Engine Starting Device This invention aims to provide a simple, convenient and effective device for transmitting starting power to a vehicle internal combustion engine or other internal combustion engine from a particular power source.
The engine starting device according to the invention be seated a drive part arranged with axial freedom of movement on a drive shaft, which has an external thread with a large pitch, furthermore a sleeve provided on the drive part which has an internal thread cooperating with said external thread, a hollow output part with an attached thereto attached pinion for engaging a gear on the internal combustion engine, a friction clutch connecting the said sleeve to the driven part and a spring arranged between the drive part and the driven part.
In the accompanying drawing an example embodiment of the subject invention is shown.
The device shown is used with an electric motor serving as a power source a and has a drive part b which is connected by Keilver bond with one end of the motor shaft c; this drive part has axial freedom of movement and can be operated by a lever d. On this part, an external thread with a large pitch e is formed and a sleeve f is also arranged, the bore of which is provided with a complementary internal thread.
The driven part g has the shape of a hollow cylinder, and at one end a pinion h is attached for releasable engagement in a gear i present on the internal combustion engine.
A friction clutch is provided between the sleeve f and the driven part g. This coupling is preferably made of annular plates i, which have alternating wedge connections or derglei Chen with the sleeve f and the driven part g. The clutch plates are held in light contact with one another by at least one spring k which is arranged between one of the end plates and a collar m on the sleeve.
In order to achieve a firm connection between the plates when a start-up torque caused by the engine occurs, a strong spring consisting of at least one resilient disk n is arranged between the end plate of the clutch and a collar o on. Furthermore, a further spring p is provided, the ends of which are each supported on the drive and output parts.
The arrangement is such that the above-described device for starting the internal combustion engine is first actuated by means of a hand lever d 'which acts on lever d through a stop d2, the latter in turn on the drive part b </ I > engages to cause the pinion h to mesh with the gear wheel i on the machine.
If the ends of the pinion teeth hit the ends of the gear teeth during this movement, a continued axial movement of the drive part b causes the output part g to move angularly as a result of the interaction of the screw threads on this part and on the sleeve, wherein the spring p between the drive and the driven part is now pressed together.
As soon as during this Winkelbewe supply the pinion teeth with the tooth gaps on the machine gear to align, he shares the said spring with the output part an axial movement to cause the meshing of the pinion and gear.
After the pinion and gear wheel have come into engagement, the electric motor is set in motion, and the interaction of the screw thread present on the drive part with that of the sleeve causes the plates of the friction clutch to be pressed together so that a starting torque can be transmitted. After starting the internal combustion engine, the device is brought back to its original position by axial movement of the drive part.
The switching on and off of the electric motor is accomplished by any suitable switch. Actuation of this switch by lever d is preferred. In the illustrated exemplary embodiment, the switch is indicated at q and is of the push-button type. This switch then actuates an electromagnetically operated switch, which finally produces the power supply to the motor.
A stop s is formed on the lever d, which is used to actuate the switch, and this lever also has an elongated bore t through which the pivot u of the lever dl extends. Furthermore, the lever is loaded by a spring v which holds the lever in the position shown. When the device is put into operation, the first effect of the movement of the lever d1, which takes place against the influence of the spring, is to absorb the play existing between the pivot u and one end of the bore t. When moving the lever d is taken along.
This gives the part b the required axial movement and later closes switch q. After the machine has been started, releasing the lever dl enables the spring v to give the lever d a movement which is then used between the other end of the bore t and the pin u to increase existing play, whereby the switch can open again and the motor is brought to a standstill. The pressure subsequently exerted on the lever by the spring causes part b to return to its original position.
The above clearance between the lever d and the pivot u is necessary to take into account the fact that if the pinion h </ I> is in engagement with the gear i when the latter is blocked (by accident) and can therefore not follow the drive exerted by the motor on the pinion h, to open it again Bring the engine to a standstill.
The device described can be used in wesent union in the same way if another engine is used instead of an electric motor as a power source, only that in such a case the switch actuating means is omitted or replaced by a different control device.
