<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
bildete Apparate aufweist.

Method and device for heat treatment, in particular for drying finely divided solids It is known to dry finely divided or pulverulent substances by evaporating the adhering liquid with the aid of so-called flow drying. In this way of working, which has proven particularly successful compared to other drying processes, the moist material is mixed with a stream of previously heated gas or superheated steam and is carried with it through a long pipe from bottom to top. The heat required for drying to vaporize the liquid and warm up the solid is generally supplied by the sensible heat of the previously heated gas.
However, the process has not inconsiderable technical deficiencies. A relatively high gas velocity must be used in order to ensure the pneumatic transport of coarser particles as well, and in addition to counteract the danger of encrustation of the pipe walls of the apparatus, which exists particularly at low flow rates, which is usually the case with moist powders. The high flow speed requires correspondingly long pipes in order to guarantee the residence time required for drying.
The essentially straight pneumatic solids transport also means that any heat transfer from the pipe wall to the solids must mainly take place via the carrier gas, which results in relatively low heat transfer coefficients. The amount of heat to be supplied through the pipe wall is therefore small and the drying speed for the individual particles varies greatly depending on whether they flow inside the pipe or on the edge, so that the effort required is often not worthwhile.
This is a disadvantage especially for the heat-sensitive substances, because with these, in order to avoid damage to the goods, the drying temperatures and thus the drying performance per unit of gas quantity must remain limited. A further disadvantage is that with the usual, more or less straight pneumatic transport, the solid flows in pronounced, often intensely clumped strands within the carrier gas mass. This hinders the even drying process and brings both an extension of the drying time and the risk of overheating of the previously dried particles.
The described disadvantages of the known electric dryers can be avoided by the method according to the invention. The present patent relates to a method for heat treatment, in particular for drying finely divided solids with the aid of a warm gas stream in a drying tube, which is characterized according to the invention in that the solid-gas mixture is guided in helical paths with simultaneous supply of heat the pipe wall.
In this way it is achieved that, despite a gas velocity which is sufficient to avoid encrustation and to safely transport even coarser particles, a relatively short tube can be used, so that considerable drying performance is possible even with small tube lengths. Furthermore, the solid particles are driven against the wall as a result of centrifugal force and move along the wall in a veil. It is therefore possible to continuously supply heat by heating the tube walls during the drying process.
Due to the fact that, despite the low total dry gas and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ring he slides along the wall with a linear flow velocity in the axial direction at a relatively high speed, the result is extraordinarily favorable heat transfer conditions compared to the known method. These are further increased by the fact that the wall friction of the solid material results in high relative velocities between the dry gas and the solid compared to the usual flow drying. It is also possible to subdivide the tube heating over the length and to set different high temperatures in order to achieve the highest possible drying performance with gentle material handling.
Another advantage arises from the fact that, despite small amounts of drying gas, the sliding speed of the goods on the wall can be selected by appropriate selection of the helix pitch so that the tendency of the powder to stick to the walls, which depends on the flow speed, is reduced to a minimum.
It is known to carry out exothermic gas reactions in the presence of dust-like contact masses, the gas and contact masses being passed through the contact tube in a rotating motion. Here, however, it is not a question of the supply of heat through the reaction gases and possibly through the pipe walls, as is the case with the drying of finely divided solid masses, but rather of the dissipation of the heat of reaction occurring in such catalytic processes. During drying, however, the heat required for drying for the evaporation of the liquid and heating of the solid should be supplied by the sensible heat of the previously heated gas.
Here, heat is supplied by the gases, while in catalytic processes it is generated by gas reactions and is carried off to the container wall via the catalyst mass. It is also very important that moist solid particles are introduced into the drying tube in the drying process in the sense of the method according to the invention. In catalytic gas reactions, gases and catalyst mass are introduced into the reaction tube in the form of dust and dry, so that any incrustations can hardly occur here. The patent also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.
The method and the device according to the invention can be used not only for drying but also for heating and cooling pulverulent substances.
The method and the device according to the invention are then explained using the drawing, for example.
1 and 2 show an embodiment of the device for carrying out the method with tangential gas supply and discharge, FIG. 3 another embodiment of the device for guiding the gas flow in helical paths through guide elements in the inner tube in the passage from bottom to top, FIG when guided from top to bottom and Fig. 5 when two stages are connected in series.
The rotary movement of the gas and thus of the material flow characteristic of the operation of the device according to the invention can be brought about in various ways, the simplest way is to let the drying gas and the solid material flow tangentially into the pipe (Fig. 1 and 2 ). The tangential component of movement of the material that is generated in this way decreases gradually as it flows through the pipe, but it is maintained over a considerable length of the pipe.
In Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is a hopper which receives the material to be dried. It is entered into the pipeline 3 at the appropriate speed by a cellular wheel 2. Air or other suitable gases are introduced into this pipe 3 at a sufficient speed. These gaseous media can optionally be heated with the aid of the heat device 4.
The pipe 3 is connected tangentially to the lower end of the vertical pipe 5. In this way, a helically rising gas flow arises within the tube 5, which leads the powdery substances to be dried upward in the form of dust. As a result of the helical movement, the material comes into constant contact with the inner surface of the tube 5.
The pipe 5 is surrounded by a heating jacket 6 through which a liquid or gaseous heating medium flows with the help of the pipe connections 7 and 8. The temperatures of the pipe 5 are kept so high that the intended drainage of the solid components is achieved at its upper end. The carrier gas with the dried material leaves the pipe 5 through a line 9, which is also inserted tangentially to the pipe 5. This leads to a centrifugal separator 10, where the solid components are separated from the gas flow and fed to a collecting container 11. The gases leaving the centrifugal separator 10 also pass through a cloth filter 12, which holds back the last remains of dust-like components.
The gas escaping through the pipe 13 contains the moisture absorbed from the solid components in a vaporous state. This vapor can easily be separated as a liquid by cooling.
In general, the process according to the invention is carried out without fully utilizing the water vapor absorption capacity of the gas. When passing through the heated vertical tube 5, the gaseous medium also heats up, with a significant increase in its water vapor absorption capacity occurring. For this reason, most of the gas flowing off at 13 can return to the process cycle again. Only part of the gas has to be excreted and passed through
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Cooling to be freed from the absorbed moisture.
A particularly effective mode of operation is illustrated in FIG. 3 below. In this design, a control system for the helically guided gas is created by means of guide plates on a centrally attached rod or pipe.
The guide elements can for example be designed as continuous screw threads. It is particularly advantageous, however, to design these as wings which are arranged at intervals from one another and which can be designed as cutouts from helical surfaces or as flat guide plates. The flow of gas and material is repeatedly divided by guiding elements arranged at such intervals and the generally existing tendency to form streaks is effectively countered in that a uniform veil is formed and the entire heating surface is used.
According to FIG. 3, the material to be treated is introduced from the storage container 1 directly into the drying tube 5 via the distributor 2. The drying gas flows via the heater 4 through the line 3 to the drying apparatus 5. This is heated by a heating medium which is located in the pipe jacket 6. In the drying tube 5 there is a rotatable inner tube 12, which can also be supplied with a heating medium through the supply line 14; if steam is used as the heating medium, it flows off again in condensed form through line 15.
This internal heating means that, with the same external dimensions of the drying tube 5, the drying performance can be increased and the gas requirement can be reduced. The inner pipe 12 is provided with wings 13, which have inclined surfaces in accordance with the desired flow path and can be designed to be flexible so that their outer edges strip off the inner wall of the pipe 5. The inner tube 12 with the blades 13 is driven via a drive gear 17 and drive wheels 16 and 18. The material flows along the inner wall of the drying tube 5 in helical lines with the carrier gas from bottom to top. At the same time, heat is continuously supplied through the walls of the tube 5.
The treated material is withdrawn with the carrier gas through 9, and in the cyclone 10, which is insulated or also heatable, the solid and the treatment gas or water vapor are separated from each other so that the treated solid parts can be removed by a cellular wheel 11 or other discharge devices.
In this mode of operation, the rotating tail unit also has a cleaning effect when the wings 13 brush the inner wall of the drying tube 5 at a small distance, namely through the air flowing at high speed through the narrow gaps. By increasing the speed of the rotating guide elements 13 and corresponding wing position, at least on part of the pipe length, one can not only achieve that the drying gas and material move on the desired helical paths through the pipe 5, but also accelerate the flow so that the Guide organs 13 simultaneously act as conveying organs instead of an otherwise required special fan.
If the vane speed is high enough, the vane 13 can also consist of flat strips which are arranged in the axial direction and which are particularly easy to manufacture.
The drying device according to the invention is preferably designed in a vertical arrangement, with the material and the gas flowing from the bottom up. With the precautions described for the forced guidance of the flow of material and gas, the direction of flow can also be selected the other way round.
In Figure 4, such a device for carrying out the method is shown, in which the solid-dry gas mixture flows essentially downwards and the drying tube is designed at its lower end as a cyclone separator. After being preheated by the heating device 1, the gas enters the drying tube 4 after the drying material has been taken up by the drying material feed 3.
The gas-dry material mixture flows downwards in helical paths into the space between the clean gas pipe 5 and the drying pipe 4, the guide devices 6 on the one hand initiating and maintaining the helical movement of the gas and on the other hand causing the dry material to be finely divided instead of in strands Veil slides over the inner wall of the tube 4. In the lower end of the drying tube 4, the wall of which is heated by a heating medium in the heating jacket 7, a conical tube section 8 for separating the solid particles from the gas, as in a cyclone separator, is directly connected.
In order to effect a separation of the finest solid particles, a control device 9 - which generates a stronger swirl - can be installed in the lower end of the drying tube 4. The separated dry material is collected in the collecting container 10 and the clean gas escapes through the central clean gas pipe 5.
In Fig.l to 4, the drying tubes have been shown in a vertical arrangement. However, the drying tubes can also be arranged obliquely or horizontally. Several pipes can be used one behind the other, for example alternating upward and downward flow, or they can be used in parallel. Furthermore, several such helical drying tracks can be accommodated in a very confined space by drying tubes arranged one inside the other.
In Fig. 5, a further device for carrying out the method is shown, which has a plurality of heated, cyclonic, connected in series.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
having formed apparatus. After being heated by the heating device 2 and the solids to be treated being added by the adding device 1, the gas enters the first apparatus 4 tangentially above, where it flows downwards in helical paths, the solids being dried by the carrier gas and the heat absorption from the is dried by the heating jacket 5 heated inner wall. The dried material is discharged through a rotary valve 6.
The material discharged with the carrier gas through the gas pipe 7 from the first apparatus 4 is separated in the downstream heated cyclone 8 and removed. In this case, the method can be designed by the corresponding design of the first cyclone 4 so that it preferably separates the heavier, not yet sufficiently dried particles, while the light, almost completely dried particles escape into the second cyclone device 8 for final drying. The insufficiently dried particles from the second cyclone apparatus 8 can be fed back into the circuit of the adding device 1.
The embodiment described in FIG. 5 is particularly suitable for the treatment of gaseous substances in which solid particles are formed, since sufficiently large solid particles are separated out in the first cyclone 4 and the particles that are still too fine for further drying until they are separated in the next or the next but one cyclone remain in the carrier gas.
One use of the method described consists in the drying of plastic powders, in particular polyethylene.
