en traversant ladite paroi par une ouverture. circulaire 39 de diamètre supérieur à celui de la tige du mandrin mais inférieur à celui de l'évidement axial du tube coulé à obtenir. Dans sa partie située dans le récipient, cette tige est protégée par un revêtement tubulaire d'amiante 34 ;
Additional patent subordinate to main patent NO 330915 Device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal The main patent No 330915, of December 12, 1955, relates to a device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal,
comprising a receptacle arranged to receive liquid metal through its open upper part and having a vertical front wall provided at its lower part with an opening communicating with an open shell with a horizontal axis, said shell being made of a highly conductive material of the heat,
means simultaneously producing the internal cooling of said shell and the cooling of the metal which leaves said shell, and means for ensuring the driving and horizontal guidance of said metal leaving the shell, so that the latter has a flat bottom surface,
charac terized in that the anterior wall of the container and the posterior wall of the shell have planar faces in close contact with each other, the shell being provided with a portion forming a projection on its posterior wall and penetrating into a part of said front wall of the container, so as to form a tight seal around the opening made in said front wall,
one of said parts cooperating with one another to form a tight seal being made of a refractory material of low thermal conductivity and easily deformable by crushing, while the other is made of metal.
According to a particular embodiment of this device, the shell comprises, on its rear face, a step, which penetrates into the vertical face of the container, which is made of a material such as asbestos, along a continuous line identical to the one. perimeter of the outlet section of the shell. The device thus formed makes it possible to obtain, by continuous casting, without,
risks of snagging due to metal leaks between the container and the shell, solid ingots, of medium or great length, in profiles of any practically usable dimensions and having a generally poly gonal or rounded cross section.
The present invention relates to a device for the continuous casting of tubes which may have any dimensions and a rectangular or round section, for example.
The device according to the invention, which has the basic characteristics of the main patent recalled above, is characterized in that the front wall of the container is traversed, in the axial zone of the opening of the shell, by a mandrel which extends: through:
the receptacle in which it is protected by a heat-insulating coating and the head of which, which has a slight conicity and a maximum cross section corresponding to the internal section of the tube to be obtained, protrudes inside the shell,
one or more communication passages being formed through said front wall of the container, between the mandrel and the perimeter of the internal section of the shell.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings represent, by way of example, respectively three embodiments of the device according to the invention, in vertical section through a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the shell.
The device shown in FIG. 1, comprises a container 1 intended to receive the molten metal 2, this container comprising side walls.
and the rear metal 3 lined with an internal asbestos coating 4 and a vertical front wall 5 consisting of a very thick asbestos plate, the rear wall 3 comprising a reinforced lower part 6.
A shell 7, for example metallic or graphite, comprising an internal channel 8 communicating, on the one hand, with a pressurized water inlet 9 and, on the other hand, with a multitude of orifices of spray 10 opening obliquely on the front face of the shell, is applied against the outer face of the front wall 5 of the container.
This shell is provided, on its rear face, with a step 11 which, penetrating into the wall 5, provides a seal between the latter and the shell.
The part 12 of the wall 5 limited by the perimeter of the step 11 is pierced with an opening through which passes a mandrel 13, for example metallic or graphite, which passes through the container and the reinforced rear wall 6 of the latter. . In its part located in the container, said man drin is externally protected by an asbestos coating 14.
This mandrel comprises, at its front end, a head 15 having a diameter greater than that of the mandrel body and which protrudes. in front of part 12 of wall 5, this head having a slight taper and being provided, on its pos ter face, with a step 16, which, like the step. 11 of the shell, penetrates into the external face of said part 12.
In addition, the mandrel, 13 comprises an axial recess 17 which is connected to the rear part of the mandrel, not shown, with a source of pressurized water and which communicates on the other hand with a multitude of spray orifices. 18 opening obliquely to the anterior part of the head 15.
Openings 19 are formed in the portion 12 of the front wall 5 of the container, around the head 15 of the mandrel 13, to provide communication between the container and the shell.
Finally, a grid 20, supported on the walls. rear and front 5 of the container, by means of wedges 21 and 22, ensure the internal stiffening of the container against the pressure exerted on the wall 5 by the shell 7 and the mandrel head 15.
The molten metal, poured into the container 1, arrives through the openings 19 in the shell 7 and begins to solidify in contact with the internal wall of the shell and the mandrel head 15, forming a tube 23.
From this start of solidification, a shrinkage of the metal takes place and the tube therefore ceases to be in contact on its outer perimeter with the shell 7.
To reduce the risks of the tube breaking at this location, due to the fragility of the insufficiently solidified metal, the shell 7 is made as short as possible,
so that the cooling effect of the fluid escaping through the ori fices 10 is felt as far as the interior of the shell and there minimizes the size of the volume 24 of liquid metal.
In addition, this withdrawal of the metal causes a shrinking of the interior of the tube on the head 15 of the mandrel. It is to avoid the effect of this hooping, which would also tend to cause a rupture of the tube, that the head 15 is given the thin taper which was discussed above.
In the device shown in FIG. 2, we find most of the elements of the previous example, the identical elements being designated by the same references. As in the first example, the shell 7 has a step 11 and the mandrel 13 has an enlarged head 15, but the mandrel does not have a step.
On the other hand, the part of the wall 5 which is in FIG. 1, around the mandrel, is deleted, the mandrel passing through said wall by a circular opening 19 which forms, around the mandrel, a continuous annular passage. It is in fact possible to allow the liquid metal to come freely to strike the rear of the head of the mandrel without it being necessary to ensure the sealing in this region in a particular manner.
The operation of this device is exactly the same as that forming the subject of FIG. 1. In the variant shown in FIG. 3 and in which the same elements are designated by the same references as in the previous figures, the mandrel comprises a metal rod 33 which passes through the container 1 and the reinforced rear part 6 of the latter and which extends in front of the front wall 5 in asbestos,
by crossing said wall through an opening. circular 39 of greater diameter than that of the shank of the mandrel but less than that of the axial recess of the cast tube to be obtained. In its part located in the container, this rod is protected by a tubular asbestos coating 34;
it comprises, at its front end, an enlarged head 35 having a maximum diameter substantially equal to or slightly greater than that of said axial recess and a taper such that its section decreases on the side facing forward. An asbestos washer 38 is applied to the rear part of the head 35, the diameter of this washer being substantially equal to that of the opening 39.
The whole of the rod 33 with its head 35, the tubular coating 34 and the washer 38 is held in place by a nut 40 which is screwed onto the rear part of the rod 33, threaded for this purpose.
During casting, the molten metal, for example an anti-friction alloy such as an aluminum-tin alloy with 6 or 20% tin, is poured into the vessel 1 from which it escapes through the opening. 39 by passing through the shell 7 where it solidifies., By forming the tube 23 which can be made into anti-friction rings or bearings for bearing.
The washer 38 prevents the metal, at the start of casting, from cooling prematurely on contact with the face. back of head 35.
It will be understood that the head 35 can have any desired cross section other than a circular section, corresponding to the cross section of the recess which it is desired to obtain inside the cast tube. In the example of FIG. 3, the mandrel, is not cooled and the head 35 is consequently made of graphite.
However, this head could also be made of metal, for example of steel and the mandrel would then be provided with cooling channels similar to those provided in the examples of FIGS. 1 and 2.
