Device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal The present invention relates to a positive device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal, in particular that of aluminum, magnesium or an alloy. This device makes it possible to obtain ingots of medium or great length, in profiles of all dimensions, rectangular or round in appearance, in particular bars of small cross section, capable of being wound on a drum placed at the side. continuation of the ingot evacuation bench.
It has already been proposed to proceed with the continuous casting of a metal from a vertical receptacle arranged to receive liquid metal and which comprises at its lower part a lateral opening on which is applied an open shell provided with means of energetic cooling which at the same time cool and solidify the metal flowing from the container. Means are provided to ensure the driving and horizontal guiding of the solidified metal leaving the shell, giving a flat lower surface to said metal.
Such a device would, in principle, allow the horizontal continuous casting of aluminum to be carried out. But no provision is made there to ensure the seal between the metal shell and the refractory duct of the same section which precedes it. However, the surface of separation of these two elements is a ring located in a vertical plane, where the liquid aluminum tends to infiltrate to form a solid germ capable of causing clashes which can lead to the breaking of the ingot in formation.
Practically, for lack, in particular, of sufficient sealing means, no horizontal continuous casting of aluminum could be carried out with such a device.
Another device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal has been proposed. It consists of a casting drum with an intermediate tank adjustable in position and a casting channel. But it is complicated and delicate.
The object of the present invention is to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks.
The device for the horizontal continuous casting of a metal, according to the present invention, comprises a container designed to receive liquid metal through its open upper part and having a vertical front wall provided at its lower part with an opening. communicating with an open shell with a horizontal axis, said shell being made of a material which is a strong conductor of heat, means simultaneously producing the internal cooling of said shell and the cooling of the metal which leaves said shell,
and means for ensuring the driving and horizontal guiding of said metal exiting the shell, so that the latter has a flat lower surface.
It is characterized in that the anterior wall of the container and the posterior wall of the shell have planar faces in close contact with each other, the shell being provided with a portion forming a projection on its posterior wall and penetrating into a part of said front wall of the container, so as to form a tight seal around the opening made in said front wall,
one of said parts cooperating with each other to form a tight seal being made of a refractory material of low thermal conductivity and easily deformable by crushing, while the other is made of metal. The appended drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention, intended for the continuous casting of aluminum in the form of a rectangular ingot.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of part of this embodiment; fig. 2 is a front view of this part; fig. 3 is an overall elevational view of this embodiment; fig. 4 is a plan view; fig. 5 is an enlarged scale view of the part of the device -represented in FIG. 1, showing how the metal behaves in the shell; fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a variant.
As shown in FIG. 1, the part of the continuous aluminum casting device comprises a receptacle 1, the opening of which is located under a pouring spout 2. An internal asbestos coating 3 communicates via an opening 4 formed in the vertical front wall 5, with an aluminum shell 6, internally cooled by a stream of water which arrives at 7 and pierced with a multitude of spray holes 8.
The seal between the wall 5 and the shell is provided by a step 9 which penetrates into the front face of the wall 5; this sealing is reinforced by a support grid 10 supported on the walls 3 and 5 by means of wedges 11, 12.
The metal 13 comes out of the shell at 14 and first passes over a flat surface 15 (fig. 3) and between two U-shaped walls 16 (fig. 4), which gives it time to cool sufficiently. and to take on the appearance of a straight bar before being driven on a roller raceway 17. This prevents buckling of the lower surface of the ingot and, in extreme cases, its breaking.
The ingot is driven by means of a tractor plug 18 of the same section as the ingot to be cast; hollowed out in its center in a dovetail 19. This plug, originally placed opposite the orifice 4, receives the metal which enters the dovetail 19 where it solidifies and is moved on the rollers 17 by any known means and not shown, thus causing the ingot gradually formed.
It will be noted that the opening 4 is located below the axis 20 of the shell, this for the following reason In the shell, the solidification of the liquid metal begins along the cold inner wall thereof even before the region from the water outlet. However, the annular solid bead thus formed has a tendency, due to the shrinkage of the metal on solidification, to separate from the outer wall of the shell. However, this separation occurs earlier, that is, closer to the vertical asbestos plate, at the bottom than at the top, because at the bottom, the influence of the weight is felt and tends in pressing said bead on the bottom. Then the hot metal tends to rise upwards.
Consequently, the region where the solid bead is detached from the wall of the shell is presented obliquely with respect to the axis of the ingot. By lowering the level of opening 4, the hot metal is forced to pass through the bottom, which delays the solidification of the lower part of the metal.
Another drawback resides in that the newly solidified metal bead is fragile in itself and is detached from the wall, which risks initiating defects. In fact, we see (FIG. 5) the upper bead 21 and the lower bead 22 which are detached at 23 and 24 from the wall of the shell 6 during the driving of the ingot 14; the bonded metal, barely solidified, risks being melted again by the metal 13 which is still in the liquid state.
Such a drawback is remedied by shortening the take-off zone, therefore, as provided above, the length of the shell.
As a result of the phenomenon of calefaction and the formation of a steam sheath, the cooling water which spouts out of the shell 6 through the orifices 8 (fig. 1 and 2) would not come into sufficient contact with the ingot very hot (since still close to its melting point) which at the same time comes out of the shell.
It is therefore necessary to make the cooling water flow under sufficient pressure to break this steam duct. Any known means can be used for this purpose.
Finally, a dross 25, consisting essentially of alumina, forms on the surface of the liquid aluminum contained in the container. This grime must be prevented from stagnating there, because it would then risk being eliminated in spurts through the orifice of the asbestos wall and sporadically polluting the ingot. This is achieved by skimming it or filtering the metal.
In the variant of FIG. 6, the container 1 provided with an internal coating 3 of asbestos for example, has its front metal wall 5 through which a tube 4 'of asbestos passes. The shell 6, cooled by a stream of water arriving at 7 and pierced with spray holes 8, is applied in a sealed manner by a solid circular surface 8 'against the front wall 5 of the container 1 The bottom of the shell 8 'has a concave shape 26 in which is wedged an asbestos disc 27. The tube 4' passes through the wall 3-5 of the container, the bottom 8'-26 of the shell and the disc. asbestos 27. This device operates like that shown in FIGS. 1 to 5.
Thanks to the devices described above, the continuous casting carried out makes it possible to obtain, without any complicated equipment, profiles without scratches or tears, the perfection of the seal preventing the formation of any solid metal germ at any dangerous point. for the good condition of the cast products.
We can also flow faster because we bring more water effectively acting and we can thus cool a greater quantity of metal passing in a given time. At the same time, an improvement in the productivity and the quality of the cast product is obtained. In addition, the surface appearances are better and the bars straighter than those obtained with other known devices.
