Furnace for smelting and refining copper and copper alloys. Currently, copper and cuprous alloys are used to melt copper, for the preparation of ingots or castings, vegetable crucible furnaces or fixed or tilting crucible furnaces or even fixed or rotary reverberation system furnaces. . All the furnaces used meet pure and simple melting purposes to the exclusion of any refining.
This obliges the founder, when he uses as a material. departure of old recovered metals, which is the case in the current fold, to carefully select the batches that he uses, failing which he carries out castings with what are called white fusions, totally unsuitable for casting. sound foundry parts. These mergers are to be rejected and lost.
However, to date, this selection, in order to rule out high-resistance bronzes or brass, generators of aluminum, manganese, silicon and all metals producing white castings, has proved to be very difficult, if not impossible when 'they are small parts or rounds and divided scrap of copper alloys.
The present invention relates to a furnace for melting and refining copper and copper alloys in which the metal is. heated by contact with combustion gases, characterized in that it comprises at its upper part a chimney made of refractory material for the evacuation of gases, chimney protruding into the interior part of the furnace and flush with the upper part , the outer part of the refractory wall, in that it also comprises, at a lower level and in opposite places, a duct for supplying refining gas and a pouring orifice, this furnace being, moreover , capable of tilting such that, by tilting in one direction,
the level of the metal rises above said gas duct to allow the introduction of compressed gas into the molten mass for its refinement, while, by tilting in the opposite direction, the metal level reaches the pouring hole,
to allow the casting of molten and refined metal. It has been shown somewhat schematically that one embodiment of the oven according to the invention FIG. 1 shows the oven as seen in longitudinal section.
Figs. 2 and 3 show this same oven in two positions of use.
The oven is constituted by an outer frame formed by the assembly of two vi roles 1 and 2. The upper part 3 is preferably of generally spherical shape and is provided with a central opening 4 into which penetrates a chimney constituted by a refractory material such as a carburondun crucible, used in foundry and from which the bottom has been cut.
This chimney protrudes internally from the coating, and has an opening 6 which puts both the interior of the oven in communication with the exterior.
The bottom 7 comprises a support 8 carrying a movable part 9 allowing the oven to oscillate.
The latter is maintained in a cradle 10 resting on feet 11 placed parallel to one another and comprising at their upper part a pivot pin 12. A set of levers, one of which is maintained in a fixed frame makes it possible to cause the oscillations of the oven by means of a control handle 13 acting on a rod 14. The wall of the oven includes. a distribution chamber or wind box 15 comprising nozzles 16. In the opposite wall is formed a chute 17.
A heater 18, comprising at least one oil burner, provides heating inside the furnace to the desired temperature, in order to obtain the melting. A door 18b is also made in the pa king of the oven.
The interior of the furnace is lined with a refractory lining 19 of suitable shape to constitute a floor 20 and an arch 21, in order to ensure efficient circulation of hot air and a rational evacuation of gases.
The operation of the furnace is as follows: The material to be treated is placed inside the furnace where it undergoes the effects of the heat produced by the burner 18. The excess gases and the products of combustion are discharged through the chimney 5 This chimney, because it protrudes into the oven, allows a high caloric yield to be obtained.
As soon as the metal is molten, the furnace is tilted (fig. 2), so as to bring the level of the liquid metal above the nozzles which are put into action so that the air or the air is oxygenated. contained in chamber 15 penetrates inside the melt and performs the desired refining treatment.
By this tilting in the direction of arrow A, this furnace can be used as it is for refining the treated metals. When the oven is returned to its normal position, the slag can be removed through the middle opening 18b.
Finally, the casting is carried out by tilting the furnace in the direction of the arrow B, and the molten metal escapes through the chute 17.
