6 et 11 à 15 in cluse).
Apparatus for recording and reproducing sounds The present invention relates to an apparatus for recording and reproducing sounds by magnetization of a flexible belt, the track of which is previously traced in the hollow and comprising a magnetizable part.
Magnetic recording and reproducing devices have many advantages of their own over other recording and reproducing devices, and also have certain disadvantages. Thus, a substantial advantage is the ease with which recording and reproduction can be carried out, and the possibility of being able to reuse a recording surface indefinitely. When the recording surface is made of a wire or a tape, the lack of easy accessibility of a given part of the recording surface constitutes a serious drawback. To overcome this disadvantage, magnetic recorders and reproducers have been provided which can be used with discs and belts.
When one has to use recording surfaces of this type, fundamental difficulties arise with respect to the track.
As the magnetized recording surface has no visually discernible sound track, since the sound track consists of an imaginary track containing the magnetized recording material, it is necessary to provide a means to specify the track between the mechanism. reproducer and recording surface. Tracking does not present any difficulty during recording since the act of recording onto the recording material creates a magnetized sound track. It is essential that during recording some device is provided to move the recording head and make it describe a sound track on the recording surface. The problem with the track with machines of this type arises in reproduction.
One apparent solution to this problem involves the use of a conductive screw for the recording head; by the action of this conductive screw, the head traverses the surface on which the recording is made, and defines a sound track. For reproduction, it is necessary to ensure the correspondence between the reproduction head and the soundtrack of the start of recording, and then, theoretically, the guide screw should allow the track to be followed during the whole reproduction. of the recording. Whether the recording surface is the disk type or the belt type, fundamental difficulties have arisen with apparatus using a conductive screw to define the track.
In both types of recording, the economic condition requires that a recording surface have a maximum track length to allow recording therein, or reproducing it for a reasonably long period of time. In disk or belt recording types, the soundtrack starts from a point on the recording surface, in the case of the disc taken from outside the recording surface, and in the case of 'a belt taken from one edge of the recording surface, and gradually moves to another point. Thus, in both kinds of recording, the track must have a step. In disk recording, the pitch will refer to a spiral. In the court record, the pitch will refer to a propeller.
In both cases, the pitch will depend on the recording speed, and the size of the recording surface. A recording surface operating for a reasonably long time would therefore require a small track pitch, assuming, of course, that the physical dimensions of the recording surface itself must be small.
To maintain the track across the recorder face during playback, it is essential that the track's drawing tolerances be of a smaller order than the track's pitch. Thus, for example, recorders making with a burner style disc recordings of the deep type, usually have a pitch of the order of about 8 grooves per mm. In this type of recording, when a recording groove has been engraved; the needle simply follows the groove during reproduction. Considerations of recording time and speed make it necessary to use a low pitch with a burner-style type of recorder. Recording time considerations are also valid with magnetic type recording, although the recording speed may be reduced.
Because of its characteristics, the pitch of the track, in a magnetic recording, can be four or five times larger.
So, for example, a pitch of 2 tracks per mm with a belt width of about 100 mm is convenient for magnetic recordings. This takes into account the total size of the belt, the face speed for proper recording and reproduction, the suitable recording time, and other factors determined by technical and competitive considerations. commercial. Such a belt would have two hundred tracks. Maintaining the recorder recording on a track involves considerations of mechanical tolerance, and dimensional stability of the track. Thus, with regard to mechanical tolerances, care must be taken to limit the displacement of the recording belt, due to the inaccuracies of the mandrel and the belt.
Half a percent deviation from perfect alignment is equal to an entire track deviation of the two hundred tracks on the belt.
Apart from considerations of mechanical precision, there is the fact that the material itself on which the recording is made changes its dimensions sufficiently as a result of atmospheric conditions to introduce track errors. Assuming that the material used as the basis for the recording is a plastic material, it is well known that plastics can vary in size up to two or three percent with the variations in temperature and humidity which occur. produce in an office or at home. Unless a single manual or complex automatic means of track correction is provided, serious track errors can occur with a conductive screw type drive.
The present invention relates to an apparatus intended to operate with a belt on which a groove is previously engraved and which serves as a recording base. The apparatus forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a pair of spaced horizontal mandrels, supported at one end only, an electric motor and clutches for selectively driving these mandrels, a guide bar parallel to these mandrels and spaced from them, this bar por as a sliding arm arranged so as to extend above a mandrel, a recording and reading head supported by this arm and part of which is guided by the track of the recording belt and makes contact with this track at the top of one of the mandrels.

The apparatus shown, which constitutes a dictating device, is mounted excluding the microphone, on a generally flat base, on which the component parts of the apparatus are fixed or supported.
Referring to Figure 1, an electric motor 12 is carried by the base 10 at its rear left corner. The motor 12 is of the type usually employed in dictation machines, and may be an induction type AC motor running at a substantially constant speed. A capacitor 13 is fixed on the base and this capacitor can be connected to one of the windings of the motor 12 to obtain a phase shift. The speed of the motor 12 can be controlled by a suitable rheos tat 15 having an adjusting disc 16. It is understood that the different parts which have just been described are suitably connected to each other by a wiring arranged along the base 10.
Between motor 12 and motor capacitor 13 is a metal box 18 containing the power transformers and forming part of a power supply for the amplifiers. Different parts of the electronic section of the apparatus such as vacuum tube amplifiers, capacitors and transformers are distributed on base 10 to form a compact group.
For example, the controls 19a, 19b are provided for the on-off switch and the volume control. In addition, a speaker microphone assembly 20 is provided with the forward, reverse and listen controls. The whole speaker microphone is connected by a cable to the main frame.
A hollow molten metal frame 22, rigidly attached to base 10, has a generally flattened horizontal region 23 in which the recording belt and mandrels are disposed. For simplicity, the molten metal frame 22 may be referred to as the mandrel chamber. In region 23 are mandrels 24 and 25, parallel and spaced apart, and supporting the recording belt; these mandrels have cylindrical bodies and rounded ends 26 and 27. These outer ends of the mandrels are accessed through the open end of the mandrel chamber 22 so that a recording belt can be placed on or removed from the mandrels in a manner which will be explained later. .
The mandrels 24 and 25 have projecting collars 29 and 30 (Fig. 7) respectively, at their inner ends, these collets serving as a stop for the recording belt. The mandrels are provided with shaft ends which are rigidly fixed to them and which protrude only from the inner ends of the mandrels.
Referring to fig. 8, mandrel 24 is shown to be provided with a shaft end 31. Mandrel 25 is similarly constructed and the shaft end is similarly supported. Suitably, the detailed construction of the bearing supporting the mandrel 24 and fully shown in FIG. 8 will be described, it being understood that the end of the shaft and the bearing are the same for the mandrel 25. Certain differences relating to the clutch and to the transmission pulley of the two mandrels are shown in FIG. 7.
The two mandrels are supported at their inner ends so as to be able to rotate in an auxiliary plate 33 disposed vertically and which is rigidly fixed to the base 10 and to the chamber of the mandrels 22 by bolts. The auxiliary plate 33 is appropriately drilled, and, as shown in FIG. 8, it carries a pad 34 for each mandrel. The bearing 34 is of a suitable material such as brass or other similar material, and consists of a sleeve 35, a collar 36 and a bearing 37. The bearing 37 is mounted in the opening of the plate. auxiliary 33, with mechanical forced adjustment, so that the bearing is tight.
The bearing 37 may extend a little beyond the surface of the auxiliary plate 33 which faces the inner end of the mandrel to serve as a spacer shoulder, and provide clearance between the inner end of the mandrel. and the opposite face of the auxiliary plate 33. The collar 36 sits against the outer face of the auxiliary plate 33, and forms a suitable stop for determining the depth to which the sleeve 34 is driven into the perforated plate 33.
On the sleeve 35 is rotatably mounted a pulley 39 comprising a domed surface 40 intended to receive the belt and terminated by end flanges 41 and 42. The pulley 39 also has a portion 44 which extends beyond the flange 41, on the side of the pulley furthest from the auxiliary plate 33.
It will be noted that in FIG. 8, the pulley 39 has a comparatively small diameter, this pulley going with the mandrel 24. The pulley 39 'of the mandrel 25 (fig. 7) is a very simple flat pulley having neither crowned part nor external flanges, and it also has an outer diameter larger than the pulley 39 of the mandrel 24. The difference between the diameters of the pulleys of the two mandrels is intended to obtain different belt speeds for driving this belt in forward or in motion back. If the pulleys 39 and 39 'are traction, then by the action of the clutch mechanism which will be described, the mandrel 24 or the mandrel 25 will be dragged.
If the mandrel 24 is driven by the pulley 39, the mandrel 25 becomes free with respect to the recording belt, and the recording belt will be driven in reverse at a certain speed. If the pulley 39 'acts on the mandrel 25, this mandrel 25 will be driven at reduced speed to in turn drive the recording belt forward during recording or listening. The relative diameters of the polishes 30 and 39 'can vary within wide limits depending on the desired characteristics.
A clutch making it possible to control the transmission of the driving force between the pulley 39 and the shaft 31 of the mandrel, is shown in detail in FIG. 8. The extension 49 of the pulley 39 has a smooth outer cylindrical surface 45 which extends to the flange 41. At the junction of the outer surface 45 and the flange 41 is a recess 47 in which the folded end 48 of a coil spring 49 can be accommodated. The spring 49 is a coil spring preferably of rectangular section wire, the spring having a sufficient number of turns to extend beyond the end of the pulley body 44.
As shown in fig. 8, the diameter of the outer surface 45 is large enough compared to the inner diameter of the coil spring 49 so that the different turns of the spring covering the body 44 tend to enclose the surface 45. However, as it appears Later, the turns of the spring 49 wind can move away from the surface 45 if desired.
The shaft end 31 of the mandrel extends beyond the part 44 of the pulley, and carries at its end a driven part 51. The driven part 51 is blocked on the shaft end 31 to rotate with it, in a suitable manner, such as, for example, a pin 51a. The driven part 51 has a cylindrical part 52 whose outside diameter is smaller than the inside diameter of the coil spring under normal tension-free condition.
As shown in Figs. 7, 7a and 8, the driven part 51 comprises a split end part 53 which consists of two spaced apart parallel parts 55 and 56 between which is formed a transverse slot 57. In the slot 57 are arranged two opposed angled levers 59 and 60 supported. by axes 61 and 62 which pass transversely through parts 55 and 56. The axes 61 and 62 are parallel to each other, are perpendicular to the axis of the shaft end 31 and are offset symmetrically with respect to the axis of the shaft. 'tree.
The angled levers are thus fixed in such a way that their parts 64 and 65 can move away from the axis of the shaft end. These parts 64 and 65 cover the part 53 of the driven part 52. The outer surfaces of the parts 64 and 65 can usually be flush with the extension of the surface defined by the active face of the driven part 52. The coil spring 49 has turns which cover parts 64 and 65. A clutch can be obtained by pushing the angled levers so that parts 64 and 65 move apart to rest on the inner surfaces of the coil spring.
In this type of clutch, when the parts 64 and 65 of the angled levers come to rest on the last turns of the spring, and assuming that the direction of rotation and the direction of winding of the spring correspond, the coil spring will have a tendency to roll up while tightening, so that a clutch engagement results with the driven part 52 for the transmission of the driving force.
A button 67 is provided to effect this movement of the bent levers. This button is disposed in the axis of the shaft end 31 and carries a shoulder 68 which fits with a hollow formed in the elbow levers 59 and 60. The button 67 has its end recessed and in the axis of the end of 'shaft 31. A coil spring 71 is disposed in the recess 70 and extends between the bolt and the end of the shaft end 31 to give the necessary thrust for the angled levers to hold in position. shown in fig. 8 where no clutch occurs.
To engage, press button 67 or button 67 ', as the case may be, towards the end of the shaft 31 or 31'. The mandrels 24 and 25 must be driven in opposite directions by the action of their respective clutches (it is understood that the free mandrel will be driven in the same direction as the mandrel controlled by the action of the recording belt); it will therefore be necessary to have springs 45 and 45 'of opposite pitches. Apart from this and the diameter of the pulleys, the two clutches of the two man drins can be of identical construction. An electromagnetic device is provided by which only one clutch can be actuated at a time.
This apparatus comprises a double coil whose windings 76 and 76 'are aligned. A magnetic core 77 of soft iron is mounted outside the windings. Inside the windings, and near their center is a magnetic core having a portion 77a which extends to the outer core, and conical pieces 77b and 77e opposing each other. to the other. Armatures 78 and 78 'are coupled to control parts 79 and 79' which can oscillate about vertical axes. The frames 78 and 78 'are interconnected by a rod 78a which can slide in the conical parts 77b and 77e (fig. 7a).
The control parts carry adjustment members 80 and 80 'which come into contact with the buttons 67 and 6T, respectively. When energizing winding 76 or winding 76 ', the corresponding armature is actuated to press button 67 or button 67' and engage. The mechanical construction has an interlock which prevents simultaneous actuation of both clutches. The electrical connections for controlling the device will be described later, and also prevent a simultaneous supply of the two windings.
Referring now to Figures 6 and 7, a pivot 81 is fixed to the auxiliary plate 33 and supports a lever 82 which can oscillate around it. The lever 82 carries an idle pulley 83 rotating on an axis, this pulley 83 being disposed a little below the large pulley 39 '. The end of the lever 82 opposite the idler pulley is pulled upwards by a spring 84 which is stretched between the end of the lever and a pin carried by the auxiliary plate 33.
The auxiliary plate 33 also comprises a bearing in which passes a shaft carrying a driving pulley 86 on one side of the auxiliary plate 33 and a large pulley 87 on its other side. The shaft on which the pulleys 86 and 87 are mounted is supported by a bearing 88 carried by a support 89 projecting from the plate 33. As can be seen clearly in FIG. 7, the pulley 86 is on the same side of the auxiliary plate 33 as pulleys 39 and 39 'of the mandrels. The pulley 86 is convex and provided with flanges like the pulley 39 and it drives a belt 90. The belt 90 passes around the pulley 86, below the free pulley 83 and around the pulley 39; from there, it passes under the pulley 39 'to rest on the part of the pulley 39' which is located below the mandrel shaft.
The inner and outer faces of the belt 90 are motive force transmitting surfaces, and hence the belt 90 is preferably made of a suitable plastic or flexible material having both of its surfaces suitably treated. The pulleys 39 and 86 are both domed and provided with flanges to hold the belt 90 in position to continuously transmit motion. The pulley 87 is connected by a belt 92 to a driving pulley 93 wedged on the motor shaft 12.
The recording belt used with the apparatus is made of plastic, and a guide ring is previously formed therein; it is covered with a magnetizable layer.
To maintain a recording belt in the correct position on the mandrels 24 and 25, it is necessary that the axes of the two mandrels are parallel, and also that the surfaces of the mandrels are correct. In addition, the recording belt must also be correct. In mass production, it is difficult to obtain these characteristics without making the apparatus complicated and expensive to manufacture. It is essential, however, that the recording belt be retained in a predetermined fixed position relative to the ends of the mandrels and it is also desirable that the recording belt tend to move to this correct position if it is not there. not already.
For this purpose, collars 29 and 30 have been provided on mandrels 24 and 25 to limit the movement of the belt towards the auxiliary plate 33, and means are provided for exerting a small force tending to push the belt towards them. collets 29 and 30 and to retain the belt against the collars during the rotation of the mandrels.
In a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus, the movement of the belt in reverse is possible and desirable in order to be able to re-pass the track for rehearsal. In the case of needle type recorders and reproducers, it is not possible to reverse the direction of the recording medium. In a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus such as that described herein, if it is desired to reverse the direction of the belt, it is necessary to maintain a correct position of the recording belt on the chucks in each direction of travel. of the royal court.
In order to tension and guide the recording belt, in order to give it and maintain it a correct position on the handles, a free roller 100 of recording belt is provided (fig. 5, 9 and 12). The idle roll 100 competes with the part of the recording belt which is not supported, and preferably with the lower bearing of the recording belt. Thus, as shown in Fig. 9, the free roller 100 rests on the outer surface of the belt which is covered with a magnetizable layer and is constructed in such a way that it gives the belt uneven tension. from one end of its width to the other.
Tension is greatest at the edge of the belt which is closest to the end of the rounded mandrel, which for clarity may be referred to as the outer edge of the belt. The belt tension produced by the idle roller 100 decreases until it is minimum at the inside edge of the belt, which is the edge adjacent to the collar of the mandrels.
The variation in belt tension can be obtained by mounting a cylindrical free roller so that its axis forms a small angle with the mandrel as shown in fig. 9, or with a free roller, the axis of which is generally parallel to the mandrel, but the surface of which forms a truncated cone, the wide position of which rests on the belt near the outer edge of the belt. In either case, the free roller 100 tends to produce a force which pushes the belt against the collars 29 and 30 of the mandrels.
If the axis of the free roller is in a plane parallel to the axes of the two mandrels, the force produced by the roller on the spindle belt and pushing this belt towards the end collars of the mandrels will be substantially the same in both directions of walking belt. The angle of the axis of the free roll 100 or the magnitude of its taper may be small. Excessive force should not be produced on the belt tending to push it against the collars of the mandrels because the motive force of the motor would be wasted and there would be a noticeable tendency to stretch the belt over the ends of the mandrels. nies of snares.
The free roller 100 is supported by a rod 101 around which it can rotate, and this rod is supported by tabs 102 and 103 integral with a plate 105 which can oscillate. The tab 102 has one of its parts forming a finger; to adjust the angle of inclination of the free roller 100, an eccentric screw 104 is provided in the outer end of the rod 101. By turning the screw 104 (fig. 17) with respect to the rod 101, the end outer rod 101 can be raised or lowered.
The tilting plate 105 preferably extends over the entire width of the belt and comprises (fig. 5) a part 106 forming a body and a part 107 rising and connected to the previous one by a part. curve 108. The rocker plate carries pivot tabs 109 and 110 bent at right angles to portion 107, which tabs are on opposite edges of the rocker plate. The legs 109 and 110 are drilled and carry a pivot rod 112 which passes through them and is suitably fixed between the chamber of the mandrels 22 and the auxiliary plate 33.
The pivot rod 112 is disposed behind the mandrel 25 and around this pivot rod 112 is wound a coil spring 114, a fixed end 115 of which is anchored on. a stud fixed to the plate 33 and a movable end 116 of which bears against the adjacent outer surface of the tilting plate. As shown in fi-. 5, the coil spring 114 tends to push the rocker plate so that this plate pushes the free roller 100 of the recording belt into the space between the two mandrels.
The free roller 100 serving to tension the recording belt at its inner end which ends a little before the auxiliary plate 33, and the support rod 101 of this roller passes through a cutout made in the auxiliary plate 33 (fig. 6 and 11 at 15 in cluse). This free end of the rod 101 carries a U-shaped support 120, the sides 121 and 122 of which are crossed by the rod 101. The sides 121 and 122 of the support 120 also carry a roller. 124. The support 120 has a tail 126 which rests on a stopper 127 formed in the rocking plate, 105.
A spring 132 wound around the rod 101 at one end anchored to the tab 103 of the rocking plate, and its other end anchored to the tail 126, this coil spring tending to tilt the support 120 clockwise as seen in fig. 6. The tail and the stopper together serve to limit movement of the bracket 120 in response to the spring thrust.
The support 120 acts in the cutout 135 of the auxiliary plate 33. The cutout 135 can have any desired shape and its lower right part seen in FIG. 6 is for view of cam portions 136 and 137. Cam portion 136 faces down and rear of the apparatus while cam portion 137 faces down and forward of the apparatus. apparatus. The support 120 and the roller 124 are arranged such that the roller 124 rests on the cam 137 as shown in FIG. 6, which keeps the free roller lowered to the base of the unit and away from the recording belt.
The tendency of the rocker plate 105 to re-mount the free roller, as seen in FIG. 6, is held in check by the tendency of the roller 124 to press against the surface of the cam 137, which locks the rocker plate 105 in the lower position.
A command is provided for unlocking the tilting plate; it acts on the roller 124 and tends to make this roller 124 go up along the surface of the cam 137.
An angled lever 141 is mounted oscillating on a pivot 140 (fig. 6) carried by the auxiliary plate 33, this angled lever having arms 142 and 143. The arm 142 is directed downwards and is provided with a trigger finger. 14.5 folded to enter the cutout of the auxiliary plate 33. The trigger finger 145 is located near the cam surface 137 and its shape is such that it can be located under the roller 124 of the support 120 when this support is seated. found in the locking position shown in solid lines in FIG. 6.
By tilting the elbow lever 141 clockwise in fig. 6, the trigger finger 145 exerts on the ga let 124 an upwardly directed force, and causes the support 120 to tilt against its antagonist spring, in the counterclockwise direction. This raises the roller 124 on the cam surface 137. When the roller 124 is raised above the cam surface 137, the support 120 and the roller 124 are released and the rocker plate 105 can respond to the spring thrust. coil 114 and lift the idle roller 100 from the recording belt.
When the rocker plate 105 is brought to the locked position, the cam surface 136 guides the roller 124 so as to allow the roller and the carrier to assume a lock position. When the rocker plate 105 is unlocked and when a belt is lifted by the tension roller 100, the distance of the roller 124 from the cut-out portion of the plate 33 makes the rocker plate 105 float and gives free play to the mechanism. belt tensioner.
The angled lever 141 has its arm 143 pivotally mounted on a connecting bar 147. The upper end of the bar 147 is pivotally mounted at 148 on a tab of a rocking release plate 150 (fig. 1, 3, 5, 6 and 19). The rocker release plate 150 is pivotally mounted on an axle rod 151 mounted between the outer end of the mandrel chamber 22 and the auxiliary plate 33. The rocker release plate 150 has its front edge folded up to forming a horizontal guide 153, directed towards the rear, and disposed across the apparatus.
A spring 154 wound around the rod 151 has one end anchored to the mandrel chamber 22 and its other end presses on the rocking release plate 150 to push the plate down. The spring 154 is weaker than the spring 132 to allow stable locking of the tilting plate 105 in the low position. By means of the connection between the unlocking plate and the trigger finger 145, the thrust of the spring on the tilting unlocking plate 150 will normally push the trigger finger 145 towards the high position.
When the tilting plate 105 and the free belt tensioner roller 100 are locked in the low position as shown in fig. 6, the trigger finger 145 is in a low position and the trigger rocker plate 150 is tilted upward. To unlock the free roller from its inactive position, the tilting release plate 150 is depressed which transmits the force to the finger 145, which lifts the roller 124 and away from the surface 137 of the locking cam. This unlocks the rocker plate 105 and allows it to respond to the thrust of its spring.
A mechanism cooperating with the tilting plate 105 is provided to act as an alarm in the event that the idle roller 100 of the recording belt tensioner is in a locked position, separated from the belt, or if the roller is unlocked, but the belt is not fitted in the device. Referring to fig. 5, the tab 109 forming part of the rocking plate 105 has a slotted portion 160 (Figs. 10 and 11).
A switch box 162 having a control push button 163 is rigidly attached to the mandrel chamber 22 (Figs. 10-10b). The box 162 contains an electrical switch which can be normally open and which is intended to be closed by depressing the push button 163. This switch and others like it can be operated with a relatively small movement. of push button 163.
Tabs 164 are rigidly fixed to the switch box 162 and carry a pivot pin 165. On this pivot pin 165 is mounted a spring rod 167 provided to have limited movement around the pivot 165. On a support plate 169, carried by the switch box 162, is fixed an axis of pi vot 170. A part 171 carrying a finger 172 can oscillate around the pivot axis 170. The part 171 carries an axis of pivot 174 on which is fixed an arm 175. The arm 175 has a cutout 176 adjacent to the axis 170 and carries a control piece 178 cooperating with a part of the spring rod 167.
Normally, when finger 172 is horizontal, arm 175 is vertical. If finger 172 is tilted upward, pivot axis 174 is moved to the left as seen in FIG. 10b, and causes the control part 178 to move to the left which presses on the spring rod 167. If the finger 172 is tilted downwards, the rotation of the part 171 around the pivot 170 makes move the pivot axis 174 to the right as seen in FIG. 10a. The contact of the pin 170 and the edge of the cutout portion of the arm 175 causes the control part 178 to move to the left, which actuates the spring rod 167.
Thus, whether finger 172 is moved up or down from its normal horizontal position, the result is the same, i.e. the movement of the spring rod 167 to the left and the control of the push button 163.
The different parts are proportioned in such a way that when the idle roller 100 of the recording belt tensioner normally presses on the belt as shown in fig. 5, the finger 172 is horizontal and does not actuate the spring rod 167 of the alarm system. If the free roller 100 is locked in the down position, and separated from the belt, the finger 172 rises above the normal horizontal position to the tension free position, shown in FIG. 10b, which sets off the alarm.
If the free roller 100 is unlocked but does not press due to the absence of the belt, the rocker plate 105 excessively moves the free roller of the belt upwards, and lowers the finger 172, which again actuates the belt. alarm (fig. 10a). Assuming there is a recording belt on the chucks and the idler idler roll is released from the locked position and lifted, if the belt is in the incorrect position, the idler roll part 118 will press. on the belt and prevents the tension roller from raising to the correct position. It also moves finger 172 above its normal horizontal position (Fig. 10b) and activates the alarm.
Assuming that the recording belt is in the correct position and that the free roller is constantly pressing on the belt, a carriage associated with the recording and playback head pushes the end of the rod 167 acting on the switch. and operates the alarm when the end of the recording track is reached. In the latter case, the lever mechanism actuated by the finger 172 is not used, the alarm operating because of the thrust of the device carriage on the spring rod 167 (fig. 10).
A horizontal guide bar 181 is supported between a projection of the mandrel chamber 22 and a support carried by the auxiliary plate 33 (Figs. 1, 2, 3, 17, 19). The guide bar 181 has its axis parallel to the axes of the mandrels and carries a sliding carriage 183. The carriage 183 can slide along the bar 181 and carries the recording and playback head as well as the marker mechanism. Any oscillation of the sliding carriage 183 on the bar 181. As a result, bearings through which the guide bar passes are arranged at the ends of the carriage, the length of the carriage being large enough to provide a wide and stable base. It is understood that the guide bar 181 is of a suitable material such as steel and its surface has been smoothed.
The devices supporting the ends of the bar 181 can be provided with independent adjustments to spatially move the position of the support. This makes it possible to adjust the bar 181 to the exact parallelism with the mandrels. The drawings show three screws 181a at one end, for this purpose, which are screwed into tap holes. This centering can be provided for the two ends of the bar 181.
Referring to fig. 20, the carriage 183 is shown in separate parts. The carriage consists of an inner tube 184 of a suitable metal such as brass, having shoulders 185 and 186 at its two ends and a fine bore inside 187. The two ends of the inner tube 184 are somewhat more bored in 188, so that their inner diameter is a little larger than the bore of the inner tube 184. Bearings 190 and 191, are slid into the ends of the inner tube 184.
These bearings are shaped such that they can be pressed into the larger bore openings in the ends of the inner tube 184, and these bearings have bearing faces 192 which have an inner diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the bore 187 of the inner tube 184. The bearings 190 and 191 bear on the smooth surfaces of the fixed bar 181. The inner tube 184 does not contact the bar 181.
The bearings 190 and 191 preferably consist of a composition impregnated with oil or impregnated with graphite which is found on the market, these bearings not requiring any lubricating oil. With a substantial distance between the bearings 190 and 191, the entire oscillation of the carriage on the bar 181 will have only a negligible effect on the recording and reading head.
The assembly of the recording and reading head and the marker which is to be described later, is fixed to the part of the carriage near its right end as seen by looking at the front of the device (fig. . 1).
Around the outer portion of the inner tube 184 is an outer tube 200 which is provided to pass over the end shoulders 185 and 186 of the inner tube, serving as supporting surfaces. The outer tube 200 has a window 201 through which the brackets 202 and 203 can pass to attach to the inner tube 184. The brackets 202 and 203 are clamped to the inner tube of the carriage and carry the recording and playback head. . Supports 202 and 203 have curved ends 204 and 205 carrying fingers 206 and 207. Fingers 206 and 207 enter recesses 208 and 209 in inner tube 184. A screw 210 is provided to join supports 202 and 203 together. and tighten them so that they can firmly grip the inner tube 184.
It is understood that the distance between the inner and outer tubes is sufficient to contain the curved parts 204 and 205 so that the inner tube can be tilted relative to the outer tube about their common axis.
A marker support arm 214 is securely attached to the outer surface of the outer tube 200; this support arm has a curved part 215 which adapts to the curved surface of the outer tube. The outer tube 200 and the curved part 215 can be joined by hard welding or soldering or by screw. The arm 214 has a window 217 through which the recording and playback head passes, and a hook-shaped part 218 (Fig. 19) provided to slide on the upper face of the rocking release plate 150. The finger 219 extends the part 218 in the form of a hook, and engages in the U-shaped profile 153 serving as a guide and directed towards the rear, to limit the lifting of the part 218 in the form of a hook.
Beyond the hook-shaped portion 218 is the end of the marker holder 220 carrying the marker mechanism 222. The marker moves forward and backward with the carriage, the marker itself moving on. a band support plate 224 (fig. 1, 2 and 19), which is rigidly fixed to the apparatus. Plate 224 has edges folded back to receive a marking strip 226 of special paper with special instructions written on it. As is well known, these strips of paper may bear cue marks to indicate the beginning or end of a letter, a correction or other indication.
Usually, long and short marks made across the length of the paper are relied upon to indicate the beginning of a letter or a correction, respectively.
The marker mechanism (Figs. 1, 2, 19, 20 and 20b) comprises a base plate 230 having a rear face 231 and end faces 232 and 233. The end faces 232 and 233 have protrusions. drilled in lesquel the is disposed an axis 235. Keys 237 and 238 are mounted tiltably on the axis 235. Each of these keys is lifted by a coil spring 239 or 240. One end of each spring is anchored to the plate. base 230 and the other end of each res out presses against its corresponding key. These keys have tabs 242 and 243 directed toward each other behind the keys. A bottom culeur 245 is mounted on the axis 235 between the keys to be able to switch, and has sides 246 and 247.
Between the sides 246 and 247 and around the axis 235 is wound a spring 245a arranged in such a way that the rocker 245 is pushed by the spring in the same direction as the keys 237 and 238, that is to say towards the rear face 231. The sides 246 and 247 on lead the legs 242 and 243. The side 246 is longer than the side 247 so that in the normal position of these parts, the side 246 rests on the tab 242 while the side 247 does not reach the tab 243. The rocker 245 has an axis 250 mounted between the tops of its sides, and a coil spring 251 is wound around this axis. One end of the 251 spring is anchored to the rocker and the other end pushes on a style 253 bracket to lower it. A Style 255 is mounted on the Style Bracket.
When the 237 key is pressed, its tab drives forward the rocker 245, which advances the style. The length of the 246 side of the rocker gives the style maximum movement which produces a long mark on the paper. When the key 238 is pressed, it does not move the style as much, because of the movement lost between its tab 243 and the side 247 of the rocker. The two keys act on the same style so that there is no alignment problem for two markers.
The mechanism of the marker is covered by interlocking 257 and 258 for the keys, and 260 for the styling. The style interlocking has a mount 261 provided to fit over face 231 of the base plate 230 of the marker. Small screws go through holes in face 231 and housing mount 261, and thread into tapped holes on the back of sockets - 257 and 258. Style 260 socket has a notch. 263 on its front edge, which serves as a styling guide.
Referring again to the holder 203 (Fig. 20), this holder has an elongated hole 270 and a slit 271 at its end, large enough to allow adjustment of the recording or playback head 272. This is fixed with screws to the support 202 and passes through the window 217 of the support arm 214. The slotted end 271 of the support is crossed by a stud 273 fixed to the support arm 214. A res comes out 275 carried by the arm. bracket 214 at the back of window 217 gives slight pressure to the head as it slides over the surface of the belt.
The recording and reading head shown in FIG. 18 comprises a housing 277 carrying laminated sheets 288 and 289. These laminated sheets have their tops 290 and 291 bent at right angles to reduce the height. The windings 292 and 293 are arranged on the legs of the laminated sheets. An assembly of laminated sheets 294 to be in contact with the surface to be recorded may be slid between the flat sides of the laminated sheets 288 and 289. The lamination has a thickness approximately equal to the distance between the recording grooves. The assembly of laminated sheets 294 has two active poles, 295 and 296 underlined to form between them a small non-magnetic separation dimensioned with precision.
Attached to the assembly 294 is a track marker blade 297 of hard, non-magnetic material. Solid, non-magnetic material 298 may be provided to hold the entire recording and playback head intact and to control the gap of the track locator blade. A recording belt 299 covered with a magnetizable layer 300 is provided with track grooves previously formed as shown in FIG. 16. The track locator blade 297 can be moved away from the laminated sheet 294 by one or more recording grooves.
Permanent magnet erasure is planned. If we refer to fig. 1, 2, 2a and 6, a system of levers is provided to bring an assembly comprising a permanent magnet into the erased position. Although the erasure positive can take different forms, the example shown here is effective. A permanent magnet 302 of material such as Alnico 5, for example, is provided. This ai mant has its poles on opposite faces 302a and 302b. Non-magnetic separator plates 303a and 303b made of material such as brass or of plastic material are arranged along the sides of the magnet, between the pole faces.
A U-shaped pole piece 304 made of soft iron is arranged so that its handle is against the pole face 302b. A non-magnetic U-shaped separator plate 305 is disposed on the pole face 302a of the magnet, and on the free edges of the pole piece 304. The free edges of the piece 304 are substantially flush with the pole face 302a. of the magnet. The sides of the pad 305 overlap the sides of the pole piece 304.
The assembly is kept intact by giving spring to the pole piece 304 to press it on the permanent magnet and on the side separating thickness pieces 303a and 303b, and by giving spring to the non-magnetic piece 305 on the free edges of the pole piece 304. The assembly is carried by a rocker arm 306 on which it is fixed by bolts 307. These bolts can be screwed into ta raudées holes provided in the non-magnetic plate 303b. The position of these bolts outside the effective magnetic field of erasure makes it necessary to have non-magnetic bolts.
The erase assembly provides a magnetic field between pole face 302a and both edges of pole piece 304, across the width of the recording belt. Thus, part of the belt moving in front of the erasure field, first meets a field of a certain polarity, then a field of the opposite polarity. The intensity of the erasing field must be large enough to saturate the magnetizable layer of the belt.
The erasing assembly 'is carried by plates 306a starting from the ends of the arm 30.6 and which are pivotally mounted on a pin 308 through the entire front of the apparatus. The rod 308 is supported by bosses of the molten part 22 and of the plate 33. A plate 306a comprises an extension 309 pivotally mounted on a bar 310 which can move vertically. The bar 310 carries at its upper end a push button 311, and a slotted portion 313 of this bar is traversed by a guide button 314 carried by the casting 22 to guide the bar rette 310 in its vertical movement. A stop screw 315 carried by the rocking arm 306 is adjustable in order to limit the final removal position of the assembly.
The erase assembly tends to be brought into an inactive position by a spring 316. By pressing the push button 311, the erase assembly tilts backwards to put itself in the erasing position. . As shown in fig 2a, the pole faces determined by the edges of the pole piece 304 and the pole face 302a are arranged in a generally flat plane or at least in a plane having a radius of curvature greater than the radius of curvature of the recording belt on the mandrel. The erase assembly is oriented such that, in the erase position, and the belt moving in reverse, the edge placed in front of all edges of the set will be closest to the diaper. of the belt.
Thus, if a transverse band of the belt is supposed to run in reverse, the following relationships will be correct. When the strip is in front of the front polar face, the distance between the polar face and the strip has a predetermined minimum value. When the strip is in front of the middle pole face, the separation between the strip and the pole face will be greater than the minimum. When the tape reaches the reverse side, the separation is still a little larger than the minimum.
The minimum separation at the front polar face is determined to saturate the magnetizable layer. The separation at the rear polar face is determined such that the magnetizable layer is sufficiently magnetized so that the layer has zero or negligible magnetization, after leaving the rear polar face. It is clear that the separation at the rear polar face depends to some extent on the intensity of magnetizations due to the central polar face. This type of erasure is well known in the art.
Although erasing can be done in either direction of belt travel, reverse was chosen as the preferred direction because of the higher belt speed, and the faster erasing of the entire belt. results.
Referring now to fig. 21, a diagram of the electrical part, not including the electric motor, represents the operation of the different parts of the apparatus. In dictation devices, it is customary to provide a handset containing a microphone and the appropriate switches for controlling the device. The handset is connected by cable to the device itself. For the transcriptions, it is possible to provide remote control switches to control the operation of the apparatus, the microphone being omitted in this case.
With special reference to FIG. 21, the handset 325, which may include a suitable housing of plastic or other suitable material, contains the microphone and speaker combination 326, and the control switches for the recording and reproducing apparatus. The whole handset is connected by a cable. The switch system includes a pivotally mounted insulator 328, and a tiltable insulator 329. When the coin 328 is pressed, the apparatus is in the recording condition and the belt moves forward. When the insulating block 329 is tilted to the right, the belt travels in reverse, while if it is tilted to the left, the apparatus is prepared for listening.
Parts 328 and 329 are shaped such that they allow interlocking and prevent simultaneous recording and reversing.
The combined microphone and speaker 326 can be of any type, for example electrodynamic, and to its terminals are connected the wires 331 and 332. The wire 331 is connected to the fixed terminal of the normally closed contact 334, with a recording-listening relay, generally indicated by the reference 335. For simplicity, the recording-listening relay is shown with its rolling on the one hand, and its contacts arranged at a certain distance from the winding to reduce the length of the connections. The fixed contact 334 of the relay is combined with a moving contact 336, these two contacts being normally closed.
The movable contact 336 is connected by a wire 337 to a secondary winding 338 of a low frequency output transformer 339. The wire 332 coming from the microphone is connected to the other terminal of the winding 338 of the transformer. , wire 332 being grounded as shown.
The output transformer 339 has a primary winding 340 connected to a low frequency amplifier generally indicated by the reference 343. The low frequency amplifier can be a multistage amplifier designed to supply low frequency currents. at a suitable level, to the output transformer 339, to power the speaker microphone box 326 when it is used as a speaker. It is naturally understood that when it is used as a loudspeaker the reproduction of the recording takes place.
Amplifier 343 has an input circuit 345 supplied by a secondary winding 346 of an input transformer 347. Transformer 347 has a primary winding 348 of which one terminal is grounded and the other terminal is connected by a wire 349 to a movable contact 350 of the relay 335. The movable contact 350 acts as a changeover with a contact 350a normally off, connected to the wire 331 and with a contact 351 normally closed.
The fixed normally closed contact 351 is connected, via a wire 352 to a terminal 353 of a compensating network of the recording, this terminal 353 being connected to a junction 354 via a resistor. 355 and a capacitor 356 connected in parallel. Terminal 353 is connected through a capacitor 357, to a grounded junction 358, which is itself connected via a resistor 360 and a wire 361 to a fixed 362 normally open and combined with the moving contact 336 of the relay 335.
Returning to wire 352, this wire continues to terminal 364 of the windings of the magnetic recording and reading head 365. As indicated in the description of this head, two connected windings are provided. As long as no separate erase winding is provided, the head can have two terminals. The windings 365 have their third terminal connected by a wire to a junction 369. From this junction 369, a wire 370 goes to a high frequency oscillator 371.
The oscillator superimposes a high frequency in the recording head, as is well known, this high frequency can be anywhere in the range of about 30,000 cycles per second, to 150,000 cycles per second or more, as desired.
As the construction of such an oscillator and its details are well known, no detailed illustration has been made. The output of oscillator 371 is continued by a wire 372 connected to a fixed contact 372a of relay 335. A movable contact 373 of this grounded relay cooperates with a normally closed contact 374 connected to junction 369 of wire 368. It is understood that the wires 370 and 372 are traversed by the high frequency of the oscillator 371 and that the oscillator itself is supplied with energy by a suitable source which is not shown. The relay can turn off the oscillator for listening. Volume controls for recording and listening are provided.
A resistance element 382 of the recording volume control is connected between a junction 381 and earth. A plug 383 mounted on the resistor 382 is connected by a wire 384 to a contact 385 normally open, conjugated, with a movable contact 386 of the recording-listening relay in pourer. The mo bile contact 386 is also conjugated with a normally closed contact 387 connected to a wiper socket 389 of a potentiometer 390 to control the volume while listening. Potentio meter 390 has a grounded terminal and has a junction 391 connected to junction 381 through an insulating network consisting of a resistor 392 and a capacitor 393 connected in parallel.
Junction 391 is connected to amplifier 343 by wire 392a. For simplicity, amplifier 343 is shown with an interior amplifier stage 377, the low frequency channel being shown. From junction 391, a wire 394 goes to resistor 395 of a variable resistor having a wiper plug 396 connected through capacitor 397 to a normally closed contact 398 of relay 335. Normally closed contact 398 is combined with a moving contact 399 of the relay, this moving contact being earthed.
The variable resistor 395 acts as a tone control, and the capacitor 397 is chosen to be combined with the resistor and thereby perform this control.
Referring again to the handset, the insulating levers 328 and 329 are provided to control a battery of contacts to effect the contacts and cuts. The handle 328 is provided to act on a contact blade 403. The contact blade 403 carries an insulating block 404 directed downwards and touching a blade 405 so that the blade 405 descends as the blade 403 descends as a result of the movement. actuation of the lever 328. The contact blade 405 descends independently of the blade 403 when the insulating lever 329 is tilted to the left. A contact blade 406 is the remaining mobile contact, which is controlled by a finger of the joystick 329 when this joystick is tilted to the right.
Contact blade 403 is provided to close against contact 408. Contact blade 405 is normally closed against contact 409 but is adapted to move away from it and close against contact 410 when depressed. The movable contact blade 406 is provided to close against a contact 412 when depressed downward.
The three movable contact blades 403, 405, and 406 are connected together and are connected by a wire 414 to a grounded terminal 415, of a low voltage power supply 416. As shown here, the power supply 416 is intended to provide direct current at 12 volts. However, this is given by way of example, and the power supply can be supplied at any desired voltage.
Direct current is preferred to avoid the snoring trouble when reading caused by alternating currents.
The power supply may be the normal supply and may consist of a step-down transformer supplied by the conventional 110 volts 60 periods (or 50 periods) mains with rectifiers and filters. The power supply 416 has a terminal 415 earthed as indicated above and on its other terminal is connected a power wire 418. The wire 418 is connected on the other hand to a terminal d '' a reverse clutch coil 419, a terminal of a forward clutch coil 420, a coil terminal 335 of the record-play 335 reversing relay relay and < B> to a terminal of a ringing coil 421.
A capacitor 422 is mounted between the terminals of the coil of the forward clutch to prevent arcing on contact.
The reverse clutch coil 419 is connected by a wire 425 to the contact 412. The forward clutch coil 420 is connected by a wire 426 to the contact 410. The coil of the record-play relay 335 is connected. to a junction 427 which is itself connected by a wire 428 to the contact 408 of the handset. Junction 427 is also connected to a switch 430 mounted in switch box 162. Switch 430 has its other terminal connected to lower terminal 421 of the ringing coil.
The apparatus operates as follows Assuming that the apparatus is supplied with power and that the amplifiers are in standby condition and that the engine is running, one can record by pressing the joystick 328 of the handset. When this is done, contacts 403 and 408 close the record-play relay circuit 335. The various relay contacts move from the positions shown to the non-normal positions for recording. At the same time, contacts 405 and 410 close the circuit of the clutch coil 420 in the forward direction. The motor will drive the belt in the forward direction.
At this time, it can be observed that if the switch 430 is closed for lack of belt, or because the belt tensioning roller is not raised, or because the carriage containing the reproducer is at the end of the position d 'recording, the buzzer 421 will be powered at the same time as the recording-reading relay. Thus, a warning will be given.
Assuming everything is in order and the belt is moving forward, the microphone-speaker transducer 326 functioning as a microphone will give vocal currents through wires 331 and 332. Wire 332 is grounded. earth while wire 331 is connected to contact 350a in its record-read relay working position. Since the moving contact 350 is in the non-normal (or working) position, the voice currents will be transmitted to the winding 348 of the input transformer 347. The low frequency circuit of the amplifier 343 includes the wire. 392 going to junction 391 and from there across the network to junction 381.
The voltages from the wiper socket 383 are conducted to the relay contact 385 to the moving contact 386 in the working position and from there to the input of the amplifier stage 377. The low frequency channel continues through the other stages of the switch. amplifier 343 and the output rate of this amplifier goes to the primary winding 340 of the output transformer 339. The secondary winding 338 has one terminal grounded and its other terminal is connected by wire 337 and by moving contact 336 in the working position, by contact 362, normally open, then, through the network of resistors, at junction 353.
The circuit continues from this junction to junction 364, then through the windings of the recording head, and through wire 368 it passes through the oscillator, then through wire 372 arrives at the normally open contact 372a, and to the mobile contact 373 in the working position, and from there to the earth.
It is understood that the low frequency channel and the high frequency channel of the oscillator can be connected together through transformers or capacitors, in a manner well known in the art. As long as the isolating lever 328 is kept pressed and assuming the magnetic recording head does not reach the end of the track, recording will occur.
If the isolating lever 329 of the handset is tilted to the left, the contacts 405 and 410 close for listening. Closing contacts 405 and 4:10 feeds the clutch coil forward so that the belt will be driven forward as well as during recording. However, the record-play relay is not powered. High frequency oscillator 371 is shorted or cut, and the windings of magnetic pickup 365 have their upper terminal grounded.
The currents produced in the windings 365 flow through the wire 352, pass through the normally closed contact 351 and into the movable contact 350 in the rest position, and pass through the winding 348 of the input transformer. Currents are then fed into the input of low frequency amplifier 343, the channel comprising wire 392 up to junction 391. From junction 391 a circuit goes through the tone control, to ground, and another circuit goes, through the monitor volume control, through contacts 387 and 386 to amplifier stage 377 and the channel continues to the output of the low frequency amplifier.
The output channel goes to the primary 340 of the output transformer 339 and to the secondary 338. The circuit of the secondary 338 goes through wire 337 and contacts 336 and 334, and through wire 331 to transformer 326 operating as high. -speaker.
When the handset isolating lever 329 is tilted to the right, the moving contact 406 closes against the contact 412. This closes the reverse clutch coil circuit 419, and causes the recording belt to drive in. the direction of reverse. At the same time, handset switch contacts 405 and 409, which are normally closed, short-circuit the microphone-to-speaker transducer coil 326.
With low impedances (around 50 ohms) for the transducer and for the output transformer, and a relatively poor short circuit due to the connections and contacts 405 and 409, the faster reverse travel of the belt will give some reproduction to a relatively low volume, this reproduction being unintelligible because the belt moves in the opposite direction.
It should be noted that the alarm sound coil 421 will only be powered, assuming that the switch 430 is closed, if the record-play relay is powered. This means that the alarm buzzer will only be powered during recording.
The alarm system described here can be easily used or adapted for other types of dictation devices, and can easily be used with a device having a screw feed, whether that feed is used with magnetic recording or with a recording in which a recording track is engraved or formed in the surface of a belt.
The marker mechanism described here can also be used with different types of dictation devices.
The recording belt tensioning mechanism and driving mechanism can also be applied and used with other types of dictation devices or, generally, recording and reproducing devices. recording and playback as well as its editing can be used with other types of magnetic belt machines. With regard to the head and its assembly, it is necessary that the part of this head following the track is in contact with the recording belt in a region where this belt is firmly supported.
Thus, as shown in FIG. 19, the part of the head which follows the track is in contact with the belt at a point where the belt has just come out of the mandrel 25, or just arrives at this mandrel depending on the direction of travel of the belt. There may be a slight curvature of the belt at the point contacted by the laminated sheets of the recording and playback head so that after a certain time of use, the laminated sheet will wear a little and accommodate . to the slight curvature of the belt.
Preferably, the contact region of the track and the laminated sheet of the head 272 and the portion of the upper recording belt carried by the mandrel, should satisfy the following condition. A straight line drawn from the center of the bar 181 and tangent to a portion of the belt supported by the mandrel should be the location of the track region where the contact between the laminated sheet and the belt is made.
As a result of this relationship, the laminated sheet will cooperate with the belt both in one direction of belt travel and in the other. If the portion of the blade following the track touches the belt above or below the desired region, then in either direction of the belt travel, clamping may occur between the belt and the blade. As a rule, the recording and playback head can be adjusted relative to the medium 203 to have the maximum reproduction volume.
It is understood that a switch may be provided to stop the electric motor and allow the power supply to the amplifying and oscillating parts of the system so that the device can be used without having to wait for one or more to heat up. several vacuum tubes. It is also possible to provide additional controls, such as, for example, controls operated by hand or by foot by a secretary, during reproduction only.
