thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol using one or more rolls and a 6 part solution of polyvinyl alcohol in 100 parts of a 35 part mixture. water and 65 parts of ethyl or methyl alcohol, and dried.
To transfer the design from the strip of paper to a mat or polyamide felt. the paper is placed in contact with the textile material and the whole is passed over a metal plate electrically heated to 200 C. A second unheated plate ensures regular contact. The hot contact time is 1 minute. A faithful transfer of the design is thus obtained, the penetration of which is excellent.
Instead of a drawing, it is also possible to use only one ink and coat the entire surface of the strip of paper so as to have, after transfer to the carpet, no longer a drawing, but a solid dye in one. color well penetrated.
