Selection apparatus, in particular for organs. The subject of the invention is a selection apparatus, in particular for organs, making it possible to record several combinations of the position of several elements and to reproduce at will and in any order each of these combinations.
In organs, for example, we already know of installations allowing certain combinations of stops to be chosen in advance, each play being controlled by the position of an element. Organs are, in fact, generally provided with buttons. making it possible to select the different combinations of games which are most often used.
If we had buttons to select all the possible combinations of different games, we would be. Having to multiply the number of buttons in such large portions that the cost of the installation would be exorbitant, and the organist would have great difficulty in knowing all these buttons.
We have tried to overcome this difficulty by using perforated cardboards, in which each perforation enables a game to be engaged. These cards must, however. be drilled using a special machine, and this work is long and tedious. In addition, if a perforation error is made, the work must be restarted with a new cardboard, since it is hardly possible to seal the perforations.
In known installations of this kind, the cardboard must always advance in the same direction, so that if the organist wants to use the same combination several times, he is obliged to redo the perforations corresponding to this combination as many times.
We have also built organs in which we can make each of the control buttons of the games cooperate with one of several groups of two electromagnets, each by means of a switch, so as to place an armature common to these two electromagnets in a position corresponding to that of said button. With the aid of another switch, the game control buttons can then be automatically made to assume the position corresponding to that of the armature of their respective group of electromagnets.
In such an installation, the number of electromagnets is very large, since it is necessary, for each set of the organ, as many groups of two electromagnets as we want to be able to record die </ B> different combinations, so the installation price is very high.
The selection apparatus which is the subject of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises, for each of said elements, a feeling member capable of cooperating with as many mobile members as the apparatus must be able to record. of different combinations, each of these movable members being capable of being placed in two different positions to cause, during its.
cooperation with the feeler member, a different movement of the latter for each of these two positions, this movement controlling the positioning of said elements according to the position of said movable members.
The following description indicates, by way of example and with reference to the appended drawing, an embodiment of a selection apparatus which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section through part of the apparatus, showing in particular a feeling member and a movable element.
Fig. 2 is a view of a detail of the apparatus.
Fig. 3 is a section through III-III of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 shows the principle of the electrical diagram of this device.
The apparatus comprises a frame formed of uprights 1, connected by an upper cross member 2 and a lower cross member not shown in the drawing. These uprights 1 have tapped holes in which the threaded feet 3 are locked using locknuts 4. These pivots 3 support horizontal rods 5, carrying at each end a disc 6 having twelve radial notches 7.
Fig. 1 only shows two rods 5, but the apparatus comprises several of these rods placed one above the other. Threaded rods 8, only two of which are shown in the drawing, are fixed in these notches 7 and are parallel to the rod 5. Movable members are constituted by washers 9, having notches 10, 11 and 12 screwed onto each of these rods 8 at an equal distance from each other.
In fig. 3, a group of six washers has been shown, but in reality the rods carry washers along their entire length.
A second rod 13 -is mounted parallel to each rod 8 and can slide by its ends in the notches 7. These rods 13 are subjected to the action of springs 14, which press them against the notches 11 or 12 of the washers. 9, according to the position that they occupy, in order to block them in this position.
Each rod 5 carries at one of its ends a toothed wheel 15, which is engaged with a worm 16. All the worms 16 can be rotated by a single motor 75, shown schematically in FIG. 4, which makes it possible to simultaneously rotate all the rods 5 with the elements which they support.
At the same height as the rods 5 and in conjunction with them are arranged slides 17 having a section in the shape of a U. The two wings of the U have perforations in which slide needle the 18. Each of the latter constitutes a feeling member and is subjected to the action of a spring. 19, which tends to move it away from the washers 9. The needles 18 are six times less numerous than the washers 9 and the slide 17 can be moved horizontally so that each needle can be placed in front of any one of a group of six washers.
To simplify the drawing, only the needle 18 located opposite the group of six washers 9 shown has been indicated.
The slides 17 are guided at each end by screws 20. They are all traversed in their middle by a vertical rod 21, which can be moved laterally. by -a set of electromagnets placed at each end of this rod 21. This set of electromagnets is shown in FIG. 2 and comprises three windings 22, 23, 24, which are carried by two bars 25 and 26, of magnetic material, fixed to the uprights 1. Disks 27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 are provided at each end of these windings, which are still crossed by cores 32, 33 and 34.
The core 32 is fitted into the extremity of a tube 35 of non-magnetic material and made integral with the latter by means of a transverse pin 36. The core 34 is. em sleeved at the other end of this tube 35 and is fixed to it by means of a pin 37. The core 33 is housed in the tube 35, between the cores 32 and 34, and can slide there freely. The tube 35 has two elongated holes 38, indicated in broken lines in FIG. 2, through which passes the rod 21 which is integral with the core 33. A coil spring 39, working in the compression, bears, on the one hand, on the disc 29 and, on the other hand, on the rod 21.
The force of this spring is sufficient to move the slides 17. A second spring 40, also coil spring and working in compression, bears, on the one hand, against the end of the tube 35, which is flared at this. effect, and, on the other hand, against a washer 41, bearing either against the disc 28, or. against a shoulder of the core 32. The force of this spring is greater than that of the res outgoing 39, so that the rest position of the rod 21 and of the tube 35 is that shown in the drawing. Indeed, if the tube 35 was more than. left, the spring 40 would push it back to the right until the washer 41 abuts against the shoulder of the core 32.
If the tube 35 is further to the right than in its rest position, the spring 39 pushes it back to the left until the washer 41 abuts against the disc 28.
The distance separating the core 33 from the core 34 is determined by the position of the elongated holes 38 of the tube 35 and is equal to the distance separating two adjacent washers 9. The distance separating the core 32 from the disk 27, as well as that of the core 34 from the disk 31, is. twice as big.
This set of electromagnets allows. to place each needle 18 in front of any ron delle 9 of a group of six. Indeed, if the winding 22 is put under tension, the core 32 will stick against the say 27 and the needles 18 will move two washers to the left. If, in addition, the winding 23 is put under tension, the core 33 will come to stick against the core 34 and the needles 18 will move a washer to the right. They will therefore be in front of the ron delle located just to the left of the washer in front of which the needles are located when none of the windings 22, 23 and 24 is excited, and which will be called the rest washer.
When only the winding 23 is under tension, the tube 35 remains stationary and the core 33 comes to stick against the core 34, so that the needles 18 are placed opposite the washers located to the right of the rest washers. The energization of winding 24 alone causes the rightward displacement of the tube 35 and the needles move to the right of two washers relative to the rest washer. Finally, as can be seen, the simultaneous excitation of the windings 23 and 24 has the effect of moving the needles 18 of three ron delles to the right from their rest position.
For each of the six positions mentioned, each needle 18 is located opposite a part 42, carried by the end of a rod 43 sliding in a support 44, fixed to the uprights 1. This rod 43 is mechanically connected to the core of an electromagnet 45. On the other hand, the rod 43 cooperates with an elastic conductive blade 46 which, in the rest position shown in the drawing (FIG. 1), is in contact with a stud. 47 connected to the positive blade of a battery. When the electromagnet 45 is energized, and if the washer 9 is in the position shown in the drawing, the rod 43 cannot move because the needle 18 abuts against the washer.
On the other hand, if the notch 10 is in front of the needle 18, the rod 43 can move and brings the blade 46 into contact with the stud 48, which is connected to the negative pole of said battery.
Behind each blade 46 is placed a blade 49. All of the blades 49 have. tendency to come into contact with the end 50 of the blades 46, but are prevented from doing so by an insulating strip 51, which is fixed by each of its ends to the cores of two electromagnets 52, of which only one is visible in the drawing . A blade 53 is provided behind each blade 49 and tends to come to rest against the latter, but is prevented from doing so by a conductive strip 54 which retains all the blades 53. This strip 54 is fixed by its ends to the cores of two electromagnets 55.
The assembly shown in FIG. 2 further comprises two electromagnets 56 and 57, the cores of which are designated by 58 and 59. The displacement of these cores makes it possible to pivot, by means of levers 60 and 61, of the rods 62 and 63, vertical and of triangular section. These rods are supported on the rods 13 for locking the washers 9. By their rotation, they move the rods 13 away from these notches against the action of the springs 14, thus allowing the rotation of the washers 9, when the electro- magnets 56 and 57 are energized.
The electrical diagram of the appliance, shown in fig. 4, has been simplified and is valid for an organ with a single set, which constitutes the element whose position is controlled by the feeler organ constituted by the needle 18 shown in FIG. 3. It is understood that in reality each needle 18 of the apparatus is intended to control the position of an element, that is to say of a playing of the organ, so that the apparatus must include a needle 18 -and a group of six washers 9 for each playing of the organ. The control of this set is integral with an armature 64, capable of being attracted by two relays 65 and 66.
When the armature 64 is attracted by the relay 65, it comes into contact with one end of the winding of the relay 66, the other end of which is connected to the negative pole of the battery, which is connected to the pads 47 and 48. (fig. 1). When the armature 64 is attracted by the relay 66, it comes into contact with one end of the coil of the relay 65, the other end of which is connected to the positive pole of said battery.
It can be seen that by connecting the armature 64 to the positive pole, respectively negative, of the battery, through the intermediary of the blade 46, its attraction is caused by the relay 66, respectively 65, if it is not already present. in the desired position.
Frame 64 is. connected to the blade 49, which is controlled by the relay 52, called re lais call. When the latter is under tension, the blade 49 comes into contact with the blade 46. The relay 55 controls the blade 53 by means of the conductive strip 54. The blade 53 is connected to one end of the winding. relay 45, and when relay 55 is energized, it comes into contact with blade 49, the contact between strip 54 and blade 53 being interrupted. The strip 54 is connected via a resistor 67 to the negative pole of the battery. This resistor can be short-circuited by a contact operating with a cam 68. The latter is.
integral in rotation with a group of cams 69 to 73, which are driven by a motor 75, which controls the rotation of the endless screws 16. The transmission ratio is. such that these cams make one revolution while the toothed wheels 15, in engagement with the worm screws 16, make only a twelfth of a turn. A collector 74 is provided to rotate at the same angle as the toothed wheels 15. All of the cams 68 to 73 are connected to the negative pole of the relay supply battery.
Six contactors C1 to. C6, said to be combined, allow the needles 18 to be placed in front of any one of the six washers 9 of a group. In fact, these combination contactors make it possible to control the electromagnets 22, 23 and 24 through the intermediary of the relays 76, 77 and 78, one end of the windings of which is connected to the negative pole of said battery, the the other end of the winding of each of these relays is linked, via a reset contact controlled by a relay .1'l, called main tien, to certain pads of the contactors Ci to Cs, such as indicated in the drawing. A relay C, said.
combination, has two excitation windings and is actuated each time one of the combination contactors is pressed. This relay is at. delayed action and is provided with two contacts, one of which allows to connect, a positive of the battery, one end of the winding of the relays JI, 55, 45, 52, as well as the second winding of the relay C, of a relay E and a relay I. The other winding of relay E, known as the recording relay, is connected to a CE contactor or recording contactor.
Twelve so-called series contactors, of which only one, Si, is shown in the drawing, are provided to control at will the installation of each of the twelve rods 8, carrying the washers 9, opposite the needles 18 (fig. 1). .
These contactors make it possible to act, via relays 80, 81, - 82 and 83, on the motor 75, the excitation winding 84 of which is connected in series. Contactor 81 allows a positive voltage to be applied to. a ba lai 85 in contact with the collector 74. In the position indicated in the drawing, this brush 85 is located in front of an insulating blade 86 of the switch. The latter also comprises two conductive blades 87 and 88, isolated from one another and in contact with wipers 89 and 90. The eleven other series contactors, not shown, are each connected to a wiper similar to the wiper 85, all these rubbers being distributed regularly around the collector 74.
The position of the collector indicated in sin corresponds to the one it should have when the series controlled by the SI contactor is in place.
To illustrate the control of motor 75, assume that the manifold is not in the position shown in the drawing, but that the blade 86 is down. When the SI contactor is pressed, relay 80 is energized, its circuit closing by the internal contact of relay I, the external contact of relay E, the wiper 89, the blade 87 and the slider 85.
By internal contact of a relay, one tightens the contact which is the folds close to the rolling of the relay in the graphic representation of fig. 4, and by external contact, the one which is furthest from it.
When closing, relay 80 engages relay 82, which connects one end of winding 84 to the negative of a voltage source, the other end of this rolling end being connected to a motor brush. 75, the other brush of which is connected to the positive of said voltage source. The motor 75 starts to turn,. By turning the cams 68 to 73, as well as the manifold, in a clockwise direction, until the blade 86 is opposite the wiper 85, thus cutting the power supply to relay 80 and, consequently, to relay 82.
If, on the contrary, the collector had been placed at the start, from the lagoon that the blade 86 is at the top, it is the relay 81 which would have been energized, its circuit being this time closed by the wiper 85, the blade 88 and the trotter 90, on the one hand, and by the internal contact of the relay E, on the other hand. Closing relay 81 would have had the effect of engaging relay 83, so that this time the other end of winding 84 attracted was connected to the negative of said voltage source, causing the motor to rotate. 75 in the opposite direction.
If, when stopping the engine, the series of washers is not strictly in place, the cams 68 to 73 are in positions different from those shown in the drawing. One of the cams 71 or 72 will therefore be in contact with its corresponding wiper. If the cam 72 is in contact with its slider, the winding of the relay 83 will be energized, because it will be connected to the negative by the internal contact of the relay 80 and the cam 72, so that the motor will turn counterclockwise. 'watch until the cams are in the positions shown in the drawing. If it is the cam 71 which is in contact with its slider,
its negative potential will be applied to relay 82 by the internal contact of relay 81, and the motor will turn clockwise.
When one of the combination contactors Ci to Cs is pressed, the excitation winding of those of the relays 76, 77, 78, selected by this combination, is connected to the positive pole of the battery via the internal contacts of the holding relay M is switched off, and at the same time the closing of the combination relay C, with delayed action. Closing this relay C energizes relays 11'1, 45 and 52.
The holding relay Dl, when closing, interrupts the connection of the windings of relays 76, 77 and 78 with the combination contactors C1 to Cs and connects the winding of these relays with their own contact interior, so that the relays that have been energized are kept in the active position. The needles 18 are therefore vented opposite the washers 9 corresponding to the chosen combination.
On the other hand, the relay 45 is also energized, so that the needles 18 are pressed against said washers 9. When the washer placed in front of a needle is in a position allowing the needle to enter its notch. 10, the corresponding blade 46 comes into contact with the pad 48, which is connected to the negative of the battery, so that a negative voltage is applied to the armature 64 of the corresponding set. If, on the contrary,
the washer is turned so that the needle 18 cannot enter its notch, the blade 46 and therefore the armature 64 are connected to the positive pole of the battery.
Thus, depending on the position of the washers with which the needles 18 cooperate, the corresponding games controlled by the armatures 64 are or are not engaged.
The operating time of these relays is short, so that the organist has the possibility of selecting his combination of stops in a very short time, of the order of a tenth of a second, by pressing one of the combination switches.
For each piece he wishes to play, the organist has the possibility of choosing in advance the combinations of plays he intends to use. To do this, he manually actuates the buttons of each set, which he needs to obtain the desired combination, so that all the frames 64 of the selected sets are moved in the same direction. To fix the ideas, it will be admitted in what follows. that the position of the armature 64 shown in the sines corresponds to the use of the clearance it controls.
After having operated the game buttons to obtain the desired combination, the organist presses the recording CE contactor, which causes the recording relay E to close, and while keeping the CE contactor closed, he press one of the. combination contactors, which also causes the closing of the relay C. The relays 45 of each needle 18 are therefore energized, but, following the operation of the relay E, the relay 52 is not energized.
In addition, relay 80 is. also excited, which starts motor 75, rotating, clockwise, cams 68 to 73 and rods 5 (fig. 1 ) with discs 6 that they wear. The rotation of the cam 68 has the effect of -connecting the resistor 67 in series with the relays 45, the excitation current of which is then reduced in a pro portion such as those which were able to function completely, because notch 10 was opposite their needle 18, remain.
attracted, while the others release, the reduced excitation current not sufficient to keep them in active position because of the air gap that is. larger for these latter relays.
The rotation of cam 7? has the effect of closing the circuit of the second energizing winding of relay E, so that the CE and combination contactors can be released without causing the release of relays C and E. The rotation of the cam 69 causes the excitation of the relay F which controls the electromagnets 56 and 57, so that the rod 13 is away from the washers, allowing. thus the free rotation of the latter. The washers 9, the notch of which is engaged with a needle 18, are therefore returned to the respective position of the washer 9, with respect to the disc 6, which is shown in FIG. 1.
At this point, the cams 68-73 have turned about a quarter of a turn clockwise, and the cam 68 is shorting 1a again. resistance 67, so that all the needles 18 engage in the notches 10 of the washers 9. The cam 70 supplies power to the reversing relay I and to the relay 55. The external contact of the relay I ensures the maintenance of the latter, tan say that its internal contact cuts power to relay 80, which has the effect of energizing relay 83 and turning motor 75, and therefore cams 68 to 73, in the opposite direction .
The excitation of the relays 55 causes the blades 53 to come into contact with the blades 49, while interrupting the connection between these blades 53 and the strip 54. One end of the winding of each relay 45 is therefore at the positive of the battery, while the other end is now connected to the corresponding armature 64.
When the latter is in the position shown in FIG. 4, relays 45 and 66 are connected in series to the battery, and the reduced current flowing through them is sufficient to maintain relay 45 in the active position in which it is already located, but is insufficient to cause operation of relay 66 .
If the armature 64 is in the other position, the corresponding relay 45 releases, the two ends of its winding being connected to the positive pole of the battery. Thus, for each set engaged, the corresponding needle 18 remains in the notch 10 during the return back of the rods 5 and of the assembly which they support, which causes the rotation of the corresponding washers.
When the discs 6 are in the position they occupy in FIG. 1, the cam 72 controls the release of the relays 83, thus cutting the power supply to the motor 75, and (the relay E, the release of which in turn causes that of the relay C, thus cutting off the supply to the relays I, 55, 45 and M. The return to the inactive position of relay 31 causes the release of those of relays 76, 77, 78, which were active and which controlled the electromagnets 22, 23 or 24.
The organist can thus register in advance six combinations of sets for a determined position of the rods 5 and of the assemblies which they support. These six combinations are sufficient for most of the pieces to be played, but it is understood that one could provide a device which allows more than six combinations of games to be recorded. As it is possible to make the needles 18 cooperate with twelve series of washers 9, the organist has the possibility of recording six combinations of sets for each of twelve consecutive pieces.
It is understood that many modifications could be made to the apparatus described above. One could in particular provide a contactor making it possible to link all the armatures 64 to the positive pole of the battery, to make it possible to place all the games together in their inactive position. The relays 76, 77 and 78 could also be omitted by directly connecting the combination contactors Ci to Cs to the electromagnets 22, 23 and 24 and by providing a holding contact on them.
It goes without saying that the washers 9 could be replaced by other moving parts and that the control of the motor 75 could be advantageously combined with an automatic brake blocking the motor as soon as the latter is no longer powered.
The apparatus described above was intended especially for controlling the sets of an organ, but it is understood that such apparatus can be provided for controlling other elements, for example to make different combinations at will. lighting, especially in theaters, or for illuminated advertising.
