DISPOSITIF DE CONTACT COULISSANT POUR LA CONDUCTION DE COURANTS
ELECTRIQUES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

SLIDING CONTACT DEVICE FOR CONDUCTING CURRENTS
ELECTRICAL.
The invention relates to electrical appliances and it relates in particular to a device serving to conduct a current of high amperage from a fixed member to a movable member.
In some electrical appliances, such as ,. for example, resistance welding machines, a high current is induced in the secondary winding of the welding transformer and this current is conducted from at least one terminal of the winding to a movable electrode.
In spot welding machines, pressure is applied to the movable electrode to bring this electrode into contact with the workpiece between the latter and a fixed electrode. In continuous seam welding, two wheels are used as electrodes, one of these wheels being driven by a motor and rotating on a fixed support, while the other wheel is mounted on a movable support and its movement. being obtained by friction on the piece to be welded which is in motion.
In the two cases mentioned above, that is to say in spot welding and in continuous welding, bn is faced with the problem of conducting the current from one terminal of the secondary to the mobile electrode in such a way that it can move freely and that there is no loss of harmful current. A well known solution to this problem consists in using flexible conductors connecting a terminal of the secondary of the transformer to the electro-mobile.
Some of these conductors are made of thin copper foils and others are made of a cable formed from a multitude of thin wires. These two types of conductors have a limited life due to mechanical fatigue and vibrations caused by the electrodynamic effect of the high intensity alternating current which they conduct. The heat generated in these conductors by this current also contributes to their disintegration.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
One of the aims of the invention is to create a new and improved device for conducting current from its source to a movable electrode or similar conductor carrying current, this device being of robust construction and capable of being used. continuously without deterioration or appreciable wear.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sliding contact device for connecting the movable electrode of a resistance welding machine to a secondary power circuit terminal of this machine, this device operating in an efficient manner. and such that it avoids all harmful current losses while allowing free movement of the electrode.
Another still more specific object of the invention consists in creating a sliding contact device intended to conduct high intensity currents such as those encountered in resistance welding machines, this device comprising elements of special construction capable to effect a relative movement in such a way that the wear of the sliding surfaces is reduced to a minimum and that a long life is ensured on these surfaces despite heavy service.
Another object of the invention is still to create an improved device mounted with a pivoting movement to conduct high intensity currents, such as those found in resistance welding machines, from the secondary of the transformer to the transformer. 'movable electrode.
Another object of the invention consists in creating a sliding contact system using current conducting bars mounted to pivot to electrically connect a moving part to a fixed part, a contact by surface being ensured between these elements. so as to create large contact surfaces which reduce resistance to current flow between parts.
On the other hand, in the machines mentioned above, for continuous welding, the wheel-shaped electrode rotates in a bearing and current is conducted from the bearing to the wheel shaft. The same bearing must support also the radial load applied to the shaft of the wheel when the latter is brought into contact under pressure with the part.
This radial pressure produces contact between the shaft and the bearing and allows current to flow from one part to another. However, the contact surface between the shaft and the bearing corresponds only to linear contact, resulting in a high concentration of current on the contact surface, which is extremely narrow. If so, the contact conditions become worse and the guidance between the shaft and the bearing is no longer exact. The shaft and bearing must be renewed frequently to keep the machine in good working order.
Having said this, one of the objects of the invention is to create a new and improved arrangement for conducting current from its source to a rotating electrode or similar conductor carrying current, the device employed being of robust construction and. able to operate continuously without appreciable deterioration or wear.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sliding contact device serving to connect the rotary wheel-shaped electrode of a resistance welding machine to a terminal of the secondary power circuit of the machine, this device operating efficiently and in a manner that suppresses harmful current losses while allowing free rotation of the electrode.
Another more specific object of the invention consists in creating an improved device for conducting the current from a terminal of a secondary welding circuit to the rotating shaft of the continuous welding machine, this
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
device ensuring large contact surfaces between moving parts with respect to one another, so as to reduce the electrical resistance and to facilitate the transport of the current.
Another object is to create current conducting segments for conducting current to a rotating shaft, these segments being in sliding contact with the shaft and resiliently mounted so that the floating state of these contacts allows them to be connected. ci to follow any irregularity of the surface and also to compensate for the normal play which may exist in the roller or ball bearings.
For these and other purposes, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, which are described in detail and particularly specified in the following description as well as in the summary and shown in the drawings herein. - seals.

Figure 12 shows a sectional elevation of a sliding contact device used as a high current switch.
FIG. 13 shows, in cross-section, the segments of the switch of FIG. 12, taken along line XIII-XIII of this figure.
Reference will now be made to the drawings, in particular to FIGS. 1 and 2, which represent a preferred embodiment of the invention applied to a resistance welding machine of the usual type, This machine, which is generally designated by the reference number 10, consists of a frame 11, a base plate 12 serving as a support, a lower arm 13 suitably fixed to the frame 11, for example in 14, and an upper arm 15 also fixed to the frame, for example in 16.
Resistance welding machines receive electric current which is supplied by an alternating current source such as that indicated by wires L1 and L2 and to which the primary winding of the machine 18 is electrically attached by the conductors. 20 and 21.
In order for the operator to be able to interrupt the flow of current from the alternating current source to the primary winding, a mechanical switch such as 22 is mounted in one of the conductors, the conductor 21.
This switch can of course be replaced by electromagnetically actuated conductors and the opening as well as the closing of the primary circuit can also be effected in an equally efficient manner with the aid of electric discharge lamps in combination with ad hoc control devices. The primary winding 18 constitutes one of the elements of the welding transformer which comprises an iron core 23 of high permeability and a secondary winding 24 consisting of one or more turns of a copper bar of considerable thickness.
The fixed electrode 25 is suitably secured in its position by the lower arm 13, which is stationary, being fixed to the frame of the welding machine, and to which a terminal of the secondary winding is fixed, for example at 26. L The movable electrode 27 is arranged above the electrode 25 and it is arranged so as to hold between these two electrodes a workpiece such as 28.
The movable electrode 27 is movable within the housing 30, which is generally referred to as the machine head, and which is suitably mounted on and isolated from the arm 15. The insulating strip which is located between the frame 30 and the arm 15, is indicated by 31 and clearly shown in Figure 2.
A high current is brought to the head 30 by a conductor 32 firmly fixed to the head 30 at one end, for example by the fixing screw 33 and electrically connected at its other end at 34, to the other terminal. secondary circuit 24.
It would appear, from the above, that the secondary welding transformer load circuit is complete and operates in such a way as to supply current to the electrodes which are directly in contact with the workpiece, so as to weld the latter by the high intensity current which passes through them However, a sliding contact is necessary between the head 30 and the movable electrode 27 to conduct the high intensity currents and according to the invention, the assembly of this sliding contact comprises elements of special design, the construction and operation of which constitute the improvements which are the subject of the present invention.
As shown in the section of Figure 2, the metal head 30 is hollow over part of its length, thus forming a chamber 35. The movable plunger 27 passes through the chamber 35 at its center starting from the head 30. , both from the upper end and from the lower end thereof.
At its lower end., The chamber 35 is closed by the room
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
thread 36 of insulating material, which serves to insulate and guide the lower end of the electrode 27. The upper end of the electrode passes through the upper wall of the head 30, that it protrudes and engages in the pressure chamber ', which communicates with the flow pipes 38 and 39.
The pipe 38 is connected to the head 30 near the upper end of the pressure char- ber 37 and it therefore sits above the piston 40, while 39 is connected to the head near the bottom. of the pressure chamber and thus is located below the piston 40. When the pressurized fluid is admitted above the piston through the pipe 38 and escapes below this piston through the pipe 39, this has the effect of causing piston 40, which is suitably attached to movable electrode 27, to move up and down, thereby imparting a similar movement to this electrode. A reinforcement of the above operations causes an upward movement of the piston and, consequently, of the movable electrode 27.
The passage of strong currents through the movable electrode 27 generates considerable heat in this electrode, which can be satisfactorily cooled by a current of refrigerant passing through the central bore 41 which is disposed longitudinally over most of the length of the electrode.
A tube 42 is housed inside the bore 41 and passes through the partition 43 to engage with the exhaust chamber 44. The coolant arrives at the bore 42 through the intake pipe 43 and the coolant. exhaust pipe 46 leads this coolant out of the exhaust chamber 44.
The upper wall of the chamber 35 is stamped so as to present angular surfaces 47 inclined from bottom to top towards the central opening 48. According to the invention the members 50 are arranged near the upper wall of the chamber. 35 and in contact with the angular surfaces 47. The members 50 are supported by a washer 51 having a substantially flat base surface, while the upper surface is on the contrary concave so as to present surfaces inclined from top to bottom towards the bottom. central opening of the washer.
A coil spring 52 is disposed between the washer 51 and the insulating piece 36. The members 50 include arcuate segments, as best shown in Figure 5.
If two of these segments are employed, each of them will have a substantially semicircular shape. However, if more than two segments are used, each segment will have a shape smaller than that of a semicircle and simply arched. With segments 30 in operative relation to movable electrode 27, it will be seen that there is some space between the circumference of the segments and the interior wall of chamber 35. The segments are also spaced apart from one another. 'othero
These spaces are necessary to allow free movement of the segments when they stretch or contract along the undulations of the contours of the electrode.
Pressurized contact of the segments with the electrode is maintained at all times as a result of the trapezoidal shape of the cross section of the segments. Each segment 50 has an inclined top and inclined bottom walls which are complementary with respect to the walls in contact with them, that is to say the walls 47 inclined upwards and the walls inclined downwards and formed by them. washers 51. More particularly, the top and bottom walls of each segment can be described as being inclined walls so as to converge outwardly and because of the surfaces which cooperate with them. The pressure of the coil spring 52 is transformed into a thrust which maintains the segments in pressurized contact with the electrode 27.
It should also be noted that pressurized contact is maintained between the segments and the surfaces 47 of the head 30.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Current flow is therefore facilitated and strong currents can flow from the head 30 to the segments so as to avoid damage to the contact surfaces, since the resistance to the current flow is reduced to a minimum.
Similarly, strong currents can pass segments to the electrode and not only is all damage from arcing virtually impossible, but electrode 27 can move freely during the operation. welding.
In order to minimize the wear of the friction surfaces and to ensure a long urea life on these surfaces despite their hard service, it has been found to be practical and desirable to use a very good conductive metal for making the joints. segments. For example, preference will be given to a material of high conductivity such as electrolytic copper, but annealed silver can also be used.
The electrode should also be made of a metal of high conductivity, but it is particularly desirable that it be quite hard or at least have a hard surface. It has been found that copper and certain copper alloys are very satisfactory for the electrode.
The variant shown in Figures 3 and 4 is applied to a resistance welding machine of the type using two movable electrodes.
These electrodes are of the type generally referred to as the spring pressure type.
The machine, which is generally designated by 110, consists of a frame 11, a base plate 112 serving as a support, a lower arm 113 fixed to the frame 11 at 114 and an upper arm 115 also fixed to the frame in 116.
The alternating current source, the source which is indicated by the wires L1 and L2, is connected to the primary winding 118 by conductors 120 and 121, the conductor 121 passing through its switch 122 or an equivalent electromagnetic or electronic device, for the opening and closing of the primary circuit. The iron core 123 and the secondary winding 124 complete the welding transformer of the resistance welding machine.
One of the terminals of the secondary winding is electrically connected to the lower arm 113, which carries the fixed lower electrodes 125.
The movable electrodes 127 and 129 are disposed above the fixed electrodes and a workpiece such as 128 is held between the electrodes. The head 130 is suitably fixed to the arm 115 and isolated from this arm and it is provided with the usual hydraulic device such as 137, which includes the flow pipes 138 and 139 for actuating a piston (not shown) mounted on the head. again to reciprocating in 137.
In this type of resistance welding machine, a plunger 140 is attached to the piston so as to move with it and this plunger 140 is suspended from the head 130 and the conductor 132 is attached to it. The conductor 132 is electrically connected to the secondary winding 124 so as to complete the secondary circuit of the welding transformer by the electrodes 127 and 129. These electrodes are suitably supported by the conductor 132 and these movable electrodes are thus placed. in motion with the conductor by the plunger 140 during the operation of the machine for the welding of the part.
The sliding contact system which is the subject of the invention is applied to each of the electrodes in the manner shown in more detail in FIG. 4 and this assembly will now be described.
In this variant, the mobile electrodes are mounted so as to be able to move respectively inside the metal boxes 133 and 134, each box having a part 135 intended to be fixed to the conductor 132 by means of screws or bolts housed. in the openings 136.
As best shown in Figure 4, the movable electrode 127 extends longitudinally through the housing 133 and descends from the end.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
lower end of this housing, this falling end of the electrode being threaded to receive the sleeve 137 which is locked when it is screwed onto the electrode by means of the lock nut 138.
The sleeve retains the tip 140 of the electrode, which is in direct contact with the workpiece. The movable electrode has, at its upper end, an annular shoulder 141 which is intended to come into contact with the housing 133 so as to limit the movement of the electrode downwards. An insulating washer 142 can be positioned by the housing to come into contact with the annular shoulder 141.
The electrode is guided in its movement inside the housing 133 by means of the sleeve 143 of insulating material, which is located at the upper end of the electrode, and by the part 144 carried by the electrode near the electrode. lower end of the housing. The part 144 is suitably secured in its position by means of the lock nut 145 and a washer can be inserted between this lock nut 145 and the insulating part.
The top wall of the chamber 146 is concave so as to form angular surfaces 147 inclined from bottom to top towards the central opening 148. As explained in connection with FIG. 2, arcuate segments 150 are provided. near the top wall of chamber 146 and these segments contact the smooth periphery of movable electrode 127, so that they conduct high current from fixed frame 133 to movable electrode 127.
The segments 150 have a trapezoidal shaped cross section and have top and bottom walls which are inclined so as to converge outwardly. The washer 151 is concave to come into contact with the underside of the segments and a helical spring 152 exerts a pressure on the washer which forces the latter to come into contact with the segments.
The coil spring rests on the insulator 144, and as a result of the inclination of the surfaces of the segments a thrust is exerted on them, which forces them to move inward to come into contact with them. the movable electrode.
The movable electrodes 127 and 129 are of the spring pressure type and this arrangement has the result that a number of electrodes can be mounted on a common plate and actuated by a common cylinder, identical pressures being obtained. at all places that need to be spot welded at the same time.
It is seen that the pressure exerted on the electrode tip 140 forces the movable electrode 127 to move upwardly relative to the housing 133.
Spring 152 is compressed accordingly, increasing the pressure exerted by the segments on the surfaces which cooperate with them. By using similar helical springs, it is therefore possible to make the pressures exerted by the electrodes substantially identical. It is of course necessary that the helical springs of the two electrodes be previously tensioned to approximately the same degree and for this purpose, the position of the lock nut 145 on its respective electrode can be adjusted. It is also possible to vary the length of each electrode by the movement of its sleeve 137.
In order to be able to cool each electrode, it is provided with a central bore extending to the interior of the tip of the electrode over part of its length. At its upper end the bore is closed by the button 153 and a tube 154 is housed inside this bore, a separating washer being attached to this tube and mounted between the inlet nozzle 155 and the outlet nozzle 156. These nozzles are individually screwed into openings in the electrode, with a slot in the housing 133 to allow this movement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The cooling fluid arriving through the inlet port 155 descends into the bore of the electrode and cools the latter by removing the heat generated by the passage of high current currents through this electrode. The liquid then rises through the tube 154, which leads to the outlet nozzle 156.
The intense currents are conducted by the segments 50 and 150 mounted between the current conducting members, that is to say a frame and an electrode which can move with respect to one another. The segments must of course be made of metal of high conductivity, but the good results given by the device are largely due to the pressurized contact constantly maintained between the parts and not in any way hampering the movement of the electrode.
In the variant shown in Figures 6 and 7, the movable electrode 27 is integral with the plunger 30 or is suitably attached to this plunger, which is mounted to slide vertically in the head 31 of the resistance welding machine 10.
The head is suitably mounted on and isolated from the arm 15, the insulating strip mounted between the head and the arm being indicated by the reference numeral 32. The upper end of the plunger 30 engages the pressure chamber 33. and this end is attached to the piston 34 reciprocally mounted in this chamber. The flow pipe 35 communicates with the chamber 33 near the upper end of this chamber and therefore sits above the piston 34.
The flow pipe 36 is connected to the head near the bottom of the pressure chamber and is thus located below the piston 34,
When the pressurized fluid is admitted above the piston through the pipe 35, escaping from under the pipe 36, this has the effect of lowering the piston 34 and of imparting a similar movement to the plunger 30 and the piston. 'electrode 27. Reversing these operations causes the piston and therefore also the movable electrode 27 to rise.
A high intensity current coming from the secondary circuit 24 is led to the movable electrode 27 by the sliding contact device of the invention, which device is shown in detail in FIG. 7.
A part 38 of good conductive material similar to that of electrode 27 is suitably attached to the electrode to form a single unit with it.
As a result, part 38 moves vertically with the electrode and forms the conductor through which the high currents are conducted to the electrode. A fixed part 40 also of high conductivity material is suitably fixed to the arm 13, an insulator 41 being mounted between the parts so that the conductor 40 is insulated from this arm in the same way as the head 31 in. is isolated. The part 40 is suitably connected to the other end of the secondary circuit 24, for example at 42.
The articulated conductors 44 and 45 connect the fixed part 40 electrically to the movable electrode 27. These conductors are formed by bars of copper or other metal of high conductivity articulated at their ends on the respective parts, each mounting d 'articulation comprising a pin 46 for the fixed part 40 and 47 for the moving part 38. This pin 47 is insulated by the tube 48 of insulating material which passes through the part 38 and engages in the bars 44 and 45 so that the articulation pin is isolated from the part, as well as from the bars. Washers 49 are mounted at each end of the hinge pin 47 and coil springs 50 are mounted on this pin between the washers and their respective retaining nut 51.
The bars are in surface contact with the part 38 and, as a result of their articulations, they move relative to the part so that a sliding contact results. The contact surface, which is of considerable size, reduces the resistance to the passage of electric current from the bars to the part and the passage of current is further enhanced by the pressure contact existing between the moving parts. 'a

compared to each other.
The articulation pin 46 is also isolated by a tube 52 which engages in the bore 53 of the fixed part 40 and in openings made in each bar. It will be noted that the bore 53 is extended horizontally.
This is necessary so that the electrode 27 can move vertically, the horizontal component of the movement causing the articulation pin 46 to move in the extended bore. Washers 54 are fitted at each end of the articulation pin and helical springs 55 are mounted on this pin between the washers and their respective retaining nut 56. At this end the bars 44 and 45 are in surface contact with the fixed part 40 and the surfaces cooperating with each other are maintained in contact under pressure by coil springs 55.
Cooling water is passed through the conductive bars 44 and 45 by means of tubes 57, this cooling water entraining the heat developed by the high intensity currents which circulate in the bars and thus maintaining them. contact faces between bars and parts at a relatively low temperature.
The variant shown in Figure 8 is applied to a resistance welding machine of the type using two movable electrodes.
These electrodes are of the type generally referred to as the "spring pressure" type.
The machine, which is generally designated by 110, consists of a frame 111, a base plate 112, the lower arm 113, fixed to the frame 114 and an upper arm 115 also fixed to the frame, at 116. The machine alternating current source, which is designated by the wires L1 and L2, is connected to the primary winding 118 by the conductors 120 and 121, the conductor 121 being provided with a switch 122 or an equivalent device, electromagnetic or electro - nick for opening and closing the primary circuit. The welding transformer is completed by the iron core 120 and the secondary winding 124.
One of the terminals of the secondary winding is electrically connected to the lower arm 113 which carries the lower fixed electrode 125. The movable electrodes 127 and 129 are arranged above the fixed electrodes and a workpiece such as this. that 128 is disposed between these electrodes. The head 130 is suitably fixed to the arm 115 and isolated from this arm, and it is fitted with the usual hydraulic device which comprises the pressure chamber 133 in which a piston (not shown) can move in an alternating movement. native.
The flow pipes 135 and 136 conduct a fluid in the pressure chamber to effect the reciprocating movement of the piston. The plunger 131 is suspended from the lower end of the head 130 and it will be understood that this plunger is fixed to the piston in the chamber 133 so as to move in the vertical direction and to impart a movement similar to the part. conductor 138 which is properly attached to it. Shoemakers 139 are fixed on their side to the conductive part 138 and they carry the electrodes 127 and 129.
As described in connection with FIG. 6, the conductor bars according to the invention serve to conduct the fixed current 140 to the moving part 138. The bars are hinged to the part 140 by means of the articulation pin 146 which acts in an elongated horizontal opening made in the part 140 in order to be able to move as a block to allow the vertical movement of the part 1380 The articulation pin 147 connects the conductive bars to this movable part and relative to at this joint the bars can only perform a pivoting movement, while with respect to the articulation pin 146 the bars can perform a pivoting movement as well as a sliding movement on this pin.
This construction ensures large contact surfaces which are pressed against each other under the pressure produced by the coil springs, so that the welding current is supplied to the electrodes in an efficient manner and such that any loss of harmful current is made impossible and that this device has a long life despite the hard service that it is

imposed.
In the variant shown in Figures 9 and 10, the lower arm 13 serves as a journal for the shaft 25, to which the electrode wheel 26 is suitably connected, the journal device for this shaft and the way in which the current is conducted. from shaft 13 to shaft being clearly shown in Figure 10 and described below. The upper electrode wheel 27 may come into contact with a part such as 28 inserted between the wheels as shown in FIG. 1, this upper electrode being suitably journaled by the element 30, which is fixed to the upper electrode. plunger 31 and mounted vertically with this plunger by means of the head 32.
The head 32 forms part of the fixed upper arm 15 and comprises the pressure chamber 33 which contains a piston, not shown, capable of reciprocating to provide the upward and downward movement of the plunger 31, of the element. 30 and also of the upper electrode wheel 27. The upper electrode wheel 27 may be suitably driven, for example by the knurled wheel 34 attached to the shaft 35 and journaled by the arm 36 which is integral with it. the element 30. The assembly allows the element 30 to move in the vertical direction, this movement being necessarily limited, since it suffices for the electrode wheels to be slightly apart from each other to allow the introduction of the electrode. room between them.
A current of great intensity is conducted to the element 30 by the conductor 45 which is suitably fixed to this element 30 and which extends behind the latter so as to be electrically connected to a terminal of the secondary circuit 24. The another terminal of the secondary circuit is connected to the fixed lower arm 13 and from this arm the circuit is completed by the two electrode knobs. The head 32 is suitably isolated from the arm 15 by the insulating strip 46.
It would appear from the above that the secondary load circuit of the welding transformer is completed and operates to supply current to the electrode knobs which are directly in contact with the parts so as to weld the same. -Here under the action of the high intensity current passing through them.
However, a sliding contact device is required to conduct current from the fixed arm 13 to the rotating electrode knob of that arm and likewise from member 30 to the rotating electrode knob of that element. The sliding contact device of the invention functions to suppress any harmful loss of current and, further, the device of the present invention provides large contact surfaces between the movable parts with respect to each other. the other, thereby reducing electrical resistance and making it easier to pass current from one room to another.
Reference will now be made in particular to FIG. 7. The lower electrode arm 13 constitutes an assembly formed of annular support parts 48 and 50, these parts being fixed to one another and to the arm 13 by the bolts 51. Each annular support piece contains a roller bearing assembly. The assembly 52 is mounted in the part 48 and the assembly 53 is mounted in the part 50.
It is necessary to insulate the bearing assemblies from both the shaft and the bearing elements so that they do not conduct current. Accordingly, it can be seen that the assembly 52 is isolated from the part 48 by means of the insulator 54. In a somewhat analogous manner, the bearing assembly 53 is isolated from the shaft 25, the bearing assembly being in contact with the metal ring 55 which, however, is isolated from the shaft by the insulator 56.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
At the anterior end of shaft 25 are insulating rings 57 and 58, these insulating rings serving to insulate the flanged front end of shaft 25 from bearing member 48. The thumbwheel electrode 26 is fitted to the anterior flanged end of the shaft and is suitably secured thereto by screws 60. The posterior end of shaft 25 is threaded to receive nut 61 which is suitably threaded onto it. this end. This nut holds the metal washer 62 and the insulating washer 63 on this end of the shaft, these washers being retained between the bearing assembly 53 and the nut 61. The posterior end of the shaft is also suitably isolated from the arm 13 by means of the ring 64 and the washer 65.
The intermediate part of the shaft 25 carries a metal sleeve 66, which is preferably hard and very conductive. The material of the bearing element 50 is also a very good conductive metal, but this element is spaced from the shaft 25 and is thus spaced from the sleeve 66, so that the passage of an electric current between the two parts can only take place through the segments 67, which are preferably made of metal which is a very good conductor of hardness and which are in sliding contact under pressure with the rotary sleeve 66 carried by the shaft 25.
The segments 67 encircle the shaft 25 and helical springs urge them elastically in two directions forming a right angle between them, one of these directions being axial, that is to say along the axis 25 and acting so as to keep the segments in contact under pressure with the face of the element 50, and the other direction being radial, that is to say so as to keep the segments in contact with the periphery of the shaft 25.
Each segment carries several pegs designated by 68: these pegs pass through the segments and engage in housings 70 formed in the contact face of the element 50. For their part, these pegs are supported and held in their position by the ring 71 of insulating material and coil springs 72 urge the segments resiliently to the right to keep them in pressurized contact with the face of the element 50. The coil springs 73 are held in position by means of supports 74 and there is one or more of these coil springs for each segment 67, so as to maintain the pressurized contact of the segments with the sleeve 66.
It can be seen from the above that the axial pressure and the radial pressure exerted on the lower electrode wheel 26 will be supported by the shaft 25 which is suitably guided and journalled by the sets of ball bearings 52 and 53. The segments 67 do not undergo any reaction due to these pressures exerted on the dial. The segments are constantly kept in contact under pressure with the arm 13 which constitutes one of the current conducting elements, and with the shaft 25, which constitutes the other current conducting element and rotates with respect to 13.
The segments are resiliently biased so as to come into contact with both the arm and the shaft and it follows from the floating mounting of these segments that they can follow any roughness of the surface or eccentricity of the shaft and also compensate for the normal play that may exist in the ball bearing assemblies. It is believed that the wear will take place between the contact surfaces of the segments and the rotating shaft 25, but the wear of these sliding surfaces does not affect the efficiency of the assembly because the other face of contact of the segments is normal to the wear surfaces or, in other words, parallel to the radial movement which takes place with respect to the segments when the wear of the surfaces brings these segments closer to the axis under the action radial compression springs 73.
It has been found that up to ten thousand amps per square inch of contact can be passed while the wheel and shaft are rotating, and that currents of this magnitude can be conducted without appreciable deleterious effect. on the condition of the surfaces, even after several thousand revolutions of the shaft. It will be seen that the segments do not rotate, as they are prevented from doing so by the pegs 68 which, however, help
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
the segments to behave in a floating fashion. It has been found useful to cool the element 50 by means of the tube 75 which can be cast in this element, 50 and in which circulates cooling water which enters it through the opening 76 and which leaves it. through a similar orifice.
The arm 13 is cooled in a similar manner by means of a tube 77 which passes through the axial bore 78 of the arm 13 and into the central bore 80 of the shaft 25.
The bore going from the arm 13 to the shaft is covered by a sort of bridge formed by the insulating sleeve 81, which thus serves as a conductive liquid channel for the arm and the shaft at the same time.
Cooling water is admitted into tube 77 through intake channel 82 and this liquid flows through the tube to the left end thereof, after which coolant is discharged into bore 80 The liquid then returns back and is discharged if necessary from the bore 78 through the outlet opening 83. These arrangements for cooling the parts ensure a temperature in the conductors which conduct the current and on the contact surfaces formed between the moving parts with respect to one another.
The segments 67 are disposed around the shaft 25 with sufficient space between them to allow them to move freely and to maintain pressure in contact with the segments and the shaft. This is clearly shown in Fig. 11. It is understood that the upper electrode wheel 27 is attached to a shaft having a journal device and a sliding contact system like that described.
To maintain favorable sliding conditions between segments 67 and sleeve 66, a suitable lubricant can be introduced through opening 84.
The switch shown in Figure 12 can transmit intense currents up to 50,000 amps. It comprises a movable part 31 comprising the electrical contacts 32 which moves transversely opposite a fixed part 33 comprising the electrical contact 34.
The movable part 31 comprises a number of contact supports 3 each connected to one of the use circuits. These supports 3 are placed next to each other and in the same plane perpendicular to that of the figure. By a translational movement perpendicular to the figure, each of the contacts 32 can be placed successively in front of the contact 34. When this is the case, the movement is stopped and the electrical connection between the two poles is made by the compressed air supply to the pressure cylinder, as shown below:
Contact 34 is mounted at the end of a slide 7 integral with a piston 30 sliding in a cylinder 35.
The electrical contact between the mass, the fixed part 33 and the slide 7 is ensured by conical segments 17 (figure 13) formed for example of three parts in an arc of a circle 171, 172 and 173, on which the spring bears. pressure 36.
The axial movement of the slide to close the contact (arrow fl) or to open it (arrow f2) is provided by compressed air acting on the piston 30.
In order to close the contact 32-34 the compressed air enters the cylinder 35, to the right of the piston 30, through the pipe 37 and pushes the said piston 30 along the arrow fl.
To open the contact 32-34, the compressed air arrives in the cylinder 35 to the left of the piston 30, through the pipe 38 and pushes the said piston along the arrow f2, in the opposite direction to the arrow Fl. The slide 7, the mass of the fixed part 33 and the moving part 31 are cooled by cooling water circulations 39,40, ± the
