EMI0001.0060
worin n eine ganze Zahl im Wert von 2 bis 4 bedeutet. Beim vorliegenden Verfahren kön nen aber auch nichtlineare Polyanthrimide, wie zum Beispiel 1,4;
In man chen Fällen,

Process for the production of anthraquinone vat dyes It has been found that anthraquinone vat dyes can be produced in a particularly valuable manner by carbazolation of anthrimides if such anthrimides, which are built up exclusively from anthraquinone nuclei, are preceded by carbazolation with halogenating ones. Means treated.
Among anthrimides; which are built up exclusively from anthraquinone nuclei are to be understood here as those anthrimides which have no other ring systems, for example no benzene, naphthalene or hetero rings, namely neither connected by a single bond with an anthraquinone radical,
still with such condensed rings. Linear polyanthrimides are preferred, and among these, the anthrimides which contain 4 to 6 anthraquinone nuclei are of particular interest. Linear polyanthrimides are those anthrimides composed of at least three anthroquinone nuclei in which all anthrimide bonds are normal:
written formula lie in a straight line. This is the case when the anthrimide bonds are each: in the 1,4-, position to one another, so that each of the one arithraquinone nucleus is connected to the 1-, position of the next through an --NN group.
It is particularly advantageous to use polyanthrimides which are free from acylamino groups and expediently free from further substituents at all, for example those of the formula
EMI0001.0060
wherein n is an integer from 2 to 4. In the present process, however, non-linear polyanthrimides such as 1,4;
5 = tri- (a-anthraquinonylamino) anthraquinone or 1,4,5 @; 8-T'etra- (a-anthraquinonylamino) anthraquinone can be used as starting materials.
The polyanthrimides can be prepared by methods known per se. As is well known, the linear t'etranthrimide, that is to say 1,1'-4 ', 1 "-4", 1 "' - 't'etranthrimide, can be obtained by condensation of 1,112o1 4,4' = Prepare di-amino-1,1'-dianthrimide with 2 moles of 1-chloro-anthraquinone.
The linear pentanthrimide can be obtained by condensation of 2 hol 4-amino-1,1'-dianthrimide with 1 mol of 1,4-dichloroanthraquinone and the linear hexanthrimide by condensation of 1 mol of 4-amino-1,1'-4 ', 1 "-trianthrimide with 1 mol of 4-chloro-1,1'4 ', 1" -triantlirimide can be obtained.
The condensation reactions leading to the polyanthrimides can be carried out by customary methods. : They are carried out, for example, in a high-boiling solvent or partitioning agent such as nitrobenzene, 1-dichlorobenzene or naphthalene with the addition of acid-binding agents such as sodium carbonate or sodium acetate and catalytic quantities of copper salts. In some cases,
For example, in the condensation of 4,4'-diamino-1,1'-dianthrimide with 1-, chloranthraquinone, you can also work with a greatly reduced amount of a suitable distribution agent, such as naphthalene, for example an amount that is only a fraction of the substances to be reacted with each other, if a heatable device is used as the reaction vessel that points to the
for example in form. a more or less thick paste has a grinding and mixing effect.
The paddle dryer should be mentioned as a particularly useful device of this type (see, for example, Badger and Me. Cabe, Elements der Chemie-Ingenieur-Technik, Verlag Springer, Berlin, 1932, (pages 224 to 225, Fig .1N).
As halogenating agents in the present process, for example, brominating agents such as bromine or preferably chlorinating agents come into consideration. Among the latter, sulphuryl chloride has proven to be particularly useful.
The treatment with the halogenating agent can either take place without intermediate separation, that is to say directly following the condensation to give the polyanthrimide, or as a special process step with prior separation of the polyanthrimide.
Which individual method is to be preferred depends, in addition to the constitution of the polyanthrimide, also on the type of solvent or distribution agent used in the condensation, with particular consideration being given to whether this, such as nitrobenzene, for example , Chlorobenzene or o-dichlorobenzene, is relatively resistant to halogenating agents, or, like naphthalene,
easily responded by such means. Recommended when using sulfuryl chloride. It is generally considered to undertake the treatment in an organic, inert solvent, expediently at an elevated temperature, for example at a temperature between 50 and 100, to add a halogenating agent, for example a small amount of iodine, and to add the halogenating agent during Let it take effect for a longer period of time, advantageously for a few hours.
Depending on the choice of these reaction conditions and the amount of halogenating agent, a weaker or stronger effect of this water reaction can occur, which is mainly recognizable in a lower or higher halogen content of the polyanthrimide, but also on the properties of the garbazole obtainable from this essential union Exercising influence.
When treating polyanthrimides, in particular the linear tetranthrimides, with Si-dfiryl chloride, about 2 to 3 moles of the halogenating agent are advantageously used per mole of anthrimide.
This generally results in a halogen content which corresponds approximately to a monohalogenated tetranthrimide, but can also be visibly lower or higher (for example 0.7 to 1.2 atoms of chlorine per molecule of tetranthrimide).
The various combinations of aluminum chloride with fluxes known per se can be used for carbazolation, although it can be left open in individual cases to what extent these fluxes form molecular compounds with aluminum chloride.
Aromatic compounds such as nitrobenzene and inorganic compounds such as sulfur dioxide, optionally alone or in combination, may be mentioned as such flow agents.
In the case of the linear polyanthrimides, advantageous results are generally obtained when aluminum chloride is used with the addition of a tertiary base, for example a tertiary base free of hydroxyl groups, such as, for example, triethylamine. Particularly suitable, however, are cyclic bases, such as, for example, quinoline or acridine, and above all pyridine bases themselves and their closest homologues, for example methylpyridine,
like a-Pieolin or mixtures of. Pyridine bases, such as the technical ss, y- # picolin mixture.
The carbazolation of the polyanthrimides can advantageously take place at temperatures between approximately 120 and 1800.degree. When using pyridine-aluminum chloride, temperatures of about 140 ° C are particularly advantageous, while the picolines, for example, also allow the reaction to be carried out at higher temperatures (up to about 1800 Ci.
Depending on the choice of condensation agent and the reaction temperature, there may be further differences in the properties of the product obtained that do not result from various treatment with the halogenating agent, for example with regard to the hue of the vat coloration produced with it.
The reaction mixture can be worked up in the usual way, for example by making the reaction mixture alkaline after dilution with water with alkali metal hydroxide and by adding a suitable reducing agent such as sodium hydrosulfite to vat the dye obtained and then by oxidation Example by means of air.
Instead of vatting the dye, it can be cleaned with oxidizing agents such as sodium hypochlorite after it has been poured into water.
The dyes obtainable in this way can be used in the same way as the corresponding dyes produced by the known methods, that is to say without treatment with halogenating agents, for example as .Pigments, for dyeing or printing cellulosic fibers, if necessary in the form of the known Processes obtainable therefrom leucose sulfuric acid ester salts. As already stated, the dyes obtainable by the present process differ from the known processes,
without treating the anthrimides with halogenating agents. produced dyes in certain properties. In some cases, especially in the case of the carbazole obtainable from the linear tetranthrimide, the products obtainable by the new process result in more valuable shades or better color match when dyeing different types of fibers,
for example made from native and regenerated cellulose. In addition, better fastness properties can be observed.
This is particularly surprising because the carbazoles obtainable by the present process, in contrast to the anthrimides (compare the information above), only have a very low halogen content, which, even if one assumes that it does not contain halogenated substances Impurities, but rather on halogen substitution in the end products, can in no way be used as an explanation for the difference in properties.
The halogenated polyanthrimides can probably be carbazolated more easily or more completely than the corresponding non-halogenated ones. However, this different course of the carbazolation, which here apparently takes place with elimination of halogen or hydrogen halide, could in no way be foreseen.
In the following examples, unless otherwise specified, the parts are parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius. Example 1 61 parts of 4,4'-diamino-1,1'-dianthrimide, 64.5 parts of 1-chlorantlirachinone, 40 parts of water-free sodium carbonate, 6 parts of copper chlorine and 1,600 </ B> parts of nitrobenzene are stirred at the boil for 8 to 10 hours. Allow to cool to .60, give 45.
Allocate sulphuryl chloride and stir at 70 to f0 5 hours. The filter is then filtered off with suction, washed with nitrobenzene and treated with steam until no more nitrobenzene distills. The residue is then filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried.
A dark purple colored powder is obtained which dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color. A product made in this way contained 2.54% chlorine.
This chlorine-containing 1,1'-4 ', 1 "-4", 1 "' - tetranthrimide is carbazolated as follows: 25 parts of aluminum chloride are introduced at 10 to 100 in @ 60, parts of anhydrous pyridine with stirring 5 parts of the product described in the first paragraph of this example are added and the temperature is increased to 140 to 142 within 45 minutes, some pyridine distilling off.
The mixture is left to stir for 1 hour at 140 to 142 and the reaction mixture is poured into cold water. To this suspension are added 120 parts of 30 percent sodium hydroxide solution and 50 parts of sodium hypochlorite solution. The mixture is warmed to 90, stirred for 1 hour at this temperature, peeled off,
