Table for bedridden persons The present invention relates to a table for bedridden persons; this table, to be placed on the bed over the user's legs, should enable the latter to take his meals, read, write, etc., while leaving him the freedom to move his legs. The table is therefore arranged so that it can be set up by giving different inclinations to its top.
The table according to the invention is characterized by a top and by two symmetrical articulated lever devices arranged near two opposite edges of the top, these two positive devices being able to be deployed to serve as a support for the top or fully folded against the top, each of these devices comprising two elements articulated at one end on a bar integral with the plate, a base lever articulated on the one hand at the other end of one of said elements and, on the other hand, at one of the ends a lever, an intermediate point of which is articulated at the other end of the other element articulated on the bar, which has two notches capable of cooperating with the free end of the last mentioned lever,
one of the articulations of the device being arranged in such a way that it can be blocked at will, the two devices being rigidly connected to each other by two cross members bringing together two pairs of homologous elements, the arrangement being such that one can erect the table with four different inclinations of the top by modifying the shape of the deformable polygon constituted by said elements and levers and by the aforementioned bar.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the closed table; and fig. 2 a corresponding view of the sub.
Figs. 3 to 6 each show one of the positions of use of the table.
Fig. 7 shows a member used to hold in place a sheet or the pages of a book placed on the tray.
The table for bedridden persons shown in the drawing comprises on the one hand a tangular plate 10 with variable inclination and, on the other hand, two lever devices articulated to each other and to the plate; these lever arrangements, arranged near two opposite edges of the plate 10, are symmetrical with respect to the median plane of this plate and are joined to each other by two crossbars 3 and 9 extending parallel to the other edges of the plate 10. We will therefore describe only a single lever device with particular reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.
Regarding fig. 2, which shows half of the table seen from below, it is pointed out that the levers have been hatched only in order to facilitate understanding of the drawing: these levers are therefore not sines in section. The plate 10 has, near one of its shorter edges, a bar 14 which serves both as a stiffening element for the plate and as a fixing member for the lever device. At one end of this bar 14 is articulated by means of a rivet 21 a connecting rod 2, the other end of which is connected by an articulation 22 to one of the ends of a base lever 8 serving as a element supporting the table in all positions of use thereof.
Near the other end of this lever 8 is hinged another lever 4, the other end of which is angled cut to cooperate with notches 5 and 6 cut in the bar 14. At an intermediate point 24 of the lever 4 is hinged a connecting rod 7 articulated on the other hand to a stud 11 fixed to the bar 14 by screws, the elements 2, 8, 4, 7 and 14 constituting a deformable five-sided polygon to which several shapes can be given each corresponding to at a determined inclination of the plate 10.
The sides of this polygon are moreover established in such a way that this polygon can be completely flattened, as can be seen in figs. 1 and 2, the side 8 being applied against the bar 14, the connecting rod 2 partially housed in a notch 25 of the bar 14 while the lever 4 is applied against this same bar and the connecting rod 7 is disposed laterally to this lever 4. The end of the crossmember 3 finds its place in the notch 6 'cut in the bar 14. The table thus occupies a minimum volume in the non-use position, which allows it to be parked easily. 12 is a guide cleat.
Fig. 4 shows one of the positions of use of the table, in which the plate 10 and the two base levers 8 are mutually parallel. If the table thus unfolded is placed on the bed, straddling the legs of the bedridden person, the plate 10 assumes a substantially horizontal position without resting on the legs of the said person who can thus be in any way. move without risking rocking the table.
To set the table in this position from the state shown in fig. 1, we proceed as follows. The table is overturned and the wing nuts 16 which block the joints of the connecting rods 7 are loosened; we grab the cleats 1 fixed on the base levers 8 to lift the latter and, in doing so, we raise the connecting rods 2 and angularly move the elements 4 and 7. We then engage the beveled tip of the lever 4 in the notch 5 and the nuts 16 are tightened. The two lever devices then form two indefinable polygons. We overturn the table and put it on the bed. The top will be horizontal, if the bed itself is horizontal.
To change to the position shown in fig. 3, the nuts 16 are loosened and the bevelled end of the lever 4 is passed through the notch 6. The nuts are tightened. In this position, the top and the base levers 8 form a small angle between them which corresponds to the sag that most of the beds have towards the middle: thus the top 10 can be placed horizontally even if the mattress is s' sags towards the middle. Fig. 5 shows another position of use of the table which is then placed next to the patient lying on his side, to give him the possibility of reading, writing, etc. In this position, the cross member 3 would prevent the table from being placed over the person.
In this use of the table, the elements 2 and 14 are in alignment, the crossbar 9 bu both against the underside of the plate 10, the elements 8 and 4 are also in alignment, the cleats 13 serving as a stop for the levers 4. Fig. 6 shows the position of the table allowing the patient seated in bed to read, write, paint, etc. In this case, the elements 2 and 14 are in alignment as before, and the elements 4 and 7 are also aligned, the cross member 3 serving as a stop for the connecting rods 7. The tightening of the nuts 16 ensures the rigidity of the 'together.
The bar 14 also has a notch 19 in which an elastic blade 19 'is placed. This notch is used to receive the plate 32 which the blade 19 'retains, provided with a slightly conical rod 31 and forming with the plate an angle of less than 900. This plate is generally triangular in shape and the rod 31 is fixed near one of its peaks. It is used to hold a sheet in place or to keep open a book placed on the tray which has for this purpose a series of holes (not shown in the drawing) intended to receive the rod 31.
