A support 40 for the grinding wheel, mounted on a carriage 41, can slide transversely and longitudinally on the bed 10 relative to the workpiece support 11. A grinding wheel 42 can rotate on this support and is driven by means of a control by belt from a motor 43. The assembly shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 for the grinding of a standard cam differs slightly from that shown in figs. 3 and 4 for the grinding of a blade. In fig. 3 and 4, a standard cam 50 is mounted next to the main headstock 20 between bearings 51 and 52 on the cradle 11.
A pin 53 integral with the standard cam or the main headstock passes through the bearing 52 and comprises a member 54 for driving the part and a point 55; an unground blade 56 is inserted into said dragging member and mounted so as to be able to turn between said tip 55 and tip 57 of auxiliary headstock 13.
The standard cam 50 rotates in contact with a follower roller 60 which pivots in the bearings 61 of a bracket 62 fixed to the carriage 41. The roller 60 has a diameter equal to the average diameter of the grinding wheel 42, it is that is to say the average between the diameter of a new wheel and that of a wheel worn to the maximum. This standard cam 50 is maintained in contact with the roller 60 by means of a spring 65 mounted between the bench 10 and the cradle 11.
To grind a standard cam, the machine is mounted as shown in fig. 1 and 2. The bearings 51 and 52 are brought halfway on the cradle 11 and a blank 50 of the standard cam is mounted so that it can be rotated between the bearings on the spindle 53. A model 70 is mounted. on the drive member 54 of the workpiece so that it can rotate between the point 55 of the main headstock and the point 71 of the special auxiliary headstock 12.
This model differs from the vane in manufacture 56 in that part A, which corresponds angularly to the concave part A of vane 56 and which does not include; the leading and trailing edges 1 and 2 respectively have a convex profile. You could use the cam 50 made from model 70 to grind a part identical to model 70. Part B of part 56 is the same as part B of model 70. Cam cam 50 made from model 70 adjusts the bone motion of part 56 as if it had the same shape as model 70.
For this reason, there is no contact between the part 56 and the grinding wheel while the part A is adja cente to the surface of the grinding wheel. This effect is due to the fact that the master cam corresponds to model 70 and not to part 56 with respect to part A. A drive shaft 72 connects the control of the part to the spindle of the master cam. The model 70 rotates at a relatively low speed, in contact with the curved surface of a follower shoe 73 which is longitudinally adjustable mounted on a bracket 74. The bracket 74 is mounted on the carriage 41 in front of the grinding wheel support. 40. The radius of the follower shoe 73 is equal to the mean radius of the grinding wheel 42, that is to say it is equal to that of the roller 60.
Since the etalon 50 and the model 70 are driven at a relatively low speed, it is not necessary to apply a force such as that supplied by the spring 65 on the cradle 11. A balance arm is used. brage 80 attached to said cradle and which extends in a direction which maintains the pattern 70 in contact with the shoe 73. Weights 81 can be added to said arm to exert the desired force on the cradle.
To grind vane 56 in the most efficient way, and to combine in one operation what would normally require four, grindstone 42 (fig. 5) is shaped such that one side face grinds a spur. element 90 of the root 91 of the blade 56. The left corner of the grinding wheel 42 is given, looking at FIG. 5, a radius of curvature 92 making it possible to grind the connection between the blade 56 and its root 91. The peripheral surface of the grinding wheel 42 is ground to present a radius of curvature 93 to which the spoke 92 is connected.
The purpose of spoke 93 is to adapt the grinding wheel to all the longitudinal curvatures of the blade 56 and also to facilitate the grinding of the part to the dimension, in a single pass, after a plunge grinding at this dimension, as shown. in fig. 5 in which the solid line represents the blank and the dotted line the limit of the grinding operation.
To start the machine, the operator actuates the machine start switch 100 (fia. 6) which connects a LI line via a conductor 101 to a push-button 102 for starting the machine. running of the grinding wheel. From the conductor 101, the current is also directed by conductors 103 and 104, a pushbutton 105 for stopping the machine, with normally closed contact, and a conductor 106, towards a start-up relay coil OP of an engine 107 of an oil pump.
The OP relay has only one contact 108 which closes the circuit from LI through conductors 103 and 104, push button 105 and conductor 106 for serve as a holding circuit for the OP relay coil, the other end of said coil being connected to a line L. Starting the engine 107 of the oil pump makes it possible to have pressurized fluid throughout the hydrau installation lique. The operator then presses the grinding wheel start-up push button 102 to close the circuit starting from the conductor 101 and passing through a conductor 109 to end at a coil of the relay W of the grinding wheel motor.
This relay, like the OP relay of the oil pump motor, has only one contact 110 of the holding circuit. However, it is understood that other contacts of these two relays, which have not been shown, serve to start the engine of the oil pump and the motor of the grinding wheel respectively. The same is true of the engine of a coolant pump, the coil 111 of which is supplied from LI by contact 108 of the oil pump, contact 110 of the engine of grinding wheel, conductors 113, 109 and 114, and a switch 115. The other end of coil 111 is connected directly to L2. The machine described above can be operated in any one of three separate cycles.
The first of these will be designated by work cycle in a single pass. This consists in first advancing the grinding wheel in the workpiece over the entire depth of cut, that is to say to a predefined dimension, and then in initiating a relatively slow longitudinal advance movement to effect a grinding operation which is known as single pass work. At the end of the longitudinal stroke, the grinding wheel is released from the workpiece and the longitudinal feed movement is reversed to quickly bring the workpiece and the grinding wheel to the starting position.
Another cycle is called multiple pass grinding. This cycle consists in advancing the grinding wheel in the part to a predetermined depth, but not to the final dimension. Thereafter, a longitudinal feed movement is carried out at a speed much greater than that employed in the single pass cycle. At the end of the first pass, a counting mechanism is actuated and the workpiece and grinding wheel perform a relative reciprocating axial movement for a number of passes which is determined by the counter. At each reversal, the wheel advances by a predetermined amount, so that during the final pass it has been brought to the desired dimension.
The third cycle is simply a plunge grinding operation which consists of using a grinding wheel having a width equal to the length of the surface to be ground. The wheel is advanced, as in any plunge grinding job, until it reaches the desired dimension, after which the wheel is released from the workpiece. This cycle can be used only on blades having rectilinear contact or which can be manipulated during a grinding operation to ensure such contact with the grinding wheel.
We prefer the cycle in a single pass to the other two cycles and we will discuss it more fully than the others. To begin with, this cycle does not require a reversal of the longitudinal advance movement and, therefore, there is no need to have the elements necessary for such a mechanism, such as reversing valves and reversing lever.
To start a grinding operation, the operator moves a lever 200 to the left (fig. 1, 3 and 6) in order to communicate the orifices 201 and 202 of a valve 203. The pressurized fluid of a pipe 204 is directed by said valve in a pipe 205 towards the right end of an inverter slide 206 which then moves to the left (FIG. 6). In this position of the spool 206, the pressurized fluid from a line 207 is directed through a line 208 and a shut-off valve 209, lines 210, 211 and 212, to one end of a rapid advance cylinder 213 to drive a piston 214 and a feed screw 215 downwards in FIG. 6.
The feed screw 215 acts, via a vertical shaft 227 of the grinding wheel support 40, to move this support and the grinding wheel 42 mounted on it, in cooperation with the part 56. This movement is slowed down by a dash-pot 219 for grinding the shoulder 90 of the part. At the same time, fluid passing through line 211 is directed through bypass line 220 to the left end of cylinder 221 to move piston 222 sliding in that cylinder to the right. This movement of the piston 222 activates a switch 120 and brings it to the position opposite to that indicated in the lower part of FIG. 6.
In this position of the switch 120, the current which comes from L1 is directed by a conductor 121 to an opening contact 122 of an HR relay. Contact 122 closes a circuit through a conductor 123 which terminates at the coil of a HF relay and through a conductor 124 at the coil of a CR4 relay.
The energization of relay CR4 closes contacts 125 and 126 ; the contact 125 connects LI through a conductor 127 to a normally closed or opening contact 128 of a CRI relay and a conductor 129 feeds an electromagnet-push switch 130 normally or green. The contact 126 closes a circuit starting from L., and comprising a conductor 131, an opening contact 132 of CRI, a conductor 133 and the other terminal of the electromagnet 130. L The electromagnet 130 then excited closes a contact 134.
The supply of the relay HF starts the motor 21 for driving the workpiece via relay contacts (not shown). The HF relay power supply also closes a contact 135 which closes a circuit through a conductor 136, the push-button switch contact 134, a conductor 137, contacts 138 and 139 of a switch. with successive closings 190, a conductor 141 and the coolant switch 11.5 to energize the coil 111 of the coolant motor start relay (not shown).
When the piston 214 and the grinding wheel support 40 reach the end of their rapid positioning movement, the feed screw 215 serves to throttle the outlet of the pressurized fluid in a line 216, which engages the pressure. to move a valve 230 against a spring 231 to direct pressurized fluid from a line 232 through a line 233 to a fast forward pressure switch 234. In the single pass cycle, switch 234 plays no role until the slow advance is complete.
The pressurized fluid is supplied by a pump 107 through a line 240 to one end of a pressure actuated relief valve 241 of a well known type. The pressurized fluid passes through this valve into a line 242 and a reducing valve 243 which is in turn connected by a line 244 and a line 245 to the left end of the relief valve 241. The fluid coming from of the pipe 245 also passes through the left end of the valve 241 and is brought by a pipe 218 and the pipe 207 to different parts of the instal lation which will be described later.
When the valve 203 is turned to the left, as described above, and the pressurized fluid is directed through the line 205 to move the spool 206 to the left, the expulsion of the pressurized fluid through a pipe 253 is blocked. this line is connected to the pressure line 207 by the spool 206. The fluid from the left end of the valve 241 is then directed to the line 245, a valve 246, a line 247, a relief valve. reduction 248 and a pipe 249 to the head of a cylinder 250, driving a piston 260 to the left (fig. 6) in order to ensure a working advance to the grinding wheel 42 and the grinding wheel support 40.
As said piston nears the end of its travel to the left, a piston rod 261 which is rack-cut and meshed with a pinion 262 on said screw 215, reduces the flow of fluid from a pressure line. 263, by causing a pressure to build up therein and by moving a spool 264 to the left against a spring 265. Said spool in this position directs the pressurized fluid from the line 263 through a line 266 to actuate a slow forward pressure switch 267, which causes a contact 268 to close.
The closing of the contact 268 of the slow advance pressure switch 267 closes a circuit passing through LI and a contact 235 of the rapid advance pressure switch 234, through conductors 160 and 170 and a longitudinal advance selection switch 171, a conductor 172, a TRI, contact of the conductors 173, 174 and the coil of a relay CR2.
The supply of CR2 closes contacts 175 and 176 by connecting respectively LI and L2 to an electromagnet 177 of longitudinal advance to move a spool 270 of longitudinal advance to the left against a spring 271, by connecting a pressure line 272 with a line 273 on stages 2 and 3 of a distributor 274 with longitudinal advance. From stage 2 of this distributor, the pressurized fluid passes through stage 4 and a pipe 275 to a small bore 276 at the left end of a spool 277 to move this latter towards the right (fig. 6).
The fluid is supplied to the spool 277 from the pressure line 272 by the stage 3 of the distributor 274 of longitudinal advance and a pipe 278. The spool 27.7 being in the right position, the pressurized fluid coming from the conduit 278 is directed by a conduit 279 towards the left end of a cylinder 280 for controlling longitudinal advance to push to the right a piston 281 and the grinding wheel carriage 41. During this movement, the roller 60 moves from left to right on the standard cam 50, while the grinding wheel 42 moves in the same direction on the part 56.
At the same time, the fluid coming from line 279 also passes through line 282 to actuate a pressure switch 283 controlling the direction of longitudinal advance to open a contact 180 of this switch. The role played by the opening of this switch is part of another cycle and will be described later.
When the carriage 41 reaches the end of its stroke to the right, a cam 45 (fig. 6) carried by it comes into contact with an end switch 44 of the back stroke of the grinding wheel support, closing a circuit by so much LI and passing through a conductor 185, a switch 186 position selector and a conductor 187 to energize the coil of a CR3 relay. The excitation of CR3 closes contacts 188 and 189 to connect the lines LI and L2 by conductors 191 and 192 respectively, in order to supply an electromagnet 193 for recoiling the grinding wheel support .
This electro-magnet moves a spool 285 against a spring 286 to connect a pressure line 287 to a line 288 which leads to the right end of a spool 289. This spool moves to the left upon contacting it. a notched bush 217 mounted on the tap 203 to turn this tap in the dextror- sum direction to the position shown in FIG. 6. In this position of the valve 203, the pressurized fluid coming from the line 204 is directed by the line 290 towards the left end of the spool 206 and moves the latter towards the right of FIG. 6.
In this position, from the spool 206, the pressurized fluid from the line 207 passes through a check valve 295 and a line 296 and reaches a chamber 297 adjacent to the rapid advance cylinder 213. The pressurized fluid introduced into this chamber returns the rapid advance udder 214 to its starting position. As soon as this piston has moved enough to uncover a line 298, fluid is directed by it to the slowly advancing cylinder 250 to move the piston 260 to the right and to prepare the advance mechanism for. the next operation.
At this time, fluid is also directed from line 298 and through line 299 to the right hand end of cylinder 221, to move piston 223 to the left and bring switch 120 to the position shown in Fig. fig. 6.
The switch 120 being in the position shown in FIG. 6, the circuit passing through LI , conductor 121, normally open contact 1-22 of HR, conductor 123 up to HF and CR4, is cut. However, CR4 and HF remain supplied from LI by a main opening contact 135 of HF, the conductor 136, l 'switch 134, conductor 137, contact 138 of switch 190 with successive closures, conductor 145 to 121. In this position of switch 120, a circuit is closed to the brake 25 in which a switch 320 can be opened by the rotation of an arm 321 when the motor 21 changes direction.
From switch 320, the circuit continues through a conductor 300, a contact 301 of HF, conductors 302 and 303 to a contact 304 of CR3, a conductor 305 to the CRI coil. Powering the CRI coil opens contacts 128 and 132 connected by conductors 129 and 133 to the electromagnet 130 to push button by de-energizing this electromagnet.
The de-energization of this electromagnet releases the contact 134, which, however, is kept closed by a cam 310 on the main headstock spindle until the latter turns into a determined position for which said cam releases contact 134, which opens a circuit through conductor 137, contact 138 of switch 190, conductor 145, conductor 121, NC contact 122 of HR and conductor 123 to the HF coil. De-energizing HF closes a circuit passing through a break contact 315 by energizing CRI from LI by switch 120, the braking switch 320, a conductor 322, a contact 323 of CRI , a conductor 302,
a contact 315 from HF to HR. Another conductor 303 connects conductor 302 through NC contact 304 of CR3 and conductor 305 to maintain CRI. . The HR power supply opens contact 122 and closes contacts (not shown) to reverse the connection of motor 21. Reversing motor 21 releases arm 321 which withdraws to open braking contact 320, by cutting off thus any power supply to the motor 21. The opening of the contact 320 cuts off the holding circuit passing through a contact 323 of said relay and the contact 304 of CR3 to supply the coil of CRI.
When the rapid advance piston 214 and the slow advance piston 260 have returned to their starting position, the pressure is no longer exerted on the pressure switches 234 and 267, CR., Is de-energized, which opens the circuit. feed of the electromagnet 177 of longitudinal advance and allows the spring 271 to move the slide 270 of longitudinal advance to the right. In this position, the pressurized fluid coming from the pipe 272 passes through this slide to end in a pipe 400, at stage 1 of the distributor 274 of longitudinal advance, and at a pipe 401 and at a small bore 402 of the right end of drawer 277 to move it to the left.
In this position of the spool 277, the pressurized fluid coming from the line 278 is directed by a line 403 to the right end of the cylinder 280 to bring the piston 281 and the carriage 41 to the left, that is to say- ie in the starting position. With the pressure drop across the left end of cylinder 280, longitudinal advance pressure switch 283 returns to its normal position with contact 180 closed. The circuit through this contact had previously been opened by the pressure drop in the slow feed pressure switch 267 when the grinding wheel advance mechanism was replaced.
Using the different selector switches shown in fig. 6, the other operating cycles can be performed. If it is desired to impart to the carriage 41 a back and forth movement in order to carry out several successive phases, it is possible to use a reversing valve 224 (FIG. 6). This valve can be actuated by tabs (not shown) carried by the carriage 41 or else by hand by means of a lever 225 (fig. 1 and 3). The left end (Fig. 6) of this reversing valve is a reducing valve 226 which is connected so as to provide an adjustable time delay during manual or automatic operation of the reversing mechanism.
