Process for the preparation of a dye of the dioxazine series. It has , been found that one reaches a valuable dioxazine dye if one uses the compound of the formula
EMI0001.0008
treated with ring-closing agents.
The new dye is a dark powder that dissolves in water with a violet color and colors cotton, rayon, regenerated cellulose and paper in pure, reddish blue tones with very good lightfastness.
The compound used here as starting material can. obtained by condensation of 1 mol of 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroquinone (chloranil) with 2 mol of 2-cyclohexylamino-3-chloro-5-aminobenzene-1-sulfonic acid.
The treatment of the compound thus obtainable with ring-closing agents can be carried out according to methods known per se, with ring-closing agents being used which, due to their oxidizing effect, are capable of

convict. Sulfuric acid with a content of free sulfur trioxide (oleum) proves to be particularly expedient, the sulfur trioxide content of the oil being within wide limits,
z. B. between 5 to 65%, can vary. The oleum containing about 5 to 240/0 free sulfur trioxide generally does a good job. The ring closure is preferably carried out at a temperature of 90 to 95.
All or some of the oleum can be replaced by chlorosulfonic acid. Example: 10 parts of the compound of the formula (1) are in 200 parts of 24% strength oleum. dissolved and the whole is heated to 90 to 95 for 1 hour while stirring. The deep blue solution is then poured onto 700 parts of ice and the dyestuff which has precipitated out is filtered off.
It is stirred in 300 parts of water, the solution is made neutral with sodium carbonate or one of the other alkali and the dye is deposited in full with 60 parts of sodium chloride. Then it is filtered off and dried.
The compound of the formula (1) given above is prepared by adding 147 parts of 5-nitro-2,3-dichlorobenzene-1-sulfonsaiiues sodium with 52 parts of cyclohexylamine and 11 parts of magnesium oxide in 600 parts of water to 160 in an autoclave for 5 hours heated up to 165 and the condensation product

Process according to the patent application, characterized in that the ring-closing process is carried out in the usual manner with iron to give 2-cyclohexylamino-3 - "chloro - 5 - aminobenzene-1-sulfonic acid.
60.9 parts of the above amine, 24.6 parts of chloranil and 9.3 parts of magnesium oxide who stirred the in 300 parts of water at 60 to 65 hours. The condensation product deposited is then filtered off, washed with water until the filtrate runs away colorless, and dried at 70 to 80 in vacuo.
