<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Apparatus for cutting winding stems and controlling their length The object of the present invention is an apparatus for cutting winding stems and controlling their length. This device is characterized by a base carrying a spindle which can move axially and provided with a clamp in which engages at an adjustable depth a winding rod, a guide for the cutting tool and two rods of adjustable length, parallel to the spindle and one of which carries a mark and the other a stopper, said spindle itself carrying an index which can be brought either opposite the mark or in contact with the stop, all so that the index is in contact with the stopper, the winding stem can be cut to the correct length,
flush with the guide and after having screwed a threaded crown to the required length onto the stem and having applied its inner face against the guide, said index coincides with the mark.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is an elevation view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are front views. Fig. 5 is a section on a larger scale of a detail.
In the drawing, 1 represents a base in which is mounted a spindle 2, movable axially and provided with a clamp 3 for a winding stem 4 carrying its crown 5.
The spindle comprises an axis 6 having at one of its ends a control wheel 7 and an index 8 integral with a sleeve 9. The latter is mounted to rotate around the axis but is fixed axially. At its other end, the shaft has a thread 10 and an axial recess 11 in which fits a collet 12. The latter, forming an independent part, is held in place by a clamping ring 13 screwed onto the clamp. thread 10 of the axis. It carries a central rod 14, part of which has a thread 15 screwed into the clamp 12.
The end 16 of the rod 14 serves as a stop for the winding rod and the other end carries a control head 17 and a locknut 18 intended to axially fix the rod.
The base has on its upper face a rectangular stud 19 in which is formed a slide 20, parallel to the spindle and intended to guide a slide 21. The latter can be moved axially and stopped by tightening a fixing screw 22 of which the point 23 penetrates into a groove 24 of said slide. It carries an arm 25 lowering towards the clamp and the end of which has a hole 26 through which the winding stem passes. The outer face 27 of said end is perpendicular to the axis of the winding stem. She is

intended to serve as a guide for a cutting tool, not shown, intended to cut said rod.
Two screws 28 and 29, of adjustable length, engage in tapped holes in the base and can be secured by tightening fixing screws 30 and 31. Face 32 of the head of screw 28 serves as a stopper for the index 8, as shown in fig. 2 and the collar 33 of the screw 29 has a mark 34 intended to be brought opposite a mark 35 of the index.
To adjust the device, the procedure is as follows. We unscrew the clamping ring 13, remove the pin from the base and remove the clamp 12. By turning the head 17 of the rod 14, the position of its stop 16 is adjusted. so that the square of the winding stem can be tightened in the clamp. We tighten the locknut 18, reintroduce the pliers into the recess 11, then the spindle in the base and finally we mount the clamping ring 13. We then take a winding stem fitted with its crown and having exactly the length desired.
This rod is passed through the hole 26 of the guide and it is engaged in the clamp, tightens the clamping ring and axially moves the spindle until the underside of the crown 5 comes into abutment against the guide 27. When the spindle is in this position, shown in fig. 1, the index 8 is folded over the collar 33 of the screw 29 and the latter is turned until its mark 34 coincides with the mark 35 of the index. The fixing screw 31 is then tightened which maintains the screw 29 in this position.
Winding crown 5 is then unscrewed and the spindle is moved so as to bring the end of the winding stem up to the level of the face 27 of the guide, then the index is tilted on the screw 28 and the face 32 is brought up. of the head of this screw in contact with the index 8, finally screw 30 is tightened. The spindle is then in the position shown in fi-. 2.
The apparatus being thus adjusted, its operation is as follows. We begin by inserting a winding stem without its crown into the pliers and the pin and its index are made to take the position of the fia. 2. The section 36 of the winding rod is then cut exactly at the height of the face 27 of the guide. A crown is then screwed onto said rod and the underside of this crown is applied against the guide, causing the pin to assume its position shown in FIG. 1. Its two marks must coincide provided that the tapping of the crown is carried out to the required depth.
The base has a longitudinal shoulder 37 making it possible to fix the device on a vice.
