B. in Frage: Luftsauerstoff, Calcium- hypochlorit, Brom, Chloranil, N-Bromsuccinimid, Benzoylperoxyd, verdünnte Salpetersäure, Bleitetra acetat, Mennige, u. a. m.

R4 is an optionally further substituted, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical which is free of water-solubilizing groups, one V is oxygen or the imino group and the other V is the imino group, and in which R 1 and R 2 can be identical or different from one another.
In Swiss Patent No. 346635, water-insoluble styryl dyes are described which dye synthetic fibers in greenish yellow to neutral yellow brilliant shades.
The new water-insoluble styryl dyes, which are prepared by the process according to the present invention, have an absorption maximum that is strongly shifted towards longer wavelengths compared to the dyes of Swiss Patent No. 346635, which have an absorption maximum at about 435 nm and dye synthetic fibers in yellow-red to red-violet tones.
It is one of the purposes of the present inven tion to expand the number of technically common water-insoluble dyes for dyeing artificial fibers and masses with a view to the deeper color nuances. This is because it is generally known that there are only a very limited number of water-insoluble dyes on the market which, together with high color strength, also have good fastness properties.
Rather, those dyes which are distinguished by their color strength are mostly not very fast, while those dyes which have very good fastness properties are mostly weak in color.
The dyes according to the invention combine great brilliance and color strength with good coloring properties in an individual. The process for the preparation of the new water-insoluble styryl dyes is characterized in that 1 mol of a styryl compound of the formula
EMI0002.0004
where R1, R2, X, Y and m have the abovementioned meanings, with 1 and
Reacts 2 moles of an alkali cyanide in the presence of water and dehydrates the resulting addition product of hydrocyanic acid on the vinyl double bonds in an acidic medium with a mild oxidizing agent.
The styryl compound or the addition compound can be in an aqueous suspension or in a homogeneous solution in a suitable organic solvent. The reaction temperature can fluctuate within wide limits.
The dehydration of the hydrocyanic acid addition product is preferably carried out after the first stage by the action of a mild oxidation medium in an acidic medium. As an oxidizing agent, for. B. in question: atmospheric oxygen, calcium hypochlorite, bromine, chloranil, N-bromosuccinimide, benzoyl peroxide, dilute nitric acid, lead acetate, red lead, and the like. a. m.
It is advisable to use only a small excess of oxidizing agent in order to protect the unsaturated compounds formed.
The isolation of the dyes can be carried out by one of the usual basic operations such as B. Filtration, concentration of the solvent, precipitation from the Lö solvent with a suitable medium.
The new dyes can be used as such or in mixtures with other dyes for dyeing oils, paints, plastic compositions and plastics in bulk, as well as compositions for spinning and dissolved in organic solvents.
For example, acetate rayon is dyed in the mass in red tones. The dyeings have good to very good light, water, washing, perspiration, over-dyeing, alkaline chlorine, sublimation, oxalic acid, dry cleaning, flue gas, rubbing, ironing, peroxide bleaching and thermosetting fastnesses.
In addition, they are resistant to hydrosulphite and can be easily etched under suitable conditions.
Some of the new dyes are also suitable for dyeing acetate rayon from an aqueous dispersion.
In the following examples, parts are parts by weight and percentages are percentages by weight, the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius and the melting points are uncorrected. Example 1 106 parts of the styryl compound of the formula
EMI0002.0037
are dissolved in 472 parts of dimethylformamide. A solution of 13 parts of sodium cyanide and 65 parts of water is added dropwise at room temperature with thorough stirring. The addition is complete in a few minutes and the solution has become colorless.
The reaction mixture is successively combined with 750 parts of glacial acetic acid and 89 parts of lead tetra-acetate. As soon as the dehydrogenation has ended, the reaction mixture is loaded onto 5000 parts of ice water.
After some time, the precipitated dye is filtered off, washed with water and dried. The reaction product obtained can be recrystallized from methyl alcohol; it crystallizes out in magnificent thick needles, which melt at 150. The solution color of the dye in acetone is bluish-tinged red, its absorption maximum in dimethylformamide is 538 nm.
The dye obtained dyes acetate silk in the mass in red shades with good fastness properties. To dye acetyl cellulose in bulk one proceeds, for. B. as follows: 100 parts of acetyl cellulose are mixed with 300 parts of a solvent mixture of 93% acetone and 7% methanol. The mass is mixed for a short time and left to swell overnight. 0.5 parts of the styryl dye obtainable according to the above example are dissolved in 85 parts of the same solvent mixture by simply shaking.
This solution is added to the acetyl cellulose solution and the mixture is stirred in an open vessel until 60 parts of the solvent have evaporated. The colored mass is then pressed into the spinning pot in the usual way and spun. The threads obtained are colored red; the dyeings are distinguished by good fastness properties.
Other valuable dyes, which can be prepared according to the indications given in Example 1, are described in the table below. They correspond to the formula:
