Bowden cable The invention is concerned with a Bowden cable which has a flexible outer sleeve and a flexible inner cable which can be moved through it. Such trains are used for many purposes, including braking or other control devices on bicycles and motor vehicles, to name just two examples.
With such a Bowden cable, it is common that the ends of the sleeve or the hose are attached to fixed existing parts, while the ends of the inner cable are attached to moving parts :; In certain cases, the inner cable can be attached to a fixed part and the end of the hose to a movable part, namely at one or both ends of the hose, as it corresponds to the respective requirements.
The subject of the invention is thus a Bowden train with a flexible outer hose and an inner cable passed through this hose and hanging out of its ends, characterized in that at least one end of the hose has a terminating piece made up of a pierced body and a sealing member exists, which is fitted into the bore in such a way that it surrounds the hose and resiliently presses against the inner cable and thus lies tightly against the latter.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sealing member consists of a sleeve part which surrounds and seals the sleeve, and a protruding lip part of smaller diameter which includes the inner cable behind the hose end.
The inner cable, which can consist of twisted metal wires, is preferably provided according to another embodiment of the invention with a synthetic plastic coating., Which. protects the metal and gives the inner cable a smooth outer surface that slides easily through the hose and lip of the sealing member while at the same time gaining a good sealing connection with the latter.
An embodiment of the invention is explained with reference to the drawing, the single figure of which shows a cross section through a terminating piece which is provided at one end of a Bowden cable of the type described and is used to connect the hose end to a bracket or another fixed point.
The control cable; which is designated in its entirety by 1, consists of a flexible outer tube 2 which - as shown - is designed as a tight steel round wire spiral 3, although wire or metal strips with a non-circular cross-section can also be used. The wire 3 is covered with a layer or a coating 4, which can best hen of suitable plastic material, nylon is preferably used. This plastic sheath can be pressed onto the previously wound wire 3 or also attached to it before the wire itself is wound, as is known.
The latter manufacturing method offers the advantage that the plastic material protects the wire 3 against rust or corrosion both inside and outside the hose.
A flexible inner cable 5, which can consist of twisted steel wires and which is covered with a sheath 6, extends slidingly through the hose 2. This sheath is made of suitable plastic material, nylon being preferred. The sheath can be applied to the cable 5 by being pressed onto the steel cable, or it can be designed as a hose, a piece of which over the cable pulled and connected to the latter with the application of heat and pressure or in some other way.
The sheath 6 serves a number of important purposes. Apart from the protection against rust, it covers the twisted steel wire ropes and gives them a smooth surface so that they slide easily through the sleeve 1 and the end piece, which is still to be described, with little friction and without the use of a lubricant.
It also enables good interaction with the sealing members provided in the end fitting and minimizes the difficulties caused by the freezing of water inside the sleeve 2 and the entry of dirt into the latter.
The terminating piece consists of a body 7, which is preferably made of metal, although other materials could also be used. In the device shown, the body 7 is fitted into a hole in a bracket 8 and can be verbun with the sem by welding or in some other way. The bracket 8 is fastened by means of a bolt or in some other way to a fixed member 9 which can be part of the chassis of a motor vehicle when the cable is used as a brake cable.
The body 7 is provided with a bore 10 which has an opening 11 with a redu ed diameter at one end. The opening 11 is formed by the flange 12 of the part 7.
In the bore 10, a sealing member 13 is fitted. This includes a cylindrical sleeve part 14 which is tightly clamped between the cable hose 2 and the body 7. The sealing member continues in one piece in a protruding lip 15, the inner and outer diameter of which is smaller than the sleeve part 14 to which it is connected via part 16. This part is inserted between the end of the hose 2 and the flange 12 of the body 7.
As can be seen from the drawing, the lip 15 is conical on the outside as well as on the inside, the outer cone being larger than the inner one, so that the thickness of the lip 15 approaches the tip where it encompasses the sleeve 6 of the cable 5, decreases. The flange 12 of the body protrudes beyond the lip and protects it, but only engages at its inner end. The lip 15 creates a seal against the sleeve 6 of the inner cable 5, which is slid tend to be guided on her when actuated.
The sealing member 13 is made entirely of a resilient synthetic plastic material, and nylon is preferably used for this. The elasticity of such a material ensures that the lip 15 presses against the sheath 6 of the inner cable 5, and very largely prevents dirt or moisture from penetrating the hose 2 or being dragged in by the movement of the inner cable.
A similar termination fitting can be attached to the other end of the cable. Although nylon has been designated as the preferred material for the sheaths 4 and 6 of the hose 2 and the inner cable 5 as well as the sealing member 13, suitable synthetic plastic material can also be used for some or all of the parts mentioned. These substances include everyone that is derived from polytetrafluoroethylene and is known under the name Fluon (registered trademark) or Teflon (registered trademark).
