<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The main object of the present invention is to provide a stocking, the foot of which fits closely and perfectly to the foot of the wearer and which is free of seams and irregular loose parts, which are very inconvenient. to wear, thereby producing a stocking of a very elegant appearance and of a highly desirable quality.
It is also an object of the invention to save time and material in the manufacture of hosiery articles.
The main characteristic of the invention consists in the new manufacture of the bottom point, which is knitted in two halves which are then joined together by re-meshing, with formation of a gusset between the contiguous edges to produce the widening. of the tip.
On the attached drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the stocking according to the invention as it appears when worn.
Fig. 2 is a. side elevation view of the bottom leg shown flat,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view, showing the knitting of the point, after its knitting, but prior to the joining of the two halves of the point by re-meshing, while FIG. 4 is a detail showing a midified shape of the gusset.
In the manufacture of this stocking, which is made on a seamless knitting machine, heel A and foot B are formed in the usual manner, the latter extending to point C, where the foot is treaded. the machine so as to knit the upper and lower segments of the point separately and simultaneously.
Decrease the length of each successive row of stitches, in the two upper and lower segments, by disabling one or more needles, as usual in pointless knitting. In this way, a point is produced which decreases in width in both directions from point C.
Needle disabling continues until the row is reached with the minimum number of stitches at the tip end, then continues knitting on one of the top two segments or bottom of the point, to form a gusset D. This gusset is formed by first putting in action a sufficient number of needles, in the upper half or in the lower half, to knit a row of stitches along the edge of this upper or lower part of the point. In this row of stitches, a smaller number of stitches is worked than the number of stitches around the edge of the toe segment, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
A certain number of needles are put into action to knit the row. of edge stitches, and then increase the length of the immediately following row of stitches, resetting one or more needles, and so on, so that each of the successive rows of stitches in the gusset increases in length, for example following the activation of one or more additional needles, thus producing a whistle shape at the end of the gusset. The gusset preferably comprises 6 to 8 rows of mail-

them in width and is of a length less than that of the point segment on which it is knitted.
If desired, the gusset can be formed by decreasing the length of successive rows of stitches, as shown in fig. 4.
When the gusset is finished, we put in action all the rest of the needles of the machine and we knit several rows of stitches to the edge, of the gusset and to the edges of the segments of the point, to form the back-stitch rows, E shown in fig. 2. The desired row of re-meshing stitches is then placed on a re-meshing machine, and the edges of the upper and lower segments, knitted separately, are joined together by the line of re-meshing loops F, which runs all the way around. the end of the point,
By forming the point by simultaneously knitting the two parts thereof, a considerable saving in working time is achieved. :
the knitting machine, and consequently the manufacturer will be able to produce a considerably increased number of stockings at the same time of work.
In making the toe of a silk stocking or fine yarn stocking as described, you can continue to use the top yarn for the desired distance in the upper segment of the toe, and you can then replace it with cotton yarn or reinforcement yarn, while the entire lower segment of the foot can be knitted with cotton yarn, if desired. By continuing to use the top of the foot yarn, which is tightly knitted, in the top segment of the toe, the length of the top of the foot is significantly shortened, and an excellent fitting stocking is produced. at the foot.
Insertion of the gusset D around the narrow end of the toe extends the beginning of the decrease or narrowing of the toe segments much further than usual rearward towards the sole of the foot, as the gusset widens the narrow end and decreases in width and stops a short distance from the entire length of the toe segments. and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
removes excess material that forms folds and pockets at the ends of the rise and fall line.
The stocking according to the invention can advantageously be manufactured on the type of knitting machine known as a "split foot" machine, which uses a double feed of yarn for the entire bottom foot.
