Method of Knitting Fully Proportioned Panties and Panties Obtained by This Method The present invention comprises a method of knitting a fully proportioned panty.
This process is characterized in that afro to obtain a flat blank, one knits a first series of rows of stitches to form a first part of the body of the bat, then one knits a second series of rows of stitches to form an intermediate part called a fork, and finally a third series of rows of stitches are sorted to form a second part of the body, by widening and narrowing some of these parts during knitting so as to fully proportion the panties, then in that said first and second body parts are connected on their corresponding edges.
The invention also comprises a fully proportioned panty obtained by means of this method, characterized in that it is constituted by a single piece of selvedge knitting, in that it comprises a front part and a rear part connected on their corresponding edges and a part called a fork which extends between the lower edges of the front and rear parts and is integral therewith.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, two embodiments of the panty which the invention comprises and illustrates, also by way of example, particular implementations of the process which also comprises the invention. tion.

Fig. 2 is an elevation of said completed embodiment.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of area 3 of FIG. 1 and shows how to use an extra thread- for. strengthen the crotch of the panties.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 1 and shows the outline of a second embodiment of the panty.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of this second completed embodiment.
Fig. 6 is a schematic view on a large scale of the general area 6 of FIG. 4 and re presents a particular type of point or mesh closure which can be used at the size of the panty; Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the area 7 of FIG. 4 and shows how the garment is widened to form part of the crotch.
The panties shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is entirely diminished and formed of synthetic overstrain yarns. This term designates here threads which may belong to different types of synthetic threads, which are treated in such a way as to make them elastic; they are thermoplastic in nature and include cellulose acetate yarns, polyamide yarns such as Nylon, polyester yarns such as Dacron, acrylonitrile yarns such as Orlon and all other synthetic yarns and thermoplastics with the desired characteristics.
These yarns are treated, in accordance with any well-known commercial methods, so as to acquire a woolly appearance; these methods consist of increasing the elasticity of the yarn, generally by giving it a high over-twist, and sometimes by crimping it in any desired manner. According to these methods, the elasticity of artificial yarns is increased by subjecting them to a number of turns producing an over-twist, stabilizing the twist, and finally untwisting the yarns.
One or more wires can be used, as desired; two yarns which have already undergone a high twist in opposite directions are generally twisted together, and the yarn has a generally fluffy appearance, as can be seen more or less schematically in FIG. 3; this yarn has a tendency to undulate, that is to say to crimp, so that the stitches of a knitting formed by this yarn have an irregular shape and the knitting is elastic in all directions.
By using such a yarn in a proportionate-knit or flat-table knitting machine of standard dimensions, as is usually done to make fully diminished stockings, a panty can be formed which would normally require a significantly greater width than that. of the needle table of such a machine; with this type of yarn, the panties have sufficient elasticity to adapt correctly to people of different builds.
If we now consider fig. 1, we see there a number of elements carrying the yarn or throwers 10r 10b and 10 ", which are mounted on rods 11 belonging to a knitting machine with proportional knitting or flat table, The throwers 10 are driven by a reciprocating motion, with a single thrower or several throwers moving at a time, as desired, in order to advance one or more yarns through a number of knitting needles (not shown) so that the yarn (s) be knitted in a series of rows of stitches in a manner well known in the art of making fully decreased stockings.
By actuating these throwing members, in a desired manner, and by using one or more of these members, one can vary from time to time the width of the sorted garment, and one can also introduce, if desired, a thread additional or reinforcement in different areas of the garment.
The panty blank shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 is fully proportionate. It is designated as a whole by the reference number 12. A certain number of these blanks are knitted in a continuous series by the machine; we can then separate them from each other near the waist area and form with each blank a finished panty in the manner that will be described a little later.
If we consider the lower part of fig. 1, it can be seen that, in order to start the knitting of a series of blanks 12, a certain number of initial rows of stitches 20 are formed on the edge; It should also be noted that the thrower 10b is used to supply body yarn to knitting implements over a significant portion of the width of the knitter, and that additional like members 10r serve to introduce additional or reinforcing yarn into a knitting machine. a number of needles, in relatively small number, near the edges of the blank, in order to form on each edge a reinforced zone indicated at 21.
When a small number of rows of stitches 20 have been knitted in this way, one or more additional rows of stitches consisting of a closure stitch are knitted at 22, these closure stitches serving to define the panty waist edges. The knitting tools are then activated to form a first part of the body of the panty, this first part being in this case the front part indicated at 23. Since it is generally desirable that the panty be notably narrower at the waist. that in the center of the body, the initial rows of stitches in the body preferably have a width less than the maximum width of the blank.
If desired, you can knit a number of rows of stitches of equal width, then make increases on the following rows to form the first part of the body. In the illustrated embodiment, several rows of stitches are knitted using the yarn feeders 10b and 10e, and these rows are gradually increased, as desired, for example at the rate of two ribbing. all eight rows at a time for a desired number of rows, thereby forming increase marks 24 near the edges of body part 23. Of course, one can use an increase of any desired value, so as to shape the blank as desired.
The knitting tools are then actuated to knit the central area of part 23 by means of rectilinear knitting, that is to say by knitting rows of stitches of the same width for any desired number of rows. This central area of part 23 is preferably the same width throughout, but can be widened or narrowed as desired to make a particular garment.
When a number of rows of stitches in that part of the body have been knitted, the knitting tools are operated so as to shrink the knitting for a desired number of rows, in order to begin the forming of a split 25. can for example narrow the knitting at the rate of two ribs on each side of each row of stitches, and this for a certain number of rows, then then shrink the knitting at the rate of two ribs every two rows of stitches, and this for one a certain additional number of rows, and in all cases in the vicinity of the edges.
This shrinking operation defines the upper front part of the fork, and the strings of the latter define the edges of the openings provided in the panty which is finished for the passage of the legs; it is therefore desirable to continue the reinforcement 21 on the edges of this area.
When the shrinking or shrinking operation is completed, the central part of the fork is formed by straight knitting for a desired number of rows of mail. The knitting is then widened, to form the other face of the fork 25, that is to say the upper rear part of the latter, by widening by two ribs every two rows of stitches, for a certain number. rows, and then widening two ribs every ten rows for a certain additional number of rows.
These increases form marks 27 in the knitting and allow the blank 12 to be given a significantly more elongated curvature at the other end of the fork 25, which end is slightly different from that formed at the start of the shaping of the fork. . This elongated curvature is desired to form the rear portion of the garment, since the edges of the blank in this area also define the rear portions of the leg openings, and this area of the knit also forms the bottom of the garment.
A rear part 28 of the body is then formed by a rectilinear knitting of several rows of stitches; the number of these rows can be chosen as desired, but it is preferably equal to or slightly greater than that of the rows of rec tilinear knitting stitches used to form the front part 23.
The blank 12 is then narrowed at 30 to form the upper rear part of the waist, the decreases 30 corresponding substantially to the increases 24 in the upper front part of the waist. One or more rows of closure points 31, similar to closure points 22, are formed to define the rear top edge or size of the rear body portion of the blank. After having executed these stitches 31, several additional rows of stitches 20 can be knitted, in order to make a sectioning zone, and then another panty blank 12 in a manner analogous to the previous one.
It will be noted that the reinforcing wire carried by the members 10r forms a relatively narrow reinforcing strip 21 over the entire length of the edges of the blank. This reinforced band 21 is extremely desirable in the area of the openings reserved for the legs, since it further serves to define and reinforce these openings, at the same time as to apply them perfectly to the legs. This reinforcing thread can be omitted, if desired, on the edges of the body of the panties.
In some cases, it may be desirable to remove the reinforcement zone 21 around the leg openings; in these cases, it seems necessary to sew an elastic material around these openings when the panties are finished.
Lace, braid or other decoration may be attached to the panties around the leg openings if desired.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 - 3, the fork is reinforced at 34. This reinforcement can be achieved by using one of the throwing members 10, for example in the present case the member 10c, to provide the knitting tools with an additional reinforcing thread. which is knitted with the body yarn all over the sur face to reinforce.
This reinforcing thread carried by the member 10c is introduced on the needles at point 35, and on a gradually increasing number of needles so as to widen the reinforcing zone as seen at 36. Zone 25 of the fork is then reinforced in its entire central part, then the reinforcing wire extends over a greater width as seen at 37 to conform to the widening 27 of the fork. The reinforcement then narrows at 38 and ends at 39, thus forming a slightly wider reinforcement zone in the lower part of the bottom of the panty.
It will be noted that the reinforced zone 34 is spaced from the reinforced -bisière 21, leaving an unreinforced area 39 between it and the latter. This unreinforced area 39 has greater elasticity than the reinforced area, and therefore makes it possible to achieve a better and more comfortable fit of the finished garment. The particular configuration of the reinforced zone of the fork can be varied, as desired; as a general rule, it is desirable to have more reinforcement near the rear part at the bottom of the panties than in its front part. Fig. 3 clearly shows the arrangement of the reinforced wire in the area of the fork; the reinforced wire is designated by r and the body wire by b.
The waistband of the panty, that is to say its upper edge, is defined by the closure points 22 and 31, which are provided to allow the successive blanks to be separated from each other without producing fraying in the panty. the panties finished. Any type of closing stitch or picot stitch can be used; in general, a few rows of stitches 20 are knitted between seams 22 and 31 and the knitting is cut in zone 20; we shape the belt in a desired way whatever conch.
The upper edge of the panties can be folded back on itself and sewn so as to form a hem, which constitutes a generally sufficient belt thanks to the elasticity of the thread. It is, however, desirable in some instances to knit additional yarn (not shown) near the upper edges of the panties to form a border for use as a belt; you can then use a hem stitch at the top edge of the panty; you can also use the extra thread tape without hemstitch.
In order to have an even greater elasticity in the area of the waistband, it is in certain cases possible to introduce a rubber thread or any elastic thread in the knitting tools, while the execution of several rows of stitches in the vicinity of the knitting tools. upper edges of the panties, so as to form an elastic waistband. In other cases, it may be desired to attach to the upper edge of the panty a cord and / or an elastic band, as seen at 40 in FIG. 2 to form the belt.
As already indicated, the configuration of the blank can be modified as desired by varying the increases and decreases in the number of stitches. As an example, here is how we can proceed. The blank is formed with over-twist wire. The first rows of stitches are given a width of 352 stitches, thus knitting 52 rows of the same width to form the first part of the body. The number of stitches on each side is then increased by two stitches every eight rows, and this widening operation is carried out 24 times, which corresponds to a total number of 192 rows of stitches.
The central part of the body is then formed by knitting 228 rows of stitches of the same width; then the first part of the fork is formed by decreasing each row by two stitches on each side, and this decrease is applied to 34 rows; after that there is a decrease of two stitches every two rows for 34 rows, the first of these decreases forming marks such as 41. The middle part of the crotch is obtained by knitting 200 rows of the same width.
The rear part of the crotch, which also constitutes part of the bottom of the crotch, is knitted by performing 61 increases, at the rate of an increase of 2 mail every 2 rows of stitches for 122 rows; you then widen by 2 stitches every 6 rows of stitches, and this increase is carried out 6 times, i.e. for a total of 36 rows of stitches.
To form the back part of the body, knit 94 rows of equal width, then widen 4 rows to make marks 42, and then knit 134 rows of the same width. The back part of the body is formed by decreasing 2 stitches every 8 rows of stitches, and performing this decrease 24 times, that is, for a total of 192 rows. After that, 52 rows of the same width are knitted to form the waistband of the lotte cu. Panties shaped in this manner have been found to be extremely satisfactory for people of average build.
After having knitted the blanks 12 as we have just explained, they are separated from each other along the zone 20 then the edges of the parts 23 and 28 of the body are joined together, by a seam for example or by a similar means. , and one can then add any desired belt 40 to form the finished panty P shown in FIG. 2.
It is possible to modify the dimensions of the or vertures intended for the legs by changing the place where the lower edges of the edges of the two parts of the body of the panties meet. It is frequently desirable, during the knitting operation, to make decrease marks 41 where the crotch decreases begin and increase marks 42 where the crotch increases end. fork. The position of these marks 41 and 42 may vary, and they may serve as indications of the particular point where the stitching of the straps of the two parts of the body of the panties should be started.
The panties shown were considered to be front to back knitted, but of course they can be knitted from back to front, obviously performing the corresponding increases and decreases. It is frequently desired to have a larger knitting surface in the back portion; We knit the back part first, then we narrow and widen to form the crotch, and finally we knit the front part.
While it is extremely desirable to use stretchable yarn to form the fully proportioned panty just described, such panty can also be knitted with ordinary yarn of any type, preferably nylon yarn. In this case, it is necessary to use a fully proportioned sorting or flat-table knitting machine having in each section a significantly greater number of needles than in ordinary machines of this kind used for the manufacture of knitting. low. Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 show an embodiment of the panty which can be made in this way using ordinary yarn, that is to say a non-stretch yarn.
In this embodiment, the parts similar to those of the embodiment of FIGS. 1, 2, 3, bear the same reference signs affected by the sign prime.
The panty is formed by ordinary knitting tools (not shown) to which the yarns are supplied by feed carrying or throwing members 10r ', lob' and 10c 'actuated by rods 11'. Starting at the bottom of the fi-. 4, we see that we first form several rows of stitches 20 ', then at least one row of closing stitches or picot stitches 22', and that the front part 23 'of the body is then knitted.
The front part 23 'of the body is knitted in much the same way as in the first embodiment, with this difference, however, that the width at the place of the waistband, i.e. line 22 'is notably larger.
The panty is also widened in 24 'over several rows of stitches, but this widening is not as marked and does not extend over as great a length as in the first embodiment. You can knit a reinforcing thread in several ribs along the selvedges, as in 21 ', if desired; in the figure, this thread is shown in the crotch area, but does not exist in the body parts of the panties.
When the panties are formed by a golden yarn, that is to say non-stretchy, it is obvious that a sufficient quantity of knitting must be provided near the waist so that this knitting can be gathered and that the panties can adapt to the person's hips. After knitting a predetermined and desired number of rows of stitches, while widening each side as seen in 24 ', a predetermined number of rows of stitches are knitted in a straight line to form the main part of the front part 23 ' from the body.
The fork 25 'is then formed by tightening the knitting tools inwardly during a certain number of rows of stitches as seen at 26', the edges of this zone defining the beginning of the openings intended for the legs. .
In this panty, it is extremely desirable to provide additional shaping in the crotch area to achieve a better fit of the panty, while in the first embodiment the central part of the crotch was preformed. ference by knitting in a straight line.
In the blank 12 ', the decreases 26' continue, although to a gradually decreasing degree, approximately to the central part of the zone 25 'of the fork. The knitting tools are actuated at this right so as to gradually widen the knitting, as at 27 ', throughout the rest of the fork.
When the crotch 25 'has been knitted in this way, the rear part 28' of the body is worked over several rows of stitches of the same width, then the upper back edge of this part is shaped to an extent limited by decreases 30 '. . Additional closing stitches 31 ', of any desired type, are then knitted so as to prevent fraying at this location. A new zone 20 'and a new panty are then formed by the knitting tools.
This embodiment has in the fork, a reinforced zone 34 ′ similar to the zone 34 of the first embodiment and obtained in a similar manner. This reinforcement is shaped at the beginning and at the end, respectively in 36 'and 38'; it can extend into the reinforcement 21 'and form part of it, if desired; however, since it is formed by a different carrying member, it is practically better to leave one or two ribs 39 'between the reinforcement zones 34' and 21 '.
When the blank 12 'is finished, the edges of the parts 23' and 28 'can be sewn together at 50 to form a panty P'; a suitable belt 40 ', preferably elastic, can be attached to the waist edges of the panties; in this case, the panties are gathered at 51, where the belt 40 'is attached. In this type of panties P ', we need extra reinforcement around the leg openings; this reinforcement can be constituted by an elastic band, a braid, a decorative braid or lace, or an edging 52, which can be fixed by stitching points 53 around the edges forming the openings of the legs.
It is seen in fig. 6, schematically and on a large scale, how the meture iron stitches or the picot stitches can be formed on row 31 '. Fig. 6 represents the general zone 6 of FIG. 4. As already indicated, any desired type of iron stitch can be used to prevent fraying which might occur after separation of two adjacent blanks.
It will be noted in fig. 6 that the line of the closing stitches 31 ', at the junction of the zones 20' and 28 ', comprises three rows of stitches indicated in CI, C2 and C3; we will also notice that two adjacent stitches taken on two adjacent ribs, in the last row of stitches in zone 28 ', are first knitted with a single stitch of the row of stitches CI, the yarn of this row CI being caught by the hooks of the needles to form the stitches; the hooks then move, take the yarn from the next adjacent rib and transfer it back to the original rib, so that the stitches in the CI row are roughly eight-shaped.
The intermediate row C2 is then knitted in the usual way, that is to say with a stitch in each rib. After that, the next row of stitches C3 is knitted in the same way as row CI. Therefore, if the knitting is sectioned at any point beyond of the row of Cl, stitches it does not unravel.
Fig. 7 is a large-scale view showing how the fork 34 'is widened at its junction with the reinforced selvedge 21'. Note that the fabric is knitted from bottom to top in fig. 7 and that the rows of stitches are formed in the directions indicated by the arrows.
As the successive rows of mail are knitted, the area 34 'widens from row to row to form the increase stitches 27'. The reinforcement yarn r 'is knitted with the yarn b' of the body in the zone 34 'which constitutes the reinforcement of the fork. An additional reinforcing yarn s r is knitted with the yarn b 'of the body in the zone 21' of the selvage to reinforce this zone.
The manner of adding reinforcement yarn and widening the knit is well known in the art of knitting fully reduced stockings, and therefore it has not been considered necessary to describe it in detail here.
There has been described an embodiment knitted entirely with over-twist yarn and an embodiment knitted with ordinary yarn; it is of course understood, however, that these two kinds of yarn can be combined in any way to produce another embodiment of the panty. In panty P, for example, it may be desirable to knit certain areas with ordinary non-elastic yarn, for the purpose of reinforcement or decoration. A reinforced zone can extend, for example, through the entire central part of zones 23 and 28, and this reinforced zone can be formed of an over-twisted and elastic thread or of a non-elastic thread.
It is also possible to wish to use threads of different types (such as nylon or Dacron) in different parts of the panties.
In panty P, it may be extremely desirable to knit certain areas with over-twist yarn, or to reinforce certain areas with this type of yarn, any such combination can be used.
When the panty has been manufactured as explained, it can be subjected to finishing operations, as in the technique of making knitted and fully diminished stockings. It can for example be washed, shaped, mounted on a template, treated with softeners or other materials to improve its appearance and make it softer to the touch.
The panties shown and described may be made of a relatively heavy yarn for use as swimwear and the like, or of a relatively heavy and elastic yarn to then serve as garter belts. If a relatively light over-twist yarn like that used in a woman's stocking is used, the panty will have sufficient elasticity to hold a tampon or the like without any other support.
The word cu lotte has been used constantly throughout the present description, but this word must be given a quite general meaning and taken to include, not only women's and children's underwear, but also men's briefs and shorts.
