Four l'exécution de la premiâm partie du procédé, il est avantageux, quoique non essen- blel, d'employer un solvant inerte tel que l'eau, un alcool aliphatique inférieur ou un mélange de tels alcools, l'éther, le benzène, le toluène ou semblables, pour faciliter la réaction de l'acide ou de l'anhydride succiniques avec l'ammoniac ou la méthylamine. Il n'est pas né cessaire d'employer les réactifs en proportions particulières exactes ;
Lorsqu'on emploie l'anhy dride a, a - diéthyl - fi - méthylsuccinique avec un équivalent d'ammoniac ou de méthyl- amine, le produit intermédiaire est la semi- amide ;
Rendement : 58 0/0.
Process for the preparation of succinimides The invention relates to a process for the preparation of succinimides having chemotherapeutic activity, namely α, α-diethyl-, 8-methylsuccinimides of general formula

in which R is hydrogen or a methyl radical.
According to the invention, the above products are prepared by reacting a, a-diethyl -, B - methylsuccinic acid or a, a-diethyl-, B-methylsuccinic anhydride with at least one chemical equivalent ammonia, usually in the form of ammonium hydroxide, or methylamine, and heating the intermediate product thus formed to a temperature between 100, and 350,) C.
For carrying out the first part of the process, it is advantageous, although not essential, to employ an inert solvent such as water, a lower aliphatic alcohol or a mixture of such alcohols. , ether, benzene, toluene or the like, to facilitate the reaction of succinic acid or anhydride with ammonia or methylamine. It is not necessary to use the reagents in exact particular proportions;
however, from the point of view of economy, it is advisable to use several equivalents of ammonia or methylamine per equivalent of a, a-diethyl-p-methylsuccinic acid or a, a-diethyl-p- anhydride. methyl succinic. The intermediate products are different depending on which of the two above-mentioned raw materials is used, and also on the amount of ammonia or methylamine used.
When the α, α - diethyl - fi - methylsuccinic anhydride is employed with an equivalent of ammonia or methylamine, the intermediate is the semi-amide;
while if two or more equivalents are employed, the intermediate is the ammonium or methylamine salt of α, α-diethyl-f-methylsuccinic acid half-amide. In the case where α, α-diethyl-fl-methylsuccinic acid is employed as the starting material, the intermediate product is the mono- or di-ammonium or methylamine salt of α, α-diethyl- acid. ,
8-methylsuccinic. These intermediates can be converted to the desired succinimides by heating them to a temperature between 100 and 3501 ° C. The preferred temperature for this conversion is between 190.1 and 2100 ° C., at which temperature the reaction is complete in Approximatly one hour.
The products obtained by the process according to the invention have valuable therapeutic properties and are particularly useful for the treatment of the petit mal type of epi lepsy.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples Example 1 10 g of a, a-diethyl-, B-methylsuccinic acid are gradually added to 10 cc of concentrated ammonium hydroxide and removed in following distillation of water and excess ammonia. The temperature of the residue is raised and maintained at 2000 ° C. until there is no more evolution of ammonia. The residue is then dissolved in dry ether, the solution is dyed with animal charcoal and the ether removed by distillation.
The solid product is recrystallized from ether-petroleum ether and the desired α, α-diethyl-p-methylsuccinimide is obtained; P. F. 73-74 C. Yield:
37%. Example 2 9 g of α, α-diethyl-fl-methylsuccinic anhydride are dissolved in 8 cc of concentrated ammonium hydroxide and 10 cc of ethanol and the alcohol is distilled off and ammonia in excess. The temperature of the residue is raised and maintained at 210 ° C. until no more evolution of ammonia, then it is cooled and dissolved in dry ether. The ether solution is then decolorized with animal charcoal, and the ether removed by distillation.
The solid product is recrystallized from petroleum ether-ether to give the desired α, α-diethyl-1-methylsuccinimide; M.p. 73-74 C. Yield: 42%.
Example 3 10 g of α, α-diethyl-f-methylsuccinic acid are gradually added to 20 g of aqueous methylamine and then the water and excess methylamine are distilled off. The temperature of the residue is raised and maintained at 200 ° C. until no more evolution of methylamine. The residue is then dissolved in dry ether, the solution is decolorized with animal charcoal and the ether removed by distillation.
The residue is distilled off in vacuo and the desired N-methyl-α, α-diethyl-fl-methylsuccinimide is obtained; P.E. 134-135 C / 22.5 mm. Yield: 58%.
