Automatic device for controlling the purge valve of a grit trap Known grit traps, generally used in high mountains for the water supply of hydroelectric facilities, comprise a settling basin at the bottom of which the sand and gravel are deposited. Clean water is collected at the top of the sand trap, then led to a collector.
When the purge of the grit trap is activated, the deposits are entrained in the direction of the discharge formed by the bed of the torrent, downstream of the water intake.
The present invention relates to an automatic device for controlling the purge valve of a sand trap.
In the appended drawing, given by way of example, the single figure schematically represents an embodiment of the device, object of the invention.
The settling basin 1 of the grit trap com takes a front wall 2, a rear wall 3 and an inclined raft 4 on which solid matter 5 to be removed, for example sand, gravel or a deposit of, is likely to be deposited. any kind. The water to be desanded arrives at the top 1a of the wall 2 and the desanded water flows through the fixed weir 1b and the discharge collector 1c, shown schematically by a dotted line.
At the lower part of the rear wall 3 is arranged an opening capable of being closed by a drain valve of the grit trap, of a usual type, for example a 6 sector valve.
Inside the basin 1 and near the rear wall 3 is mounted an elbow tube 7, one of the branches, the vertical branch 8, ends, near the base, in a water sleeve 9, in the form upside-down funnel, and the other branch of which, the horizontal branch 10, passes through the rear wall 3 and ends in a vertical nozzle 11, intended to discharge the water delivered by the tube 7 into a mobile tank 12, small dimensions.
The water sleeve 9, intended to serve as a sand detector, is rigidly fixed to the tube 7 and is strongly connected to the walls or to the bottom of the sand trap.
The rear wall 3 of the settling basin is, moreover, crossed between the water level 13 for full filling of the grit trap and the horizontal branch 10 of the tube 7 by an upper pipe 14, terminating in a vertical nozzle 15, intended for pour the water discharged by said branch 10 into a mobile tank 16, of the same dimensions as the tank 12, but lighter.
Below the horizontal branch 10, the rear wall 3 is crossed by a lower pipe 17, intended to supply a vertical reservoir 18, used to control the valve 6 which will be described below.
Inside the basin 1, the ends of the pipes 14 and 17 each have a strainer 19, 20 respectively, and each of the three pipes 14, 10 and 17 is provided with a guard valve 21, 22 and 23 respectively, said valves, in the open position during the operation of the purge device, being intended for the possible plugging of the pipes in the event of emptying of the basin or to dry the installation in winter.
The horizontal branch 10 is connected to the vertical end piece 11 by a swan neck 24 whose height, relative to the water level 13, is adjustable at will, this height being, preferably, less than that of the strainer 19 , in order to ensure the adjustment of the water charge necessary for its flow through the detector 9.
Behind the gooseneck 24, the branch 10 is provided with a valve 25, intended for adjusting the flow of water for filling the mobile tank 12, said valve being adjusted to remain slightly open.
For a similar purpose, the upper pipe 14 is provided with a valve 26, intended to regulate the flow of water for filling the movable tank 16, said valve being adjusted to remain slightly open.
The two mobile tanks 12 and 16 are also capable of being each supplied by a bypass 27, 28 respectively, from the lower pipe 17, the flow rate of which is regulated by a valve 29, 30 respectively, said valves, normally closed, being intended to be operated manually for installation needs. The tanks 12 and 16 are, moreover, connected to each other by a cable 31, wound on two grooved pulleys 32 and 33,
arranged so that the tanks can move vertically in the opposite direction under the effect of the difference in the volume of water they contain and their own weight.
On the strand of the cable 31, from which the mobile tank 12 is suspended, is fixed the end 34 of a lever 35, articulated at 36 and intended to control, by a rod 37, a wedge valve 38, intended to close the lower pipe 17.
The end 39 of the pipe 17, located outside the basin 1, is fixed to the lower part of the vertical tank 18 in which a float 40 is capable of moving. This float 40 is connected by a cable 41 to a counterweight 42, fixed. at the end of a control lever 43, articulated at 44 and tiné to actuate the sector valve 6.
Pulleys with groove 45 and 46, intended to guide the cable 41, are arranged in line with the float 40 and the counterweight 42 respectively, so as to constantly ensure the tension of the cable 41, for controlling the purge valve 6.
The bottom of the tank 18 comprises a drain valve 47, normally closed, and an evacuation duct 48, provided with a drain valve 49, normally slightly open, and a wedge valve 50, said valve 50 being connected by a rod 51 to a lever 52. This lever 52, articulated at one of its ends 53, is fixed by its free end 54 to a cable 55, intended to support a mobile tank 56, said cable, wound on a grooved pulley 57, being connected at its other end to a counterweight 58.
The mobile tank 56, the dead weight of which is less than that of the counterweight 58, is capable of being filled by the water flowing from a duct 59, opening at 60, in the overflow of the reservoir. vertical 18 and to be emptied by means of a valve 61, fixed in the bottom of said tank, said valve being normally slightly open. In addition, a bypass duct 62 connects the pipe 17, downstream of the valve 38 and a little above the bottom of said pipe, to the duct 59.
Finally, each of the mobile tanks 12 and 16 is provided at its upper part with a screen and at its lower part with a valve device 63, 64 respectively, with a calibrated orifice 65, 66 respectively, and with another valve 67, 68 respectively. The valves 63 and 64, which are normally fully open, can be used for possible adjustment of the flow rate and the valves 67 and 68, normally closed, are intended for manual maneuvers of the installation.
When the settling basin is filled to the water level 13 and the deposit of material 5 does not reach the opening of the inverted funnel, the water enters the detector 9 and, through the pipes 8, 10 and 11, fills the mobile tank 12. The flow rate is adjusted by the valve 25 so as to be low so that no appreciable entrainment of the deposit can take place by the detector 9, which is wide enough for the speed water inlet is very low.
The calibrated orifice socket 65 ensures a permanent flow of the tank 12, but its flow rate is a little lower than that set by the valve 25, so that the tank 12, being always full, the water passes through the sieve and overflow.
The tank 16 is supplied by the strainer 19 and by the valve 26, adjusted so that its flow rate is between that of the valve 25 and the flow rate of the calibrated orifice 65. The sleeve 66, identical to the sleeve 65, provides emptying the tank 16 with a slightly lower flow rate than that of the valve 26. The tank 16 is therefore always full. In addition, the dead weight of the tank 12 being greater than that of the tank 16, the valve 38 remains closed and no - purge of the sand trap can be actuated.
When the deposit of material 5 reaches the inlet of the detector 9, the purge device operates as follows: the base of the detector being obstructed without the low value of the water flow sucked in hindering this obstruction, the tank 12, no longer being supplied, empties, the water flowing through the valve 63 and the calibrated orifice bush 65.
During this emptying, the tank 16 continues to be fed, so that its weight will become, at a given moment, greater than that of the tank 12, increased by the frictional forces of the valve 38 and of the pulleys 32 and 33. The tank 16 therefore lowers and the vessel 12 rises, thus causing the drive of the lever 35 to open the valve 38.
A strong flow is established in the pipe 17 in the direction of the reservoir 18. From the start of this water circulation, the bypass pipe 62 ensures the filling of the tank 56. This filling is completed by the pipe 59 when the water reaches the top of the tank 18.
By adjusting the valve 61 so that its flow rate is significantly less than that of filling the tank 56, said tank fills up quickly and, by becoming heavier than the counterweight 58, closes the valve 50 by means of the lever 52.
The water then rises rapidly in the tank see 18 to the level of the overflow 60, the flow rate of the valve 38 being much higher than that of the valve 49.
The float 40 rising at the same time as the water level, the counterweight 42 is lowered under the effect of its own weight and the purge valve 6, pivoting around the axis 44, opens, thus allowing the deposit 5 to flow out of the settling basin, which makes it possible to purge the grit trap.
Following the emptying of the basin, the strainers 19 and 20 are put dry and cause the deactivation of the entire installation. The mobile tank 16 in turn empties through the valve 64 and the calibrated orifice 65. When the weight of said tank becomes less than that of the tank 12, the latter is lowered and closes the valve 38. via the lever 35 and the rod 37.
The mobile tank 56 also empties, the water flowing through the valve 61, and rises under the effect of the counterweight 58 and of the cable 55 to which it is connected, automatically opening the valve 50 through the intermediary of the lever 52 and of the rod 51. In turn, the reservoir 18 empties slowly and the float 40, being heavier than the counterweight 42, lowers at the same time as the water level of said reservoir, which has the effect to close the purge valve 6. The basin 1 fills again as well as the two tanks 12 and 16 and the automatic purge control device begins to operate as described above.
It should be noted that the tank 12 fills up a little faster than the tank 16, so that the valve 38 can remain closed. In addition, the duration of the purge of the grit trap is set by opening the valve 61, said valve determining the rate of emptying of the tank 56. Finally, the time interval between the moment when the deposit of material 5 reaches the lower opening of the detector 9 and the instant of automatic triggering of the purge is likely to be fixed by the diameter of the calibrated orifice 65.
The water flowing from the mobile tanks 12 and 16 could be recovered by being collected by funnels 69 and 70 respectively, connected to a common pipe 71, opening into the feed reader neck 1c of the basin 1.
Instead of being fed by the strainer 19, the tank 16 could be filled with the water flowing from the tank 12. In this case, the upper pipe 14 with its valves 21 and 26 and the strainer 19 would be omitted, but the installation would be higher.
It is obvious that the assembly formed by the tanks 12 and 16 could be used as a relay for a more powerful device, controlling the valve 38. In this case, these two tanks could, for example, be arranged so as to ensure the opening of a smaller valve, intended to fill a mobile tank counterbalanced by a counterweight and connected to the lever 35 of the valve 38, for example by means of the same device used for the control of the tank 56, of the counterweight 58 and valve 50.
If, at the start of filling the tanks 12 and 16, the imbalance of the weights of said tanks is not large enough, the total weight constituted by the dead weight of the tank 16 and its volume of water risks being too quickly lower than that of the tank 12; and the return movement is performed too early. In this case, the device described could be completed by fixing a stopper on the cable 31 for suspending the tank 16, said stopper pressing on one end of a lever, the other end of which would be provided with a small counterweight.
A ratchet would allow the upward movement of the tank 16 without the device intervening, which would have the effect of increasing the imbalance of the two tanks necessary for the operation of the automatic control device of the sector valve 6.
The object of the device described is to automatically control the purging of a sand trap or any other settling basin intended to remove solid matters contained in a liquid. It applies in particular to continuous purge sand traps and has the advantage of using for its operation the energy supplied directly by the water contained in said grit trap, without the intervention of electric or pneumatic energy.
Water consumption is practically zero, because the very low flow rate used by the automatic device is likely to be returned to the collector. Another advantage of the device described lies in the fact that the triggering of the purge depends only on the quantity of material deposited at the bottom of the sand trap, the location of the detector at the bottom of the basin being chosen according to the nature of the deposits. If, for example, the deposit is mostly fine sand, the detection point will be located closer to the purge valve than if the pond water contained more gravel.
In the event that the settling basin fills with too much material deposit and a fault is observed in the automatic control of the purge valve, in order to facilitate emptying of the des- sand trap, provide an additional pipe 72, of large dimensions, having at its upper end a strainer 73, located below the crest of the weir lb,
said additional pipe terminating in a bevelled end piece 74 near the opening of the wall 3, closed by the purge valve 6, so as to bring water free of deposit to the outlet of the grit trap and thus avoid the formation of a plug when opening the purge valve.
