La fig. 1 est une vue en partie en élévation de face et en partie en coupe verticale de ladite forme d'exécution de la machine à découper des pommes de terre en tranches ; la fig. 2 est une vue fragmentaire de la machine de la fig. 1, prise par l'axe du rotor, sensiblement sui vant la ligne 2-2 de la fig. 4 ; la fig. 3 est une vue détaillée en coupe par la ligne 3-3 de la fig. 2 ;

la fig. 8 est une coupe fragmentaire similaire à celle de la fig. 4, mais représentant une autre forme du mécanisme de découpage ; la fig. 9 est une élévation de face détaillée du mécanisme de découpage de la fig. 8 ; la fig. 10 est une vue similaire à celle de la fig. 8, représentant une forme modifiée de porte-lames uti lisé sur la machine des fig. 1 à 4 ;
Machine for slicing potatoes and similar vegetables The present invention relates. to a machine for slicing potatoes and similar vegetables.
The object of the present invention is to provide a machine for cutting potatoes into slices, automatically operating to feed the potatoes one after the other to a cutting station forming part of the machine, of a construction. simple, facilitating both the initial production of the machine and its maintenance in service, and whose operation presents a high efficiency.
The invention further aims to allow the manufacture of a machine, in which a potato is entirely cut into slices in a single pass at the cutting station, and in which the pieces or slices of each potato thus obtained have uniformly straight sides.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention and variant details thereof.
Fig. 1 is a view partly in front elevation and partly in vertical section of said embodiment of the machine for cutting potatoes into slices; fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the machine of FIG. 1, taken by the axis of the rotor, substantially along line 2-2 of FIG. 4; fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view taken through line 3-3 of FIG. 2;

fig. 8 is a fragmentary section similar to that of FIG. 4, but representing another form of the cutting mechanism; fig. 9 is a detailed front elevation of the cutting mechanism of FIG. 8; fig. 10 is a view similar to that of FIG. 8, showing a modified form of blade holder used on the machine of FIGS. 1 to 4;
figs. 11 and 12 are respectively a front view and a sectional view of a cutting form used with the blade holder of FIG. 10, and fig. 13 is a view similar to that of hg. 11 showing a modified cutter used with the blade holder of FIG. 10.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 7, it can be seen that the main structure of the embodiment of the machine comprises an annular frame 20 mounted by means of bolts 21 on a side wall 22 of a cast block 23 which, for its part, is fixed on a base 24. A hopper 25 feeding the potatoes 26 to be cut is mounted on the opposite side of the frame 20 by means of bolts 27.
A drive motor 30 is also mounted on the cast block 23 with the aid of a support 31, and the drive shaft 32 of the motor carries a toothed wheel 33, through which the motor control. is transmitted to a planetary transmission mechanism, consisting of a satellite wheel 34 and a toothed ring 35 clamped between the support 31 and the cast block 23. The satellite wheel 34 is carried by a support 36 keyed on the control shaft 37 of the cutter, which shaft is mounted by means of suitable bearings 38 in an internal boss 39 presented by the cast block 23.
The frame 20 has a central part 40, the radial section of which is of a general gutter-shaped construction, to form a cylindrical rolling path followed by successive potatoes during the operation of the machine, as will be explained in more detail. far.
The rolling path 40 has a notch 41 on the front of the machine, and the cutting mechanism is placed in this notch. This mechanism comprises a carrier member 42 which is articulated on the housing at 43 so as to allow an oscillating movement between a retracted position shown in dotted line in FIG. 4 and an operating position shown in solid lines, in which it is superposed on the notch 41 and is locked to the frame using an arm 44 and a locking screw 45, as seen in the figure. fig. 4.
In fig. 1 to 7, there is shown the cutting mechanism arranged to cut the potatoes into elongated slices of generally square section, as is usual for making French fries. Several knives or blades of elongated shape 50 are mounted by their opposite ends in the blade holder 42 and they protrude into the path 40 in parallel planes directed radially with respect to the frame 20.
An additional series of knives 51 is mounted on the front of the blade holder 42, being directed horizontally and vertically offset from each other in the step parts 52 of the blade holder 42. With this arrangement, a cutting head earth moving on the raceway 40 is first cut into plates by the blades 50 disposed radially with respect to the raceway, and then by the blades 51 into slices of square section which are cut on the front of the machine.
The progression of each potato 26 on the path 40 is ensured by means of a rotor mounted in the frame 20 and designated as a whole by the reference 55. This rotor comprises a support plate 56, fixed as indicated at 57. on a hub 58 which, for its part, is keyed to the shaft 36 as shown in FIG. 4. This rotor 55 also comprises two blades 60, each of which is arranged so as to form a pocket 61 in the outer radial surface of the rotor.
As can be seen most clearly in fig. 4 and 5, this pocket 61 has a cross-sectional shape in radial section, and its inner wall diverges from the path 40 in the direction of rotation of the rotor so as to create a wedging effect in the direction of the path 40 s' exercising on a potato 26 arriving in the pocket. Such a configuration of the pocket also has the effect of aligning a potato located in this pocket along its long axis, as illustrated on the fia. 4.
In addition, the outer radial part of each blade 60 has several slots 62 coinciding with the blades 50 so as to let these blades penetrate into the interior of the pocket 61 in order to cut a potato brought into this pocket by the post. cutting.
Means are also provided for supplying the potatoes one at a time to the interior of the rotor 55 to enable it to pick up this potato and to transport it by the cutting station for the purposes of cutting it into pieces. slices. By referring more. especially in fig. 1 and 2, we see a hollow screw conveyor 70 which is fixed by its inner end on the outer face of the rotor 55, by its rim 71 retained against this face by several screws. 72, this conveyor 70 having relatively deep internal threads 73 extending over its entire length.
The open outer end of the conveyor 70 extends to a point adjacent to the inclined bottom of the feed hopper 25, and this hopper also has a bottom formed by a flap 75 hinged to the hopper at 76. The lower edge of the flap 75 has a notch 77, the size of which allows the passage of a potato, but this notch is covered with a flap 80 formed of thick rubber or other flexible material, and provided with a curved support plate 81 on the lower surface of the shutter.
The normal position of the shutter 75 is shown in solid lines on the fia. 1, and in this position it comes close enough to the inclined bottom of the hopper 25 to prevent a potato from passing through the notch 77. A mechanical connection exists between the screw conveyor 70 and the shutter 75, forcing the latter to oscillate so as to let in potatoes at the outer end of the conveyor, in synchronism with the rotation of the rotor. This mechanism comprises a cam 85 formed by a circular rim presented by the conveyor and co-operating with a follower roller 86 carried by a console 87 on the lower surface of the shutter 75.
The cam 85 has high points 88 on its opposite sides, so that when the conveyor 70 is dragged in rotation, the flap 75 oscillates between the position shown in solid lines and that in dotted lines in FIG. 1. Each time the shutter performs such an oscillating movement, a single potato can pass through notch 77 and flap 80 to be fed to the open end of conveyor 70, as shown in FIG. 2, and to each complete revolution of the conveyor 70 correspond two such operations.
By continuing to turn, the conveyor forces the successive potatoes to move along its internal threads 73 and to arrive in the rotor, where the admitted potatoes are collected by the vanes 60 and carried to the décou page, as it has already been said.
The method of construction of a slicing machine as shown in FIGS. 1 to 7 offers notable practical advantages. Thus, the blade holder and the associated blades have a dimension adapted to receive a whole potato and to cut it into slices in a single pass during its passage through the cutting station, from which it follows that for each revolution of the rotor, two whole potatoes are cut into slices.
Moreover, thanks to the construction shown of the blades 51, which have a straight cross section and a small width, and thanks to the parts forming steps 52 presented by the blade holder 42 allowing these blades to be placed tangentially to the axis of the rotor , all of the slices obtained by cutting a potato have substantially uniform straight sides.
The machine described also makes it possible to produce a wide variety of shapes which can be given to the cut slices, by simply changing the members of the cutting station. Thus, in FIGS. 8 and 9, we see a mechanism for cutting the potatoes into flat slices, the thickness of which is suitable for cooking leafy apples. The knife holder 90 is similar to the blade holder 42, but does not support vertical blades and its exterior surface has offset parts 91 whose grains are less spaced than the steps on the blade holder 42.
The blades 92 are mounted on the knife holder 90 as were the horizontal blades 51 described, and moreover the mechanism operates in an absolutely identical fashion.
In fig. 10, we see yet another form of blade holder 95, which is identical to the blade holder 90 and 42, but of which part of its outer face is cylindrically curved at 96. This blade holder 95 is intended to operate with blades of the type shown in FIGS. 11 to 13. The cutting plate 97 of fig. 11 and 12 is provided with a cutting grater having several individual holes 98, each of which has a part of its peripheral edge formed like a blade, in order to cut each potato into straws or matches.
The cutting plate 99 of FIG. 13 has another type of cutting grater, consisting of parallel cutting parts arranged very close to each other, in order to cut the potatoes into very thin flat strips to make potato chips. Each of the cutting strips. 97 or 99, or other types of blades, can be mounted on the blade holder 95, and their operation with respect to the other parts of the machine remains the same as that described above.
