<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 1 est une coupe verticale dans un'panier pour l'alimentation d'une lingotière pour la coulée continue d'acier;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to a vessel for casting steel, the bottom of which is provided with a nozzle for controlling the flow.
Such containers are used either as a ladle for filling ingot molds in steelworks, or as an intermediate reservoir, often called a "basket" in French or "tundish" in English, between a casting ladle and an ingot mold. continuous casting at the lower part from which an ingot is extracted. In the latter case, the basket sometimes has several control nozzles each letting a steel jet escape into a different mold. In the case of a basket with one or more nozzles or a pouring ladle, the stopping of the jet can be obtained by blocking the inlet of the nozzle with a plug sometimes called a stopper rod.
Before the steel is introduced into such a container, the latter is preheated inside and out to a temperature slightly below the melting point of the metal to be introduced therein. However, when the superheating of the metal above its melting point is low and when the nozzle diameter is also small to be able to achieve a low flow rate, serious difficulties often arise during casting. This is due to the fact that the lower part of the. nozzle is generally less heated than the rest and cools more quickly after preheating. Sometimes metal candles form at the outlet of the nozzle, which has the effect of deforming and deflecting the metal jet and sometimes causing the nozzle to clog.
Note that when the obstruction of a flow control nozzle becomes
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
produced, it cannot be eliminated by directing a jet of oxygen to it because the oxide which results from the combustion of the metal corrodes the nozzle which has the effect of modifying the section of the lower part of it and by consequently the flow of the metal to be poured later.
The present invention relates to a container of the aforementioned type which does not have these drawbacks.
To this end, in the container according to the invention, the lower face of said nozzle is set back relative to the lower face of said bottom.
In this way, the heat loss through the lower end of the nozzle is slower and the metal flowing through the nozzle can more easily compensate for this heat loss to a sufficient extent so that an obstruction does not occur. .
However, the desired result is obtained much more easily by interposing between the underside of the control nozzle and the underside of the bottom of the receptacle a part, hereinafter referred to as an "insert", having below the orifice of the container. outlet of the nozzle, a hole a little larger than this orifice which allows the free passage of the steel jet.
This part then puts the lower end of the nozzle better sheltered from drafts and radiates towards it part of the heat which it receives from the bottom and the steel jet.
Preferably, the face of the aforementioned insert located opposite the lower end of the control nozzle has the shape of a hemisphere, the center of curvature of which coincides with the center of the outlet orifice. the nozzle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This arrangement has the effect of concentrating a large part of the nozzle on the center of the outlet orifice. heat radiated upwards by the intermediate piece.
According to another feature of the container according to the invention having the effect of better preheating the control nozzle and especially its lower end, this nozzle is mounted in a support arranged in a preheating chamber formed in the bottom of the container.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the aforesaid preheating chamber communicates with the space between the control nozzle and the aforesaid insert.
Although the control nozzle of the container according to the invention can at the same time play the role of a stop nozzle by serving as a seat for a stopper rod, it is however advantageously arranged below another nozzle which only serves as a seat. to allow the jet to stop without adjusting the flow rate.
In this case, the two nozzles are preferably mounted in the same support with high heat conductivity.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent schematically, and by way of example only, three embodiments of a casting vessel according to FIG. invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a basket for feeding an ingot mold for the continuous casting of steel;
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sections through the bottom of two steel mill ladles.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In Figure 1, we see a basket 2 comprising a metal tank 3, the interior of which is lined with a layer of refractory material 4. Below the tank, a preheating chamber 5 has been provided for a part 6 in which there is mounted a nozzle 7 for determining the flow rate of a steel jet flowing through it under a given ferrostatic pressure. The preheating chamber 5 is surrounded by a layer of refractory material 8 inside a metal wall 9. The entire bottom of the refractory layer 4, the bottom of the tank 3, the refractory layer 8 and the metal wall 9 must be considered as constituting the back of the basket 2.
The heating of the preheating chamber 5 is carried out for example by the gases formed at the outlet of a burner 10 and escaping through a pipe 11.
It can be seen in Figure 1 that the underside 12 of the test nozzle? is substantially set back with respect to the lower face 13 of the bottom of the basket. It therefore cools much less easily than if it were flush with the plane of the latter or protruding from it.
In addition, between the faces 12 and 13, an intermediate piece 14 is interposed which has, below the outlet orifice of the nozzle 7, a hole 15 which is slightly larger than this orifice. In practice, this hole is given the smallest possible cross section, provided that it allows the free passage of the steel jet falling from the nozzle. Part 14 radiates to it part of the heat that it receives. Its upper face 16 has the shape of a hemisphere, the center of which is merged with the center of the outlet orifice of the nozzle in order to concentrate as much as possible at this point the heat radiated upwards by the part. insert 14.
The lower face 17 of this part is itself set back relative to the lower face 13 of the back of the basket
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in order to reduce its heat loss down. This lower face 17 is concave.
The hole 15 has a longitudinal section which increases downwards in order to facilitate the passage of the steel jet
While basket 2 is preheating, it is possible to
EMI5.1
Preheating the lower end 12 of the control nozzle by causing heating gases to enter the space 18 between this nozzle and the intermediate piece 14. This communication is established in the upper part. of this space by channels 19 regularly distributed around the axis of the nozzle .. The gas jets which come out lick the face 12 and escape through the hole 15.
The part 6 supporting the. control nozzle 7 is made of a material having good heat conductivity in order to facilitate the heating of this nozzle from the preheating chamber 5. This material must also have good mechanical resistance to hot and cold, good resistance to thermal shock, a low coefficient of expansion and good resistance to oxidation during heating. Carborandum et la. plumbagine are very suitable for this purpose.
The basket shown in Figure 1 comprises a autr nozzle 20 above the. flow control nozzle. This other nozzle serves as a seat for a buffer 21 to stop the flow of steel if necessary. This pad 21 must of course be preheated together with the basket 2 before the steel is poured into it.
The nozzle 21, the cross section of which is considerably larger than that of the nozzle 7, is also supported by the part 6 with high heat conductivity.
In Figure 2, a part of the bottom has been shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a ladle in which the flow control nozzle 7 serves at the same time as a stop nozzle. For this purpose, the upper end of its channel used to determine the flow rate is flared so that it can easily serve as a seat for the buffer 21. The lower face 17 of the spacer 14 is flat instead of being concave but it is also set back relative to the lower face 13 of the bottom. No preheating pocket has been formed therein, the preheating of the pocket then being carried out from the inside and the outside.
However, the support 6 of the nozzle is made of a material with high heat conductivity in order to facilitate the heating of the lower end of the control nozzle 7.
A. Figure 3, there is shown a part of the bottom of another casting ladle without a preheating chamber, for which the nozzle 7 for controlling and stopping the steel jet is mounted with its support 6 at the above the bottom of this pocket. This support also serves to hold the spacer 14 well above the lower face 13 of the pocket.
The lower face 17 of this intermediate piece is concave.
It has the shape of a spherical cap.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments represented and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, without departing from the scope of the present invention, provided that such modifications are not inconsistent with the object of each of the following claims.
