Apparatus for detaching a wet cement-based pipe from a mandrel The present invention relates to an apparatus for detaching a wet cement-based pipe from a mandrel. mandrel on which it adheres due to the fact that it has just been formed there, by means of an electric current flowing between the pipe and the mandrel to form a layer of gas by electrolysis between these elements. An apparatus of this type can be used, for example, in the manufacture of asbestos cement pipes.
The usual method of manufacturing asbestos cement pipes consists in winding a wet strip of asbestos cement paste on a rotating hollow mandrel of a press and at the same time subjecting it to high pressure. When a pipe has been formed, the mandrel with the pipe is removed from the press and then the mandrel is withdrawn for drying of the pipe. However, as a result of the pressure applied to the material during its winding, the latter adheres strongly to the mandrel and the extraction of the latter presents difficulties.
In known devices, this mandrel is coated beforehand with oil or wax, which prevents the pipe from sticking. However, the material which is to form the pipe can slip on the man-drin during the formation of the pipe and very distorted pipes are then obtained.
In other known devices, air is compressed between the formed pipe and its mandrel while this pipe is subjected to a calendering action, but it frequently happens that the pipe is only partially peeled off, cer- tains parts still adhering to the mandrel; internal cracks and tensions occur in the pipe wall and excessive structural deformations of the pipe, i.e. changes in dimensions and mechanical strength.
In order to obtain sufficient strength to prevent the formation of cracks, internal stresses or defects in uniformity, it is necessary to give an excessive thickness to the wall of the pipe and, after demoulding, to remove this excess thickness.
In other known devices, the mandrel is quickly brought to a temperature above 100 ° C., so as to transform the water contained in the material constituting the adjacent wall of the pipe into a layer of steam intended to separate the pipe from its sound. forming chuck. These devices give good results as regards demoulding, but heating the mandrel causes too rapid partial drying of the internal part of the pipe and a consequent reduction in its resistance.
In addition, the expansion of the mandrel under the action of heat, together with the sudden formation of steam, deforms the pipe.
In other known devices, an electric current flows through the wall of the pipe, between the mandrel constituting an electrode and a metal screen constituting the other electrode, while the mandrel rotates, with a view to forming, by electrolysis. , a layer of gas between the pipe and the mandrel. These devices have never been used with success because of the difficulty of making good electrical contact between the screen and the pipe.
Poor contact will only allow incomplete separation of the pipe from its mandrel and cause excessive damage to the outer surface of the pipe by arcing.
The apparatus of the present invention enables a wet pipe to be separated from a man drin without appreciably affecting the mechanical strength of the pipe, or its uniformity or dimensions, even if the wall thickness of the pipe is. low.
This separation is caused by the slow and uniform formation of a thin layer of gas between the pipe and the mandrel, without significantly raising the temperature of one or the other of these elements.

The apparatus which will be described is used in particular for the manufacture of asbestos-cement pipes, but it is understood that it could be used for the treatment of objects made of other wet plastics.
In the embodiment shown, the apparatus comprises a hollow steel mandrel 2 on which a pipe 4 of wet asbestos cement has been formed, the assembly of the mandrel and the pipe forming a block and being supported by means of two pairs. collars 6 and 8 on which rest the ends of the mandrel not recou green by the pipe. Each pair of collars 6 and 8 is attached to a steel roller 10, respectively 12, these rollers being located on either side of a vertical plane passing through the axis of the mandrel. In a variant, the pipe-mandrel assembly could be supported directly by the rollers 10 and 12, the collars 6 and 8 not existing and the outer surface of the pipe being in contact with the rollers.
The ends of the rollers 10 and 12 are mounted in bearings carried by uprights 14 and 16 of a frame, uprights formed by angles 18, 20, 22, 24 (FIG. 2), connected by spacers 26, 28 and 30.
The two ends of the frame are connected by longitudinal spacers formed by tubes 32 and 34.
At one end of each of the rollers 10 and 12 is fixed a pinion 36, driven by another pinion 38. This pinion 38 is fixed on a shaft 40, driven in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 4 by a motor not shown. The arrangement is such that the rollers 10 and 12 and, consequently, the collars 6 and 8, rotate in the same direction and, consequently, drag in rotation the assembly formed by the pipe and the mandrel.
A housing 42 is fitted to the end uprights of the frame, so as to be able to move vertically. This casing is provided with a bracket 44 at its ends. To each bracket 44 is fixed the end of a chain 46 which passes over a toothed wheel 48 which can rotate on the upper cross member 26 of the frame (FIG. 2). Each chain then passes under a first toothed wheel 50, then over a second toothed wheel 52, these toothed wheels being respectively fixed to shafts 54 and 56 mounted on the frame. At the lower end of each chain is fixed a counterweight 58, comprising a little less than half the weight of the housing 42.
On the shaft 54, on the inner side with respect to the toothed wheel 50, is mounted another toothed wheel 60, to which is fixed, by one end, a chain 62, the other end of which is fixed to a piston rod. 64 of a hydraulic device, shown schematically at 66. When the piston rod 64 goes down, the housing 42 rises. A lock 67 makes it possible to keep the casing in its high position. Near each end of the housing 42 is mounted a threaded rod 68 provided with a handwheel 69. These two threaded rods are each screwed into a nut head 70 disposed at each end of a bar 72 running along the housing 42.
The heads 70 are electrically isolated from the bar 72 by means of insulating washers 74 and insulating sleeves (not shown) which pass through the heads 70, the washers 74 and supports 76 of the bar. This assembly corresponds to that shown in FIG. 10 described below. By rotating the rods 68, the height adjustment of the bar 72 is obtained. On this bar 72 are fixed tabs 78, grouped in pairs and pierced with holes in alignment, intended to receive and support a rod 80. U-shaped yokes 82 are fixed to the bar 80 by means of arms 84. Between side arms 83 of each yoke 82 is fixed a pin 86 (see fig. 8), serving as a support for a contact roller 88 .
Each roller 88 consists of a cylinder 90 of electrically conductive material, in which is partially engaged a contact ring 92 also of conductive material, and by two parts 94 and 96 of insulating material respectively fitted into the cylinder. 90 and in the ring 92. The pieces of insulating material 94 and 96 are mounted so as to be able to rotate on the shaft 86 and to electrically isolate the contact roller 88 from the yokes 82. On one of the arms 83 of each yoke 82 is fixed a brush holder 98 (fig. 6 and 7), the carbon brush 100, elastically applied against the slip ring 92 by a spring 102, is connected to the rod 80 by means of a conductive wire 104 .
Each contact roller 88 may have, for example, a length of about 15 cm. and each is mounted on the rod 80 so as to be able to perform a slight angular displacement. This movement can be obtained either by limited tilting around the rod 80, or by elasticity of the arms 84. Thanks to this device, an irregularity of the periphery of the pipe can only prevent good contact from a single roller on the pipe. , and this momentarily. Thus, sufficient contact is always ensured between all the rollers and the pipe.
On the bar 72 are mounted, suitably insulated, two tabs 106 (fig. 1), on each of which is fixed a tubular part 108 passing through an opening 110 made in the upper part of the housing 42 (fig. 2 and 3). On the upper face of the casing 42, near each opening 110, is arranged a graduated scale 112, with which cooperates an index 114 integral with the tubular part 108, and indicating the exact position of the bar 72. In each tubular part 108 is mounted, so as to slide, a rod 116 provided with an index 118 at its upper end, this index passing through a slot 120 made in the tubular part 108.
The lower end of each rod 116 is made of an insulating material and comes into contact with a stop 122 fixed to one of the yokes 82, so that the index 118, in combination with the graduated scale 112, indicates the position, inside the crankcase, contact rollers 88.
In fig. 9 and 10 there are shown bars rubbing on the ends of the mandrel 2. On the bar 72 is fixed a support 124, of T-shaped section, to which is fixed a second T-shaped support 126. Between these supports is interposed a spacing member 128, made of insulating material, the supports and this spacing member being pierced with holes in alignment. In each group of holes is engaged a sleeve 130 of insulating material and at each end of each sleeve is disposed an insulating washer 132. A fixing bolt 134 passes through the washers and the sleeve and secures the supports and the member. spacing.
The support 126 is thus electrically insulated from the bar 72. As indicated above, the bar 72 is "electrically insulated from the threaded rods 68 by means of a device substantially similar to that which has just been described.
On the support 126 are fixed two U-shaped irons 136, in which is mounted, so as to be able to slide, a block 138 having two cells 140 in its lower face and, fixed on one of its lateral faces, a tab 142 extending towards the bottom. In the core of each iron 136 is formed a slot 144 through which passes a tenon 146 fixed to the block 138. A lower block 148 is fixed to the block 138 by means of a pin 143 passing through holes drilled in alignment in this block 148 and in the tab 142. In the upper face of the block 148 are formed two cells corresponding to the cells 140 of the block 138; in these cells are housed two springs 150 which, in combination with the tenon 143, constitute a resilient tilting assembly for the block 148.
At the lower end of the block 148 is fixed a copper brush 152, partially curved, to which is attached a conductive wire 154.
Fig. 11 gives the diagram of an electric circuit used for controlling the machine described above. Two terminals, 156 and 158, are connected to the output terminals of a direct current generator having, for example, a power of 60 kW, at a voltage of 350 V. A resistor 160 can either bypass this generator or be put on. off, by means of the contacts 162 of a relay 201. The terminals 164 and 166 are respectively connected to the bar 80 supporting the contact rollers and to the conductors 154 of the mandrel brushes. The device shown schematically at 168 is a switch controlling an electric motor for three-phase current 440 V, which drives the shaft 40.
The components 170 and 172 are contacts controlled by a relay 174. A switch 176, capable of being closed by lowering the casing 42, makes it possible to send current to the machine only when all the parts carrying power. current are hidden. Switches 178 and 180, controlled by a button, are intended to close and open a 110 V alternating current circuit which supplies the coils of relay 201 and two time switches 202 and 203. The operation is as follows. in the apparatus the still wet mandrel-pipe assembly by rolling it on a table 200 shown in FIG. 2. Then the threaded rods 68 are rotated until the indexes 114 are in line with the graduation of the scale 112 corresponding to the diameter of the pipe.
The casing is then lowered and if the rollers 88 are in correct contact with the pipe, the index 118 must be located opposite the index 114. The switch 176 having been closed by lowering the casing, we close. switch 178 by hand, so as to establish the control circuit.
With switches 176 and 178 closed, the coil of switch relay 168 closes the contact which sends current to the motor by dragging rollers 10 and 12, thereby causing the hose-mandrel assembly to rotate. At the same time, the coil 174, the time switch 202 and the relay 201 are energized. Coil 174 then closes contact 170 and electrically connects rollers 88 and the mandrel to the direct current generator. Coil 174 also closes contact 172, through which the control circuit is held when allowing switch 178 to return to its normal open position.
The coil of relay 201 closes contacts 162, which turns resistor 160 off and clears it from the field of the direct current generator, thus allowing the voltage applied to the pipe to reach a value sufficient to induce electrolysis.
For standard-size pipes, in cement-asbestos, it has been found that a voltage of 300 V is sufficient and the current can exceed a hundred amperes. As this current passes through the pipe, the water with which it is impregnated is decomposed into its gaseous constituents and if the contact rollers 88 are connected to the positive terminal of the generator, a layer of hydrogen forms between the inner surface of the pipe 4 and the outer surface of the mandrel 2. This hydrogen layer is very thin, but sufficient to break the adhesion between the pipe and the mandrel. Since this layer is formed by a relatively slow migration of gas to the surface of the mandrel, rather than a sudden transformation of moisture into gas, no breaking force is exerted on the pipe.
Considering two rollers 88 moving relative to the adjacent section of pipe, the current flows from the rollers through the pipe, into the mandrel, and even into the part of this guide between the rollers. If a part of the section of the pipe is at a small distance from the mandrel, the intensity of the current passing through the still adhering parts increases, and the intensity of the current flowing through the separated part decreases. Thus the rate of migration of the hydrogen towards the still adherent surfaces is greater, so that a substantially uniform layer of hydrogen forms between the pipe and the mandrel.
If an irregularity of the outer surface of the pipe forces a roller to momentarily interrupt its contact with the pipe, this same compensation phenomenon occurs and the part of the shaft located under said irregularity of the pipe surface ends up being also detached.
At the same time that the resistor 160 is switched off, the operating cycle of the time switch 202 is started and, at the end of this cycle, the duration of which is chosen to allow complete separation, the open contact normally closes and the normally closed contact opens, energizing time switch 203 and de-energizing relay 201. Following de-energization of relay 201, contact 162 opens and puts resistor 160 on. shunt on the direct current generator, which has the effect of lowering the voltage to a relatively low value, that is to say not sufficient to produce damaging arcs when the circuit breaks.
The time switch 203 is set so as to trip after about five seconds, sufficient time to obtain a voltage drop of the direct current generator, before the opening of its normally closed contact. When switch 203, normally closed, opens, the control circuit is cut, which causes de-energization of all relays and cut-off of the motor circuits and contact rollers 88.
At this moment, we can lift the casing and remove the pipe and its mandrel from the machine and place them on a table (not shown) similar to table 200. Note that the voltage is reduced before the circuit is cut. and before lifting the contact rollers and their release from the pipe, so that there is no risk of deterioration of the circuit or the pipe, by production of arcs.
When the hose and mandrel are removed from the apparatus at the end of the described operating cycle, the hose becomes completely detached from the mandrel and can easily be lifted for placement in a dryer. As indicated above, the operation of demolding the pipe has little or no effect on the structure of the pipe.
The gas layer formed by electrolysis between the pipe and the mandrel is very thin; it is not subjected to any expansion; the man drin does not undergo heating. The pipe does not undergo any permanent deformation during demolding and, consequently, no action detrimental to its strength or its dimensions. The starting of arcs is avoided, the external surface of the pipe does not undergo any deterioration. .
Asbestos cement pipes detached by means of the apparatus described have a smooth interior surface, strength and substantially uniform dimensions over their entire length; they require less material than pipes having rough surfaces, areas of lower resistance and irregularities in dimensions or material distribution.
