Device for connecting a device with a thin sheet metal housing
with a pipe connection with two coaxial pipes
The present invention relates to a device for connecting an appliance, such as a gas meter, a pressure regulator, a pressure reducer, a filter, etc., having a thin sheet housing, with an external pipe connection. . Generally, the pipe connectors known for these devices comprise a branch connected to the device, which is formed by two concentric pipes having their free ends in the same plane or substantially in the same plane.
To connect such an external pipe connector to a device whose housing is made of thin sheet metal, a known device consists essentially of an intermediate connecting piece comprising two coaxial tubes, arranged inside one another for the fluid inlet and outlet, the outer tube being fixed to the device by one of its ends and the inner tube being connected to the outer tube by crossbars. In another known device, the inner tube has been removed from the connecting piece by inserting the internal tubing of the outer pipe connector and the tubing placed inside the device and connected for example into the other. to the measuring device in the case of a gas meter.
Such connecting devices are relatively expensive since they require an intermediate connecting piece between the pipe connector and the device. In addition, the sealed attachment of this connecting piece to the housing of the device, generally produced by tin soldering, has serious drawbacks when the device is suspended from the connection of the external pipe.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by providing a connecting device in which the intermediate connecting piece is omitted and, therefore, the drawbacks arising from the tin soldering thereof, are eliminated.
The device according to the invention is intended for the connection of an apparatus having a thin sheet metal casing with an external pipe connector, the branch of which to be connected with the apparatus is constituted by two pipes arranged coaxially one inside the other and having a single opening formed in said housing and the edge of which is connected with the outer tubing, while the inner tubing of the connector is connected to an inner pipe of the device which is coaxial with said opening - and fixed to the housing, this interior pipe being provided with a seal at its end connected to the interior pipe of the connector.
According to the invention, this device is characterized in that the single opening of the housing has a neck produced by stamping, and in that it comprises a nut for tightening the connector having an internal rim placed around this neck at the outside thereof, this nut being held by a part of the neck folded down by crimping above this rim or by a washer electrically welded to the upper part of the neck, said folded-down part of the neck or said washer being arranged so as to prevent any axial displacement of said nut, while allowing it to rotate freely about its axis, a seal being disposed between the folded-down portion of the neck or the welded washer and the adjacent end of the outer tubing of the connector.
This connection device is applicable to any device through which a fluid passes, whatever its function (measurement, expansion, filtering, etc.).
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a cross section of a connection device according to a first embodiment of the invention, this device connecting a gas meter with a pipe connector and comprising a nut fixed by a folded-back part of the neck of the meter housing.
The- fig. 2 shows a cross section and by thread of a connecting device, according to a second embodiment of the invention, in which the nut is fixed by a washer electrically welded to the upper part of the neck.
Fig. 3 shows the location of the welding electrodes during the welding operation.
In fig. 1, there is shown, in broken lines, a connector 1 integral with inlet and outlet pipes, in the form of a T, the branch of which to be connected to the device is formed by two concentric pipes la and lb. The fluid arriving in the direction of arrow fj, enters through the space between the two pipes la and lb inside the device and leaves it through the pipe lb following arrow f ,. 2 designates the housing of the device, made of thin sheet metal. This housing comprises a stamped neck 2a around which a nut 3 is placed. This nut is provided with an internal rim 3a which rests on a rounded part of the neck 2a, as well as a groove 3b above this rim and of which the diameter is slightly larger than the internal diameter of the thread of the thread of said nut.
In this first embodiment of the invention, the nut 3 is fixed to the stamped neck 2a by a part 2b of this neck which is folded over the inner rim 3a of the nut 3 so as to retain the latter. ci in the axial direction, while leaving sufficient play to allow it to rotate freely around its axis. The outside diameter of the folded-over part 2b is substantially equal to the inside diameter of the thread of the thread of the nut 3. A seal 4 of annular shape and having an inside diameter substantially equal to the inside diameter of the pipe 1a of the connector 1 and a diameter outside slightly larger than the inside diameter of the thread of the thread of the nut 3, is placed over the folded part 2b of the neck 2a and kept concentrically inside the groove of the nut 3.
This gasket is made of a relatively hard material such as fiber, asbestos, etc., and preferably provided with a metal reinforcement on both sides. It can also be made of a ductile metal such as red copper.
The meter comprises a central tube 5 arranged coaxially with the nut 3 and provided with a seal 6 at its end situated in the opening of the housing.
This seal is provided with a slot 6a so as to allow the introduction of this seal on the end of the pipe 5. As shown, it comprises, on its periphery, inside and outside, two grooves circular 6b so as to avoid, during the assembly of the connector 1 on the meter, that iI occurs swelling which would reduce the fluid passage sections. The gasket 6 is made of a flexible material such as rubber, plastic, etc. I1 ends in a plane located slightly above the plane of the seal 4, so as to exert a certain stress on the pipe 1b of the connector 1 when the nut 3 is tightened.
The tubing 5 is fixed to the housing 2 by means of a plate 7 which can serve as a deflector. This plate is welded to the housing, at 8, preferably electrically.
Fig. 2 shows part of the second embodiment of the invention. In this figure, 11 denotes the housing comprising a conical neck 11a produced by stamping, 12 denotes the nut provided with an inner rim 12a. This device comprises a washer 13 whose bore 13a has a conical shape which allows it to be kept at a small distance above the rim 12a of the nut as soon as it comes into contact with the adjacent part of the neck 11a. .
The washer 13 is tightly fixed by electric welding to the neck on its periphery at 14.
A seal 4 is placed on the washer 13.
Fig. 3 shows the two electrodes, lower and upper, 15 and 16, necessary for this welding operation. The lower electrode 15 has a conical part 15a which can fit inside the neck 11a, while the upper electrode 15 has an annular part 16a pressing on the washer 13 so as to join the faces to be welded with a High pressure.
By screwing the nut 3 (respectively 12) on the external thread of the tubing 1a of the connector 1, the end of the tubing lb comes into contact with the seal 6 before the tubing comes into contact with the seal 4. From this In fact, the seal 6 is sufficiently compressed and ensures the seal between the inlet and outlet pipes. While continuing to tighten the nut 3 (respectively 12), the seal 4 is compressed in turn, and provides sealing towards the outside. At the same time, the folded-back part 2b (respectively the washer 13) of the neck of the housing is tightly clamped between the seal 4 and the inner rim of the nut. It can be seen that, under these conditions, the device is suspended from connection 1, directly by its housing, without the intermediary of parts welded with tin.
In addition, this connection device makes it possible to fix the device in any angular position, relative to the pipe connection, and makes it possible to reduce the size of the device following the elimination of the intermediate connecting piece. between the pipe fitting and the internal tubing of the device.
In variants, the gasket 6 could be located below the gasket 4, or the two gaskets could be located in the same plane provided that the internal pipe 1b of the connector 1 is of a corresponding length, with respect to the pipe la .
